わかりません・・・
プリキュアには「キュアホワイト」と「キュアブラック」という主人公がでてくるらしい・・

6:06 AM
@oals Yeah, I guess it's one of those cases where word-for-word translation doesn't work. One (or only) way to cope is to look past the words of the phrase and translate the intention/sentiment behind them, which in this case ends up with something like "Don't be unreasonable."

Ah yes, you're right. That's what they are called apparently. :)

10:12 AM
@broccoliforest Apparently, the all-Russian Russian language forum was a sister site of a Russian forum which became ru.stackoverflow.com. So it was an existing community that was "imported".
I want to know Russian; it would be very useful for my studies (mathematics), but it also looks like it's going to take a lot of time to learn...
Can you read Russian?

@Earthliŋ そうだったんですか
@Earthliŋ Cyrillic yes, Russian... no
but I'm learning Polish now
slowly...

12:04 PM
Looks like Russian Russian stackexchange is mainly used by Russians or people that know the language really well.

was it a major forum in Russia before becoming SE?

@Earthliŋ We got a second question from our ALL CAPITAL friend: japanese.stackexchange.com/q/33866/1478

I deleted it rather than closing it.

No idea, I've never heard of it before.

4:22 PM
@chocolate I've never heard of it before, so I'm not sure. If you made me guess anyway, I'd pronounce it /heɪz/, not /heis/ (explanation here)

Anonymous
The Longman Pronunciation Dictionary lists:

Anonymous
> Haigh (placename) /heɪ/

Anonymous
> Haigh (family name) /heɪg/

Anonymous
So it could be /heɪgz/ instead!

Let's find an Australian and ask them :-)

4:25 PM
How many people actually understand stuff like /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /ʒ/? :\ I have no idea how they sound.

Anonymous
@kuchitsu It's becoming more common! I'll explain.

I wish people answered qeustions about pronunciation with actual sound clips.

Anonymous
ʃ is the English "sh" sound.

Anonymous
tʃ is the English "ch" sound. It's actually a combination of the "t" sound and "sh" sounds, which is why it's written that way.

@kuchitsu English has that, maybe Russian doesn't

4:26 PM
Ah, so pretty much all native English speakers are familiar with these?

Anonymous
I agree sound clips would be very useful, although Stack Exchange doesn't have a built-in way to handle them :-(

Anonymous
@kuchitsu Oh, definitely not. Most native speakers of English don't learn much about language in the first place. It's becoming more common for British English speakers to learn IPA, though. American English speakers are still usually unfamiliar with them.

In Russian we don't have stuff like that, the pronunciation is pretty much always clear from just seeing the word I think.

Anonymous
IPA is used in dictionaries for native speakers of British English these days.

Anonymous
American English dictionaries still use unreliable sound respelling systems.

Anonymous
4:28 PM
But it really all began with English taught as a foreign language, and dictionaries for learners. Learners are the ones who need IPA transcriptions most of the time.

I see. Now that I think about it, I think I've seen some of these symbols in school. But noone ever explained them to me. :P

Anonymous
But the IPA is very useful. It gives us an easy way to talk about the difference between the English and Japanese "sh" sounds, for example.

I'll have to learn this stuff I guess.

Anonymous
Of course, IPA isn't perfect, and it doesn't give us a complete description, but it's a useful tool you can use as part of an explanation :-)

Anonymous
@kuchitsu If you like! :-) Don't worry about learning every symbol. Try to learn the ones that you need as you go along.

4:31 PM
@kuchitsu oh, what I meant was the sounds you listed don't exist in Russian

I've heard that in Korean the symbols kind of reflect the pronunciation.

/ʃ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /ʒ/
you mean hangul?

Anonymous
Yeah! It's a little bit more complicated than that because Korean has changed over time, but it's a very nice writing system :-)

Yeah hangul.
I don't know any other writing systems like that.

Anonymous
In linguistics, we can talk about shallow orthographies and deep orthographies.

4:33 PM
yes it's very carefully designed one

Anonymous
English has a "deep" orthography, while Spanish has a "shallow" orthography.

one of Hangul's advantage is that it can delimit sound and syllable at the same time

@chocolate I stole your question:

Q: How is "Haigh's" pronounced in "Haigh's Chocolates"?

snailboatHow is Haigh's pronounced here? I looked up Haigh in the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary, and I found two entries: Haigh (placename) /heɪ/ Haigh (family name) /heɪg/ So based on this, it seems like Haigh's could be either /heɪz/ or /heɪgz/, but I'm not sure. It seems to be an Aus...

wow these bilbies are funny :)

oh I didn't read to that part :)
bilby = バンディクート huh
I only know them through a video game title

Ah. So I knew about them from that game too then.

Q: Embed an audio player

kiamlalunoQuestions about the pronunciation of a word as heard are probably common for a site for people learning a language. GoBustoI recently got stuck trying to discern whether a person in a video1 was saying 湯, 言う, or something else. Q: Can an embedded audio player be added to Audio.SE and Music.SE?

Tom WijsmanOn the Audio and Music Meta, people are requesting the ability to embed audio into posts, this would be useful for the asker to let us hear audio he is having a problem with and good for us to easily give examples. Q: How important is it to have an EQ pedal in your chain?

aliensurferI have a Digitech Bad Monkey, which in my experience, is a very transparent pedal. I use it to mainly to boost my volumes during solos etc. But I've spoken to a few people, read at a few places that an EQ pedal is very handy and should be a part of one's rig. What...

@kuchitsu Do you have "HTTPS Everywhere" installed?

Or alternatively, are you clicking a url with https:// rather than http:// in it?

HTTPS isn't supported on the meta sites yet.

Oh thanks. Works if I remove the "s" from the address.
