10:00 AM
(I think "year 2000" without the got stuck in my head.)

Anonymous
In the year 2000!

Thanks for the correction, btw!
I mean it wasn't even supposed to be written as 2000, it was Y2K.
I think I must have lost the article before year back then. :-)
Now I got it back. Yay!

Anonymous
Y2K is pronounced like why two kay

IPA is beyond me on my phone

10:03 AM
Most people around me saying it as "year 2000" back then, I think.
(I've never had any chance to work with real native speakers.)

Anonymous
Oh, I've never heard anyone pronounce Y2K that way

The same went to salary.
10k, 15k, etc.
I mean what they wrote and what they spoke were not always strictly related.

Anonymous
I wouldn't be surprised if I heard 10k pronounced like ten thousand, though ten kay would be fine too

I do that (10k = ten kay)

Anonymous
It's also possible I'm suffering from selective memory and people did pronounce Y2K the way you said

Anonymous
10:09 AM
Though people would never say "in year 2000" regardless

I don't think so. I believe that it's likely that people around me back then pronounced it incorrectly.
Just like what Maulik and I did today.

I never saw that show I linked to a picture of, but my friends went around quoting it

I didn't know it was from a show!

Anonymous
And if I jokingly said "in the year 2000", they took it as a reference to that show

Anonymous
Although it wasn't exactly a phrase he invented

10:14 AM
That's Conan

Oh, Conan O'Brian?

Anonymous
I never watched his show, but

Me either.

Anonymous
I did see the Simpsons, which he worked on at one point

Anonymous
The monorail episode

10:15 AM
I don't watch Simpsons that often, I think.
(Not sure which tense I should use.)

Anonymous
That tense is fine. I always say the though

Oh, it's The Simpsons!

Anonymous
You could also use the past tense if you wanted. Then it would be a statement about back when the episode(s) we're talking about aired, I guess

Anonymous
Or that general era, whenever it was.

I haven't watched it for a while, so I thought of the past tense first; then I changed my mind, since I might watch it again if I run into it.
And I wasn't sure how to classify that thought into which English tense.
I found this sentence on Wikipedia:
> She is the Miss Globe Venezuela titleholder for 2006, and was the official winner of the Miss Globe International pageant held in Saranda, Albania on October 1, 2006.
Oh, the "Miss Asia for 2006" led me to this very cute page! books.google.com/books?id=KT7VVxJHcOYC&pg=PA108
I'd love to buy that book!
It's written in Japanese but I think I have no problem reading it.

Anonymous
10:26 AM
That sentence seems okay

sobbing -- The book is not on Amazon.com.

Anonymous
It looks like only the introduction is in Japanese

I really like the way they demonstrate the usages.

Anonymous
I wonder how effective learning that way is

I would say "very".

Anonymous
10:31 AM
It lets you ignore your L1

nods
I really want to buy that book!
2,052円 on Rakuten.co.jp.
Have you ever bought anything from there?
I hope that Kinokuniya sells it.

If not, you can ask them to order it :-)

11:29 AM
I need to put this thought somewhere: We should have a site like CodeReview.SE but for written English

11:54 AM
I thought of something along the same line last month maybe (I thought of Code Golf back then). What's more interesting is who would participate the site. :-)

12:49 PM
Hi all :) would someone please check my sentence to see if it sound natural? "This canvas is not gessoed well enough"

I don't know this verb "gessoed", I'd better pass this one. :-)

Hi :) I've just read the following page and I thought I can use use Gesso as a verb. I meant "gesso" was not applied to the canvas adequately.
7
Q: Which nouns can be used as verbs?

unorSomeone told me that the English language is special (compared to German, at least) in the way that every noun could be used as a verb. I think this phenomenon is called supine. Is this correct? Examples: house → to house well → to well phone → to phone table → to table lamp → to lamp At fir...

Gesso ( "chalk," from the , from ) is a white paint mixture consisting of a binder mixed with chalk, gypsum, pigment, or any combination of these. It is used in artwork as a preparation for any number of substrates such as wood panels, canvas and sculpture as a base for paint and other materials that are applied over it. Traditional gesso "Gesso", also known "glue gesso" or "Italian gesso" is a traditional mix of an animal glue binder (usually rabbit-skin glue), chalk, and white pigment, used to coat rigid surfaces such as wooden painting panels as an absorbent primer coat substrate for...
I have found few examples by Google but I am not quiet sure if they are correct.

I'm not used to this medium. It might work, I think, but I'm not very sure.
This may be unrelated, but in acrylics painting we usually prime the canvas (before painting). Gesso seems like something we do after the painting has already been finished.
Eh? After reading the Wikipedia page a little, gesso sounds a bit more like "before the painting".
Oh, maybe I already used gesso myself a few times, but I knew it as "primer".

1:08 PM
Yes Gesso is one of mediums used in priming
We Varnish the painting when its finished

I see.
Then, maybe: This canvas wasn't primed with gesso well enough.

This one sounds better, Thank you :)

No problem. (I still feel not absolutely sure about the sentence, but I think it's passable.)

Can't we say "isn't" ?

Oh, yes. The tense is your choice.
I think isn't, wasn't, and hasn't been are all possible.
Depending on the context, I mean.
I tend to prefer wasn't.
Or hasn't been if the priming has just finished.

1:16 PM
This is one of my biggest problems. I think when we say is, then we are describing its current state(a fact).

You are right.
But in passive voice, the action took place before we say the sentence.
However, we can use is primed when we describe general ideas.
But that's not your case, I think.

That's right.

Another case I think is primed is fine, is when the canvas is still getting primed.

Hmm... I think I need to study the passive voices again. Thank you again DamkerngT.

You're welcome.
Hey, I've gained a few more pounds this month. :D
I think I need more exercise. :-)

1:36 PM
:D I think I have Hyperthyroidism :) I am 71 kg for years.
I eat as much as I can but nothing changes.

Wow! Good for you!

1:56 PM
hello holy people
i need some help from you
is anybody here?

What is the problem? I will try if I can help.

@DamkerngT. i have come up with a title for an upcoming project

Yes?

i want to know what comes to your mind first when you see it

Okay. What's the title?

2:02 PM
ok, it might be very good. don't try to steal, it is copyrighted by me

LOL

"the emerging reality"

Some sort of Second Life?

@DamkerngT. and...?

You asked about what would come to my mind first. :D

2:04 PM
@DamkerngT. and second?

It makes me feel like I'm not in the real world.
Maybe this reality, which is emerging, is actually the real one. :-)

@DamkerngT. haha i'll assume you are not kidding

Just a bit; but I really feel that way.

do you get any thoughts about something new blowing up minds like a big obvious suspense just revealed and everyone on awe?

Could be, I think.
It's kind of paradoxical.

2:08 PM
@DamkerngT. how?

I mean it is emerging, but it is also a reality, then again we already are in the reality.
(Suppose that we are really in the reality.)
But because of that, it could sound interesting.
"Intriguing" may be a better word.

@DamkerngT. that is very important. you hit the nail man... cool

Now you made me curious about your project. :-)

@DamkerngT. it is a science documentary

Oh, I see. It's a great title.

2:11 PM
@DamkerngT. thanks

No problem. (Not sure that I helped much, though.)
When will I be able to watch it on my cable TV? :-)

and not on cable TV

Oh! -- sad

@DamkerngT. atleat a month to be released

I will wait. :D

2:22 PM
@DamkerngT. sure. i will first post the youtube link here

Thanks in advance.
