@gandalf3 so a few days with bspm, right? What do you think? Functionality-wise, is it better than i3?

I'm liking it so far. Doing all configuration through its ipc interface gives everything a sort of immediate flexibility
I never did end up doing much with i3's ipc interface, so I can't properly compare..
But that's one thing in favor of bspwm: you can't avoid using bspc, and means you'll gain the ability to configure everything whether you want to or not :P
I also prefer bspwm's splitting behavior over i3
Though I'm sure you can get either to emulate the other with enough scripting in most regards
The one main gripe I have is the lack of node-level stacking layouts (i.e. tabs)
You can do it for a whole workspace, just not on a node (window) level (yet?)

Okay sure

There's also some interesting built in manipulations you can do to windows/workspaces etc.
Rotate, swap with largest, balance etc.

That sounds interesting...

And you can manipulate tiled windows with the mouse

12:49 AM
As in drag and drop sort of stuff?

Sort of

Okay

Like, mod+drag RMB will swap the windows on which you mouse-down and mouse-up

Okay, that's cool
Do status bar and launcher stuff pretty much carry over without a change?

And there's a pseudo tiling mode which is nice for windows which don't work great when resized
@TARDISMaker Just about

12:51 AM
@gandalf3 Okay
So like dialog boxes

yeah
Or preferences windows
Stuff which you'd rather not float, but really don't work when stretched across the whole screen..

Yeah

@TARDISMaker The only thing I've changed specifically to fit bspwm is not have rofi launch everything through i3-msg exec

How are workspaces handled?
@gandalf3 Okay
So is it harder to launch applications based off of inputs then?

You can set them up i3 style, but I now have mine the way I wanted to set up i3: 10 on each monitor
(all independent)

12:54 AM
Okay, cool

@TARDISMaker You mean, jump to a given input, run something with rofi, jump somewhere else, then have whatever you ran open its windows on the input you ran it on?

Well I just mean executing applications in general

I know there are window rules you can apply, but I haven't ported over mine yet
The default config has a few examples for gimp etc
It looks like they are pretty similar
But everything being done through bspc means you can add and remove them dynamically without a fuss :D

Okay, sure

The config file is actually just an executable file you can write in whatever language (the default is a shell script)
To reload settings, just run the script :D
Though if you put anything else in there (like sxhkd) you'll have to do something to prevent starting duplicates when you do that
(like i3's exec vs exec_always)

1:17 AM
sxhkd is pretty flexible too (e.g. you can do combinations chains, which lets you do things like i3's modes)
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work with single-key "combinations", but you can do combos without modifier keys
like A+B
Could be useful for inserting special chars maybe
e.g. t+m would have xdotool fire a backspace (to get rid of the t) and then insert a ™ somehow
Wait, I take that back; single keys work just fine!!
:O
I guess its just single modifiers that don't work..

1:44 AM
ah well, that's what xcape is for.

11 hours later…
12:58 PM
@gandalf3 Okay, cool
So I could maybe setup a mode for mouse control?
(that would be really awesome)
@gandalf3 @David Do we really still need to have iKlsr's messages pinned? It's been about a week now...

9 hours later…
9:54 PM
@TARDISMaker nope.
Now we just need more star worthy messages to bury @iKlsR's.

10:43 PM
proof bounties work I saw that yesterday, or the day before. Read it, sounded odd. but did not do anything more. Today saw the bounty, so I downloaded the blend and in a few minutes found the problem.
@VRM let me know if it works. :)
PS had to super ping you, you had not been in the farm in over a week.

11:18 PM
Well this looks very interesting. Good idea there.

11:57 PM
@David :)
@David Yeah!
Is it getting any publicity?
