@msh210 Um... what is that?

Bever?

3 hours later…
11:11 AM
@msh210 I'm missing the reference

3 hours later…
1:43 PM
@Scimonster @Eagel @Daniel Mishenichnas otter marbin b'simcha!
("Otter" needs an American pronunciation, and "Adar" an Ashkenazic mispronunciation, for that to work.)

@msh210 Ahh I like it! If I had been viewing the chatroom from my PC rather than my mobile device and could have seen which message that was a reply to, I would have got it

2:22 PM
@Daniel In the new mobile chat Web site, you can. Just tap the arrow that indicates it's a reply, and the message it's a reply to will highlight in yellow. (Very pale yellow relative to its color anyway. And that arrow is small. But, hey, better than nothing.)

@msh210 I don't see an arrow on my phone. The CSS might not be available for all types of phones yet

3:02 PM
@Daniel I guess not. I'm using Opera Mini on an iPhone (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 9_2_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/601.1.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) OPiOS/12.1.1.98980 Mobile/13D15 Safari/9537.53).

3:25 PM
@Daniel are you using the new mobile chat interface? You have to opt into it. (Unfortunately I can't use it yet; they made the fonts too small and non-zoomable.)

3:41 PM
@MonicaCellio how do I opt in?

@Daniel go to your chat profile, prefs tab, and click the box for "use new mobile UI".

@MonicaCellio got it
how on earth is anybody supposed to find that?
I don't think I've ever intentionally visited my chat profile before
@MonicaCellio cool. This is from mobile

3:58 PM
@Daniel it's a beta feature right now; I assume they'll do more to make it prominent later. Or not; it might be one of those things that just passes by word of mouth. :-) I only knew about it because of the MSE post announcing it.
@Daniel yes, being able to reply to messages from a phone is a huge win! Enough so that, before they did this, somebody wrote an app (ChatSEy), which is what I use when I need to talk rather than just read on my phone.

@MonicaCellio I have that app as well, but I gave up on using it

Anyone else getting a notification bar saying
> Unable to load liveQuery from sechat.quickmediasolutions.com.
?

And for anybody who wants to support my plea for better visual accessibility: meta.stackexchange.com/q/273752/162102

@IsaacMoses nope

@Daniel it doesn't work with the new chat UI. Or maybe it does, but it inherits the style.
@IsaacMoses not I. Where are you seeing that?

4:02 PM
@Daniel @MonicaCellio Thanks. I think it's because I installed the "Chat status" userscript. I've now tossed it.

@IsaacMoses I don't know that script. What does it do? (Or did it do, before the answer was "produce that error"?)

@MonicaCellio It tells you if other people who are also using the script, who are in the room with you, are typing, or something like that. I got no benefit from it, because no one else here was using it.

@IsaacMoses oh, I remember hearing about that. Yeah, something that requires everybody to take some action (like use a script) has a hard time with adoption. Better if they built it in.

@MonicaCellio It's not such a necessary function.

1 hour later…
5:27 PM
@MonicaCellio @Daniel, oh, right, I forgot I had to opt in to it. Sorry about that.

3 hours later…
8:34 PM
Today, I learned that this was neither a typo nor a stray Hebrew word:
Adverb: passim ‎(not comparable)
  1. throughout or frequently
  2. here and there
  3. passim (not comparable)
  4. everywhere (almost synonymous to ubique)
  5. here and there, hither and thither; (at or to different places)

1 hour later…
9:46 PM

@msh210 Baruch tihyeh, and yeyasher kochei you and the other actual authors.

@IsaacMoses Baruch tihye too. Or, as Yitzchak might have said, gam baruch tihye.

@msh210 Edits and critiques, of course, welcome. Also, although it's seasonal, it's not a slam-dunk fit for RationalistJudaism.com's usual subject matter, in particular. The same format could be re-purposed for other Q&As without too much trouble.

Q: How are these questions (about the relation of the self to the body and soul) not duplicates?

Mr. BultitudeI flagged Am I a body with a soul or a soul with a body? as a duplicate of Is the "I" consciousness from the body or from the soul. I don't see any substantive difference between the two. It doesn't appear that anyone actually voted to close it, though my auto-generated comment got four upvotes. ...
