00:00 - 03:0003:00 - 00:00

3:00 AM
It is all very complicated, I know. But I rather think it should not be.

Sure.
It is all fairly predictable, qualitatively.
It is a choice.
Especially poor people who have jobs are much better off in France.
And jobless people happen to also be much better off.
So that is the benefit.

But if the barrier to employment is so high, poor people won’t get jobs at all.

It is of course an egalitarian law: it promotes equality.
@tchrist Some poor people won't.
I don't have the solution.
Either upside comes with a downside.

Everyone I know lives knowing the axe could fall at any moment, and a guarantee that it eventually shall. The unique exception is tenured professors.

That must be an uncomfortable feeling.

3:04 AM
Of course. But you cannot illegalize it.

Well...

You cannot lock people into marriages they cannot get divorced from. That is wretched.

A marriage is between equals.

It’s like the opposite of indentured servitude, a kind of reverse-slavery.

And you cannot divorce your spouse without paying him lots of money, if he has little money of his own. Alimony.

3:05 AM
There are many very good reasons why I spent 20 years not working for anybody else.

It makes no sense to treat a large corporation and a man as equals.

Tell that to the Supremes.
They think companies have “rights”.
And that they are “persons”.

It is a vicious circle.
If you have a fairly unequal society, the rich have more power, and so they will have enough power to make policies favouring them, resulting in even more inequality.

I worked for two years with no days off, no sick time, no holidays, no vacation. And the bastards stole several thousand dollars from me, docking my overtime pay the same amount they docked normal hours to subtract for health care.

That sucks.
Can't you sue them?

3:09 AM
Of course I can.
But I would lose.
Because they have more money.
And better lawyers.

Most unfortunate.
The courts should be there to protect the weak against the strong in case of conflicts.

And I didn’t notice that the contract was full of shit when I signed it.
But they do not have to pay you for holidays, vacation, or sick time ANYWHERE.

That sucks.
They do here.

The only exception is that you have to be allowed to vote.
And to serve on a jury.
There are at times maternity rules, but it varies.
You cannot be fired for serving on a jury, for example.
There are incredibly few laws like that.

But at least you have a new job, right?

3:12 AM
Yes.
I have a great deal of hate built up in me about how abusive everything was.

But why bother with a law that says you can't be fired for jury duty, when they can just fire you without specifying a reason?

Ah, see, that’s the rub.
They have to say “Oh no, it was not that you were gone for 4 weeks on a high-profile murder jury. Honest.”

Just fire him, say you don't like his face. Fire him months in advance.
On whom lies the burden of proof?

Unless they were idiot enough to actually put something in writing that it was due to jury duty, they would get away with it.

I suppose it could be a minor benefit...
Right.
But hey, it's shower time.

3:14 AM
So without the law, if somebody had to serve on jury duty, they could fire you while you were on it.
And they did.
Just like if you go to jail, they can fire you while in prison.
And always do.
Get wet.

And when you're sick?

It is storming fiercely here.
You could simply step outside.

Too cold.

It’s 68.

We have an extremely cold August.

3:15 AM
But I dunno on the sick thing.

It is supposed to be the warmest month.

We have had an uncommonly wet August.
I mean, we sometimes don’t see half an inch of rain in July and August put together.
And now it rains like, I dunno, like it’s bloody Ireland or something.

I am so glad I got all my leaks fixed.

Wet, too.
Good.

3:17 AM
I used to have to put pails around the house with every major storm.
Lorin came in long ago, because he doesn’t like sprinkles even.

Yikes.

Randy finally came in when the thunder was bad, just like a drowned sewer rat.
I swear he would be happy to go for a swim, he likes water so much.

Aww.
Funny how different cats can be.

Very uncommon in a cat.
Yes.

I have heard of others.

3:18 AM
T

Is that he?

They are each of them completely different people.

nods

Trying to dry him off a little on my lap and a towel.

Funny.
Si hi to him, while I shower.

3:19 AM
That is just temp, right.
Ok.
Mine is pointier than yours.

Very much so!
Thanks for the Celsius chart.
Later!

Yee-haw! I just read the OED entry more closely, and there are words there in the citations to curl your eyebrows! Nakedized! Insignificantized! Joe-Millerized! Given all those, and a lot more like them, I can no longer believe anyone even batted an eyelash at little ol’ versionize. Gee willikers!
19
A: Is versionize a real word?

tchristWhateverize is always a word Yes, of course versionize is a “real word” — and no disparaging remarks about its parentage should be made in polite company. This is because ‑ize is a productive suffix in English that’s used to produce a new verb from various nouns and adjectives. That means that...

Oh, and I got to raise a supercilious eyebrow, too.
Which if even ten people smile at, I will be surprised but pleased.

lol :D

Once you’ve lifted your eyebrow, you’ve nakedized your naked eyes. How cool is that!
You know, I just could never pull off a sock.
I don’t have to sign my postings for people to know they’re mine.
“Yea, by their postings shall ye know them.”

Why exams are always boring?!

2:37 PM
Why is it that when people dispute an answer, they feel compelled to carry on an endless debate in neverending comment chains instead of simply posting their own answer presenting their own treasured view?
Shouldn’t the posting of answers be encouraged?
It would take less work to post an actual answer than to bicker in comments.
I know of no way to further encourage this behavior beyond what current mechanisms allow for.

People like to play the "I have a secret" game...
...including Professors.
Have you @tchrist heard this quotation about General Relativity when Einstein first published it? “Professor Eddington, you must be one of the three persons in the world who understand general relativity.” To which Eddington, unruffled, replies, “On the contrary, I am trying to think who the third person is!”

2:55 PM
Yes, I have.
But I know nothing more of it.

You should read his Relativity: the special and general theory. According to the author it is accessible to anyone with a high school education.

@skullpatrol Thanks.

@JasperLoy :-)

3:33 PM
So I created the tag, better name suggestions welcome.
Also gave a shot at a canonical answer, because I just shiver at the thought of having a dedicated question for "every three weeks", "every four weeks", "every five weeks", "every seven hours", "every thirty-two years"...
1
A: How do I say "every three hours" in one word?

RegDwigнtThis kind of questions can have two possible answers. We half-resurrect, half-invent an obscure half-Greek, half-Latin word that nobody ever uses or understands. Then as soon as you need to say "every 48 hours", or "every 113 weeks", you have to ask the exact same question all over again, becau...

@RegDwigнt The only word similar to recurring that springs quickly to mind is periodic, and I don’t consider it better than your own selection.

I agree^
...cyclic?

It’s starting to look like I’m going to be answering virtually the same question here every single day. This is going to grow old sooner or later. I don’t know why people keep asking the same question. I think they don’t understand what makes language language.
0
A: Adding a suffix and a prefix to the word "ocean"

tchristThe short answer is yes. It is the nature of productive affixes that they can be freely applied to any word of the appropriate category to derive new words. The longer answer depends on several things. One is just what you mean by prefixes and suffixes. I’m going to assume that you do not mean...

I similarly imagine that this will engender 57 querulous comments by people who disagree with me but who lack the testicular fortitude to provide competing answers of their own.
And you really wonder why people grow weary of this veil of tears? You shouldn’t.
Sisyphus had more fun.

Talk about missing the point.

@Freddy boring? do you have time to find them boring?
@GnomeSlice thanks

@nosmoking I never find any music boring not even music which is played in funeral, lol

@skullpatrol tell me he/she's holding a pen in his/her mouth
@Freddy the exams I meant

Ohh ok I find them boring because my exam generally finishes before time. In my class 10 mathematics exam (Important exams which decides which stream you can take) was over half an hour before!
I don't why student were complaining exam was lengthy.
Same thing happened today with Physics tests

6:34 PM
I assume nakidized means denuded.
Awesome answer, @tchrist.

@nosmoking Freddy finds everything boring except music!

@RutvikSutaria Nope there i many other things other than music like girls, movies, sleeping, eating, some kind of studies too.

I'm pretty much good with Video Games, Music, and Chicks Girls.

I am not good with video games.

@Freddy Not even Tears in Heaven?

6:52 PM
pretty boring ^

@RegDwigнt this type of music help you to sleep, Try out ;)

So it helps you fall asleep because it is not boring. Got it!

Hello guys
Would you please tell me the meaning of "enjoy time and again"?
like in "there is something for children and adults alike to enjoy time and again."
It does not mean anything at all whatsoever
whatsoever at all
@RegDwigнt do you know the meaning?

Q: What is the best content management system software for website owners?

Piers MidwinterDo you think Wordpress is the best or maybe Joomla etc? Please say what you think and why...

...

@Meysam It means you can enjoy it as many times as you want, you won't get tired of it.

7:03 PM
@GnomeSlice Thank you. Is it an idiom? I could not find it nowhere on the web.

I don't think so. I'm not quite sure where the phrase came from. It's also often written as 'time and time again'.

What about this:
"If you would like to show your appreciation to staff, a nice card or note would be appropriate. This is something we are able to enjoy time and again."
What is "this" referring to in the last sentence. "This is something..."

'This' being the 'nice card or note' [of appreciation].
They're saying they are always happy to receive such cards.

Thank you @GnomeSlice. God bless you.

Happy to help. =]

7:07 PM
Don't search the web. Search the dictionary of your choosing.

@RegDwigнt The problem was that I searched for "enjoy time and again". Darn! I should of searched for "time and again".

@hichris123 bcuz im helping usr in chat.
@Meysam should have. For the love of all holy.
You are trying too hard to pass for a native speaker.
Of is not a verb. Never was, never will be.

@RegDwigнt Jesus... I am a native speaker. All native speakers say "should of" instead of "should have", and I am no exception. QED.

No, no native speaker says "should of". There is no "ou" or "l" in how you say "should".
Y U transcribe one word but not the other?
At least be consistent.
For that matter, you don't say "of", either. There is no "f" in there.
So either write "ˈʃʊdəv", or "should have". There is no middle ground.

7:17 PM

@RegDwigнt I know it's wrong. Just wanted to sound native, and you know that I am not.

I don't know what happened today but suddenly i got vote up in all my questions and answers asked in Mathematics, Physics, chemistry and askubuntu S.E.!!!! :-)
All sum up to around 310!

Sorry, I misclicked. I was meaning to upvote FreddyKrueger everywhere. My bad!

who is FreddyKrueger?

@Freddy Villain from a series of Horror films
Freddy Krueger is the main antagonist of the A Nightmare on Elm Street film series. He appears in Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) as a disfigured serial killer who uses a glove armed with razors to kill his victims in their dreams, causing their deaths in the real world as well. He is credited as "Fred Krueger" in the original film. In the dream world, he is a powerful force and almost completely invulnerable to damage. However, whenever Freddy is pulled into the real world, he has normal human vulnerabilities. Krueger was created by Wes Craven, and had been consistently portrayed...

Ohhh yes
His acting was nice just like of joker in dark knight.
The Joker is a fictional character portrayed by Heath Ledger and the main antagonist of the film The Dark Knight, the second film in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. He is Nolan and screenwriter David S. Goyer's interpretation of the comic book character created by Jerry Robinson, Bill Finger and Bob Kane in 1940 as the archenemy of the superhero Batman. This is the third time the character has been adapted to a live-action film. == Character development == The Joker's existence is hinted at the end of the 2005 film Batman Begins, where Lieutenant James Gordon (Gary Oldman) tells Batma...

@GeorgePompidou by the way, that's one great song, and if I say so myself. I wonder where you even got it from. It's completely obscure, despite being on a best-selling hit album.
