12:10 AM
Luckily I did not eat a horse just now.

@RegDwigнt Disgusting.
Why not eat poop?
@terdon I happen to be listening to Kεμάλ by Αλκίνοος Ιωαννίδης now.
And Βοσπορος.
I can even understand half of the lyrics of Βοσπορος in the (Greek) subtitles!

@Cerberus No talking about poop in this chat!

Tell that to Reg.

12:27 AM
Tsk.

Someone told me my colour is maroon.
But when I used GIMP to create it, it said 'brown'.

It kind of is.
Or just "red".
Haha.

Well, I guess colours are not well defined.
@Cerberus How are you and Mario?

Good.
I am talking to him as we speak.

I wonder where my Maria is now. Who would she be?

12:36 AM
On Tinder.

@JasperLoy That's the best ever!
@JasperLoy Maroon is good. Brings out the color in the hat.

I didn't know smokers were exposed to that much radioactivity.

@Cerberus yeah, that needs justification. is that from the xkcd chart originally?

2:03 AM
@Mitch Probably not; it is from a documentary.
The polonium and the lead in tobacco smoke are apparently quite radio-active.
Even so, it is quite likely that the other harmful effects of smoking are far greater...
It is in English.

I'm trying being invisible.
Except the waffles

I'm trying being a horse
except I'm a hippo
with a big patriotic hat
close though, I suppose hippos are the river horses.

A hippo is a horse
Oh yes, so you say

Flußpferde

Hippopotamuses are river horses - hippos are just plain old horses.
To the pedant, anyway.
Yours is a hippie hippo

I am not an appreciator of Greek, but it works in German well.
I am just a hippo. no potatoes or anything else.

3:57 AM
I don't really know anything but English

best get working on your Korean.

I know smatterings of Greek and Latin.

ah, yes, the left behind building materials of western language.

Hey that's really cool.

I need to get rest before my 10 hour drive, but I cannot
fall asleep
and if I leave late, I will not make it to Chicago in time for dinner at Graham Elliott Bistro.
which is a thing I really want.
and if that happens, I will have no other choice but to murder everyone around me and then burn everything to the ground.
and then start a genocide.
Welcome to Pedant Club
actually, the sign outside said The Pedant Club

I am sorry for you.
The Pedant Club?

"phooey"

Sometimes I am a pedant. Sometimes I am not.

I am a mean, snarky, pedantic hippo

4:11 AM
I used to be more of one. But ELU discourages conventional pedanticness. Now I am smugly an over-pedant.

when I yawn, all of the small fauna runs or flies away.
because they think that I am going to eat them.
alas, I cannot make friends with birds.

You yawn a lot.
Oh yes, you are tired. That's right...
It's weird, you're in the middle of a yawn every time I glance over
I think the medium-size fauna should be the scaredest.
The large fauna would stand strong, while the minute fauna would readily evade your lumbering orifice.
Go to sleep. I will now do two things.
Firstly.
OK, it's 10.21 pm where you are.
Not bad.

11:21
I am in eastern time traveling to central time.

Or else you are not there. Oh yes, my dear watson, you are 10 hours away
That would explain the time disparity. Still not bad
I am at 11:21
How do you pronounce your last name?

Georges Jean Raymond Pompidou (French: [ʒɔʁʒ pɔ̃pidu]; 5 July 1911 – 2 April 1974) was Prime Minister of France from 1962 to 1968, holding the longest tenure in this position, and later President of the French Republic from 1969 until his death. == Biography == He was born in the commune of Montboudif, in the department of Cantal in central France. After his khâgne at Lycée Louis-le-Grand, where he befriended Senegalese future poet and statesman Léopold Sédar Senghor, he graduated from the École Normale Supérieure with a degree of Agrégation in literature. I wish I knew French, but not enough to actually stop doing the things I am doing, and learn it...
I've just put the cap on the first hat-getting spree of the season, which is why I'm up.
I will play a few bullet games on chess.com and go to bed.

Very informative.

I am a cornish hen.

@skullpatrol - CUTE avatar! Very Christmasy!

Thanks pal @medica :D
@medica how are you?
Now that^^ video is justification clearly against smoking @Mitch

8:28 AM
there's no possible valid argument against smoking because plenty of people do it all the time and it's clearly not such a big deal.

Jez
9:11 AM
@medica signed up for Health yet?

1 hour later…
10:18 AM
Suddenly feels very cold here.

We have had enough heat in here
@JasperLoy did I enlighten you at all with all of my heated arguments yesterday?
Honestly of course.

@skullpatrol Not really, but thanks.

What did you not find convincing @JasperLoy?

10:34 AM
@skullpatrol Well, there was nothing special about it to enlighten me, that's all.

What @JasperLoy do you mean by "special"?

@skullpatrol Powerful? Maybe. Anyway, never mind, I think you are overthinking it.

What I went through, and am still going through, is the most powerful life changing experience I can possibly imagine. I'm sorry I can't share the details of it on the internet.

@skullpatrol I see. OK.

10:56 AM
The most powerful thing that can happen to you @JasperLoy comes from inside of you.
A powerful belief in yourself is what I'm talking about my friend.
Nobody can make you believe in yourself but you.

2 hours later…
1:18 PM
@skullpatrol well, it just gave the punch line (smoking is way worse than all those others) with a couple more details. Basically it says that radioactive polonium and lead are the suppliers. But that doesn't explain. Is that in a single cigarette? is that in released in the smoke or do you get it by just being near a pack a of cigarettes, or do you get it from the same amount of chewing tobacco?
Also, radioactive 'lead'? Looking things up (on-line, questionable I know), I have been educated! Normally (as was my expectation) lead is usually considered the most non-radioactive element in that it is the best shielding and is also considered the stopping point of many radioactive decay chains. So 'radioactive lead' was a shocker. But...
...looking things up, there are in fact naturally occurring isotopes of lead (not in the usual uranium decay chain) which are in fact radioactive. Except those isotopes are pretty rare.
So a one sentence 'cigarette smoke gives you way more radioactivity than an astronaut gets being in space' is underdetermined. It's not convincing at all. (cigarette smoke, as @Cerberus mentioned will kill you for many other reasons first).
Are campfires also radioactive (or better worded, does the smoke particles transmit radioactivity more efficiently than unburned word)? Is it tobacco that is bad or is any plant material bad? what about cotton dust or coal dust?
rant over. So, anybody up for some tennis?

1:41 PM
It also got me interested enough to go and browse the very detailed Wikipedia article as suggested in the comments below the video @Mitch
"The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video"
The health effects of smoking are the circumstances, mechanisms, and factors of tobacco consumption on human health. Epidemiological research has been focused primarily on cigarette tobacco smoking, which has been studied more extensively than any other form of consumption. Tobacco is the single greatest cause of preventable death globally. Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart, liver and lungs, with smoking being a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (including emphysema and chronic bronchitis), and cancer (particularly...
also this reference was informative

@skullpatrol just like a CT to the head is not full body

Indeed

and dust is a super great (or efficient) way of transferring 'stuff' to the bloodstream.

or the dental xray they showed

dental xrays are -very- low dosage. not a concern. only a few 'bananas' worth

1:53 PM
yep
"In a person smoking 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes per day, the radiation dose to the bronchial epithelium in areas of bifurcation is 8000 mrem per year -- the equivalent of the dose to the skin from 300 x-ray films of the chest per year. This figure is comparable to total-body exposure to natural background radiation containing 80 mrem per year in someone living in the Boston area."
from the reference above^^^

2:34 PM
So now the question is...(without checking the reference!) is the propensity for lung cancer primarily due to the efficiency of delivering ionizing radioactive particles to the lungs and resulting in cancer causing DNA mutations, or is it the chemical substances in the smoke that disrupt DNA fixing of naturally occurring mutations thus promoting cancer. (or both).
That is, is it the radioactivity or is it the tobacco substances themselves?

@simchona Hi.
I’m thinking that the folks who thought ELL should have been called "English Overflow" were miscalling it. "English Underflow" would seem more apropos, although "English Backwash" has something to be said for it. :)

@tchrist Did someone seriously suggest that?

@MattЭллен Is there anything else you want to tell me other than not talk about poop? Just wondering.

@JasperLoy hi! no. How's it going?

@MattЭллен I'm just feeling a little down and confused and indecisive these few days. In any case, I hope to be able to start the new year successfully by studying math.

Anonymous
@JasperLoy How is your language self-study going?

@snailboat Haha, it is not going on at all. I have not even bought the books yet, lol. Maybe after I finish studying the math next year.

5:37 PM
@JasperLoy Ooh, I misremembered! I thought you ordered that Assimil program or some such.

@snailboat I plan to order it, but the plan has not been carried out, so you are right.

@JasperLoy So long as you take small steps, you'll be able to succeed

You see, I have made many plans and declared them in this chat, but their execution is another matter, which depends on several factors mostly related to my mental condition.
Many people tell me the colour is maroon, but it says brown in GIMP.
I can understand why they say so, because it doesn't look like brown to me either.

user116848
@JasperLoy Hi

user116848
@MattЭллен Hi Matt

5:43 PM
@Farooq Hello! Do you celebrate Christmas there?

@Farooq hi

@JasperLoy Maybe GIMP doesn't know about 'maroon' and calls it what it thinks is the nearest.

user116848
@JasperLoy No, we don't. But still it is a public holiday here. Do you?

I typed brown in GIMP and got this colour. The same happens when I try to set the colour of my desktop in Linux.
@Farooq It is a holiday here too. I just like the atmosphere but I don't really celebrate it.

user116848
I see. Here we celebrate Eid. (A Muslim festival).

5:45 PM
@Farooq so if it is a public holiday, but you don't celebrate, is it a day off from work or school?

user116848
@Mitch Yeah, it is a holiday. No work :-)

Nice! is there -any- thing associated with that day at all other than 'woohoo. extra day off!'?

user116848
@Mitch Yes, the birth of Quaid-e-Azam (a past leader).

That's something. But I'm guessing most people don't really know about that or do anything special about that.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah ( Audio , born Mahomedali Jinnahbhai; 25 December 1876 – 11 September 1948) was a lawyer, politician, and the founder of Pakistan. Jinnah served as leader of the All-India Muslim League from 1913 until Pakistan's independence on 14 August 1947, and as Pakistan's first Governor-General from independence until his death. He is revered in Pakistan as Quaid-i-Azam (Great Leader) and Baba-i-Qaum (Father of the Nation). His birthday is observed as a national holiday. Born in Karachi and trained as a barrister at Lincoln's Inn in London, Jinnah rose to prominence in the Indian National...
I guess it makes as much sense to give that guy's birthday as a holiday as it does to give Queen Victoria's birthday or one of the US Presidents' birthdays

5:50 PM
SE should make my birthday deletion account day, lol.

user116848
@Mitch You are right. We just get a day off. Nothing special.

user116848
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 True

Wow, 6 people withdrew from the math elections.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Well, if you're Pakistani, it's probably more meaningful.
@JasperLoy checks out math elections

@Mitch Voting begins in 2 hours, remember to vote.

5:54 PM
@Mitch yeah, well, they're all roughly equivalently meaningful in their locales.

So The Hobbit 3 has just come out in cinemas here.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 we don't get any previous monarch's birthday as a holiday! your damned Canadian privileges!

@JasperLoy just checked them
It's pretty obvious to me that the best way to vote is quantitatively. Those who have the most activity on meta and have the most accepted flags should win, no matter how much you like their face or spelling of their name.
@JasperLoy wha? Already? Oh... maybe here too (12 hrs away).
@MattЭллен Don't you get a live one at least? thinking about yet another gift to plan for
Maybe she'd like a dog collar?

@MattЭллен That's the only one we get.

For her dogs of course.

5:58 PM
@Mitch nope.

Whew. cancels plan for possibly misunderstood dog collar gift

we have had a couple of royal holidays recently for the silver jubilee and the Royal Wedding

Maybe next year we'll change it to Elizabeth II's birthday, if she outlasts Victoria

but those are not annual

@MattЭллен yeah we didn't get those

6:00 PM
@MattЭллен They're annular.
Like 'nucular'

lol
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 it was a good long weekend.

'anular' is a lot like your aunt
I mean that in the best possible way.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Wait... you get Queen Victoria's day off?

@Mitch yes
specifically, the last monday in May that occurs before the 25th
Officially, it's "Victoria Day" because she was a queen and it's her birthday

10 mins ago, by Matt Эллен
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 we don't get any previous monarch's birthday as a holiday! your damned Canadian privileges!

unofficially it's "May two four", which refers to a two-four, or 24-size case of beer
It's the first weekend of summer
in a way

6:05 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Like Himmelsfahrt/Father's day in Germany.
ather's day because the father's all decide to go away from their families and drink all day... and it's socially acceptable
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That kind of recognition could give someone a big head.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 apropos of nothing other than you are Canadian, have you read Robertson Davies?

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 nope

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 ok, thanks.
I started the k'nex ferris wheel last night.
My tub of them has two different sizes, and this wheel uses the tiny ones.
I saw a very large ferris wheel running in a toy store window years ago, and I've wanted to play with k'nex since then. I'm going to try motorizing my wheel, even though it didn't come with a motor.

Post a pic when you're done. I would never have put those together, kleenex and ferris wheel

I would rather live in a country with first world software and third world hardware.

You sure about that?
What about the firmware?

LOL. You know, Jez did not know what firmware is until I mentioned it a few years ago in this chat.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Who will you be spending Christmas with?

learning new things is usually fun. Learning how to fill in tax returns is an exception

@MattЭллен I have not been working for 7 years, so I have no need to fill in any tax forms.

6:51 PM
That is something I have never had to do. And I've been working for nearly thirty years.

yeah, I didn't have to learn until a year after I stopped being self employed, because I didn't want to pay an accountant £300 to fill in a form declaring I hadn't earned any untaxed money

It is very interesting that I just drank a cup of water, a cup of coffee and a cup of soya milk.

the online form is surprisingly easy if you haven't earned any money

Put zero in the first box, and presto, it fills it in?

The government usually gives me a few hundred dollars each year as benefits to the underprivileged. But I am not on any social welfare.

6:54 PM
Not quite that easy, sadly, but basically. I can't remember the details, but there wasn't a lot

When I turn hats off, I also don't see others' hats, wow! I just made an important discovery!

@JasperLoy the usual suspects. Grandma, Grandpa, Mom, brother, sis-in-law, Tim.
What about you?

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Just me and my mum. We will probably buy fast food, which is still open on Christmas, unlike in America.

@JasperLoy that sounds rather nice.

Christmas is always a good time to rewatch my favourite animation. The Polar Express.

7:00 PM
Have you ever seen Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas?

Nope, I have not heard of it.

Ha! I managed to create a stack overflow in my JavaScript code. I actually ran out of stack space. Damn, I feel kinda proud.

It's interesting.

@JasperLoy You don't have to file anyway? Here, you do.

7:01 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That's one good thing about my country, lol.

@JasperLoy So if nobody files, it means nobody's made any money?

That's the first time ever. And it was because I was trying to be very careful. Isn't it always the way?

Btw this answer is close to a gold badge and rare hat (not my answer)

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Hmm, I am not too sure who has to do the filing. All I know is I don't have to file.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Closer still.

7:02 PM
@JasperLoy Maybe you DO have to file, and THAT'S why the government is after you!
PS I'm only joking. They're not after you.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 LOL. The caps add to the effect.
I think I should turn hats back on.

Q: Can 'artificial' be used alone?

But since any manufactured substance can only be created from something that has natural origins, can anything simply be described as artificial? Are ...

@MattЭллен Ah... I let me think then.

8:45 PM
@KitFox I've deleted mine clearing out my cookies n stuff

Aww.
sad panda

@MattЭллен Can you explain what a clicky universe is?

@MattЭллен I've been largely unimpressed with the questions on this site in general.

8:48 PM
@Robusto yeah. I've heard that a bit

@Mitch You are absolutely right to be critical.

@KitFox Well, often I think our world needs to be rebuilt and under one ruler, but I am not sure when that will happen, maybe another 100,000 years.

@Mitch I assumed it was the radioactivity a smoker is exposed to per year, but it doesn't say so explicitly (anything else would be misleading...).
All burned matter is at least very unhealthy.

@Robusto I just hope that there are more questions to give me easy points, even though I may delete my accounts.

@Mitch I read this paper saying that wood smoke is 30 times as carcinogenic as tobacco smoke. But it didn't say how they were compared exactly... at any rate, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that wood smoke also contains various radioactive metals.
"All burned matter is at least very unhealthy" — by this I meant, exposing your membranes to any kind of burned matter.

8:52 PM
@Cerberus People don't smoke two packs of wood chips per day, generally.

Indeed not.
So the question is, what kind of smoke did they compare to what kind?

@MattЭллен Any system tends to normalize the more mature it gets. So one would not be surprised if most of the great questions on ELU have already been asked.

I would not.

I am surprised so many people, seemingly native speakers, write an user instead of a user.

Now we get the "which sentance is grammatic" questions.

8:57 PM
I wish John Lawler would write his lengthy comments as answers. It appears that these comments are often answers to the question.
