@PatLudwig Good luck with your game. What are you playing (for when you get back)?

2:11 PM
@Rainbolt Last night was Arkham Horror. One of the weirder sessions ever for us. Only two gates opened in the first six turns, and we couldn't get to them due to the repeated monster surges so it was a very slow moving game. Over five hours. It ended correctly though. The GOO eventually showed up and ate us.

2:36 PM
I've never played. Admittedly I haven't learned many new board games thanks to Magic

@Rainbolt I escaped my MtG phase 15 years ago. I miss it some, but the opportunity to play many other games instead is rewarding as well
Unfortunately storing those many games is way more problematic than a few card boxes and some binders :-/

3:16 PM
@PatLudwig You know those boxes that reams of printer paper come in at the Office Supply store? My roommate and I filled up six of them with monocolored cards and land. We are now on our second set of six, and we have two more for artifacts and multicoloreds. Grand total of 14 printer paper boxes, plus the binders for tradable rares, plus the binders for the not for trade rares, plus ten or so deck boxes for our standard, modern, legacy, EDH decks.
Not to mention we draft twice a week and we only sort maybe once a month, so they make piles until we get to them. Between the two of us, that makes 12 packs per week incoming. We don't take prizing ever.
Haven't paid for a draft since December of 2013. Our store credit hovers steadily around $300 dollars.
It's quite a problem. On the other hand, our only board game is Settlers of Catan. Very easy to put on the shelf lol.

3:31 PM
@Rainbolt Lol, before my collection got quite that large I opened a game store to sell the extras
It's pretty cool that y'all can keep playing without inputting much $$ Good job

We spend still, but on tournaments rather than FNM. And we support our local game store too. They have a GoFundMe page and are trying to move into a larger store.
I just donated (a small amount)
My roommate teaches and he runs the game club at the high school. I'll be a L1 judge in a week's time. I wish I could run a game store like you but I kind of like how much my cubicle job pays lol
I have to get certified so that the store can run IQs (or whatever they are called these days)
(PIQs?)
Didja know that because you own a store that sells Magic cards that you are a certified rules advisor?

@Rainbolt 15 years ago was when I moved away from the store to follow my cubicle job dreams. I'm only a (mostly) silent partner now.

Oh, I see. What do you do now?

@Rainbolt No, but I have little to do with it these days. I was an L2 judge, well on my way to L3 in 2000
@Rainbolt I manage the Operations team at Digital Motorworks. Which most people have never heard of, but everyone uses. We handle 80%+ of all car data in the US.
15 years of Magic releases that I've barely seen have left me almost Magic illiterate. I'm continually amazed that WotC is able to keep putting out interesting sets and rule additions that keep the game rolling on.

I'd be more impressed by rules subtractions that leave the game functionally intact. You may have heard the proverb by Douglas McIlroy, "The real hero of programming is the one who writes negative code."
The rules are written very programmatically. There's a turn queue and a stack. When the stack is empty, the turn queue churns forward. But there's a ton of redundancy and complexity that doesn't need to be there.

3:48 PM
@Rainbolt Definitely. My favorite checkins are knowing that I added significant documentation while reducing the total lines of code at the same time. It doesn't happen often enough
@Rainbolt I wish more board game rulesets went through an audit by a decent programmer though.

By checkins, you mean you are a developer?

@Rainbolt I was. I still like to lead by example when I can

Q: Why was my answer deleted?

murgatroid99I posted this answer (2K only) yesterday, along with this answer. It's not a great answer; the community does not even seem to think it's a very good answer, but it is a valid answer to the question. The moderator who deleted the question said @murgatroid99 - SE is not a platform for polls. ...
