I found this comment in a thread here: http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/2264/what-is-the-most-annoying-fact-about-the-gis-market-industry/2280

The comment is: "To know ArcGIS is to know ESRI software and some GIS. To know open source GIS is to know GIS."

Do you guys agree? Honestly I only know ArcGIS (I've only been using GIS "seriously" since january or so) and I wonder if I've maybe been developing habits that aren't transferable to other GIS's

@socks I've been using ArcGIS and Esri software for many years and I cannot recall a day when I did not learn something new about GIS. I looked quite a bit at open source software for a few years about 5 years ago and while I was impressed by a lot of what I saw it often seemed to be familiar functionality presented in a variety of GUIs which meant I found it hard to predict where functions were likely to be placed.
