@DVK-on-Ahch-To You're the highest rep person I see :) Before I join in here, just wondering what's good and bad about this community? Seems interesting at first glance, but wondering if you have any insight about why it's so small after being around for so long.
anyone else can answer too!

@K-C I'm not sure it's a good idea to ask just one person (and/or to pick that one person merely based on rep points :) I would recommend asking on meta instead to get a balanced broad perspective; though that has a risk of being closed as subjective or too broad
@K-C my personal view is that the good is, the site has enough experts to provide very interesting and useful information on both practical and theoretical aspects of politics/political science; and there are enough people dedicated to the idea that it is more weighed towards informativeness as opposed to opinionatedness.
The bad is, there's TOO much interest/emphasis on politics and debates vs. theoretical political science (when I joined; i was via Libertarian.SE Area 51 proposal that was far more theoretical/philosophical in nature)
Additionally, there's some people who vote purely on political bias (good content gets DVs and crap content undeseeved UVs). It's not overwhelming to the point of making the site unusable or even bad, but still unfortunate. I tend to notice that more from left wing, due to my own biases; but I'm sure it applies on both sides.
Another good is, at large scale; the site (and even its chat room) is incredibly nice and non-confrontatinal compared to what one might expect out of "politics forum" :) There's its share of contentiousness (and i'm as guilty of that as anyone) but it's mostly all quite polite and as much as possible, on substance.
Compared to uncivil (putting it mildly) political "discourse" in other SE chatrooms, this is a breath of fresh air.

@DVK-on-Ahch-To This is one of the problems I have with "voting" on the internet as a whole
Just because you think someone is wrong, doesn't mean the person isn't contributing to the discussion
I think systems that allow only upvotes (and no downvotes) might be a lot better
OTOH, you need some way to filter out the trolls and such :-/ SE does a good job with strict moderation, but many sites don't...
I agree with what DVK said, btw, with one addition: there's a large wind of "Americanism" on the site, and it would be nice to see more international politics, too.

@Carpetsmoker Oh yes, I forgot that point but I wholeheartedly agree. The site is WAY too American centric in content.

Okay thanks for the perspective! I'll probably stick around. Seems like the negatives will be easy to ignore.
