7:50 AM
Chance of cyclone in my state!

:O

@Freddy Oh, be prepared! I hope it will become milder soon.

@DamkerngT. have you seen this

@IceBoy Yes, I have.

strange that I found it posted in the physics chat room :/

7:58 AM
Hah!
@Freddy I think Elm Street could be a little safer. (Your avatar is a perfect fit for the Halloween!)
The ear-pads of my headphones are wearing off! :(
I don't know why but the left side is much worse.

can you buy just the pads?

@IceBoy It looks like the ear-pads of this model aren't replaceable.

perhaps you can find something that is a close fit?

I wonder if I could do that.

take it into a store that sells stuff like that
it's worth a try :)

8:13 AM
What's strange is that I can't find it on online stores here. Most of the sites I found are in India!
@IceBoy Definitely!

btw

Hooray!

:D

I thought it was Math History only.

so did I

8:16 AM
But Science History is welcome, too!

they're still trying to define the scope
of topics
I have their chat room starred as a favorite :D

:-)

Q: Snail animation in Gmail chat

Ionică BizăuI resized the chat window, and this snail appeared (also with animation): Why did it appear? What's its significance?

Anonymous
Dinosaurs are good too, but I was sad there wasn't a snail!

user116848
1:59 PM
I didn't know people used gmail chat. Although I use the email.

Anonymous
I'm certain people do

Anonymous
I'm not one of those people, however

user116848
So, how do they know who is currently available?

2:15 PM
I prefer it for video chat instead of skype.
@Arrowfar On left hand side where there is list of your friend, there are different sign against their name like available, busy, etc

1 hour later…
user116848
3:27 PM
@Freddy I see. Thanks.

4:05 PM
@snailboat Mine aren't! *sobbing*
@snailboat It looks a lot like a snail!

user116848
Hiya @DamkerngT.

Hi!

Anonymous
Hello!

user116848
@DamkerngT. Do you think my answers on ELL are okay? Because it seems like not many folks like them. Many answers that I have given in the past week are at zero votes.

user116848
Or is it okay?

4:19 PM
I don't think of clicking on the upvote button as "like" (as in Facebook), but you could say that we upvote the posts we like.

user116848
@DamkerngT. haha Yeah, I hate facebook.

Lately, I upvote only answers I think are really good.

user116848
Tell me about it! :)

user116848
@DamkerngT. Yeah, me too.

user116848
facebook is all likey likey.

4:20 PM
This doesn't mean that the rest of the answers which I didn't vote on are bad.
@Arrowfar It's too late for all of us not to have Facebook around us.

user116848
SE is good in a way that we have the option of 'dislikey' too

user116848
@DamkerngT. Yep. That is true.

user116848
Unless something better than facebook comes along.

Some speculated that facebook will collapse on itself, not because of something new or better.

user116848
Yeah, some people are leaving facebook I hear.

4:23 PM
(Now I'm confused if I should capitalize the F of Facebook.)

user116848
They have their reasons

user116848
The main one being facebook is too personal and it can make things messy for some folks, you know.

user116848
So, I like the comment that Jasper made in chat once:

user116848
in The Overlook Hotel, Sep 16 at 18:54, by Will Hunting
It is painful to see pictures of someone you like with someone else.

user116848
On facebook that is.

user116848
4:26 PM
Very true LOL

Ahh

user116848
Oh, but it is not my comment lol

user116848
I just starred that comment there :)

@snailboat Maybe because this voter haven't read any questions yet today!

The ones with a lot of upvotes are usually the ones that get promoted

In the Hot Network Questions sidebar

When a question gets promoted in the HNQ sidebar, it inflates the votes a lot

I don't think it means people dislike my answer, although that's possible

Anonymous
Probably most people didn't even see it :-)

Oh, my! This one is our hot question: ell.stackexchange.com/q/38100/3281

Anonymous
It's not very hot :-)

I guess we can learn a language any way we like. :-)

Anonymous
94 views in 3 hours means it probably has a little bit of promotion

4:35 PM
This one probably was the next to last hot question on ELL: ell.stackexchange.com/questions/37807/…
I think ELL is becoming English and Early Modern English Language Learners.

Q: what is the term of a person that cannot be honest with themselves and fakes happiness

alliewhat is term of an emotionally void person who cannot be honest with themselves and fakes their own happiness? and they obsess about a childhood that was terrible but the make it into a fantasy.

Maybe it's just me, but I think I don't understand the question. At least, I'm not sure I can guess the meaning right.

Anonymous
The title of the question sounds like it's asking "What is the term for (What do you call) a person that isn't honest with themselves and pretends to be happy when they're not"

Anonymous
Something like that

Anonymous
The question body muddies things somewhat

4:46 PM
@snailboat The feeling I got when I read the title was entirely differently from when I read the details. I'm not sure where the obsess, emotionally void, childhood, and fantasy come in.

Anonymous
Yeah, the question body makes it a bit less clear what they're asking

user116848
@DamkerngT. I gave it a try though. It looked like I knew what they were asking.

user116848
Let's see.....

user116848
Maybe I am wrong. Maybe, maybe....

user116848
Like "She/He looks at the world through rose-colored glasses."

user116848
4:55 PM
But they are very vague in what they are asking.

user116848
Oh, it already has a close vote.

user116848
Oh, okay.

user116848
Forget it Arrow!

user116848
@DamkerngT. Have you watched Tennage mutant Ninja turtles film?

@Arrowfar Nope.

5:00 PM
@Arrowfar What question?

user116848
@snailboat I asked it later in ELU chat, Matt answered.

Anonymous
I didn't see a question to be ignored

user116848
It was a riddle for you. Well, I had pinged you the previous day with the question.

user116848
Never mind.

Anonymous
Never mind is two words

Anonymous
5:05 PM
Or at least it's standardly written with a space

Anonymous
You could consider that a matter of spelling if you like

user116848
okay, thanks.

Question of the day: How would you pronounce blithely?

user116848

user116848
Seems like a stupid audio.

user116848
5:13 PM
I use my own pronunciation dictionary though.

So, Emma voiced it.

Anonymous
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people didn't voice it

> I wonder, is there an offensive English word for people, who offence the others? I mean a word, that translates literally as "a guy, who offence people" and can not be applied to other circumstances, but anyone see more that this simple meaning in it and would not like to hear it about him\her.
There is no such thing in my language, so I can not use translators here unfortunately.
http://ell.stackexchange.com/questions/38123/offensive-word-for-people-who-offence-the-others
Ahh... Is that how machines construct sentences? (They say they can't use translators here, so I guess that they used a translator to write their question.)

user116848
Culprit, offender, wrongdoer....

Anonymous
I don't think their single word request has an answer

Anonymous
5:18 PM
But you could suggest terms they could use in that situation which have a slightly more general meaning

Anonymous
Nevermind is on the rise!

Anonymous
COCA has 3428 results for never mind and 100 for nevermind

Anonymous
Of course, some of those are for Nirvana's album Nevermind

The Rise of Nevermind!

Anonymous
5:20 PM
But I wonder if eventually nevermind will usually be spelled without a space

Anonymous
Both Google Books and COCA are lagging informal online usage

Maybe it will be like anyway, goodbye, etc. someday.

Anonymous
Because people who write nevermind today will have it copy edited into never mind in published works

Anonymous
If we search GloWbE, we find 13284 for never mind and 1835 for nevermind

Anonymous
I suspect that reflects some copy editing, too, and that the proportion of people who think it should be spelled nevermind is actually higher

5:22 PM
Hi Snail and Dam!

Anonymous
I would not be surprised to see it overtake never mind in my lifetime

Anonymous
Hello!

Hi!

Anonymous
Arrowfar is here, too

I was reading a paragraph on the BBC news and I think there was a typo mistake or maybe I did not understand it properly.

Anonymous
5:23 PM
What was the paragraph?

Here is the paragraph:
if hearing that the CEO [chief executive] of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it's worth the trade-off with my own privacy," he added.
But I think it should have been:
if hearing that the CEO [chief executive] of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspires people to insist on their equality, then it's worth the trade-off with my own privacy," he added.
I made one correction.

Anonymous
Ah, it got cut off (it should have "So, at the beginning)

Anonymous
> "So if hearing that the CEO [chief executive] of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it's worth the trade-off with my own privacy," he added.

Who feels alone, or inspires*

Anonymous
5:25 PM
This is a coordination of non-finite verb phrases

Okay.

I'm back!

Great!

3. if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can [inspire people to insist on their equality]

nods -- The inspire there is fine.

Anonymous
Help, bring, and inspire are all non-finite verb forms.

Okay.
I am watching both of you.

PS. Seeing that Macmillan changes the ads and YouTube changes my suggestion list according to my surfing pattern, I feel like our Big Brother is a stalker.

Anonymous
@user62015 Oh, my explanation was finished

Anonymous
5:31 PM
I can try to elaborate if you still don't get it

(Perhaps, from now on I will get stalking movies suggested when I search for anything on IMDb.)
@user62015 I don't have anything to add. :-)

Thanks.
I am done for the day.

English perfect is a mystery unsolved for all learners!

user116848
Why are people asking for offensive words? Here:

user116848
+1. The meaning is correct, but are they really offensive? I do not see that dictionary marks them offensive or at least informal, like nigger, nerd, noob. — klm123 8 mins ago

user116848
5:41 PM
@klm123 Well, if you want 'offensive' then try 'lowlife'. — Arrowfar 3 mins ago

user116848
We are not some swear words dictionary lol

5:53 PM
It looks like they just want to provoke us to post the most heavily tabooed word of all English words as the answer.

user116848
@DamkerngT. Yeah

Anonymous
I voted to close

Anonymous
This question appears to be off-topic because it is a request for a word or short phrase which unfortunately does not exist. (I originally wrote "single-word request", but the question was edited after my close vote.) — snailboat 3 mins ago

I had another strange conversation with Siri today!

user116848
@DamkerngT. Great application :D

(The screenshot was made after the fact. The first time Siri showed the alarm list, both alarms were off.)
Indeed. But today she double-checked me, "just to be clear". :-)

user116848
@DamkerngT. Can one install this application in computer?

user116848
6:12 PM
Or is it only a cell app?

I don't know, but it comes with recent models of iPhone/iPad.

user116848
Yeah.

I think Android has something similar, too.

user116848
nods

I'm also thinking about buying a new phone. It looks like a good smartphone is much cheaper now.

I wonder if TH means Thailand.
Maybe TH is for Thin. :-)

I was assuming the 64 was for 64GB

Anonymous
But now I'm questioning that, since your iPad is presumably not 93GB...? :-)

6:20 PM
Definitely not!
:-)
Mine is just 64GB, same as yours.

Anonymous
A decidedly odd number.

Anonymous
iPads are apparently 129 more than iPhones! 129 what, I'm not sure

129 more means $129 less, perhaps. :-)

Anonymous
I still haven't updated from iOS 7

Oh, me either!
I remember an upgrade on my old iPad ruined a fews apps.
Oh, another good thing that I still keep my old iPad around is that it has an older version of PEU while the PEU was auto-upgraded on the new iPad. And the older version searches better!
