@broccoliforest I don't think it would help, because it wouldn't remove the association in people's minds of "man" with the masculine

also, given that "were-" is still generative solely for the names of fantastic creatures, I think people would be confused by a werefire, a werepolice, a werechair, let alone a werehouse

@broccoliforest OED has "were" as a word in itself, now obsolete; "were-" and "wer-" with the meanings like "werewolf", and a few specific combinations (werewolf, wergild), but that's all

notably the masculine equivalent of mermaid is merman, not merwer or werefish
