I'm a solid ArcGIS user. 2 decades experience behind my belt, under the bridge. I love arcpy, but performance is getting too painful to continue to abide by quietly. Time to retrieve list of 405 feature classes from a file-gdb in arcpy: 116.5 secs. Same using command line ogrinfo: 11.6 secs. A full order of magnitude slower, and I haven't even done any work yet! :( :(
...and if I tell ogrinfo to use the openfilegdb driver instead of the FileGDB driver from the Esri SDK it's 7.3 secs.

...and if I use OGR python from stem to stern instead of command line tools it drops another order of magnitude to 0.8secs. Enough. @Esri, #this-is-broken.

oops, made a mistake in original statistics: the average for arcpy is ~60s, ogrinfo is ~13s, and ogr python is ~0.7s. Still horrible, but not as egregious as first posted.
