It amuses me to see all the upvotes for your transitivity tag change, AFTER you made it

Every time I hear 新入生 my brain really wants to hear 侵入生

@jkerian I think I know why!

Anonymous
I think meta was basically not on anyone's mind, so no one saw it

Anonymous
But after I posted the answer, the question got to +3 which put it on the front page in the "hot meta posts" section!

Anonymous
So maybe we should posts when our meta is kind of ghost towny, just so they show up on the front page

Anonymous
I bet most people had no idea I'd posted on meta :-)

On the other hand, when there's already a link to meta (in any form) on the front page, my feeling is that people follow that link and then click around a little bit, so they're more likely to see stuff

Anonymous
I think our community does care about meta! But I think there's an "out of sight, out of mind" thing going on where people aren't actively thinking about it very often

I really wish there were a more convenient way to see meta posts
I always forget to check
Meta sites are great but the current implementation does very little to encourage participation

Anonymous
Yeah, I agree with you

Anonymous
It's kind of hidden unless there's at least one featured/hot meta post link on the front page

Anonymous
What do you think about my idea of featuring things more often?

ssb
I tend to notice when things are featured, so I'd say go for it
I really wish there were just a feed of recent meta posts
at the very least

Q: Which radical name should I study for the kanken?

KanjiHimeI love learning kanji, so I thought about taking the kanken (probably level 6). So I started to look for information here and there, and it seems I'll have to learn radical names. I'm totally fine with that, but my problem is: which name to learn ? Let's take 乙 for example: should I learn 乙部{おつぶ...

I hate 漢検's policy to have radical or stroke order in their test of lower grades, but as a second thought, they're perhaps trying to absorb Japanese learner
@snailboat traditionally, 夏's bottom is 夊 while 冬's cap is 夂, so it's just recent abnormal weather :D
@DariusJahandarie I updated my answer too, hoping it's understandable in English this time...

@broccoliforest Personally, I'd never say something like "I'm raising a pet hamster"

Anonymous
I think I would normally just say have, actually

8:56 AM
@snailboat oh, do you mean this one?
飼育 for "having pet" is perfectly OK. It's not "raising" (if I believe my E-J dictionary tells me that "raise" is only used for livestock) here. — broccoli forest Jan 16 at 17:59
thank you for second opinion, for I don't have any intuition
virmaior says he can raise hamsters, though
maybe some dialects?

Anonymous
9:27 AM
Well, I think you can raise hamsters, . . .

Anonymous
It's just not the word I'd use to describe keeping hamsters as pets

Anonymous
Like, um, maybe if you had a hamster farm? :-)

Anonymous
I can't really nail down the difference in semantics

Anonymous
But I don't really think it's the same thing

so, am I guessing correct that "raising" animals is aiming for raise them big, but not keep them for long time?

Anonymous
9:31 AM
Hmm, that could be

Anonymous
@broccoliforest But yeah, maybe it varies from dialect to dialect, or idiolect to idiolect

then, probably I get it
dialects can be very confusing even to native speakers... especially when they are subtle

Anonymous
Yeah, and it's not uncommon for native speakers to disagree on the difference between nuances in similar words

3:00 PM
At least in my English, we often call what children do relative to their pets "raising"
Maybe less so with adults
Btw, I just passed the N1 ... not a score I'm especially proud of, but passing is passing
高度人材ビサ here I come
Though my wife agrees with @snailboat ... she says she would only use "raising" in the context of "raising a guide dog for six months and then we had to give it away"
My wife also says "had" ...
Apparently, my use is idiolectic ...

3:38 PM
Though my wife is from California which is where I think snailboat is ...

ssb
3:54 PM
@virmaior Do you know what the requirements for that sort of thing are?

The 高度人材 visa?

ssb
Yeah I just found that site.. can't find where it says how many points you need, though

ssb
Oh man, I think I just barely hit 70 points
I wonder if I can get 10 more points for having both N1 and a degree in Japanese

I'm pretty sure no based on the XLS form
Also, you might not be eligible as a JET
(assuming that's what you currently do for work)

ssb
4:06 PM
I do, but.. why would that disqualify me?

which category of highly-skilled professional would being a JET be?
They might not accept that as "高度学術研究活動
本邦の公私の機関との契約に基づいて行う研究,研究の指導又は教育をする活動"
and it might cause administrative problems for them

They rejected me a year ago because they didn't accept work experience done while simultaneously earning a degree
and they only use 1 database to search for publications
or rather I had to 取り下げる from applying

ssb
Looking back through it I might have made a mistake, maybe I don't get up to 70 regardless
I do computer science though
working on my masters

But do you do computer science for work in Japan?
Part of why they didn't count my work experience was that I'm teaching at a university now and my work experience is as a programmer
they also refused to count any courses taught while pursuing my PhD as work experience

ssb
I don't... yet
obviously I'm only entertaining fantasy here

4:11 PM
Yeah, I'm not trying to be the parade of negativity on this one
it was just 非常に面倒くさい because all of this was done while I was out at AEON with a phone call that began "is your wife with you?" / Me: Who is this? / Him: "immigration" and then devolved into 40 minutes of arguing about whether you can do two things at once. Per him, 常識 says you can only have one 在籍... Per me, that's a load of BS
I needed either the N1 or one more publication showing up to get the points I needed

ssb
I wonder if 漢字検定 counts as a Japanese work-related qualification
if I get some kind of qualification here I can bump up to 70 just by being young and able to speak Japanese

probably no. The list is really short and focused as far as I could tell on accounting
Attorney in most states in the US or actuarial things mostly

ssb
that's for the foreign qualifications, though
In technical activities, it lists Japanese qualifications
but doesn't say which

hmmm... weird
I think they're making up the rules as they go along
so if you get lucky with your examiner, that would work

ssb
well I'll certainly apply when my time comes nearer
the worst that'll happen is they'll say no, I suppose
then I can fall back on getting married and being a NEET house husband B-)

4:20 PM
haha
sounds like a good plan

ssb
Japan needs me for gems like this

ssb
4:44 PM
Anyway as long as I can find a job after JET I'll be happy regardless of visa status
