I was asking a native speaker about the 北海度はどちらですか？ sentence in here, and they said something like 通じるは通じるけどわかりにくい and 「の」のほうがいい, approximately.

While I'm obviously not debating that that construction is used (given how well-read l'electeur is), I'm curious how common it is.

@DariusJahandarie You do not have to trust me. I am only an internet stranger. Just listen to this NHK announcer who uses the 「は」 we are talking about. Go straight to about 0:43, please. Why would it be used by NHK announcers, of all J-speakers, if that were わかりにくい? I found this video in no time because I KNOW that NHK, along with other TV stations, use 「は」but not 「の」 nearly everytime they broadcast from a place outside of its headquaters. youtube.com/watch?v=4tRyX23il0Y

@DariusJahandarie この種の「は」は強意の「は」ですから、通常の「の」にさらりと置きかわるような文脈では、あまり使われません。通常の「の」には強意の効果がないためです。この種の「は‌​」＝「の中でも」と考えてみるとよいかもしれません。「中でも」は「多くのものの中で特に」「とりわけ」という意味（出典：大辞林）で、強意のニュアンスがあります。「東京‌​は神田」（＝「東京の中でも神田」）と言うと、神田という場所を際立たせる効果があります。ですから、この種の「は」は何かを紹介するとき等によく用いられます。この「は」‌​を疑問文で使う用法は、最近はあまり使われていない印象です。ですが、意味は通じます。私の個人的印象としては、この種の疑問文は「昭和」という感じがします。今の元号は「‌​平成」で、ひとつ前が「昭和」です。ひと昔前の表現という感じです。悪い意味ではありません。「北海道はどちらですか？」等の疑問文は、昭和の[趣]{おもむき}を含んだ表‌​現に聞こえる、という意味です。ということを、英語で説明できなくて、すみません。

@snailboat I wonder if the English word "onomatopoeia" includes 擬態語. If not, it's a good idea to create "sound-symbolic words(音象徴語)" tag, I think. The distinction between "native words (大和言葉)" and "Sino-Japanese words (漢語)" might be difficult in hybrid words such as 重箱読み and 湯桶読み. Tagging with both can be a solution, though. @l'électeur Ah, definitely, thanks for the link. I know that that は is used in general, especially in the way it's used in that video, but was in particular curious about how often it's used in interrogative sentences. 私もseasoned speakerになりたいのでその表現についていろいろ調べていたところ、疑問に思った次第です。挑戦的な態度で失礼いたしました。
