Well, I went ahead and posted my サビシサ question as an actual question... because I still don't get it. If it was a later 文献 then I wouldn't even question it because for whatever reason people just stopped writing down 清濁... but I really thought it was preserved in thw 万葉集

@Choko
。。 I take it its slang then. Where can one lookup more on slang?

I have, in all seriousness, exactly zero idea what is wrong enough with my latest question to deserve a downvote :-\ what are you supposed to do with stuff like that? I've seen others leave comments asking for an explanation, and even done so myself... but it does seems pretty futile, given that downvoters are not notified of new comments

linky?
nvm, @rintaun I see two upvotes...

@AustinFrench there are 3 upvotes and 1 downvote

I have found sometimes people are over, um rule following and lose the spirit of the law for the letter of it. I believe "How to read" questions are off topic but your obviously show research and well conceived question. I do wish more people more consistently left comments on downvotes across SE though...
Regardless, you still have a net gain so I wouldn't worry about it, personally @rintaun

oh I don't care one tiny little but about the reputation. it's just that the downvote implies, to me, that there is something wrong with my question. and I don't want there to be something wrong with my question.

I don't think there is, and even 1/3 suggests its a good question to me. If the trend continues and you keep getting downvotes leave a comment, but one downvote doesn't suggest a problem with two upvotes... At least to me based on my experience on other sites on SE.

3:08 AM
yeah, I get what you're saying, but it still bugs me :P
also, I'm pretty sure that "how to read" questions are not off topic, just for the record

I was thinking this, from the FAQ:
Direct translations are off topic. While we are very interested in helping people who are having difficulty in their study of Japanese, we are not willing to provide a translation service for cases where a simple dictionary search combined with understanding the basics of Japanese sentence construction would suffice.
Not that that is what yours is, just what I was thinking of.

ah yeah that's definitely off topic, but pretty different.

Agreed, still newish here and wasn't really sure though. I have seen many people ask "How do you read this" and its simple stuff and downvoted/ closed sort of the mental note I sort of the mental note I sort of the mental note I sort of the mental note I sort of the mental note I and that was sort of the mental note I had made I guess.

fair enough. generally speaking, if it is not a translation request, and it is actually about the japanese language, then it should be on topic

Agreed...
Any clue on a good reference on using だから vs そのため?

3:22 AM
@AustinFrench ?

I assume you mean だから at the beginning of a sentence, if you're comparing it to そのため?

はい

in any case @AustinFrench, to quote a very smart person, "Isn't that one of those things we put on our Q&A site? :-)"

If only I could find such a place ;)

@AustinFrench この俗語辞典 search.zokugo-dict.com/…

3:25 AM
yeah, that wonderful, mysterious land where you can ask questions to a large group of generally pretty helpful people and only get downvoted, even when you are perfect, only 25% of the time!
ok, that makes me sound way more bitter than I actually am lol

@Choko 。。 0です。
I am not sure that made sense,

@AustinFrench Probably the 劇 is like extreme(ly), カワ is short for かわいい, コーデ is short for コーディネート(coordinate) This page might help ytv.co.jp/announce/kotoba/back/3101-3200/3166.html See ことばの話3168「激似」

*ごめんなさい

@rintaun When I get a downvote, I think like...
Oh someone hates me!
sometimes...

@Choko I know, right!? that's how I feel too =(
and I know I shouldn't...

3:31 AM
haha

but I do anyway =/

@Choko

I found a big problem with my question... 夫 IS normally a 万葉仮名 for ブ. =/ so that's awkward
anyway, fixed
my real question was about サビシサ anyway
I wish I had a PDF version of 時代別国語大辞典 上代編

@snailboat ....I'm not sure if I have a problem, or if I have stumbled upon something amazing and am like, a genius or something, regarding to my hypothesis about the formation of
I was working on a hypothesis that ほし【欲】 and はし【愛】 come from the 四段型助動詞フ, when I came across a familiar transformation...
essentially, SOMETIMES, when you put フ onto the 未然形 of a verb, the ア行 becomes オ行... sound familiar?
and we're talking about in 上代, so it would actually be らふ, which rules out ら+う → ろう elision
am I just crazy? or am I actually thinking about real things?

Not terrifically relevant to our site, as we haven't really put a lower limit on Japanese knowledge to participate, but interesting nonetheless.

so I'm looking for papers that might help me answer my question about サビシサ, and I come across one... and it turns out it's by my professor's dad? this has happened before, only it was my professor's daughter last time. man, that family is certainly active in the study of old japanese O_o
