5:10 AM
We need to clean up the dictionary list

Anonymous
Is it really useful listing 5 different interfaces to EDICT and friends?

Anonymous
I mean, it's not like they're all different dictionaries.

Anonymous
If we're going to list places you can access a given dictionary, why not structure it so we can list all the places you can use 大辞林 and 大辞泉 too? And so on

6:15 AM
@snailboat I think so, it should just be clear that is what they are, like all categorized under an EDICT bullet.
Looking at your edit, I see that's exactly what you did.

Anonymous
I was thinking of reorganizing the list so it's based on accessible dictionaries, and interfaces to those dictionaries are listed underneath

I fully agree with that. I was about to suggest it.

Anonymous
The list feels like a bit of a mess at the moment

Honestly I think the biggest improvement to a lot of these FAQs is literally just to make them shorter. (Less prose, mainly.)
I feel bad just going through and deleting what other people have written like some sort of maniac though.
The lack of "ownership" of these things is kind of a problem IMO.

6:30 AM
@snailboat I've argued for trimming them down... but everyone seems to have their favorite EDICT skin :/

Anonymous
@jkerian Well, if anyone ever tries to add romajidesu I'm vetoing it.

is tempted to add it
I dunno... the dictionary part doesn't look any worse than average

Anonymous
But the guy who runs romajidesu was posting spam answers here.

ahh

Anonymous
I don't know. Even the name . . . does "romajidesu" sound like a good dictionary? :-)

6:34 AM
It should obviously be romajidegozaimasu. How rude.

Anonymous
They edited EDICT. They added useful entries like these: romajidesu.com/dictionary/meaning-of-romajidesu.html

romajidayo とかさ

Anonymous
"This is Roman character"

@snailboat What is wrong with some people...

ローマ字って「羅馬字」なんだ・・へえ

6:37 AM
どう見ても当て字なんだけどw

A nice and easy-to-use online Japanese dictionary だって!自画自賛?

多分自己紹介では作者が"A nice and easy-to-use person"を言うんだろうね。

え、ローマ、Rome って、羅馬なんだ?へえ

Anonymous
Sometimes people write "roumaji" in romaji

Anonymous
I always thought that looked weird since it's not usually ろうまじ

Anonymous
6:41 AM

僕も
一本眉かわいいなぁ(笑)

Anonymous
Unibrows are sassy

sassyがsnailboatさんの辞書にあるとは思わなかった…w

Anonymous
The snailboat 辞書 contains many words

Anonymous
Including but not limited to sassy

Anonymous
6:47 AM
I've actually been drilling Japanese vocabulary and it's making my brain hurt :-)

Anonymous
I learned a まゆ word recently! まゆずみ! Except I learned it as a name

眉墨?

Anonymous
The name was spelled 黛

え、黛?なんじゃこりゃ

Anonymous
There are a lot of kanji I ended up learning from names before I ever learned the actual word. Like, I haven't actually learned the word まゆずみ, only the name...

Anonymous
6:49 AM
I learned the kanji 辻 because of a name before I learned the word :-)

Anonymous
I like that kanji. It's easy to remember

Anonymous
It has two dots in this font... but in my other font it only has one dot

Anonymous
辶 辶

Anonymous
Is it supposed to have one or two?

今日、一時間「下町ロケット」という本を読んでたんだけど…「読んでた

その件は一時間だった。w

Anonymous
Did they at least give furigana for みなぎる? :-)

うん。名前も。
「上擦った」も。

Anonymous
I think 漲る is a difficult kanji

難しい漢字が多いな・・・
@snailboat 辶 辶
両方一つに見える・・・私のPC画面では

6:55 AM
まあ、僕には単純な漢字でも分からないけどw

Anonymous
@Choko Oh! On my computer the left one has two dots, and the right one has one dot

おお!ズーム500%

I get them by converting しんにょう → 辶 or 辶

僕の画面でもsnailboatと同じだ。

6:57 AM
I think I added the radicals to my input method dictionary some years ago

Anonymous
てへん → 扌!

おお!

Anonymous
Because I was typing them a lot in my notes for kanji

Anonymous
I know the names of the common ones but not the rare ones

Anonymous

Maybe his hair is one giant unibrow?

ああ、遅くなってきたな。おやすみ。

@DariusJahandarie おやすみ!

@snailboat that comic is completely illogical

Anonymous
7:10 AM
@jkerian It's on the front page of Tae Kim's guide

I know... and it's totally retarded

Anonymous
I agree with you, by the way :-)

If you don't actually know the word... spelling it in a less familiar script is not magically going to make you know the word

Anonymous
I agree that it's illogical, I mean. I don't usually say retarded myself

Anonymous
That word is not in snailboat's 辞書, apparently

Anonymous
7:14 AM
I guess a 類語辞典 is a type of 辞典

Anonymous
But I think in English a thesaurus is not a dictionary

In this case... the word fits particularly well.

Anonymous
So is a 類語辞典 a thesaurus?

@snailboat They fill the same role...?

Anonymous
They can go under the Dictionaries section of the resource list, anyway :-)

7:15 AM
oh... yeah... definetely
The issue with the dictionaries section is that you can split it up in a few ways.

Anonymous
I'm going to work on a new way of organizing it in a file on my computer and I'll share it here when I'm done

「そなたの日本語もなかなかいいです」の「そなた」は

Anonymous
Ohh... I don't know

Anonymous
I went through old posts that had been deleted . . . I undeleted some of them

Anonymous
Not that one though

Anonymous
7:23 AM
I undeleted posts by a certain user who deleted their account, but had previously deleted highly voted answers

おもしろいから、そのままにしておこう・・・

Anonymous
Hehehe

Anonymous
Well, most people can't see that one . . . :-)

Anonymous
It probably isn't causing any harm

Anonymous
7:28 AM
I undeleted that because it was voted up to +10

7:45 AM
そうですね。。。さわさんの回答が、質問の意図(というか状況)には、一番良いと思います

8:16 AM
Oh, interesting, Excite has 研究社 新和英中辞典 第4版

Anonymous
But I have the 5th edition on paper

Anonymous
I thought that online dictionaries would mostly be up-to-date

Anonymous
I don't know why I assumed that :-)

Anonymous
135,000 words versus 187,000 words

Anonymous
I used to have the 4th edition on paper but I spilled something on it and ruined it T_T

Anonymous
8:18 AM
But it's okay, I don't use it much anyway :-)

Anonymous
Yahoo! / Kotobank, Goo, Excite

Anonymous
Weblio

Anonymous
8:33 AM

We're linking to a Windows version from 1997?

17年くらい前ですかね・・

Anonymous
We have a link to that in our resources list :-)

8:36 AM

三省堂 WebDictionary?

Anonymous
It doesn't appear to be 大辞林

Anonymous
Oh, it's the デイリーコンサイス国語辞典!

8:51 AM
Hi!

Anonymous
Hello! :-)

9:03 AM
How are you?
It has been a long time since I've been in here

9:19 AM
そうですね、おひさしぶりです

9:29 AM
:)

Anonymous
10:11 AM
@Shazer2 Almost a year! Welcome back! :-)

Anonymous
How's Japanese going?

Anonymous
@jkerian It looks like two of those EDICT interfaces don't update their copies of the files and are way out of date

@snai
@snailboat I haven't been studying it! I've started university and have been preoccupied with that :(

Anonymous
10:28 AM
@DariusJahandarie @jkerian (Sorry, I used meta as a post-it note!) This is what I came up with when I tried to streamline and reorganize the dictionary list: meta.japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/1297/…

Anonymous
Maybe "Paper Dictionaries" could be a separate answer

Anonymous
There, I split out paper dictionaries

Anonymous
I didn't put in my new version of the online dictionary list because I don't know if it's an improvement streamlining it, but @DariusJahandarie you thought it might be a good idea so I tried :-)

11:39 AM
@snailboat They have to leave some space for their paid products, is all

11:50 AM
@snailboat Where's your favorite, 明鏡?
Or in fact, any monolingual dictionary?

Anonymous
@3to5businessdays I didn't touch the paper dictionaries section, I just cut+pasted it into a new answer

Anonymous
I figured I'd work on it another day

@snailboat Most JMDict interfaces are out of date

Anonymous
@3to5businessdays I don't know why that would be the case―it's been easy to update since, what, the 90s?

Anonymous
But I'm not going to keep any out-of-date EDICT interfaces in the list

Anonymous
11:56 AM
So that leaves Jisho, Tangorin, and WWWJDIC

old Jisho is out of date, so is Tangorin
so are a lot of mobile apps かねない

What does "ナ@ナ@" mean? I saw it at brain.riken.jp/labs/ngs/index.html

Anonymous
12:13 PM
@3to5businessdays That's kind of sad

Anonymous
I searched for a term that wasn't quite that recent

Anonymous
So that leaves Jisho and WWWJDIC

Also, I think Kotobank broke their search engine a little after the update
Beta Jisho is my go to though
It can gloss and de-conjugate

Anonymous
I'm not actually super fond of Kotobank

@snailboat I'm slowly moving to goo
Too much crap on Kotobank

Anonymous
12:17 PM
Excite has a simple interface to 大辞林 and Goo has a simple interface to 大辞泉

Weblio has 大辞林 too

Anonymous
I liked the interface on Yahoo! a little better back when they hosted both

Anonymous
I miss Yahoo! 辞書 :-(

Anonymous
@3to5businessdays Weblio is really nice in terms of the amount of stuff it has

Anonymous
But as far as I can tell it doesn't have an easy way to search a specific dictionary

12:18 PM
Yeah

Anonymous
And the interface isn't always perfect, depending on what you want to do

They also have a useful 実用活語 dictionary or something
実用日本語表現辞典

Anonymous
I don't really use any of the EDICT-based sites at the moment

which contains an entry on 明後日の方向
@snailboat because you have a badass 電子辞書

12:38 PM
@snailboat ship it!

where to?

meta かな?

Anonymous
@Choko I streamlined the dictionary list! meta.japanese.stackexchange.com/a/761/1478

Anonymous
@3to5businessdays Yikes!

Jeez, I just read that fugu is prepared while they are still alive

Anonymous

3:48 PM
Was confused for a second there by 男がおので警官2人を切りつけた
I was like, is it "男がお" + "ので" = due to having a man's face
hahaha

Anonymous
@3to5businessdays You'd have an easier time if they just wrote 斧! :-)

そうでしょう
Is that not in 常用漢字?

Anonymous
It is not

Anonymous
It feels basic to me, maybe because it's graphically simple

Anonymous
Maybe because I play too many video games :-)

Anonymous
3:52 PM
Although I haven't really played much in the way of video games this year

Anonymous
I was playing a detective game on DS a month or two ago

It has 8 strokes - so easy to write

Anonymous
Yeah, and both halves are really easy kanji :-)

Then on the same article you have 襲撃 -_-

Anonymous
襲撃! I think that's "easier" than 斧 (meaning it's more common) even though it's harder to write

3:56 PM
@snailboat Looks good to me!
Sometimes I wish we had the ability to make tables.

CommonMark might make that happen

* blush *

Whoa, inappropriate much?
Anyway, let's talk about pain

Anonymous
@3to5businessdays Haha, I'm sorry! I'll remove my much inappropriate comment :-)

Oh, we can give sleep-deprived boat a break.

Anonymous
3:59 PM
I need more caffeine.

食パン is pain de mie?

I would think the obvious thing you need more of is sleep.

In Wikipedia, those two are linked together
Seems like it's plain ol' loaf o' bread though

I think they refer to the same thing, but 食パン can probably be used more generally as well

Anonymous
@3to5businessdays Yeah a plain loaf, like normal bread shape

Anonymous
