2:01 PM
test

2:42 PM
connected

hello

yay it works
so build-essential is already installed

not on the Toshiba
I'm currently using a working Ubuntu 12.04 on Asus

ah ok

2:43 PM
and I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my new Toshiba qosmio x870
where I can't gain access to LAN and WIFI

ok understood
so remove build-essential with apt-get remove build-essential
then issue the last command again with --print-uris

from the working pc?

you should get links to the packages

or the Toshiba?

hmm first try apt-get install --print-uris build-essential from the thoshiba
i'm a curious ;)
but in fact in should be easier for you to do it from the ASUS, because you'll need to download those files to the USB stick

2:48 PM
I guess it works there
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install --print-uris build-essential
Reading package lists... Done

The following extra packages will be installed:
dpkg-dev fakeroot g++ g++-4.6 libalgorithm-diff-perl

The following NEW packages will be installed:

Yes !
Now click all the links
download the files
put them in a folder

done and copied to the USB.

cool , now plug it in the thoshiba
cd to the folder
then issue dpkg -i *
(sudo)

as in sudo dpkg -i *?

yes or *.deb
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

2:54 PM
done! ended with Setting up build-essential (11.5ubuntu2) ...

perfect !
now, you can follow the remaining instructions
returning in PENDRIVE/compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc
./scripts/driver-select alx

make

sudo make install
I am crossing fingers

./scripts/driver-select: Permission denied
and using sudo: sudo: ./scripts/driver-select: command not found

ok , remove compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc folder
then do this as user, not sudo :
tar -x compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc.tar.bz2

cd compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc
i'm going to download the archive too, for the test

tar -x compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc.tar.bz2 is waiting like forever :) The white blinking cursor is stationary
pls test

ahhhh
I see. there is another error in what I have reported in my answer
do this :
tar -xvf compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc.tar.bz2
(it wasn't extracting anything ! )

3:01 PM
better now
let me proceed
extracted
bash: ./scripts/driver-select: Permission denied

ll ./scripts/driver-select
it works on my box

bash: ./scripts/driver-select: Permission denied

are you in compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc folder ??

yes

so type `
ll ./scripts/driver-select`
ll ./scripts/driver-select
there should be a permission problem

3:05 PM
exactly
same error

martin@martin-VirtualBox:~/compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc$ ll ./scripts/driver-select
-rwxr-xr-x 1 martin martin 11736 2012-07-04 03:19 ./scripts/driver-select*
here is what i get

ll?

yes it is the same as 'ls -l'

oooh that gives
-rw-r--r-- 1 ubuntu......

ok.... this is because of the thumb drive I think

3:07 PM
should I copy it from the thumb drive to the Ubuntu home directory?

no , better :
move the archive .bz2 to the home of the ubuntu user
then uncompress it again

ok

files under scripts/ folder should have executable bit ON (x)

ok that worked
Procesing nbewe driver-select request ...
Backing up Makefile: Makefile.bk
Backup exists: Makefile.bk
etc

now : make

3:11 PM
done with no error

and finally sudo make install

got an error
here's the whole session
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc$ ./scripts/driver-select alx

yes this is because you are running a live cd

hmmmn :) so should I go ahead and install? :D

no no

3:16 PM
ok

let me see
do this
sudo modprobe alx

FATAL: Module alx not found

ok he as not installed the module yet

I guess so

cd ./drivers/net/ethernet/atheros/alx/
sudo insmod alx.ko
I think it wont work
but still, try it ^^

3:21 PM
cd ./drivers/net/ethernet/atheros/alx/ or cd /drivers/net/ethernet/atheros/alx/

first one

insmod: error inserting 'alx.ko': -1 Unknown symbol in module

same thing. it's because it is not the only file the system needs to load the driver
ok go ahead if you can, install the distro
it should work anyway
It is because of the live filesystem
the install script is not written for that particular case

I see :) crossing my fingers :) as I install. Thanks a lot.

these network interfaces are a pain

3:26 PM
yeah. I was thinking of installing wicd?
from the Live USB

oh wicd wont work until the driver is installed

to see if it would work. Disabling current NetworkManager
oh ok
thanks

wicd is only an interface

ok. Ubuntu installing
this will take a while. Thanks Martins. I have learnt a lot today. :D Hopefully it works after the distro is installed

it's the problem with very new laptops
there are constantly releasing new network interfaces with absolutly no compat with the existing drivers
it's really a shame ;)

3:29 PM
Exactly :) really a shame.

in the past it there was ne2000 driver, that worked with pretty all the cards

Ooops I have another issue: It didnt detect the Windows 8 on the pc

errr
oh no I forgot about these UEFI issues

I heard that last week
UEFI before disabling Secure Boot

I think your windows 8 boots in UEFI mode

3:37 PM
Yes it does. That's what the Toshiba guys said

did you have grub displaying at startup ?

which startup?

oh sorry installed finished ?

when I booted from USB?
I quit installation
since it didnt detect windows 8

ha. ok !
good :)

3:40 PM
and the other option was to delete all files on pc :D

soooooo !
eheh

which isnt an option :)

to make ubuntu to detect windows 8 ... ubuntu should boot in UEFI mode
and it seems this is not the case

so the new question is how to boot Ubuntu in UEFI mode

3:42 PM

"Installing Ubuntu in EFI mode"
everything is here !

Oh I have used that initially
that was the beginning of my journey with Secure Booting
the secure-remix didnt work
as initially I couldn't even access the Ubuntu Live USB
but after disabling Secure Boot, I was able to access the Live USB

in UEFI mode ?
(step 3)

Install Ubuntu from the Live CD/DVD or Live USB in the usual manner, then reboot the PC. ??

yes, but only if you have booted ubuntu CD as UEFI
look at "Identifying if the computer boots the CD in EFI mode"

3:48 PM
exactly

there is a screenshot

ok

what do you see when you bootup on the cd ?

This is possible only if you have already installed Ubuntu on the HDD
I see: Try Ubuntu, Install Ubuntu

so the first screenshot

3:50 PM
yes

so... it should work :/

:) yeah but didnt detect any OS

you don't have the "something else" option in the installer ?

It's there
but I'm wondering if after say I partition the hdd if it would affect Windows 8

you have install ubuntu along side ?

3:53 PM
yes I would love to install along side
but that option isn't there
just 2 options

ah ok
so it doesn't see the efi partition

exactly
I wish you were here lol :)
I've been on this for 2 weeks

so I don't know, I think we miss something :/
I have to leave

Thanks a lot Martin.

but I'm 99% the atheros driver will work once installed

3:56 PM
Deeply appreciate your effort

no problem
see you around !

Thanks :) see you.
