1:00 PM
@RegDwightΒВB I disagree. Well, I mean, it's more conservative to have fewer significant digits.

If they count 89, they say 89. If they count 90, they say 90. If they count 91, they say 91. They don't say 90 just for giggles. That's what they'd use the word "approximately" for.

@RegDwightΒВB if they count 89 they can say "over 80"

@RegDwightΒВB Sounds like Nortonn S to boot

Or they could just say "a lot."

"more than you would think possible"

1:02 PM
But they are counting with a conservative method; 89 does not mean "over 80". It means "for all we know, 134; but 89 is our most conservative count".
Why do they have to operate in base 10? They may as well round down to 64.

"his arm was probably really sore afterwards"

Hahaha.

@RegDwightΒВB They're free to do that. She was stabbed over 2^6 times.

"he stabbed her so much that he must have been really sure she was dead."

:D
He's really blown the "I slipped" defence

1:06 PM
"The floor was covered in silicone lubricant. I kept trying to stand up to help her."

@simchona not everyone is Nortonn. If this site has taught us anything, that's that there's room for really totally very many such people in this world.

@KitFox the picture in my mind :D lol

@RegDwightΒВB No. Everyone is Nortonn, and the cake is a lie.

@MattЭллен "I know you are never going to believe this, but it started out with me carving ham for Sunday dinner..."
yadda yadda yadda

@MattЭллен He also blew it when, after stabbing her over 90 times, he then stole her credit-cards and went shopping.

1:07 PM
"I was so shocked, I didn't even think to put the knife down."

@MrShinyandNew安宇 that's cold.

Maybe it was in remembrance. "Second mom loved shopping..."

@KitFox that is actually part of my point earlier. Even if the very first stab is lethal, the person won't die immediately. So you stab them once, twice, and it doesn't seem to work. So you become enraged and just continue stabbing until they show no sign of life. Again, for all you know, at that point they've died of the very first blow.

"And then I felt bad for using her good towels to mop up the blood, so I borrowed her credit cards to get some nice replacements."

such a thoughtful boy

1:09 PM
See? It's all innocent.

@simchona everyone is cake, and Nortonn is a lie. But only mods can see that.

Mmm, cake.

Perhaps, perhaps. Perhaps.

I love you, @Reg.

Yeah I know.
People should stab more cake and less people.

1:12 PM
You don't have to be like that, you know.

I never said I had to.

You could just let yourself feel warm and cozy that some random net entity appreciates your existence.

That would make for a nice epitaph.

I said I didn't think about stabbing people.

Here lies RegDwight
Gone, but not forgotten by random net entities who appreciated his existence.

1:15 PM
Now you are making me feel all weird and crazy.

Nah, too much pathos.

Hahaha.

I thought the cake was the lie

Exactly. RegDwight can't lie here. Only cake can.

the cake doesn't lie, it IS the lie

1:16 PM
But it's been stabbed 91 times!

RegDwight takes the cake?

I take the cake, I cake the take, I fake the lake. I'm the cock of the walk, baby.

That reminds me, I was going to play Portal at some point. It's on my list.

Move it higher.

Portal 2 is on mine
I keep playing freecell though

1:18 PM
Same difference.

Damn, I forgot I hadn't played portal2 yet
I need to get on that

@RegDwightΒВB :D I'm sure Valve would love that review

Can I play it on the iPad?

I only played that once, with a friend. Never played the first part.
It was fun. But so are many other games. No time till Brooklyn!

@KitFox if you count watching youtube videos of other people playing it...

1:19 PM
@RegDwightΒВB No. Sleep. 'til Brooklyn!

Yes.
This was a test if you were actually Cerberus.

So it's worth it to buy the Portal/Portal 2 bundle?
Oooh, there's a level editor?

@Cerb - are you going to stand for this? Reg is implying you don't get 1990's music references
@KitFox if it's cheaper than buying them separately

debates Maybe I will ask for this for my birthday.

1:23 PM
@MattЭллен Hi! What do you think?
Of course I wouldn't get those.

@Cerberus I think you didn't get it
So you will stand for it. I see

nods

Hi! :)

I may recognize the songs if I hear them. Don't expect more.

understood

1:26 PM
@MattЭллен hey I know that song! Santa Esmeralda!

Cerberus's new motto: "Expect less"

Fewer.

Less is more.

@RegDwightΒВB Well done! I wouldn't have got that one, myself.

Fewer is more.

1:27 PM
I wouldn't know.

My husband sends me the following message: "HI HON! LOVE YOU! I'VE HAD A LOT OF COFFEE!!!"
7
I love that man.

ace! :D

You must have an exciting life!!

chuckles

But it's sweet.

1:36 PM
Right, but I am working today. I am going to get something done that doesn't involve playing with the iPad.
You know if I spent half as much time working as making it look like I'm working, I would be um...something more productive. I can't be arsed to do the math.
Hey, don't forget Writers' chat today, friends of mine!

Q: Call before sometime Is it correct

error_404x person called me twice before I pick up his phone ? How I tell him that you called me before sometimes or before 15 min. what is right way to say?

For the new proposal?

Came here to say that.)))

we need more people contributing questions to the proposal
I've added as many as I can.

We need more people. Why hasn't @Robusto thrown his hat in the ring?
And I saw that some comments had been removed. Anybody see what they were?

One Tomas complained. I replied.

1:45 PM
yeah
I was going to ask him to make a discussion, but RC has done that and more!

More to the point, my last comment was, "Please stop polluting the announcements. Open a discussion. Thanks."

Was he insulted or something?

He thought that the proposal was a dupe of here

He complained that we were trying to split ELU up and it was going to lead to a mess.
He said that all the example questions would be a perfect fit for ELU.
I said that they came from here where they were considered too basic.

So maybe we need some answers on the "Defining topicality" discussion.

1:48 PM
quite
I haven't come up with any yet...

He said ORLY and listed three questions that were allegedly answered, except that one was closed, the other one was from the early beta days and the third one has "no native speaker would ever ask this" as the accepted answer.
Anyways, I was hoping someone would purge that exchange.
Happy to see it go that fast.

should I delete my negative voted question from the proposal? Would that make sense?

Yeah, perhaps you can post a better one instead, seeing how nobody else can be bothered to.

I'm out!

out where?

1:51 PM
I might even delete some of mine if they fail to reach 10 votes. I still have a couple on my mind.

Of questions.

I could delete them though, I guess.

Like, "what is the difference between had and had had".
Or "what is the difference between 'I know that' and 'I do know that'".
We have so many questions about the emphatic do.
All by ananasae's. Every native speaker just uses it naturally.
And it's not something you need a linguist to explain.

Oh frig. Forgot to pay a bill. BBL

1:56 PM
@KitFox well, I think we should leave the positive ones up and wait for more people. Surely some other people must have questions!

2:27 PM
@Reg You can't tell me this isn't Nortonn

Q: On Some Grounds

Super Nova1 "He released some prisoners on humanitarian grounds." "He explained the plan on humanitarian grounds." "He explained the plan on theoretical grounds." Given the first sentence, does the second sentence mean that humanitarian compassion compelled him to do the explaining? Does the thir...

oh! ok, I wondered where that went
it was an alright question IMO, despite who asked it. Or was that plagiarised too?

@MattЭллен Well, the old one got deleted

yeah, I can see :)

Regardless, I'm not sure keeping questions by users who are supposed to be banned is a great thing

it does send a mixed message, for sure.

2:37 PM
Especially if he's been making new accoutns every day--it's kind of like saying, "we suspended you but because you've been so persistent we'll let you stay this time"

2:49 PM
Well. It was him again.

had to be

It never ceases to amaze me how malformed my HTML can be and still work.

browsers are forgiving things

It never ceases to amaze me how malformed my HTML can look without actually being malformed according to the standard.

Wow. I'll have to let my husband know that his text got two stars.
Also, there is something very satisfying about pruning code.

3:00 PM
Three stars. Tell him it's got three stars. Out of four.

Haha. Will do.

Also, I was going to answer your question directed at Rob but forgot.

Which question?

My guess would be that he takes the whole "support" thing literally. You support a site you'd really support. You don't support a site you'd like to have so you never have to go there.

Oh. That question.
Well, I suppose there is that.

3:03 PM
Which, coincidentally, is something that keeps crossing my mind all the time.

I think of it like overseeing kindergarteners.

We need more actual ESLers.

kiam would be perfect for the site

Haven't seen him in ages.
@kiamlaluno, we haven't seen you in ages.

Oops. Now reading the transcript, it looks like I am saying he is like a kindergartner. That's not what I meant, kiam! I meant you could help oversee them!

3:06 PM
hehehe

Geezis.

Well, I gotta run. Sea yew laitor, ally gater.

I can't decide whether I need to talk with the babysitter or not.
How neurotic am I?

Seven.
Over and out.

"No! UserX! Stop it! You're hurting the English language, it doesn't bend that way."

3:08 PM
She's downstairs with my two-year-old, saying "I shot you!"
groan
@RegDwightΒВB Laterz!

sound OK to me.
CU @Reg

And "Let's kill all the bad guys!"
I'm not sure I'm OK with that.
...
But then again.

Q: What is the name of the lemma / corolary to Murphy's law?

Nick RosencrantzMurphy's law states "Anything that can go wrong also will" and I surely remember that there also is a lemma / corolary to this law that adds "...at the worst possible time" and now I wonder where the lemma comes from and who discovered it? Am I thinking of "Finagle's law" http://en.wikipedia.org/...

What do you say to him?

I can't lose my shit over every little thing.
@MattЭллен Well, I wouldn't "shoot" my son, for one.
Although we do web each other or pow-pow, etc, so maybe there is no difference there.

3:11 PM
but is play fighting between him and his bro is OK?

And we usually don't "kill" people, we "defeat" them. Yes, I am that touchy-feely.
@MattЭллен Oh yeah. That's not my objection.
We don't want to encourage ultraviolence.
And at this age, we want to make sure it stays as cartoony and pretend as possible.
Hence the "defeating" rather than "killing."
Think GI Joe.
Stuff blows up, but no one actually gets hurt.
Nobody, good or bad, can actually land a shot.

Hmmm, well I'm probably not the person to ask. I think my parents were probably the same. I don't remember any of the cartoons I watched having people really die (he man, thundercats, transformers, etc.)

It's a losing battle though. I've already explained to my son a few times that in real life, people don't just respawn after a little while. When you are dead, you stay dead.
He learns the "I killed that guy!" and "You're dead!" from his friends and Papa.
Papa also teaches him colorful language.

So I suppose I shouldn't worry too much.
Gah, I am hungry.
And oh so poor.

3:21 PM
but what food do you have? can you make a bread sandwich?
maybe make some ice and suck on that. It used to work for me when I worked concessions at a cinema

Hey, speaking of the cake being a lie: my project lead told me that I should ask the big boss for money for doing the site training in September. He says (I shit you not) "I mean hey, you could probably get 5 or 6 grand for that."

@MattЭллен Hmm, maybe. I probably have some pasta though.

that's a good amount!

I'm pretty sure the cake is a lie.

3:22 PM
well, if it sounds to good to be true, yeah

And if it's not, no wonder the pro staff are grumbling, if the academics are sucking each off like that.
That's really pretty absurd.
And if the project lead is telling me I can get that much, it makes me wonder how much extra he gets to do a half-assed job of training people.

:D
way too much

Seriously, doesn't that sound a little steep to you?

how many days training?

For a few days, maybe a weekend.
Tops.
Travel included.

3:25 PM
maybe if it covers being paid and put up in a hotel and travel
still $5000

That's almost twice my monthly check for three days of work.

maybe half it?
@KitFox yeah, but training is big money

Hey, if they want to pay me $5,000, who am I to protest?
But it seems like a crock to me.

exactly

But if he's getting $10,000 for training, I think I should get more.

3:27 PM
(^-^)

@aedia the countdown to Curiosity's landing is on!

So here's a question.
Why not just drop the thing in a probe that is designed to cushion the impact?

@KitFox Too busy atm.

Pack it in a gyroscope at the center of a caltrop, and expend every inch of fuel slowing the thing down, then just let it land and bounce.

Does anyone know how I can set my embedded Area 51 proposals side by side in my profile?

3:40 PM
@KitFox They bounced the two previous rovers on airbags. But this one weighs 890kg.

can I build a table around them? :D

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Hmm. So the others were lighter?
Damn it. I have to go. Later!

CU!
Sorry, @cornbreadninja, I don't know how it works

@KitFox dammit, just when I was about to post about duck penises
> A Muscovy drake everts his penis in about a third of a second, at speeds of 1.6 meters per second.
> Unable to film duck penises in a real female oviduct, she built a fake oviduct out of silcone. She then managed to get a drake to mate with it. But the overwhelming force of the explosive penis broke the fake oviduct.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 blinks

3:47 PM
The whole article is worth a read

@MattЭллен I did manage to make them smaller. I wonder if the about me box acts as a div.

I can't believe I came back for this.

I can't believe I clicked.

Hey, and it would be nice if some of you would hop over to the Writers chat and make it look busy, since I won't be there to host.
blows kisses

It's science! Penis science, sure, but still!

Q: A linguistic question on the cylinder

Carlo_R.Let us see the page shown in the image below. I'm sure what the surfaces described in problems n. 7 ("surface area of a can") and n. 9 ("curved surface") are, but I'm confused with the problem n. 8 because I'm not able to understand if the surface area of the cylindrical barrel it has to be calc...

Some people abuse images.

sigh.
he carries a torch for Jasper.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 It's all about duck penises with you, isn't it?
@KitFox I already look busy because I am busy. Only goofing off during a build or server startup, etc.

time to go!

3:56 PM
@Robusto It is now that I know that duck penises go 1.6 m/s!

@cornbreadninja I think it needs to be on a math site

@Robusto Yes, yes, I understand.
The little one is playing with books, so maybe I can hang out over there for a bit anyway.
I'm trying not to freak out about not getting anything done for the past two days.

4:18 PM
@simchona where is Gigili or Jasper when you need them?
not that they are the only mathy people, just the ones I know to be mathy.

Maybe he should ask his teacher or TA, since they will be the ones grading it?

Duck penises?
(Qu)ack.

@cornbreadninja Both of the images in your profile are wrapped in <p> tags, so they will each be their own paragraph and will therefore not be side-by-side, but one on top of the other, as paragraphs usually are.

4:40 PM
@KitFox Which site?

26
English as a Second Language

Proposed Q&A site for people learning English, whose questions are too basic for the English Language and Usage site.

Currently in definition.

@RegDwightΒВB I am invisible. ;)

Why am I the only who voted on the cylinder question?

@simchona Which one?
@KitFox Oh, thank you. I am one of the followers, now.
