Hm, I've noticed that when listening to Japanese, for some reason understanding the numbers is often the hardest part for me.
Like, even if I can hear and identify the words, it takes some time to construct the number in my head.
I wonder if this is because numbers often come without context. Like, usually even if you didn't understand every word in a sentence, you can still make a reasonable guess about its message. But numbers require more attention.
But yeah, I probably need to come up with some number exercises for myself...

@kuchitsu Numbers are tough (I am still having some problem with them even in English) because they're abstract and you need to reconstruct them in your head. As usual only training will be of any help. If you are so good at numbers in your native language that's because you hear tons of numbers every day. You can also remember that in some context, you don't need to get the exact number but getting an approximation may be enough.

I guess I'll try reading most of the numbers I encounter in Japanese. Practicing every day should eventually have some effect, I hope.

@kuchitsu I find that if you hear/say numbers in certain context you'll find them in the same range. For example, in terms of salary, they'll all stay in the same 100 of 万 range (as in 100万~999万), and when you go out of the this range you know it's a huge number. Another one could be ages which stay in the 0-100 range, what I'm trying to say is sometimes the context may help in limiting what possible number you're hear/will say :)
@kuchitsu I often get the super high numbers off because I try to translate back to my own currency (in order to understand how much it really is) as well as figure out what the number is in non-万 format....(how many 0's is that??)

The top problem with numbers is dates and correctly hearing percentages maybe

Yeah, the context can still help... Like when I confused 15歳 with 50歳 and immediately noticed that something seemed off. :D
The 000 vs 万 thing seems very tricky to get used to.
And people say dates so fast, that's the biggest problem for me hehe.

Somebody, recommended me to listen to stock exchange report to be exposed to lots of numbers.
Being able to understand long sequence of number was useful when they gave back our exams we where called by our student id, and, I cannot remember a harder task than being sure that I heard mine correctly since the TA was enumerating numbers so fast

@永劫回帰 that's such a good idea, i think i would die though from listening to so many numbers lol
@kuchitsu try watching some news programs? they always state the date when things happen. I've been watching サンデージャポン (not exactly news) lately and there's always lots of dates that pop out there

6:52 PM
What are some good news programs I can listen/watch on the internet? I've been meaning to look into that for a while actually.
Currently I'm only listening to Bilingual News from iTunes, that one is pretty fun.

I really like variety shows esp. the ones where マツコ・デラックス appears in
月曜からよふかしとか、マツコ会議とか
but that's just me :P

9:41 PM
Thanks, I'll try these. Just needed some basic suggestions to start with. :)
