actually surprised that wpengine didn't go for compiling wordpress into executable (cgi ?) till now.
they shoe nice improvment but I wonder how much improvement do you get over using APC and object caching, After all it is not a surprice that when you embed the PHP core into a webserver you get faster execution of PHP based pages
and the whole point of HHVM for facebook was to enable faster code distribution to servers, something that I assume most wpengine clients don't care about.

php source code is much smaller then executable
this is why they didn't want to continue compiling their PHP

you mean as a change from hip hop? well, yeah, but as far as I remember HHVM is faster than hip hop by now

will see when it gets stable :) I am not keen on HHVM anyway... everyone using still saying it crashes a lot, etc
case in point — WP Engine thing which has to keep PHP fallback around for when HHVM takes a nap

Ugh, the language in that WPEngine blog post. "Apply for consideration" to determine whether you're worthy enough to get onto a hosting stack that just about brings WPEngine up to date. I don't think so

Yeah, I would have hoped for a bit more humility and less of the "your site is too small for us to bother with" attitude. Oh well, they remain on the "Do not use" list
