Hmm. I know you can say 「ご謙遜を…」, which I guess is short for 「ご謙遜をなさって」, but can you say 「お世辞を…」 (which I guess would be 「お世辞を言って」 maybe)?

So I guess the question is if ありがとうございます originally behaved like this, or this is some reanalysis / new functionality.
私は感動をありがとう seem weird to me, what do you think? 私は感動がありがたい on the other hand seems OK gramatically.

Yeah, I don't think ありがとう has a subject really, it's more of an interjection or something. Just like "Thanks" in English.

Though amusingly, it still has interesting agreement rules (fossilized no doubt): ×おありがとうございます vs おはようございます、おめでとうございます, etc.
I guess those also sound weird with subjects: あなたはおはようございます。
I wonder if these うございます forms survived in-tact because they were injections, or they became interjections because people stopped grammatically understanding them?

「あなたは日本語がお上手ですね」も似たようなものか・・・
お早い/お早うがそうさせるのか、執事やメイドが主人に言う様子を想像してしまい、「あなたは」に違和感があったみたいです
