Q: How does one interested in converting to Orthodox Judaism connect with an Orthodox community and find a conversion Rabbi?

SarahI know that one needs to be in an Orthodox community in order to be immersed in the culture, practice and devotion of Jewish life. How does one connect with such a community? Does one find a conversion Rabbi first and move to his community? Or does one find a community and then approach their ...

@Sarah Come to Teaneck, Ir HaKodesh!
Teaneck /ˈtiːnɛk/ is a township in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States, and a suburb in the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 39,776, reflecting an increase of 516 (+1.3%) from the 39,260 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,435 (+3.8%) from the 37,825 counted in the 1990 Census. As of 2010 it was the second-most populous among the 70 municipalities in Bergen County, behind Hackensack, which had a population of 43,010. Teaneck was created on February 19, 1895 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions...
(As for a conversion Rabbi, I don't have any suggestions.)

@ephraimhelfgot Why Teaneck when she could go to Israel?
IAE it's probably best to reach out to whatever Orthodox rabbi, or even Jew, you know best, to get their recommendation of whom to contact next.

@DoubleAA You're right- but if she was going to Israel, she really wouldn't have to ask in the first place.

I am proud to announce that SE have recently deputized me. I would like to thank all spam-bots, trolls, and missionaries for granting me this thankless opportunity.

@ephraimhelfgot I had emailed Rabbi Goldin at Ahavath Torah in Englewood. I have not heard back yet. I was not sure if that was even ok to do; which is why I asked. @DoubleAA I wondered about volunteering in Israel and making connections there to progress toward conversion: nbn.org.il/aliyahpedia/education-ulpan/higher-education/…

@ephraimhelfgot ...Thanks for the invite. I might just see you there. I heard a conversion rabbi on you tube recommend not going to Israel to go through conversion because it is more difficult, slower, with more chance of delays. He recommended going through conversion here and then asking Israel to recognize the conversion. I am not opposed to going to Israel though and am not sure delays in the timeline or the process of actually being received would deter me.
...so long as I could be immersed in Jewish culture, language, devotion, sanctity of life, and contribute positively to her society. I think I would feel secure if they delayed the actual conversion if they saw reasons for concern. It seems I would just be more prepared and confident when all was said and done.
@DoubleAA Ok, thanks; I was not sure if it would be insulting to a conservative rabbi for me to ask for reference to an Orthodox rabbi.

@DoubleAA I would need to find a way of supporting myself there. Are there jobs over there for non-Hebrew speaking people. It seems I would need to know Hebrew to effectively perform jobs I would qualify for here in the states.
I might not be practically feasible for me to go there just yet.

@Sarah Indeed you seem to be getting a bit ahead of yourself. Training to be a practicing Jew is no simple task. Start small and continue growing. I doubt you should be considering moving across the Atlantic yet, though I don't you personally. You should find someone who can mentor you through this process with personally tailored advice. We online here are not suited to do that.

@DoubleAA You seem davka like the perfect mentor.

@ephraimhelfgot I don't see how you could know that. A good high school teacher, for instance, doesn't necessarily make a good preschool teacher or a good graduate school teacher. How do you know what my experience in education is?

Q: What's the difference between [alef-beit] and [aleph-bet-letters]?

MithrandirIs there a difference between these two tags, or was alef-beit just created because it's an alternate spelling and someone didn't see aleph-bet-letters? BTW, hebrew-alphabet is a synonym of aleph-bet-letters.

I'm "NVZ" across the SE network, but when I visited Mi Yodeya, my name appears to be "a25bedc5-3d09-41b8-82fb-ea6c353d75ae", which I'm also unable to change. If any moderator is reading this, please change my name to NVZ on this site, too. Case solved. I'm deleting this now.

@Sarah to go in Israel may cause a mixture of many different problems. The better is to stay in your land and contact people with a maximum of culture accointance with you. In Israel you have 1000 issues, sionism, sepharadic-ashkenaz, nationality, etc. not good at all to begin and for mental health. to convert is not easy and to make this slowly is good.

Just came across mit.edu/~jcb/tact.html for the first time. An interesting read.

@msh210 corollary: when dealing with someone whose filter you haven't yet gauged (e.g. on the Internet), apply both filters for caution's sake.
This model maps to the left-right axis of the DiSC model

Excellent podcasts about different communication behavior patterns and how to navigate them: manager-tools.com/map-universe/communication-disc
Bottom line for many of these as well as the tact filter hypothesis is that to properly implement "ואהבת לרעך כמוך", you have to get a sense of what your רע would like. This is not just a matter of being nice and pious, but also is very helpful in getting what you want out of communicating.

@kouty It would be overwhelming! A little at a time sounds wise. I have a Conservative cantor in our town who is willing to guide me through the Conservative conversion studies. That would require the least life upheaval and seems to be the open door before me. Could that possibly be a step in the right direction for me...without overwhelming me?
