I'm at a bit of a loose end. I've finished my degree.

Yeah. Some sort of celebration seems to be in order but my friends on the course still have exams for other modules and my housemates are all but one going to Majorca today = =

So Final Fantasy XIII is the current plan. It's taken me three years to get around to it.

Anyway, how have you been? It's been a while

Been good... fighting with a TI preamp for the last few weeks. The stupid thing starts spewing errors when you shift it into low-power mode.

Also playing around with a "hard disk layout simulation" program, written with pyqt

(I'm trying to get sector/SID numbers to work right now)

So you're a hardware guy? I had assumed firmware for some reason. Or perhaps more all-round?

I'm firmware... but I work in a division called "drive side"

Basically, we work on three different pieces of specialized hardware

The preamp, which is actually located on the spindle arm inside the disk... and actually controls the magnetic signal.

The channel, which is arguably the core function of the control chip... it marshalls and transforms the data from binary data to something that can be stored on magnetic media (and back again)

And then we have an internal custom processor that controls most of the core timing elements. I wrote our custom compiler for that. (the newest version anyways)

I'm not one of the integration guys... they actually work mostly with hardware, and not so much with the control software

Ah okay. Pretty interesting to hear how it all comes together

It's kinda a neat process

I'm in a lecture-ey mood right now, since I'm writing a talk for tommorow to give to new hires

I like the sound of more project-driven CS work... I need to start looking for a job soon but for my own sanity I need to find something as dissimilar as possible to University work

Eh... just don't get sucked into one of those uni-startup collaboration hellholes, and you're fine

I dunno... I've never had trouble finding interesting work, although I did have a stint where I did the grad student thing

Meh... I was haflways through a Master's in CS before I got serious about it

Ironically... that happened while I was living in Japan, was using Linux/KDE on my laptop, and was annoyed that they were dropping the Japanese/English dictionary from the educational package

Yeah... started working on it, saw some genuinely good API design in Qt (first good one I had seen), and started learning about library design and compiler limitations

Got a job at IBM in the Linux Tech Center, working on the math libraries

That was fun... but Drepper is every bit the #*@hole he has the reputation for being

Left there, picked up a job doing ground control software for some instruments that are up on the ISS

Then there was a major hardware bug, and I ended up rewriting the flight system as well

(all of this time, I'm theoretically a grad student)

Finally decided to finish that up, did a horrid job of a thesis, but it was good enough for what I now saw as a third rate college program, basically because a friend told me I should come work for Hitachi :)

Wow. I fear you may fall into the category of people that operate on a whole different plane of thought to me (and other mortals), in CS terms

I guess I'd look at my textbook when I was in school, or JLPT book since, and copy out

One of these days, I should probably attack a JLPT book

But now I have some time I could get around to the 2nd half of RTK

My favourite JLPT book is called アタック, incidentally

How would that work with all the dependencies?

That would actually be the game... it's a simple mapping problem

I can't help but think that Heisig would advise against it. But that's not to say it can't work of course

I'm suspicious that you actually COULD reorder RTK to work with a normal "grade school kanji' learning method, with only a few outliers

But I'd like to play around with this first, see what it looks like

I see all sorts of copies of RTK floating around the inter-verse... but no one has a decent OCR copy

(I own all three books, so I don't feel guilty about snagging pdfs of them)

Well, yes, but he seems to have a problem with those who do it "for the sake of it" more than anything else

In my head I kind of equate it to the average westerner in Japan's feeling about so-called baka-gaijin

That's the definite potential flaw or weakness in my understanding - I don't know nearly enough about the time period

"mental picture=current state of perception" might be better

@Flaw You're translation of "これ" is not appropriate. A not necessarily natural but somewhat literal translation: "Regarding this fact, I think it is appropriate to think that it is due to the 'semantic features' of the verb '知る' and the image (= the way we perceive) that we have against '知る'.
