Find My Past announces a project to release the 1939 Register online:
"The 1939 register was taken on 29 September 1939 by the British Government, shortly after the outbreak of WW2. It recorded personal details of individuals in order to issue identity cards and ration books, and later formed the basis of the National Health Service’s records."
The 1931 Census was destroyed, and no census was taken in 1941 because of the war, so the Register is the 'census substitute' to fill in those lost years. FMP is predicting it will be released in the next two years.
