I would like to know if my great grandfather served in the military. Would this site or history.stackexchange.com be better?

@William By all means post here we have many questions and answers like yours. Just be sure not to mention his name initially if he was born less than 100 years ago - see our privacy policy at genealogy.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic

@William it's much more common than people think to find more than one individual with the same name, so have a little caution. Even with a 'fairly unique' name, look for other details such as place of origin and whatever else you know about him to separate him from sound-alikes.
When we see genealogy on TV, the professionals have already done the laborious background work to sort out same-name people. Of all the shows I've watched, the same-name problem has only been discussed once, on J. K. Rowling's episode of Who Do You Think You Are, where they were also sorting out the military records of one of her ancestors.
