Q: Can I ask a series of question?

T AbrahamI recently wanted to ask about a series of questions relating to pretty much the same topic. It was a pretty narrow topic, but I had too many questions to put in one major question. Therefore, I was thinking that I instead write something like this for each title: "Topic question 1" "Topic ques...

Q: Does the surface of austenitic steels have an especially "dynamic" phase somewhere between 100 and 200 Celsius?

rumtschoThere is lots of kitchen lore about pans. One popular concept are the "pores" of a steel pan surface, which are the reason why food sticks to the pan when it's not heated properly. I don't know much about material science, but I know that the "pores" are not real pores, but irregular gaps or ev...

CuriousOne commented that it is worth doing this experiment.
I am out of my university for holidays. Anybody who can do this? You need a scanning electron microscope.

Hey guys, anyone testing the android beta here ?

3:27 AM
@Cheeku, maybe @Gowtham can help you (If he's not busy). He's doing his major in material science

3:44 AM
And @Gowtham, you misinterpreted my last comment yesterday. I never meant to bring your eyesight into question. All I meant was that India was making huges strides in its space program and wanted your views as such, as to whether you'd choose ISRO over NASA, irrespective of your eyesight. I'm sorry if you took it in poor taste, although the winking smiley was a bit out of place.. :-)

3:56 AM
@KyleKanos It was but a friendly question, Kyle... darn, should've added a ":-)" at the end..

What question was friendly?

the "superfluous" one
:)
You testing the android beta, @KyleKanos ?

@Simha I've got the stack App solely for the hat
But I normally just use my internet browser

hello..

So, what purpose do they want to acheive with the new beta ?

4:05 AM
who wants to talk about time travel?

@Simha I honestly do not know what you're talking about. The app doesn't seem so beta to me

Okay, i'm a bit confused here. By "stack app" do you mean the "android stackexchange app" ?

Yes, that is what I mean

4:20 AM
So what's the "new android beta" here ?

I don't know what you mean by "android beta"

:-)
It's just an update right ?

Hmm
Looks like it's for future updates to the app on the phone
To make sure that there's compatibility between Android devices and the SE app so that a bad product isn't sent out

I'm not sure why they've written "beta for tabs" instead of just "portable devices"

5:23 AM
@KyleKanos Take a look at the main post on meta.se : http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/245731/help-us-test-the-stack-exchange-android-tablet-app?cb=1

It says "Help us test the Stack Exchange Android tablet app". Is it an specially for tablets, or for all portable devices ?

The major part of it is for tablets, yeah!
But there are new features even if you use the mobile app.
I basically use the app to read Hot Network questions when I'm waiting for a bus etc. Keeps the boredom in place

@TAbraham The time dilation principle says that if you go faster and faster, time actually speeds up "with respect to you". So, if you had enough energy to accelerate yourself to extremely high speeds (of the order of mllions of m/s), you'd find considerable time difference between what normal people experience and what you do. However, by that time, you'd have gained a lotta mass... so it becomes increasingly difficult to accelerate further..
@Cheeku You've tried it ?
What new features ?

5:40 AM
@Simha Nah! Just received the update invite. I'll download soon.
I think the broadcast happened this morning only!
Bug reports must be coming any time soon on Meta, or maybe feature requests...

@Cheeku Me too. let's just wait.. Anyways, I gtg ! Seeya later !

:D Seeya!

@Simha Hi! i agree with you when question is about stopping the train . What do you think will happen when its just a hit and go rather than train being stopped ? the impulse(or force) will be same i feel if we are considering a human in the way of the trains . also i did not take anything you said in poor taste and understood wat you meant :P definitely ISRO if i was going to be !

Hey guys anyone here need some help about choosing a major.
I'll post up anyway.

do you need help or are you asking anyone else needs help ?

I need help actually
So may I ask?

yes go on , i will try to answer !

11:04 AM
So well, I am an Indian 10th student who has deep love for Physics. Yet, the condition in my country is that you can only do Engineering or Medical Sciences. If you don't you are bound to well you know rest. And I can't take anything other then Engineering due to my parents forcing me. So any branch of Engineering that is very related with mordern Physics and well I want to go to some good space agency. Help is appreciated.
That Engineering this, will be understood a lot by a person of my country.

@d3dxcr I and @Cheeku are doing Engineering Physics at IITB. The program is called "Engineering" and you certainly can pick your courses so that you do engineering, however

I see

most of the people who come here come to study pure physics

Yeah/

and you cal also pick your courses to get pure physics stuff

11:06 AM
Well, I
I see.

i am from India too , and i recommend trying for dual degree programmes in IITs, NISER and few other institutions , though this would probably have stern rejection from your parents

Of course, it's not as pure phy intensive as something at IISc / IISER / etc

But didn't knew IIT offered something that great.
i see

You'll have a bunch of courses you don't like, and a bunch more you hate from the core of your existence

Oh.
That is sad.................. TT

11:07 AM
Still, overall I like the program

Wait wait... I won't have to draw engineering drawings right?

you will

Are you good at math?

in your first year

I am good at Maths/
But I can't draw a house or a square with scale

11:08 AM
plus the HOD just changed and the new one is very receptive to making the course structure more amenable to pure physics students
so that's good

Oh.

@d3dxcr that's not ED
ED is annoying, but you don't need any drawing skills
it's purely mechanical. You need to remember some geometry stuff

I see.
Anything else worth seeing into?

Unfortunately our first year is completely common, so you'll only have two (three now?) physics courses

Oh...

11:09 AM
Any other program that is labeled engineering but gives you physics? Not that I know of. @Cheeku?

if you are sure about your pursuit of physics then going for pure sciences is better i feel . though the career prospects may look dim to parents compared to say any engineering course , but still lots of prospects abroad i think

Note that the gestation period for physics is huge

Yeah. Actually I was thinking of applying for MIT.
Yeag
Hmm. I saw this IISt
this had a course called

bachelors -> Masters (perhaps skip to phd, many do that) -. phd -> at this point you start earning (not just breaking even) -> maybe postdoc -> asst prof -> ...

B.Tech. (PHYSICAL SCIENCES
I'm more interested in research rather then teaching.

11:12 AM
i myself was dearly interested in going for MSc physics , but couldnt clear JEE, was selected for an interview at NISER ( couldnt attend due to floods) and doing MS in Material science now . so if you have a strong will try to pursue MSc program or even a B.Sc program ,

I see.
Let's say I want to go to ISRO or NASA, what except aeuronautical Engineering I can have my eyes on?

@d3dxcr Usually they go hand in hand, researchers at universities do teaching on the side
but not always

computer science ,Electronics , mechanical engg students work at these places too :P so its pretty wide .

Oh
So the best option is either go with Engineering Physics or move abroad.

@d3dxcr from my limited knowledge, yes

11:16 AM
well you can always finish you bachelors/masters here and then move abroad with a good profile and probably less spending :P

of course yo ucan try to convince your parents. Or get convinced yourself :P

Lol.

A bachelor degree abroad is expensive and not much better

I see.

@ChrisWhite Quantum physicists advising hedge funds? O.o

11:18 AM
:O
What about Nuclear Engineering.

"You see, Bob, money is actually a relativistic scalar field"

@Gowtham Sorry for the late reply to that comment ! I'll chat tommorow, I'm a bit busy today.. :-)

@d3dxcr shrug

and why that?
Nvm.
Actually this thing I don't understand.
What is difference between Stack Exchange and Overflow :O??

and very very very tough mentally (from what i see at pennstate) , i did mine at NIT trichy (it was a walk through a park) , but ofc you would learn a lot more in abroad univs and even more practical teaching there . its way more hardwork .

11:21 AM
@d3dxcr SO is a programming Q&A site. SE is a network of such sites, of which SO is one site

Ahh
I'll have my eyes on IIST and Engineering Physics for now then.
Thanks

@d3dxcr nuclear engineering will basically narrow down your prospects in future, you may be interested now , but 2 or 3 years later you have no clue what you like then . so taking a broad subject is usually better , but if you are very sure then you can pursue that

Oh

@d3dxcr I suggest you ping Adithya Gungi if you can find him on Facebook and have a chat with him.
He might know more options

Oh okay.
But will he even add me?
lol found it in instant

11:24 AM
he probably won't, but he should see a message

I see.

Okay, one question before I go: Is there a "physics.se de-addiction for dummies" book too in the series?

@d3dxcr you can get into places like TIFR, IGCAR , DRDO or some other organization of DAE . but is that what you actually want to do ? if you see yourselves as a researcher then this probably isnt that best route . (my sister works in the PFBR project and dad worked at KKNPP) so i have a small idea .

I see,
Well I am a researcher by birth.
But interested in space at same time
and in mordern physics.

are you a 10th class student ?

11:29 AM
Yep
Found this:
the department is also starting two new dual degree programmes, namely, B.Tech-M.Tech. in Engineering Physics and M.Sc.-Ph.D. in Physics.

that's old

Really?
I saw if for the first ime.
time*

We've had a nanotech DD program in EP for years

Oh
@ManishEarth Which year are you in

3
not a DD
the DD program is very EP focused (less wiggle room for pure P)

11:33 AM
Oh
I see
g2g

@d3dxcr try to study the rest 2 years without giving much thought and see if you actually still want to pursue physics , you might get new interest within 2 years . ofc you will be preparing for JEE, and whatever entrance exams , If you are very strong-willed after 2 years , you can pursue BSc/MSc dual degree programs in Physics or just BSc program in univs as i have seen many people abroad who finish their bachelors/MSc here, but dont take this an a discouragement in anyway . bye

Q: Can a discoverer give the name he wants to his finding?

user46147Let's assume that some scientist discovers a phenomenon that has never been noticed before. He wants to write a paper about it but he doesn't want to constantly write "effect of change of some properties blahblahblah". Can he therefore name this effect with a name of his choice? For example "Di...

off topic?

@DavidZ yes, but maybe academia

@DavidZ Hard to say. His question is genuine, but not physics. Migrate to academia?
@ManishEarth I swear, did we just say the same thing? :P

lol

@d3dxcr Whenever you see this: I agree with what @ManishEarth and @Gowtham suggested. But if you're looking for international, I don't know anyone on the path I'm suggesting, but I'll say: Go to Soviet/Balkan: Poland/Belarus/Ukraine/Russia etc. They are the only ones whom I've found hard to defeat in international competitions such as olympiads and physics problem sets

@Cheeku Olympiad based stuff isn't as good as it sounds, I know some olympiad something-medalists who suck at physics.
But in general yeah

1:33 PM
But that may be too stupid as compared to sticking to Engineering Physics from IITB. Seriously, I know infi researchers in India. All agree to what @ManishEarth and @Gowtham have already told you

the Soviet/Balkan areas have good pysics
@Cheeku of course, you're still a first year student and haven't yet been exposed to the horrors we have in store for you
huehuehuehue

yeah being able to solve problems and actually conducting research shouldnt be related i feel ,

Still here :o

@ManishEarth I have a Soviet friend who built a nuclear reactor at 15-16 or so.

O.O

1:35 PM
I'll blow the surprises with a bomb... :P

@Cheeku yeah that happens too :p

@d3dxcr That nick! DirectX stuff na?

Lol

My point was that the olympiad problems don't quite reflect how good you will be at physics later on, or on the teaching abilities. Highly competitive exams usually only test how good your methods for cracking the exam are.

True

1:37 PM
But in general those countries do have a good higher ed scenario for physics

agree, i wish i cracked JEE :/

(Also, you should still try for the olympiad, it's fun)

@ManishEarth Yeah, but they are better markers than SAT, AP, JEE etc

maaaybe. Not sure

Gowtham was was your rank?
what*

1:38 PM
The only reason they might be better is that you have less time to "prepare" for them ergo you won't be doing too many exam-specific tricks

@d3dxcr That's like asking a girl her age dude. You don't! :P

Actually I do ask a girl her age :p

@ManishEarth There are no exam-specific tricks. :P Maybe your impression of olympiads is foiled by something or someone...:P

@d3dxcr i did not get a rank in JEE , i did not qualify

I see
But why is there no one else here?
Aside us that is

1:41 PM
i think they are not interested in joining thats all , and the only one active is probably editing and answering i think

I see

@d3dxcr They won't speak when they're not needed. Usually they are. We pretty much exhaust the Indian crowd I think...@ManishEarth Is that?

lol

@d3dxcr Are you asking why the other people in this room aren't interjecting stuff into the conversation?

Yeah well you can say that.
G2G. Study.

1:50 PM
Anybody interested in scientific history here

Given that there are many people from India here talking about education right now, how much competition is there in the system and what do you think of it? I'd be especially interested if you also had some experience with the systems of other countries

@alarge I've been twice to international olympiads, and have talked to other people about their systems, so I "may" be helpful
In India, competition in volume is large
But the best people we've produced were not the winners of what the mass calls "competition" in the system.
Which country are you from?

yeah , the population explosion that occurred in india basically made the system here really bad . There is not much flexibility, freedom relating to education.

Northern Europe. Lived several years in Asia, and saw many fitting the "Asian dad" meme mentality. I don't know that much about India, but (young) Indians seem to be talking about olympiads and other competitions all the time (something I'd never even heard about until well beyond the age)

I have been to Germany, France, USA , Holland. and find the systems there relatively better than the indian education system here.

1:55 PM
Why better? What do you consider a good education system?

I've just noticed that two things let you do good research: extreme poverty or extreme cold

a system where a student isnt under pressure to obtain specific marks to be classed as a good student. Most of the stuff here is too much of rote learning .

We have a system devised by British to produce industrial workers
And we're damn good at it. But nobody wants industrial workers anymore. :(

a place where student can choose what he wants to study rather than follow a group

What do the employers appreciate? What is the system like applying to companies anyway?

1:58 PM
@alarge Employers appreciate hardwork. That's all

What are the tuitions like in India?

@alarge Everywhere.

@Cheeku There are less. In many countries they teach according to some patterns.

hello

@Cheeku ?

1:58 PM
@ManishEarth What are less?

I am just curious, 3G phone antennas use sound or light to transmit data?

@Cheeku Exam-specific "tricks"
I'm being very vague with the word "tricks" here

@BenBeri Technically light. Radio waves.

@Cheeku So the employers equate hard work with high grades which basically means you then apply with your grades to companies? How much does the name of the university matter, or your major?

@BenBeri "light" aka electromagnetic waves

2:00 PM
@Cheeku So how does that light work through house walls, etc?

@alarge Big companies don't give a shiz about grades
@BenBeri wavelength too big...ignores walls, in layman terms

@alarge see here what i experienced in college is like this -> at end of third year recruiters come to the college . If the pay package is high then they recruit first . the first companies will have a very high cutoff CGPA and the last company will basically hire anyone in that order.

@alarge I am still a freshman. @ManishEarth IITB recruitment ways?

"IITB recruitment ways"? O.o

@ManishEarth Like procedure, CGPA ka importance etc...

2:02 PM
Does the name of the university enter the equation? Are the universities of "different levels"?

@Cheeku I don't know what you're asking me

@alarge Yes

@alarge the tuitions usually are for school/high school students i think. College/Univs dont have any tuitions .

@ManishEarth: alarge wants to know of how companies recruit in Indian institutions. How is it done in IITB?

@Gowtham Are all the universities state controlled?

2:03 PM
@alarge Not all. The good ones are.

yes @alarge First come the IITs , then IISc , then NITs , then private institutions , then state run colleges.

In general, there are some good private ones
@Gowtham IISERs dude...

So how do the private ones make money if there's no tuition?

@alarge Oh! you meant "fee", as we call it
What's your currency? I'll state it in that terms

euro

2:05 PM
i think the whole "recruitment process" only happens at the first 3 or 4 type of institutes mentioned, okay tuition in india usually means "extra-classes" . so yeah all institutions here do have classes if thats what you mean - and a related tuition fee

Ah, I meant like yearly fees

@alarge It is around 1200 euros for the year for my college( state run ), considered one of the best

So what are extra classes? How rigid is the curriculum?

sorry @Cheeku. I was just typing what came to my mind . i know of IISER , NISER etc

And could go on an average of 4000-5000 euros for private
@Gowtham Yeah, I understand
@alarge School students go to something known as "coaching"-kinda extra classes. Preparing for entrances to universities

2:06 PM
there are no extra classes for Post-school colleges - for Bachelors, Masters etc generally.

School curriculum, there are different boards. Your school has to follow the curriculum set by the board it is affliated to

Ok. I think I'm a bit confused by the terminology here

@alarge Probably. What part?

So when do you take extra classes? Is this to study for entrance exams?

@alarge Mostly. Weak students do it for school curriculum too. That's called "tution"

2:08 PM
well in india its school 1-12th and then Bachelors (a degree). and yes its for entrance exams to the colleges i mentioned above.

How about "extra classes", ones that you take on top of your curriculum just for fun (or whatever). Is this possible?

@alarge That's the problem. NO! :(

@Cheeku Why? How about if you pay extra?

You have to do that on your own. "Fun" part, on your own

Is there any type of open university?

2:10 PM
@alarge "open" as in?

nope. all the curriculum is fixed . there are very very few courses that we can study apart from the major called Electives here . but even they are forced/fixed and not actually free

well, anyone can take classes for a small fee, and those are usually recognized by universities.

@alarge Yes.
@Gowtham DU etc do that right?
@alarge They are not really the best ones.

@Cheeku you mean electives ?

Has there been any discussion recently about changing the system to be more relaxed?
How about in the context of MOOCs and whatnot

2:12 PM
@Gowtham No, anyone can take any course for a small fee. Well, it's still a degree
@alarge I've been the part of first batch to experience a MOOC :P
just this semester.

Cool, which one if I may ask?

@alarge CS101
It'll be live next year for whole world

@Cheeku i dont think it was the case when i was doing bachelors . but not really sure.

They tested the method on us. They were talking of expansion for everyone in the country soon enough.
@alarge But we have nptel.iitm.ac.in
Like OCW, can watch video lectures, no recognition
@Gowtham shrug

@alarge there have been lots and lots of "discussions", " committees" etc formed but as this country is run by corrupt politicians its hard to repair this system . Here in India the education is seen as business . but lots of changes have been happening steadily . hopefully in 10 years or more this could change .

2:15 PM
@Cheeku Oh, I hadn't seen that one before. With videos and all, looks good

but am really pessimistic about it :/

@alarge WHAT! On the link I gave
They already opened about 9-10 courses in MOOC fashion
"Certification exam:for a nominal fee"

Are everyone of the same age when they enter uni? I'm basically asking what happens if you fail an entry exam; Can you try again the following year?

yes
but there are limited tries i think for each exam ,also an age restriction

@alarge You can keep trying until you're 21 or so..Not sure of the mark

2:18 PM
How is the age restriction justified?

i dont have a single clue lol

No idea dude

Thanks all for the input. You can now switch to discussing the history of science (on that note, I just started reading Kuhn's book) ;)

which country you from @alarge

@ManishEarth Check out NPTEL dude! They rolled out MOOC courses. I got so excited I signed up for a Data Structures course.

2:23 PM
ooo
Wait, doesn't IITB's CDEEP go through NPTEL?

@ManishEarth There's an intersection. But some videos accessed via vod.iitb.ac.in are exclusive

But point of the new MOOC courses is that you can get a certification for a "nominal" fee
@ManishEarth Wear a hat dude! It's Christmas.. :P

Not much time to earn hats

@ManishEarth That's sad. I already got 4. Hope you're not jealous

2:31 PM
@Cheeku last year I was top of the hats list until the last day (then LoganM took over)
No need to be jealous this year :p

@Gowtham Finland, originally, why?

@ManishEarth: Hi!

o/ @KyleKanos

I'm leading Physics.SE in hats :)
You & Brandon aren't competing with me for hats

@alarge just interested. i was at Stuttgart for my project and visited few countries around . My friend actually went to Helsinki ! amazing place :)

2:40 PM
@KyleKanos Where's the list? Link?

@alarge You realize Finland's education system is considered best in world! :P

You're 83 on the list Cheeku

@KyleKanos WTF! 22? The second person doesn't match if you halve it

Haha
I'm competitive by nature

2:42 PM
Also, you're supposed to be good at astroph and fluid.

@Cheeku, PISA's (the study you're probably referring to) a lot of politics. What I most enjoyed was the immense freedom in the curriculum/pacing (especially in uni, but to a lesser extent earlier as well). Anyway, PISA measures the avg. 15 yr old, and that isn't a good predictor for... anything in my experience

And like Pokemon, gotta catch 'em all!

@KyleKanos yeah, too busy :/

@Cheeku I like to think I am good at it, but I know I'm not the best.

@KyleKanos I needed to discuss stuff regarding accretion disks.
Around black holes mainly! How much you know?

2:44 PM
I know the basics, maybe a little bit beyond that
I guess it depends on the aspect of it you're looking at

You aware of the problem of quasi periodic oscillation in X-ray emissions from compact object accretion disks?

I'm aware of it

I did a small project on it an year ago. Maybe I'll publish that this year.
But in any case, who and what universities are active on research in that direction?

@Cheeku I honestly don't know, but a search at SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System for quasi-periodic oscillation would probably give you the right direction.

@KyleKanos And what do you suggest for a good magneto hydrodynamic simulation program?

2:52 PM
Which are you more familiar with: Fortran 90/95 or C/C++?

C/C++

Then you've got Pluto (MHD + SR), Athena (MHD + SR), HARM (MHD + GR, 2d only), GRHydro-MHD (MHD + GR, Fortran-C hybrid)
Probably a few others, but the last 3 are publicly available. Pluto requires you to email them asking for it

Either I am getting bad at googling, or these were actually hard to find.
@KyleKanos Thanks a lot! I only knew of Athena

I'm aware of all 4 of them, despite my not being a C/C++ programmer!

user54412
4:02 PM
Did somebody say Athena? o.O

Not me
Definitely not

user54412
must have been my imagination then

Pluto's better than Athena anyway :D

user54412
gets ready to defend adviser's honor in combat

Only because there's AMR in Pluto

4:28 PM
AMR? I am very bad with abbreviations @KyleKanos

AMR = Adaptive Mesh Refinement

hey guys

imagine two trains of different length hitting a human who is standing on the track , will they both impart same force(impulse) ? assume same mass/coach and same speed

I would rather ask the question: If not, why?

4:34 PM
No, the larger train should hit with more force

i am thinking the length wont matter after a specific number(of coaches) as the rest of the coaches behind wont even feel it . explain considering this not being a simple collision between spheres

Consider the conservation of momentum

but we assume that all of the mass experiences the change in momentum in that right ? will the entire train feel the impact ?

@KyleKanos But it's not one body.

@Gowtham I'd argue that the train wouldn't feel anything at all
It's just too massive compared to the puny human
@Cheeku Debatable. The trains are coupled together

4:36 PM
Would the momentum of the backward coaches have any effect?
"The trains are coupled together" ?

Hmm, probably not an instantaneous effect

Maybe the human'd be too dead after a while.

There'd have to be propagation time for the "signal" of the collision to occur

We should totally do this. Anyone here has model trains?
Anyone getting them for Christmas

okay not "feel" , but the momentum changes though very small ,would they depend on the length of the train.

4:38 PM
It kinda seems to me that it's a tennis ball & brick wall versus tennis ball & plaster wall issue here

Wait a moment! @Gowtham I was about to sleep
Give me till morning. I will run a simulation
