4:00 PM
Fun fun. Love me some paperwork.

I'm screwed

Still working on that sorting algorithm @Morwenn?

I had to wake up to bake a pandan financier again. Otherwise, it's a good day. Family party at noon, and party with friends this evening.
@RubberDuck Which algorithm?

Maybe that wasn't you.

My boss just sprayed a perfume I'm allergic to. It makes me sneeze and suffer a lot.

4:02 PM
Someone was writing a custom sort a while back. Could have sworn it was you.

@RubberDuck I'm still working on a sorting library, but I didn't really implement any actual algorithm by myself.

Ahh. My mistake.

I'm only trying to make it a general purpose sorting library (whatever it means) and the default sorter is made with blocks of the library.
When you want to sort an object, it checks whether the object has a sort method and use it if there is one. Otherwise, if it's an std::array or a fixed-size C array whose size is inferior to 10, it uses sorting networks, otherwise it uses a pattern-defeating quicksort for random access iterables and an insertion sort for bidirectional iterables.

Still sounds like an interesting project to me.

using default_sorter = self_sorter<
    small_array_sorter<
        hybrid_sorter<
            insertion_sorter,
            pdq_sorter
        >,
        std::make_index_sequence<10u>
    >
>;
The problem is to devise generic building blocks instead of writing just one big sorting object.

Q: Webapp : Rest Client API design and implementation (with RestEasy)

@CaptainObvious Broken code

@CaptainObvious language please?

I'm not smart enough to create a new sorting algorithm, but I can try to take the best out of the interesting ones.

@Morwenn I read that as traitor_sorts.

@Hosch250 It sorts an array then shuffles it when you're not watching.

4:07 PM
Well, I think coming up with some heuristics on when to use which kind of sort is pretty interesting stuff.
Lol.
3

@EBrown Pretty strong window then at least ;)

Yes, but my heuristics are only compile-time ones. Otherwise, I actually writing a novel algorithm :)

@skiwi Well the way the car got hit, the trunk pushed to front of itself up instead of into the window. :)

I wonder though if everything else on the car (except the back of course) is withotu damage

@Malachi It is working again.

4:10 PM
@skiwi Well that's why they are taking more time on it, apparently.

@Hosch250 awesome

Maybe the unit tests aren't passing.

ok got it. Thanks for pointing i am at a wrong forum. — bornleo 42 secs ago
sigh

@RubberDuck Obligatory SE is NOT a forum.

Respectfully Disagree != Down Vote

4:14 PM
Right @Hosch250?

@EBrown Sentra isn't a Versa. I owned both.. Versa is a sub-compact model, Sentra is bigger

Problems on meta @Malachi?

@RubberDuck no, not meta. --> codereview.stackexchange.com/a/101572/18427 what do you think about what I proposed?

@Mat'sMug I know, that was the thing. It's like turning a Sentra into a Versa.

oh lol

4:15 PM
I was changing the analogy from Focus -> Fiesta, to Sentra -> Versa. :)

@EBrown Let's invade DIY.
I post a question - I bought a Sentra. I want a Versa. How can I remedy this.

@RubberDuck I should have used a question mark....

You write an answer - get in a car accident.

yeah.... nope.

@EBrown here

4:17 PM
@Hosch250 Well I quickly figured out how to shorten the curb-length of a Fusion by about six inches. :)
@Legato This isn't suspicious.

It should be, but run it, it's important.

No way.

Omg.

What is Javaliant anyway?

This is perfection.

4:18 PM
I've seen it before, but I don't have Java on my system.

Just a random name I chose when I made the github account.
I started out with java and I wanted to be valiant about learning it I guess?

@RubberDuck A cross-poster!? Poof, gone.

@Malachi I've edited the text a bit on your answer. Feel free to revert/improve

@Hosch250 You should at least have a JRE.

@Legato Once you put Java in, you can't get it out without reinstalling Windows.

4:21 PM
@Legato I am keeping this forever. :)

@Malachi I like what you did actually. If the data will be exactly equal to one more often than not, then it's slightly more efficient.

I'm glad to hear it. :)

@Legato s/here/hear

Premature optimization maybe.

@Hosch250 It's just a single file you delete, I'm not sure what you're talking about.

4:22 PM
I searched my registry and file system before and after installing/uninstalling Java.
There were Java files left all over by the uninstaller.
Millions of them.

@IsmaelMiguel looks good to me

@Malachi If you see any spelling mistake, please edit it. This keyboard eats key presses

@Hosch250 I think those are just registry entries.

Files too.

@RubberDuck from what I can read of the code, they are passing in a filename and retrieving a specific file, if there is more than one file with the same filename then there is probably something wrong with the file structure? am I reading that wrong?

4:26 PM
I've never heard of that. How large, in total?

I got my first bounty! :D It may not be got a CR post, but I'll take what I can get.

That's awesome. @Jamal Congrats.
Now just three more people from here need to vote it so you also get a badge. ;)

Since it was answered the same day, it must've been an "exceptional answer" bounty.

@Jamal Nice info! I wasn't aware of it

Rather lengthy question posted.

@SimonAndréForsberg What do you recommend for JSON parsing?

@Legato In Java? Jackson. In Groovy? Groovy has some built-in stuff for that.

Thank you Simon.

@Malachi I like your answer.

thank you @Legato

I hate love clients!
Specially those who just storm through the store!

Client looks over your shoulder

anyone remember what I was going to do at lunch? I know I said it in chat somewhere

@Malachi Eat?

you do that at lunch time?
I usually write more code, but at home....

4:55 PM
@Hosch250 The thing is that I'm 6m away from the entrance, while the client simply rushes and doesn't listen
And to help even more, I was going to say to a client, over email: "Carp Richard"

@EBrown @EBrown you can chain inheritance

@nhgrif Someone else editted it and spoilt it... :/ I've rolled back. — Hassan Althaf 3 mins ago
@Malachi ^^

#LessonLearned

Unfortunately, Hassan hasn't learned his lesson. Question is still unclear, and code broken.

Exactly.

@SimonAndréForsberg a chat invite seems in order

The lesson is learned when Hassan sees that his version of the question is broken and Hassan himself makes the necessary fixes.
Unless @Mat'sMug was implying lesson learned for @Malachi?

Damn, you're right. Looks likeI will have to roll back to the prime version. — Hassan Althaf 3 mins ago

Saw that.
:|
Case in point though.
Blames Malachi.

@nhgrif I was

It's not Malachi's fault it was broken. But the question shouldnt have been asked in the first place and we need to stop making assumptions for the OP.

Of course it isn't. I just hate that he blames him, and yes that's exactly the reason we can't make assumptions for people. The OP himself is making assumptions about his code working so well that it's the other guy who broke it.

5:29 PM
When we bend over backwards to turn off-topic posts on-topic instead of expecting the OP to do that, we are encouraging people to ask off-topic questions since they know the community will fix it.
We have enough zombies to answer. I don't think we're in desperate need of more questions, are we?

if the edit wasn't broken.....

I don't even think about it as a slippery slope, it's just about a minimum cost of entry to me, that really isn't asking much, that in fact they should want since it would give them the best results, but meh.

Malachi, the only edit I would have been okay with would have been rolling back his edit since it started as on topic and he edited into unclear. Anything but a rollback (or don't touch) makes too large an assumption in some way

@nhgrif See his answer on the meta.

What if instead of your edit, I stuck comparative review tag on it?

5:32 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Fixed, can this be re-opened? — Hassan Althaf 1 min ago

If he didn't rollback, wait for me to look

if I weren't a mod, I'd vote to reopen. looks like an ok question, not blatantly asking for help fixing a problem
waiting for a change in question's status to roomba da comments

I've voted to open it

Lol, there's an ad on that tutoring site I use for someone that wants to learn some more VBA
I'm not that desperate for the money though

Can you translate that thing to me?
Please?
I really don't get it...

?

The commitstrip
It's French to me
I can't understand it

They're making fun of people who write their code in French

@IsmaelMiguel fromage = cheese. "API of chesse"
what Jeroen said ^^

@SimonAndréForsberg I know that

I don't think he literally means he doesn't get that part, but why is it funny.

6:00 PM
And Jeron is on my ignore list

I think it's about people obfuscating their code so no one else can really use it.

@Legato Exactly!

and they're just crazy in general. I don't see what's "great" about having to redevelop everything if switching language

I was thinking something somewhat there

job security

6:01 PM
You confused me

@IsmaelMiguel that's an interesting decision to have made.... but either way, CommitStrip is too, right?

@SimonAndréForsberg Well, I decided that this is not a daycare and I won't have to put up with man-childs.
That's why he is on ignore

I'm mostly upset that he spelled my name wrong. It's only 6 letters after all

And I have CommitStrip on ignore because it isn't funny
And I'm simply not interested
I have to think too much to get the jokes
And when I get them, they suck
Because the fun was lost in the way

He got butthurt because I was tired of him dragging out a conversation and I told him I would stop replying
Which is apparently how man-childs behave now

@SimonAndréForsberg But I want to understand the joke. In fact, this was the first time someone explained one of those

All the room's tags fit me but one, so I fixed it.

I agree. This is just business.
I feel like if people down-vote a question and it gets closed and reopened they should get a signal of some sort.

@Legato That is a good idea, but it could reveal what users downvoted. How someone could find it out? No idea

6:14 PM
a little ping in your SE inbox wouldn't reveal anything to anyone

^

True
Can you see others' -1 due to downvotes?

Downvotes happen to people all the time, do you notice them?

That's not what I meant

This wouldn't be different voting is anonymous. You'd only come close to noticing it if someone actually posted an answer, you wouldn't see that if the question was closed on arrival.

6:17 PM
On the reputation tab, on your profile, can you see others' downvotes?

why don't you check someone's profile and check?

^

Because I don't know if someone else downvoted something

if I downvote one of your posts, your reputation tab will show "-2 Downvoted"

You can see if you get a downvote from your profile.

6:19 PM
...
If I go to, say, Simon's profile, can I see his downvotes on the reputation tab?

votes are anonymous
you can't see who's voting for who
nobody can

@Legato That one is quite mesmerizing! It looks fantastic!

the tag is 25% badgeable

I'm too ashamed to post my code

that's not how you learn

6:34 PM
Besides, it crashes VB6 if you try to build it

hmm

VB6 crashes when opening the designer to show the form

too many controls? overlapping ones?

I have around 10 controls
And a menu

that shouldn't be a problem

6:35 PM
And 1 hidden control, I think
I know

I've seen VB6 code compile, with 160-some controls on a form, some overlapping across like 3 layers

I can re-send the project to you, if you want

just upload it to, say, GitHub

I'm not sure if I want that shameful thing showing there :/

but if you haven't already, you should try the TicTactics , it's very cool. and try playing a game, too - it has nothing to do with Tic-Tac-Toe really

VB-6 have arrays?

6:46 PM
yup
BASIC 2.0 on Commodore-64 had arrays... I don't see why VB6 wouldn't have them!

Tic Tac Toe totally feasible in that case.
I have no clue, arrays are pretty basic, but have to check.

Why a Commodore64?

Probs.

because the first code I ever wrote was on that ...thing.

6:51 PM
The first code I wrote I was on 9th grade and it was Pascal

Wow.
Nice. :)

I tried to impress a girl with that
It wasn't effective

You can't tell, you have to show. :P
The first code I ever wrote was on Codecademy in JavaScript. Not really inclined to go back, though I should probably brush up some on JS.

I mean, I wrote a program in Pascal with her. She was somewhat bored to death and made me write pink text

With? Unless she's into code in the first place the results will be all she'd be concerned with.

The good thing about Javascript is that you can almost run PHP on your browser
