1:37 AM
@IsaacMoses @HodofHod @msh210 you guys around?

@Jin Good evening!

Jin
@IsaacMoses there you are. chat @ is like a Bat Signal :)

@Jin You betcha

Jin
@IsaacMoses I plan to present the site design to the community this week. But first, I'd like to have you chatroom regulars to review it first.
In case something's totally off

@Jin Sounds like fun.
Hi, @ShmuelBrin, silent starrer

1:40 AM
hi

Jin
so a brief, design brief: the overall look and feel I'm going after is a warm and welcoming look. It should have some vintage visual elements, but mixed in with a clean look. I'm not going for the script old paper 'n ink look. The pattern i'm using is more floral 'n tree branch, as I've seen in a lot of Jewish arts.
for the homepage mockup, I'm using the English text logo I showed before. On the question view, I'm using the Hebrew version.
I'd like to get your feedback on which version of the logo you think works better. IMHO, the Hebrew version looks more Jewish to me.

@Jin Nice use of the pointy finger!

Jin
@IsaacMoses and the propeller in the sidebar(question view)
the propeller will be used as a divider graphic between sidebar sections.

@Jin It does, and I love having the Rashi script up there like that, but I also miss the URL text and the full '?' effect. Is there no way to incorporate both?
What about actually using the English on the front page and the Hebrew on the question pages?
@Jin Yes! I might have missed that on this review if you hadn't mentioned it. Awesome, as well. Both of these elements will be subtle signifiers to insiders that they're in the right place.

Jin
@IsaacMoses The English version definitely works better with the "?" concept. I didn't find a good solution for the Hebrew version...
I'm not sure about having two logos... we only use one logo.png file, which is used elsewhere too (chatroom)
@IsaacMoses what do you think about the overall look and feel?

1:47 AM
@Jin What about the Hebrew in faded letters across the background of the title bar?

Jin
@IsaacMoses you mean having English in logo, but faded Hebrew letters in the background around the tree? That's certainly doable.

@Jin Yes.
@Jin Looks great.

Jin
(the English version still has the small Hebrew letter leaves too, FYI. but they're hard to tell due to size)

@Jin The typeface in the "Shalom!" box says "old West" to me a bit.

Jin
@IsaacMoses did you see the footer? I extended the tree theme.

1:49 AM
@Jin Do you think you might want to bleed the truck of the tree down across the color border a bit to get closer to the dot?

Jin
@IsaacMoses It's Georgia. I sticked with it because it's safe for Hebrew letters rendering. I was hesitant to use fancier web fonts.

@Jin Another bit I'd've missed :) beautiful

Jin
@IsaacMoses speaking of the Shalom box, I was wondering if it'd be better if that box had some message written in Hebrew?
that way, when a new user visits the site, it'd make the site more Jewish
I think having more Hebrew writings on the site would definitely help the visuals to look more Jewish. But that's your call.
btw what do you think about the crown badges? is that what you had in mind?

@Jin Worth asking on meta. It sounds like you're asking for a creatively-chosen quotation. Would be nice, but OTOH, there's already a lot of text in that box.
BTW, is there any way you could emphasize the "like Wikipedia ..." disclaimer?

Jin
@IsaacMoses yes. I'll format the text to look like how it's shown on the live site
I just did a quick copy 'n paste job, so it lost the formatting and link

1:55 AM
@Jin There's a lot of either Hebrew words or Jewish jargon in the question titles. I think that goes a long way, along with your visual elements. Plus, if you can get the Hebrew "mi yodeya" into the title bar, I think that'd be a slam dunk for "you're on a bona fide Jewish site"
@Jin Cool. If you want to use one of your leaf colors instead of bright red, that might look better.
@Jin Pretty much. Where did you get those crown glyphs?
@ShmuelBrin, please feel free to throw in your opinions!

Jin
@IsaacMoses I made them myself, after I looked at several Jewish crowns.
I was going to use a different crown shape, but it didn't work out well in that tiny size.

@Jin Good, then. You're now more familiar with the range of Jewish crown designs than I am.
@Jin Yeah, that's a good example.

Jin
@IsaacMoses I feel like I've been taking a college course in Judaism study in the past couple of weeks :)
and thank you and the others for helping me out.

@Jin Believe me, I think I can speak for everyone who's participated to say "our pleasure!" This has been a lot of fun as well as exciting.
2

Jin
for the Shalom box, I was thinking just have the word Shalom! in Hebrew (שָׁלוֹם), the rest of the message can stay in English.

2:00 AM
People are going to ask which big-name Jewish artist we hired to do the design.

Jin
@IsaacMoses well I'm flattered! I hope the visuals and the color scheme I picked worked as they intended.

@Jin That could work. Of course, people with no Hebrew reading won't know what it is, but OTOH, they won't be missing that much.
I just noticed that you do have the Hebrew "hanging fruits" in the English tree. Nice! I still think the big background letters would be nice, and wouldn't be overkill.

Jin
user image

^ with Hebrew letters in title, but I removed the hanging fruits
I can keep the "hanging fruits" I just thought they'd be redundant.

@Jin But then, the Hebrew's missing from the independent logo.
Of course, the independent logo is usually smaller, so the fruits are harder to see

Jin
@IsaacMoses the independent logo will have the bigger hebrew letters on the sides.
they'll be part of the logo, not part of the background.

2:06 AM
@Jin In that case, I think I like this way. Both the English and the Hebrew are emphasized in their own way.

Jin
@IsaacMoses I think so too. For logo use in other mediums, e.g. tshirts, stickers, promo materials etc, since the logo will be bigger, I can just keep the hanging fruits, along with the English text if it's more aesthetically pleasing.
For Apple touch icon, twitter icon, favicon etc, it'd be just the Tree, since it fits the square dimension better.

@Jin With no letters at all? That could at least have the fruits, right?

Jin
@IsaacMoses yes it will have fruits

@Jin Sounds great

Jin
well, for twitter and apple touch yes. but for favicon, it'd be too small to include it. favicon is only 16x16 pixels
so it'd just be a "tiny tree"
@IsaacMoses what do you think about the style of the voting arrows and favorite star?

2:11 AM
@Jin Are you sure you couldn't, say, get the whole text of the Haggada into there somehow?

Jin
@IsaacMoses maybe one day! when we have super mega retina monitor!

@Jin Maybe a tad too frilly.

Jin
I didn't want to make the icons too fancy, to the point where they lose their affordance. I want them to be clear that they're arrows, and stars.
@IsaacMoses ok I can make them simpler. i think i was being a bit too floral crazed.

@Jin The shapes are good. Please don't make the star yellow. Someone will complain.
3

Jin
@IsaacMoses good point! hmm what color should I use?
i didn't even think about that... sorry!
because the convention on the other SE sites are yellow or orange for the favorite star.
would an orange star be OK?

2:14 AM
@Jin No problem! It really shouldn't be a big deal, but like I said, someone will complain.
@Jin Anything but yellow should be fine.
@Jin Why not that red color, and use the yellow/orange for the lit up arrow?

Jin
^ is that better?

^ There's the palette you want to avoid
@Jin I think so.

Jin
i'll just go with a red star
and change the voting arrows to some other color
i think it's safer that way

The good news is that the shape is different (more curvy), and the black lines and letters are plainly absent. I may just be oversensitive by proxy
... but yeah, there are sensitive people out there

Jin
because if people using old monitors that have bad gamma, orange may still come off as yellow.
i used a dark brown(same as the tree color from logo) for the voting arrows.

2:20 AM
@Jin Cool
@Jin, out of curiousity, what are your normal working hours, 9-5? (pm-am) :)

Jin
@IsaacMoses oh.. good question, I'd like to know that myself..
I work from home, and I tend to do more creative type of work late at night. during the day, I do the lesser exciting stuff, like css, or replying to emails and reading metas
I normally go to bed around 4/5am
and wake up around 10:30ish. I can't sleep for too long, or I'll get a headache.

@Jin powerhouse!

Jin
@IsaacMoses it is a fun job :) and I really lose track of time when I do what I love.
I feel with every site I design, I'm learning a new topic, getting to know a new subculture. It's quite educational to me, beyond design.

So, despite the fact that launches normally happen in the afternoon, ET, any chance we could sync ours with a US-evening party?
@Jin I can tell

Jin
@IsaacMoses what time in the evening?
I can ask our dev. but normally they have a pretty set launch time.

2:25 AM
@Jin The devs are the ones who throw the switch? Is it dependent on some daily process that happens every afternoon?

@IsaacMoses godwin's rule

Jin
As of now, assuming there aren't major design changes once I post the design on meta, I'm aiming to launch the site next Tuesday.
@IsaacMoses It depends on what time you'd like to launch. If the dev is off the clock in the evening then it may be more difficult.
if you have a specific time in mind, I can ask the dev ahead of time to see if it works for him.

@Jin We'll plan the party not around that, and see if we can get that as a bonus element. If the launch happens in the afternoon and the party in the evening, that's not so bad.
@Jin May 8?

Jin
@IsaacMoses yes.

@Jin And that'll only change if you get meta comments that force you to make major changes, right?
(not trying to back you into a corner, but I do want to try to plan something around this)
(party, reach out to bloggers, maybe press, etc.)
@ShmuelBrin Indeed. And there must be a corollary thereof that says that conversations get there even sooner in the presence of Jews
2

Jin
2:36 AM
@IsaacMoses yes if no major design changes, may 8th is very doable.
That's why I wanted to show you the design here first, just to make sure the overall design is sound. I expect to tweak some minor details per Meta feedback.
@IsaacMoses and if you need press promo materials, e.g. blog banners, posters etc. please let me know. I'll provide them for you.

@Jin Thanks! I think I'll call a community chat meeting for tomorrow night to plan and nail down whatever details we can, then get back to you as soon after as we can with any graphics requests

Jin
@IsaacMoses sure. and if you want to have an online "party" I recommend Google hangout for voice, or video. otherwise, maybe a chatroom party would do just fine.
we use Google Hangout at work for those of us who work remotely. It works really well.
but of course it requires a gmail account.

@Jin I was thinking of using BlogTalkRadio, so people can call in by phone if they want, and we can control who gets to talk
... like a radio call-in show

Jin
@IsaacMoses ok that sounds good. I've never used it before.

@Jin Me, neither, but I've looked into it before, and I think it has the feature set I want. I plan to do some more investigation.
@Jin, This has been truely awesome, but I need to concentrate on some other tasks for a while now. Thanks very much. TTYL

Jin
2:47 AM
@IsaacMoses thanks for the feedback! I'll be posting the designs on Meta in the next couple of days.

@Jin Great! We're all looking forward to it. I'm sure you'll get yet more feedback

3:04 AM
@Jin, I'm catching up, but the design looks great! nice propellers, and I like how the points on the favorite star are slightly rounded, kind of removes the cliched feeling that might have resulted in a plain star of david.
@Jin Why can't the hebrew logo's "?" lead into the "yud" of the second word?
@Jin ...and one last kvetch ;): Are you planning on doing anything with the tags?
hey @DoubleAA

@HodofHod Backreading...

3:25 AM
@Jin also, I notice that the "Shalom!" box has some nice borders and scrollwork, but the chat box seems to be the standard. Will that change? What about the other boxes? Community bulletin, newsletter, site stats etc.
Do you we even have a site stats box after graduation? I guess not. And probably no "help us grow this site" either
@IsaacMoses courtesy ping ^

@Jin Good stuff! I like the propellers. I prefer the Hebrew letters as fruit not as a watermark. I must say I'm not too much of a fan of the crowns, but I don't think I liked the idea from the outset much. The roots at the bottom are definitely a nice touch. I echo Isaac's sentiment about mixing the tree more with the logo. I think the tags would look more scroll like if the polls were emphasized more. I think Shalom! in Hebrew next to the English would be best.
Finally, what does the bounty bubble look like? Is that customizable?

@DoubleAA I like it more as a watermark. It's much more visible that way

@ShmuelBrin אלו ואלו

Q: How does "eilu v'eilu" work out with an absolute truth?

MosheI'm under the impression that religious Judaism believes in absolute truths. That being the case, how does the concept of "eilu v'eilu divrei elokim chaim" (Eruvin 13b) work out? When two scholars argue, how can they both be right?

:)

@Jin What's the color scheme on meta look like?

3:36 AM

Q: Eilu V'Eilu - Until Where?

HodofHodMany times rabbis disagree on things in both hashkafa and Halacha. Usually, even when disagreeing, they will view the others' opinion as valid, even if they themselves would not rely on it. This is based on the principle of "eilu v'eilu divrei Elokim chayim" (both of these are the words of the li...

@HodofHod, it's interesting
finds Moshe's question and not yours

Jin
hi all. sorry i was afk.

@IsaacMoses על ריח וטעם יש מחלוקת כל פעם

Jin
@DoubleAA meta will be a gray version.
more b/w rather

3:39 AM
@ShmuelBrin Probably since some of the answers use a similar spelling to your query

Jin
@DoubleAA bounty bubble is customizable. but the standard convention is just a blue capsule shape.

@HodofHod true, there is "veeilu" in an answer

@ShmuelBrin and, more importantly, (I think) the spelling "Elu"

@Jin @All Any ideas for something special?

Jin
@HodofHod I tried make the yud as the dot. but it made the text not centered aligned with the tree. the asymmetrical look is not as pleasing IMO.
@DoubleAA I haven't thought about it. do you have any ideas in mind?

3:43 AM
@Jin Not right now. I was more putting it out for communal consideration. I don't think it had been mentioned in the earlier discussions.

@Jin Ok, I figured you must have tried, and I was wondering what the result was. Oh well :)

Jin
@HodofHod as for the tags, I wanted to keep them simple. in my mockup, it sort has a "scroll" look, vaguely.
the reason i normally don't over decorate the tags is because they're repeated many many times on the homepage, and the question listing page.
if they're too fancy, they really make the site look busy, also overwhelm question titles, which are much more important than tags.

@Jin Fair 'nuff, I see what you mean.

Jin
I will tweak the styling on the badges though
I'm not set on that. I'm talking about the "full badge" treatment.
full badge = badge icon plus a banner background, as shown in the sidebar, or /badges page.

@Jin and the sidebar boxes?

Jin
3:56 AM
@HodofHod chatroom box, community bulletin and newsletter will have the similar decorative style
but those boxes are a bit info dense, so they won't be as fancy as the welcome box.
Normally I make ad hoc design decisions as I convert the design to CSS at the last minute. In my experience, photoshop mockups don't always represent a real site well.
(although they're excellent at presenting the overall look and feel)

@Jin Ok, thanks so much for all this!
3

Jin
And I always tweak the designs after the site launches too. there are always newer suggestions and css bugs to fix.
for the system message, I'm thinking about having a "real scroll" look
do you think it'd be appropriate? I wasn't sure if it's the right thing to do, to present the site message as a "sacred scroll"

@Jin I think you can get away with it. There are non-sacred scrolls in our culture, too.

Jin
^ pardon the quick mockup. that's the look i was thinking

@Jin Ah. That looks particularly like a Torah scroll, which I think does present a problem
... If you put the handles on the top and the bottom, it's another story

4:09 AM
@Jin or you could just lose the handles. It'll still be recognizable as a scroll.

Jin
^ like that? i'll spend more time to polish it.

@Jin That works

Jin
I just wanted to know if you guys are OK with the "scroll" concept for the system message

Welcome, @Gigili

@Jin looks great!

4:11 AM
@Jin Yes, as long as it doesn't look particularly like a Torah scroll. Losing the handles gets you out of that

Hello. Thank you @IsaacMoses.

Jin
@Gigili hello

@IsaacMoses @Jin IMO having the handle only on one side also alleviates the issue.

Jin
@DoubleAA that's a good point. I can try that.

@Jin ie Have a handle and wrap on the left, and have the virtual parchment just end on the right.

4:26 AM
@DoubleAA or perhaps end in a "<" or a sideways "M" shape, whatever you call that.

anyone want to help me test blogtalkradio in 4 minutes?

@HodofHod A wrinkle?

Jin
@IsaacMoses I can hear u

there's a tape delay

Jin
4:31 AM
@IsaacMoses do you know if I can call with skype?
nm i see the skype icon
hm I can't seem to call with skype.

@Jin Maybe try again. I was off for a minute by accident, so it may have disabled others from calling in
anyone want to try phoning in?
(646) 200-0984

Jin
i'm calling
says i'm in the host queue
i can hear you
through my computer, but not my phone
i can hear you on the phone, can you hear me?

@Jin nono
@Jin are you on skype or phone?

Jin
my cell phone
i was not able to call via skype. it cuts off right away.

@Jin Hmm. I clicked the "live" button for you, so I expect you should be able to talk on the show

Jin
4:39 AM
hmm i am talking, but i don't think you can hear me?

@Jin nope

Jin
hmm

your phone isn't on mute or anything silly like that, right?
anyone else listening?

@IsaacMoses I would, but my internet connection is too flaky to try any streaming or anything. Not to mention data caps apply

so, phone works, but Jin and I both tried skype and failed
good news is almost everyone has a phone

4:54 AM
Heh, not that everyone would use it to call a random number on the web.
I'm listening anyway.

anywho, I'm gonna go to bed. see y'all later!

@HodofHod good night
@Gigili It won't be so random. It'll be vouched for by this site's mods

Umm, right. Sorry that I was no help.
You're all blue, ishh.

5:16 AM
I agree with all of this except that I think the tags are good as are:
