@Sue Thanks for the heads-up. There was no need to upvote because the post will be deleted as soon as I figure this mess out, and votes on deleted posts don't count toward your rep.
Upvoting a downvoted post is called a sympathy upvote and can be a problem because you're voting on the post score, not on the post content. Ask yourself would you upvote if it hadn't already had a downvote?
It also helps to keep bad content on the site longer because posts with a score < 0 become eligible for deletion.
Also, moderators have a single-click "convert to edit" function for when people leave answers with extra information instead of editing the question, so if you see this type of thing in the future, you don't need to edit the question yourself. Just flag with an explanation like "should be edited into the question" and I can take care of it. Less work for all of us!

@NiallC. Thanks for taking care of this and for the education. I should have remembered that about the delete thing. That's interesting too about the edit part. I always appreciate learning from you. Sorry if I caused you guys extra work!

@Sue Actually, the most work was figuring out what to do with the comments. "convert to edit" doesn't bring them along, so I had to think for a bit before I remembered I could move them to chat.
