@medica That’s very hard. In Spanish, of course it would have to be "I would do whatever were needed", and that’s how they used to speak in English, too — back when English writers used fancier sorts of moods. Today, I quite doubt you could find any monoglot who were willing to use such a construction naturally. All the English examples of that sort of thing are older than either of us, and possibly than both of us combine.
If you pored through Visser, you could find examples.

Hi all

I never see this few users here usually.

user116848
7 in total. Including me.

user116848
I'll be gone too once I have shut down my computer.

12:59 AM
@medica Oh, now I understand your question. I think I’ve given you the wrong answer. Or rather, a right answer to a different question than you were asking.

@tchrist I think I understand that, as is often the case, I need to let go of the idea that there's a right answer for this problem. I tend to want 'rules' when I don't understand something, and the subjunctive is something I'm shaky on in its finer aspects. So your answer was actually very helpful. Thank you!

1:27 AM
Hello.
@medica The thing is, this is a rule, but I'm not sure why we have it.
The rule is that you use a simple past form in a clause that is subordinate to an hypothetical if clause, and you also use the simple past in other clauses that are subordinate to the hypothetical main clause that comes with an hypothetical if clause.
The "reason" behind it is that such subordinate clauses are still referring to the hypothetical, counter-factual situation of the "if I were rich, I would do this" sentence, so they need to be removed from the present, which is reserved for facts.
However, I would expect us to use a past subjunctive there, just as in the if clause: why we use a simple past instead, I do not know. It is I would be too scared to talk to a man who was following me in the dark near the park, not were.

1:44 AM
Hi, I did not sleep for 20 hours yesterday, then I slept for 4 hours.

2:03 AM
@Cerberus Hmm, that is a good explanation. Thanks! This is really helpful to me.

@medica Good!
@JasperLoy My sleep cycle is equally fucked up.

@Cerberus I was comparing the pre-university and university math syllabuses of the UK and my place. It is pathetic how things are so much dumbed down here. Sigh, the more I know about this place, the more I think it sucks.

Hello.

@JasperLoy Where in the UK are you comparing with?

@Mitch I was just talking to a bright UK kid taking the A Level Exams in Math (pre-university). They study about twice as much math as someone taking the dumbed down A Level Math here.

2:18 AM
extra subjects or same subjects just further?

@Mitch Both. A level can mean so many different things. It is a very generic term. And for the universities, we don't even need to compare, lol. Those here suck even more. You may think otherwise, but that's because you've been hearing all the nonsense in the news etc.

Don't compare with the US. It varies widely from high school to highschool... oh, you could compare the AP tests I guess.
@JasperLoy Which nonsense? THere's a lot of it!!

@Mitch How kids here are good at math, how we have a world class education system, how the universities here are world class, etc. Makes my toes laugh.

@JasperLoy Not to be nosy, where do you live?

@JersonZuleta I am sorry, but I would like to keep that a secret for various reasons.

2:21 AM
Oh. Yeah. There's the myth in the west that Asia kids are all good at math/science.

@JasperLoy But I thought Singapore had good education?

@JasperLoy It's alright. It's just something I'd say as well about where I live.

By SIngapore, Cerb means some other place in Asia.

Third-world country, y'know.

@Mitch Yes, very other, otherest.

2:22 AM
It's not your fault where you parents were born.

@JersonZuleta I am sorry to hear that. I live in a first world country though.
Tmr is 1 Nov. I shall start running then, as promised.

@JasperLoy But yeah, it all depends on who you are comparing yourself with. Or what university you're comparing. I've had the opportunity to compare myself with some people from different highschools and whilst in some I'm ahead, with others I'm way far behind.

@JersonZuleta Yes, life is indeed very different in different countries, or even different parts of the same country, in all aspects.

@JasperLoy Start slow! Build up slowly.

@JasperLoy Specially how the whole educational system works, though. Whilst they take Geometry, Algebra, and so on separately. We take it all at once—— I mean, it's still math so....

2:27 AM
@Mitch Do you mind sharing your email with me?

I suppose. But how do you do that? (concerns about indexing by google and spam)

@Mitch OK, next question. Will you tell me your real first name and last name in email if we share email, or is that too much?

user116848
@JasperLoy But you are way better off than in countries like Pakistan.

user116848
But I never complain :-)

@Arrowfar Is Pakistan a Muslim country?

user116848
2:33 AM
Yes, it is.

@Arrowfar Better off than a woman in countries like Pakistan, I'd say.

user116848
@JersonZuleta Yeah

@JasperLoy How about just my first name?

user116848
@JersonZuleta I am from Pakistan though

@Arrowfar It must have some good things, though. Not everything can be /that/ bad.

2:35 AM
@Mitch Hmm, then never mind. It's because of my OCD. I want all my email addresses to be complete with first and last names. But if you change your mind one day, you can email me at jasperloy at outlook dot com. I currently have the emails of about 25 SE folks.

user116848
@JersonZuleta Yep. Not all bad.

@Mitch Let me guess. Apfelstrudel!

@JasperLoy You would appreciate Knuth then. He was meticulous about references and insisted on having the correct middle initial even though many people don't give them on their papers.
@Cerberus ha ha. close. well, not really. considers changing name to that just to make that work
reconsiders

@Arrowfar Are you happy living in your country?

user116848
@JasperLoy Um...I am okay with it. But I don't go outside home much. It is not considered very safe.

user116848
2:47 AM
Safe in the sense that a person can get mugged very easily here.

user116848
Like in other third world countries.

@Arrowfar But there must be safe places. I mean, where I live is considered unsafe to go around alone after 10 pm or so. Other than that, it's okay.

Where I live, it is very safe. A girl can go out alone at 2 am and not get raped.

user116848
@JersonZuleta Yeah, definitely. Where I live is generally considered very safe but we never know.

user116848
I mean I have been mugged twice or thrice

user116848
2:51 AM
Good thing I didn't have nothing much with me.

@Arrowfar That's true. Two years ago I was almost robbed in front of my residential compound. My fight or flight response helped a lot and I got away safely.

user116848
Yeah, exactly.

user116848
My only response is 'flight'

I surprised myself back then. I didn't know why I fought specially since I'm sort of a scrawny boy.

user116848
Although I am a guy I never think about the other option.

2:54 AM
I don't think in those situations, I simply act, I guess.

user116848
Yeah, in 'act' sense. Exactly!

@Mitch I love it when people make reality fit lies.
They always tell people here to give their money to the robber instead of fighting.

My parents say the same. And it's probably for the best.

user116848
Same here.

If you lose an eye, or your life, that cannot be repaired. If you lose the contents of your wallet, or your phone, that can easily be repaired. If you are exceedingly poor, it may take several months. If it should take longer than that, then perhaps you shouldn't bring such expensive objects with you!

2:58 AM
@jerson Where are you from, if not secret?

Then again, look at what happened to Mr. & Ms. Wayne.

Who?

@Cerberus It is hard to regain your mind after you have lost it.

Nevermind. It was a reference.

By the way, a trick that helps:

2:59 AM
@JasperLoy Colombia, South America.

Carry an extra wallet and an extra phone with you.
Take some old wallet, put some useless cards in it and €10 in cash, and a few coins.

@JersonZuleta Aha! I might prefer living there instead of my place, hehe.

user116848
@Cerberus I have heard of that too :-) Is that effective?

Buy an old phone off Ebay for €20.

I always get a bit of PTSD after I get robbed, though.

3:00 AM
@Arrowfar I have never been robbed, but people say it can be effective.
@JersonZuleta Understandably!

user116848
@JersonZuleta Yeah, I have been traumatised too several times.

I was told to carry a cup of Starbucks (not transparent though) & put your stuff in there, so when you get robbed, you can just tell them you didn't bring anything with you.

@JersonZuleta How often have you been robbed?

@JasperLoy I don't really think so. Trust me, not just the place, the people too...
Like thrice.
Not technically since one I got away with my phone safely.
I managed to outsmart the thief.

user116848
Yeah, it is sad stuff.

user116848
3:03 AM
I never talk about it though.

user116848
But today we happened to here.

It can be very traumatising. I prefer when you get robbed without realising. Like in public transport.

user116848
It feels very peaceful sitting at home and chatting though :D

At least when you do realise, you're safe and all you can do is just be mad that something was stolen from you.

user116848
yeah

3:08 AM
@JersonZuleta Sure.
But I have never been pickpocketed!
Even though there are many pickpockets here, and I often take the tram or the underground.

Maybe my wallet isn't big enough, lol.

My bike has been stolen countless times, though.
Haha.

They stole the tires of my bike...
It was sad.

user116848
You mean only tires?

3:11 AM
Huh.
They steal your front wheel sometimes here, but never your tires!

user116848
I see. It sounds funny though :-)

user116848
Sorry.

I don't know why would they do that but whatever...

user116848
@Cerberus I didn't know there were any pickpockets in Netherlands.

user116848
I thought it was all goody goody

3:13 AM
Not at all!

user116848
I see

Only in crowded places, though, like city centres.
And I think more bikes are stolen here than anywhere else in the world!
Have you had your bike stolen in P.?

user116848
Me? No

user116848
I used to have it as a kid.

3:55 AM
I've had bike wheels stolen, that just bites. Never forget to lock.

I've had a tire stolen off my car!

That sucks!
@prosodycontext I always lock my bike. Often with more than one lock...
It isn't enough.

4:11 AM
you need a bike alarm

Haha. :P Expert bike thefts.

And have the alarm stolen? No thanks!
You have no idea what Amsterdam is like...

Now that's hilarious.
To have your alarm stolen.
It's like when a cop is robbed.

I have seen some people lock-up the frame of the bike and remove the front tire and carry it with them.

4:14 AM
@IceBoy Haha, that may help...

Sounds too much of a work when you're late.

Exactly.

Professional thefts?

better than no bike

@IceBoy But maybe not better than the risk of no bike.

4:15 AM
Or the risk of getting fired because you're always late.

:O
doesn't anybody walk?
where is that?

I like that picture.
If we replaced all those people for cars, we wouldn't even have a fourth in the same picture.

@IceBoy Some random place in the city. It is like that in many places.
@JersonZuleta Far fewer! A car takes up as much space as...10 parked bikes?

Wow! you are right,
12 mins ago, by Cerberus
You have no idea what Amsterdam is like...
I need to check it out one day...

4:25 AM
@Cerberus There was a campaign in my city the other day in which a few bikes built the outline of a normal car and put it around their bikes so they'd take up the same space as a real car. It was funny to see all those drivers mad at them.

@IceBoy Yay!
@JersonZuleta Haha, very nice! Picture?
A bicycle parking lot near the central station.
The back side of that same parking lot.

It was something like that. We're not the first city to do so, though.

Haha, that is cool!
Must be difficult to manage, though.

It's worth it. Too many traffic jams due to the excessive amount of cars nowadays.
And not too many people use bicycles.

Right, they should legislate against that...
Promote biking and improve public transportation.

That never happens at Two-Mile High Stadium in South Park. I wonder why?

Because every robber is exhausted after having to climb two miles high.

@terdon You keep switching your IPA. Perhaps you need something stouter.
But 2 is such a small number!

@tchrist Am I using it wrong? In which example?

But the master robber is smaller still. Only his feet are big.

You haven’t seen the yard at South Park.

1:37 PM
@tchrist I am grief-stricken.

@tchrist Well, I was under the impression that I was.

@Cerberus So far Ara has demonstrated that the easiest part of the problem is solved. yay! Now for the hard part.

Thanks @tchrist, I think I corrected them.

@tchrist Women don't wear jewelry?
No, no, I got it. That's a trick question. There is no Two Mile High stadium, therefore there are no such incidents!
@Arrowfar That's tough. Street lights hep alleviate that some. or actually I don't know that, but I do know that in Europe/NA, when the street lights go out, there is more crime. But not in the rural areas. It's complex.

@Arrowfar hey cool, robbers with working hours. Do they also have a union and go on strike?

3:28 PM
There is an amazon.com and an amazon.co.uk — are there other sites? I need to get their UI showing me stuff in Spanish, French, or Portuguese.

user116848
@RegDwigнt Maybe it is because they can rob the people easily, going to or coming out of their work. I mean I have been mugged going to and coming out of my educational institute.

Switching browser languages didn’t help.
And there is no www.amazon.co.{es,fr}

what is the regex for must contain one of a and one of b but order is not important?

Which I don’t understand.

@tchrist Yes, India, Germany, France, China, Japan, etc.

3:29 PM
What is site of France?

amazon.fr I think, you can get the list somewhere.

Johan that is challenging.

Go to one of the amazons and scroll to the bottom I think.

I can show you though.
It is easiest to just write /a/ and /b/.
Doing it in one regex is possible but ugly.
And it will not leave your pointer where you may want it.
(?xs: (?= .* a) (?= .* b) )
See why I said to use /a/ && /b/ instead? :)
Why does UKamazon have an extra .co. DNS element?
That's why I couldn't find the other countries.
I assumed they worked like www.amazon.CO.uk
@Johan See above. My linker is ybr0kt.

@tchrist nice ty sir

@tchrist I think amazon, and most providers who do this, try to get domainname.com, domainname.ca, domainname.fr, etc, but in some ccTLDs you can't get a domain right in the tld, so you have to use whatever convention that country has decided on.
in australia it used to be .com.au, etc.
in the UK and others it was .co.uk

Seriously?

A: Is "evidence" countable?

KrisThe Q. is based on a misconception. Google for any "mass" noun in the plural form. Don't presume they all incorrect. They are grammatical in the semantic context when used correctly. Not every such noun has use for its plural, but that's another matter. (meta: Mine are vote-happy fingers, ...

Why is this not a comment (or, preferably, absent)? How is it answering my question? I don't care about other mass nouns but about evidence specifically. Your "answer" seems to be "search in google" (which I've done and have said so in my question) and "don't assume they're wrong" (which I didn't, obviously, else I wouldn't be asking. — terdon 41 secs ago

@terdon I think he is eliding a lot of context in that mass nouns can be pluralized sometimes, e.g. 'The waters of the world', 'I added many spices to the mix'. BUt you're right, that is more of a comment than an answer.

@Mitch Well, he then proceeded to downvote my Q (which is fine, and more useful than that post) and vote to close as "based on a misconception". I have yet to understand what misconception he (or is it a she?) is rfering to.
Obviously some mass nouns can be pluralized but that does not mean that all of the can!
Nobody would say there are many honesties for example.
Grrr, I also have to admit I am kind of permanently pissed at Kris because of the tone of their comments. Annoying person they are.

@terdon Yeah they would....but they'd be considered pretty weird, and hard to understand.
@terdon That is the general consensus.

@Mitch Really? Are you saying that all mass nouns can be pluralized? I'm not sure I buy that.

5:43 PM
@terdon Your 'honesty' example is surely a definite non-possibility. But some abstractions do allow it. 'truths' (because, probably, there is the generic abstract 'truth', but also it might refer to a particular instance of a truth metaphorically)
In other words I was joking with 'yeah they would'

Yes, I know. I was actually hard pressed to find an example that I couldn't pluralize :)
I still consider evidence to be one though.

Yes, plurals that grate: 'evidences' 'codes' 'softwares' 'peoples' (hmm that last one is not exactly the same thing

Argh, I hate softwares and always correct it but it's true that the alternatives are also ugly. Pieces of software is not very practical.
What's wrong with peoples? The peoples of the Earth seems fine to me.

softwares -> programs

Yeah.

5:56 PM
(but 'program' sounds more and more outdated to me)

Applications?
Still feels too mac for me.

yeah
'peoples' sounds too... purple? (as in trying to be fancy, when just 'people' is enough)

You can have wares, why not softwares?

you just can't

I feel a nursery rhyme coming on...
4 and twenty blackbirds... something something in a tree...

6:09 PM
baked in a tree

... blah blah softwares.... and then there were three.
mmm...something baking.

Can you have just one ware?

what kind of shephard is in shephard's pie?
Same with troops... one troop must be a single soldier, but you never hear about them by themselves. Maybe they don't like to be alone.

But you can have one trooper
@Mitch A shepherd's pie is a pie owned by a shepherd. A shepherd pie would be a pie made of shepherd.

> Sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye,
Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened the birds began to sing,
Oh wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king?
The king was in his counting house counting out his money,
The queen was in the parlour eating bread and honey
The maid was in the garden hanging out the clothes,
When down came a blackbird and pecked off her nose!
so, as you can see, nose is a mass noun

6:20 PM
it seems that you can only have wares or software, hardware, earthenware, etc, but not ware, or hardwares, etc.

@MattЭллен aha! another one 'clothes'. "I am wearing clothes". No one wears just one 'clothe'.

@MattЭллен I'm pretty sure that was hose in the original version.

@terdon Saucy!

@terdon really?

Well, it rhymes and is detachable. Unlike nose which rhines and is not.

6:25 PM
ah, yes, keep your nose to those rhine stones
I don't know. I think it's meant to be violent.

You left the last line out:
> : There was such a commotion: that little Jenny wren: Flew down into the garden: and put it back again
See, hose fits!
> David wrote, "In the 1950s when Listen with Mother was on BBC radio they used to add the following to the end of the rhyme after "pecked off her nose":

"There was such a commotion that little Jenny Wren
Flew down from the tree tops and popped it on again"

Whether this line was added by someone at the BBC so as not to upset little listeners or whether it is older I don' know..

@terdon it would be them not it

@MattЭллен we should vote to rename this room "The Critique of Pure Reason."

We could.

or I could write up a meta question on it
ask for suggestions and then choose the winner from the most up-votes

6:36 PM
@IceBoy You do realize the name of this room changes very often right?

that is the "description"

Ah! I see.

@TylerJamesYoung there, a question just for you.

To the owners: @RegDwigнt @Robusto would you be interested in a contest/question asking for suggestions to change this room's name from "English Language & Usage" and then choose the winner from the most up-votes?
I could write up a meta question on it

My suggestion: "The Critique of Pure Reason"

I'm not sure why the room name needs changing?

6:49 PM
Nor me. Some sites have renamed rooms, which means it's not easy to identify which site each belongs to, or identify the general chat room for the site.

Other rooms in the network are doing it, such as the Physics.SE chatroom is called "The h-bar"

Mods are annoyed with the Lounge for changing the name

I'm with @AndrewLeach. I don't see the point, the description is fun enough to play with and it makes it clear which of the many rooms is the main one.

ok, it was just a suggestion, thanks :-)

Q: Broken text formatting in the Vote Down popup

ЯegDwightWhen I click on a downvote arrow without having the required reputation on that site, this is what I'm seeing: Checked it on five different sites, both graduated and beta. Same thing everywhere. Right now I'm in Chrome under Vista, in case that matters.

@IceBoy yeah just like others I dunno. I'm not seeing an option to change it myself, so that means we'd have to ask the devs, which means that if we get fed up with it and want to change it back, we'll have to kick them again.
Plus of course the current name is neutral and self-explanatory. I don't even know what h-bar means, or which site The DMZ or The Comms Room belong to.
Actually now I found where to change it, so disregard that bit. But don't disregard the other bits.

7:05 PM
@RegDwigнt Oh? Where?

In applications where it is natural to use the angular frequency (i.e. where the frequency is expressed in terms of radians per second instead of rotations per second or Hertz) it is often useful to absorb a factor of 2π into the Planck constant. The resulting constant is called the reduced Planck constant or Dirac constant. It is equal to the Planck constant divided by 2π, and is denoted ħ (pronounced "h-bar")

@terdon it's the Edit button next to the room description. Somewhat unintuitively, it is not just for editing the description.
@IceBoy oh. I see. That reminds me of this:

room topic changed to English Language & Usage (testing): A room about English, sometimes in English (no tags)

Replace "Ginger" with "Dirac".

room topic changed to English Language & Usage: A room about English, sometimes in English (no tags)
@RegDwigнt Huh, good to know. Thanks.

7:08 PM
Well it updated to "... (testing)" for me but hasn't updated back.
What is this grammer?

@terdon oh! fiddling with our room are you? We'll see how Unix and Linux likes being Linux and Unix!

Lunix and Inux.

7:09 PM
I must relog to make the testing go away.
Actually, I should log off because I'm invited to a halloween party in less than an hour.

@RegDwigнt Really? Sorry! It disappeared by itself for me.

@terdon I suppose I don't have enough reps for that feature.
Anyway. I'm off for the time being, or for hours.

@RegDwigнt Great, now reputation is countable.

reputation has always been countable
at least in this room :D

7:14 PM
not everything that counts is countable

7:29 PM

@Mitch it is interesting that he knows the name of Dirac, but not Planck?

@Mitch :)

@Mitch That's surely modeled on my cats.
