@Howdy_McGee, yes, but you should read the summery of the editor chat. All ideas are good ideas.... You are so focused on not offending anyone you forget there is a discussion between humans and humans rarely fully agree with each other.
So I guess it ends up in a pretend of an open discussion while true decisions are being made backstage in a non transparent way, because it is rarely possible to have a decision about where to spend time or money and keep everybody happy, so you just avoid making even slightly controvertial decision in public

... and the worst side of it is that people that dare to criticize are just marked as "not nice people" and being ignored. For example it took matt to make the rest api people to stop bulshiting around, all the people that said before him that they luck true focus were just tagged as "not nice/productive" and ignored

Ok so I got an invitation to WP-Engine to work on a project and I have to say that I enjoy the experience so far. Have you all given them a test run?
Not sure about their plans though, seems pretty price.
I bet they have loads of restrictions on what types of plugins etc you can use.

Never tried, I don't like to be patronized by my host.

How do you mean?

What you just said and more. Restrictions on plugins, forced updates, prescribed workflows,...

Yes this is my concern.
Realised that working with tons of clients like this has given me FTP access to like 100 or more servers.
I am finally eligible to get into The Scene (piracy) and offer servers.

:)

1:41 PM
This is a joke if it's not too obvious.
But it is quite interesting to have access to all these paid plugins though.
@kraftner do you freelance or do full-time emp?

freelance

1:56 PM
Via outsourcing platforms or individually?

Individually. Like word of mouth and meeting real people in the real world ;)

Wow, do you manage to keep a constant flow of clients?
How are people in real life? (lol)

Seems to work fine :)
People are great (or not my clients for long)
But I don't do those small can you fix this can you change that kind of jobs. So when I have a client I'm busy for quite some time.

Ahh, 50% of my clients are the quick fixes ones, and the rest is bigger projects.
Maybe with this big source of payed plugins, I can be a code dealers in the corner. Like:
"U need any of those fluffy hooks and filters?"

For me bad experience with WPE. Restriction on plugins, custom MU plugins and wp-config stuff that you are forced to use. Also no shell access and pretty broken Git integration makes SFTP only viable "deploy strategy"... And recently a client want to leave them because they are going to change price policy (not sure how) and is going to become very expensive if you have a lot of users. There are some nice things like automatic staging environent, but I would not recommend them.

3:41 PM
No SSH? Why are we even talking about this any more...

IIRC they provide a web shell to use WP-CLI. What do you want more? ^^

3:56 PM
I recently got told "We have a web shell and a browser file uploader both over https" when I was complaining to a host that they don't have a secure way to upload files and work with the server. Only FTP. No FTPS or SFTP. Only FTP...

migrated a friend off WP Engine while back, their backups didn't have WP uploads included in them or something like that (what). and I don't think they allow backup plugins which is major deal breaker for me, never ever trust someone else with primary backups.

4:15 PM
Which brings me to the question, how do you make a consistent DB backup that scales and doesn't require the complete site to be in maintenance mode?

A master/slave setup where the slave is temporarily disconnected, backed up and afterwards reconnected?

4:45 PM
For all of you hating on Breadcrumbs yesterday. They're actually used by Google in determining site structure. Check out Google's search results. They append breadcrumb structure to URL in results. Important part of site structure and SERP. So eat it.

@kraftner This is typically something that I want to be organized by the hosting provider.

For sure. I wouldn't even know how to do that. Just read it here thats how uberspace does it: wiki.uberspace.de/system:backup#datenbanken

5:22 PM
it is not as hard to do, you but this is big league stuff

WPE interferes with your WordPress installation on many levels. Forced plugins, broken multisite and so on. You can never deploy what you have tested.

@MichaelEcklund, if you read this page developers.google.com/search/docs/data-types/breadcrumbs, there are at least two other formats google support to get the breadcrumbs info without cluttering the site design
WPE is shared hosting?.isn't it enough to make it a non option?

no

so when will you recommend it?

Shared hosting doesn't mean it's bad.
But what WPE does is.

5:35 PM
Shared hosting means you do not control the enviroment
I guess it is not important for a blog type site, but other type of sites? If I had a shop I would want total control

It's not "clutter". It's a form of navigation. Which, in my opinion, is necessary for any website.

But also means you don't need to control the environment. For the small sites I build I really like shared hosting.

yes, for small I agree, siteground are actually good, but WPE is expensive shared hosting

LOL @MichaelEcklund, yes you probably had not worked much with sites that every link has to be justified by the money it generates, or with a complex design that do not leave any place for it

5:40 PM
@MarkKaplun You probably have never agreed with a single thing I've ever said.
Scroll back. You disagree with everything.
It's $a = new Year( 2017 ); Try to not be such a downer about everything.

lol, downer is my second name ;)
I should send you a transcript of how I say to my clients that thier ideas suck

go for it. info@michaelbrentecklund.com

.... then they go to their quiet place to rethink things and end up with a better idea
As I said here or elsewere in the past, negative input is important input. It is the responsibility of the person recieving it (including me) to learn from it instead of just think "that person is not nice" and there is always something to learn from negative input even if you end up in the same position where you started
and core commiters as always supply a great example how to not treat negative input core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/16778#comment:90

So explain to me why a multi-billion dollar company like Amazon uses breadcrumbs?
and not only do they use them, but they're wayyyyyyyy above "the fold".

5:55 PM
@MarkKaplun back off, at this point you two are just pointlessly fighting

because amazon has an hierarchy and it helps the user navigate. Most sites don't realy have an hirarchy that is worth to navigate to, for example the wordpress category page... it is just an unorgenized and unstructured content
no user will want to read it

You speak for all users?

yes and no. I know what annoys me at site design and assume that since I have been around a little I got some grasp of what is just annoying for me personaly and what just doesn't work. And I also use a lot of sites and no popular site except for amazon has breadcrumbs, or they are so hidden you will not notice them. Even the google developers doc I pointed you to do not have a breadcrumbs I could locate
obviously this might be related to the site I use, but the point is that it is not a "must"
this site for example do not have them
cnbc.com do not have them
sky news do not have them, and I will stop here
