Dear moderators, in line with the discussion that happened here, I'm feeding in the details. I'm contemplating adding a hadrodynamics which I expect, would subsume ques pertaining to Walecka, chiral $\sigma -\omega$ type models, or more loosely, even ques pertaining to effective Chiral Lagrangians in low energy regime of QCD. These, certainly can't be covered under the tags of QCD or nuclear physics.
(contd.) QFT tag, though correct, is like using 'Physics' tag - it hardly illuminates. it is weird that even chiPT isn't a tag. There have been a few ques relating to these. Please let me know if this is appropriate.
(contd.) The purpose is to save retagging effort if it is inappropriate.

Hadrodynamics is currently mentioned in these Phys.SE posts. As a general reference, please see related meta posts about new tags, e.g. here, here, and here.

Right! So, is that a point in my favor? :)
@Qmechanic - Right! So, is that a point in my favor? :)
Sorry for the duplication. David's answer here might be what you are referring to. Composites.
but I don't think I can do that with hadrodynamics, or can I?
because 'hadrons', 'chirality', and 'QFT,' and maybe 'Lagrangian-formalism' put together can't stand for a effective hadronic chiral Lagrangian.

@New_new_newbie : The tag system so far is certainly not perfect. With 37k+ posts, its getting harder by the day to maintain and correct. At 1k+ reputation you can create new tags, but be prepared that the community might synonymize/merge/change/remove your tags in the future.

@New_new_newbie Note that I usually (mis?)spell that as "hadrondynamics", so there is at least one more possible case than the ones Qmechanic linked to.
It's not a topic much considered by anyone other than nuclear physicists, but it is a legitimate candidate for a tag. Also, I agree that QFT is horribly general and that a more specific tag is often better (basically unless the question is about the structure of such theories instead of about a particular case).

@dmckee : Or perhaps it should be in two words: "hadron dynamics"? Naive Google hits: 11k , 9k, 3k.

Hello everyone!

HI.

dmckee, big fan of some of your posts, been reading so many of them
glad lads like yourself put so much time to share their knowledge.
Same for ACuriousMind, really interesting posts,
kudos to all of you.

2:28 PM
Why, um, thank you! Don't focus too much on any individual user though, there's quite a lot of invested people here.

Indeed,
Floris comes to mind too hehe
Are you currently taking your Masters? of course if you don't mind me asking.

I'm just in the process of completing my Bachelor, going to continue with a Master, though

What is your thesis about?

@dmckee - Hadrondynamics is logically right, though I've gone ahead with with your teacher (Walecka) phrased it as, in one of his papers - hadrodynamics.

I'm actually starting from this september (Masters, Condensed matter physics)

2:34 PM
@Phonon A review of two-dimensional gauge theories as discussed and solved by Witten and others

@dmckee - It has probably got to do with making it easier to spell, I mean why they don't generally call it hadrondynamics.

@New_new_newbie I guess it's because of the analogy to hydrodynamics

Ah right, cool, mine was a computer simulation on liquid crystals (iso-nem phases at coexistence)

@ACuriousMind - Well, I buy that. But all of us agree that hadrondynamics would be more logical, right?

Have no doubt yours will be a great piece of work, I mean honestly it is rather surprising how much you know already for a Bachelor student, I guess you've been into physics way before getting into higher studies, right?

2:37 PM
@dmckee Which raises a question - Can I edit the name now that hadrodynamics is already off the mark?

@New_new_newbie Yup. But if physicists always called things logically, we would not have such beauties as quarks and penguin diagrams ;)

hahaha indeed, well put ^^

@ACuriousMind - Valid point :)

@Phonon I always liked physics, but I didn't know much about the formal treatment until I started my studies. I've just devoured theory since, and the availability of accessible high level courses if fortunately very high in Heidelberg.
Incidentally, Condensed Matter is something I still plan to learn about, but haven't found the time

@Qmechanic - The two word part also makes a lot of sense. So, like I asked dmckee, any work-around NOW?

2:43 PM
@ACuriousMind keep up the good work mate, you have a bright future ahead of you, I am sure of it. Yeah I find specially soft matter physics extremely interesting, well mainly because I go crazy for entropic systems ;) Actually I didn't know about Heidelberg until very recently, I traveled there for a concert (given by the pianist Hélène Griamud), other than that I had only heard positive feedback on its univ.

@ACuriousMind - your expertise (from what I get by reading some of your answers) and the fact that you insist you are B tending to M, don't seem to commute though! I mean that's very very impressive indeed :)

@New_new_newbie his insights on whatever post he's replied to, have always been a fun and useful read, added to which he has a pretty solid english too.

@Phonon - Yup :)

When I joined this SE, I intended to use it precisely to try and sharpen my explanatory and English skills. That you think they are already quite good I will humbly accept ;)

@ACuriousMind :), do you already have some idea about the direction you will be taking for your masters?

2:54 PM
@Phonon The major you can choose for that here that fits me best is simply "theoretical physics", and I would love to do some more things with topological QFTs (but courses for that are quite rare here). Since they're offered next term, I'll definitely take some String Theory and Supersymmetry to see what all the fuzz is about. Don't know yet what else I'll do, though

@ACuriousMind yeah I understand, still sounds like a solid program, but haven't thought about doing your masters somewhere else?

I did, but I was slightly too tardy to be able to know ahead of time when exactly I'll finish my Bachelor to apply ahead of time to the places that would have interested me
So I'm gonna stay here, but I'll definitely go somewhere else for a PhD. Perhaps a semester abroad of the Master, too, depends on how it'll fit.

yeah, typical scenario in most places actually, quite sadly of course. Yeah sounds like a good idea, but be careful with the exchange programs between universities,
often very poor planning and mis-informing the students
So try to really find out about the "good" places suggested by your supervisors/teachers that know you well,
I took one semester abroad, in Liège (Belgium), it was horrible, the program had nothing to do with I had been doing thus far, and it wasn't even interesting. (a lot of eletronic instrumentation)

Well, that sucks. I'll take care to find out as much as possible before I make any decisions - but if the location/country is interesting, I could live with a semester that's not as focused or great as it could be elsewhere. I'm still young, after all :)

yes certainly ;)

3:06 PM
@New_new_newbie : Done.

3:19 PM
@ACuriousMind alright man, was fun talking you, looking forward to your next posts and to our next chat, gotta go now. Cheers

See you around :)

@ChrisWhite I saw that this morning and had to think for half a second if it was worth checking out. Then I got bored of thinking and just skipped it.
I saw this one, Space-Based Cosmic-Ray and Gamma-Ray Detectors: a Review, and thought it would be a nice review. Then I saw it was 86 pages and thought, "Oh noes." While I certainly haven't read it, it does look very nice.

@ChrisWhite : Inline-tag-edits seems to still bring the post to the top of the front page, so the purpose seems reduced to being a shorthand...that turns into a longhand when one realizes that one also wants to edit the main text and not just the tags.

@ChrisWhite Making your approach sound superior to others is really just finding the right "per unit X" to scale things by.
