@AlanMunn That's an interesting term "security by obscurity". Thanks.

2:15 AM
hey, friends!!! please help!
No file PythonArchitecture.nav.
! Undefined control sequence.
pdflatex is failing me!

@AaronHall Not a lot to go on. It this a beamer document?

beamer!
yes
No file PythonArchitecture.toc.

I'm using orgmode.

Well beamer can sometimes be messed up with corrupt aux files, so I would first start by deleting them all and recompiling. Can you compile a simple beamer document?

I guess I need to try bisecting my orgmode file... comment the whole thing with # ?

@AaronHall I don't have any experience with orgmode, I'm afraid. But typically the way to find this kind of error is to move the \end{document} backwards halfway etc. until you find the frame that causes the error.

2:29 AM
ok

@AaronHall The line number can sometimes be a clue, but not always, since the error might be earlier than that.

modify the generated tex file
91?
ok, it looks like there's an extra }
?

@AaronHall Yes, that's the line number in the file (I suspect).

I love Knuth, but "gobble"?

@AaronHall Which more likely means you're missing a { earlier.
It 'eats' a token. :)
After all, TeX is described in terms of operations that happen in its mouth and its stomach!

2:31 AM
yeah, but the file is auto-generated from orgmode...

@AaronHall Yes, this is a bit worrisome...

maybe I should delete it all and try again...
but it works like make, right?
save, new timestamp, new compile?

@AaronHall Sort of. As I said, beamer can be screwed up with corrupted aux files. But since your source is the orgmode file, then I guess yes, you could delete all the associated files and try again.
@AaronHall Do you have any raw LaTeX in your orgmode file or is it all generated from markdown?

all generated
sorry for stepping away, had to medicate my kitty... she had a UTI, vet gave us more antibiotics.

@AaronHall Hmm. So it's a bit strange that it's not working. Was it producing an output before?

2:44 AM
no, starting from scratch, kinda, but with an old header...
anyways, commenting stuff worked, I now have a pdf.
with errors. :(
oh well, now I have something to work with, I think.

@AaronHall Ok. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I don't have any experience with orgmode, and debugging generated documents is tricky. Good luck.

yeah, why can't we generate stuff with Python?
That would be killer.

@AaronHall One possibility is if your orgmode installation is newer than your TeX distribution?

probably is, spacemacs uses the latest orgmode for some reason.
Tex is whatever's in Ubuntu 14.04

@AaronHall Well there is ctan.org/pkg/pythontex?lang=en

2:49 AM
but they wouldn't screw that up, would they?
ok, gotta get back to writing! Thanks for helping! I would not have thought to bisect if I hadn't popped in here.
It's dumb, but it works.

@AaronHall That's really old, I think. TeX Live 2013? or 2014? Most people here use a vanilla TeX Live installation instead of using the linux packaged ones.

does that install from a .deb?

@AaronHall No. See below:

I'll read it. Cheers!

Good luck.

@AlanMunn it seems to be generating everything on a single slide :(

@AaronHall Does even one slide work?
@AaronHall Can you paste the generated .tex file here? (The smallest one that you can make that generates this error.)

sorry, I grabbed more than I thought, but it's all there, I think.

@AaronHall Ok the problem is that you are not generating any slides at all, and this is causing the error. So there is something you are doing wrong with your orgmode doc I think.
@AaronHall Specifically, the following document doesn't produce the error:

\documentclass[smaller,aspectratio=169]{beamer}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{fixltx2e}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{grffile}
\usepackage{longtable}
\usepackage{wrapfig}
\usepackage{rotating}
\usepackage[normalem]{ulem}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{textcomp}
\usepackage{amssymb}
\usepackage{capt-of}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\usepackage{upquote}

\hypersetup{

ok, the pdf is just a table of contents?

4:09 AM
@AaronHall I don't know how you're getting anything out of it (it produced your error for me).
But see that I have added (manually) \begin{frame} ... \end{frame} code and that makes the error go away.
In orgmode I think the markup for a frame (=slide) is **, but I'm not sure.

where did you add it?
around toc?

@AaronHall Well I added one around the \tableofcontents command and one around the first bit of text. Then the error disappeared.

@AaronHall And I'm not saying this is what you need to do manually, but you do need to figure out how to get orgmode to do this properly.

yeah
I have #+BEAMER_FRAME_LEVEL: 2

4:15 AM
Try this:
*The architecture of Python
**Introduction
Python - the language of the future
- a list item

**The second slide
Some more stuff
- a list item

**The third slide
Some text
@AaronHall This should produce 3 slides.

Yeah, but it doesn't... :(

Same error?

(needs spaces after the *'s too)
same error

@AaronHall Then I'm out of ideas, unfortunately. I understand what the problem is, but I don't know how to get orgmode to do it.

I'm going to try cutting down the header now...

4:23 AM
@AaronHall Try the minimal header:
#+startup: beamer
#+LaTeX_CLASS: beamer
#+LaTeX_CLASS_OPTIONS: [bigger]
#+BEAMER_FRAME_LEVEL: 2
(I assume there may be some more stuff I don't understand, but this should be the minimal beamer stuff I think)

yeah, same error
I'm using spacemacs...
maybe I should just use vanilla for now...
I started out with this problem:

Q: How to get title and author in org mode export to beamer presentation?

AnushaThe org-export to beamer gives the following error when the first lines include title and author info. #+TITLE: Presentation Title #+AUTHOR: Name "Wrong type argument: listp, #("Name" 0 4(:parent (#0)))" I have used this format many times and don't know why this error is occurring now. Has ...

@AaronHall Yeah, that looks like it might be the issue. But I'm unable to help you on that side of things. I use emacs very infrequently (I mainly use a TeXShop on the Mac and TextWrangler for coding) and I've never used orgmode at all.

@AaronHall I need to go now. Good night.

Thanks! Good night!

2 hours later…
6:51 AM
Morning all

@JosephWright morning (so you made me feel guilty now for always having latex.ltx and not a bunch of dtx files in my emacs:-)

@DavidCarlisle :-)
@DavidCarlisle latex.ltx is something of a special case
@DavidCarlisle For expl3 I wouldn't recommend using expl3-code.tex

@AlanMunn you should know, it appears to be a problem with newer versions of emacs. :(
I reverted to the main emacs version, and it works. :)
(on Ubuntu 14.04)

@DavidCarlisle One might argue that today (with comment skipping very fast) the .dtx format might not be so useful

while there's some activity here - how do I tweak the background color of my slides?
(beamer)
I'm using orgmode, so if you know of a compatible method, that's even better, but I'm willing to hack my outputted .tex file at this point. good night!

7:20 AM
@DavidCarlisle I did say the assumption: if you are working from the starting point 'everyone will simply read the .sty' then I wouldn't write a .dtx in the first place (rather more the ConTeXt approach, but they have some 'magic' to their comments)

7:40 AM
@AaronHall I think adding \setbeamercolor{background canvas}{bg=violet} to the preamble should do it (cf. tex.stackexchange.com/questions/8043/…).

@TorbjørnT. Yup, that's the one

8:16 AM
Is there any package that provides \mathsym? This is generated by Mathematica, and I cannot find any references to it with Google. I suspect that it is something specific to Mathematica, maybe intended to be defined by the user, but not documented ...

2 hours later…
10:37 AM
@Szabolcs Possibly in the packages provided by Wolfram.

@egreg Thanks

11:10 AM

11:48 AM
After spending days getting the formating to work, I find that tex4ht do not handle "--" in code when in CDATA block, it changes it to NAK code. Now I have to find different way to format the code in HTML, some other library that does not require code to be in CDATA. Sometimes I wonder why I use latex to make HTML and not just write HTML directly.

12:03 PM
HaTeX is a Haskell library that implements the LaTeX syntax, plus some abstractions on top. Currently the implementation of some math spacing commands are pending due to the lack of suitable names for them (AMSMath.hs). I would like to have suggestions of names for them. Anyone?
They are: \, \: \; \! \
Do you think this is a suitable question to publish on this site?

@Romildo Personally, I don't think so. thinspace, medspace, thickspace, negspace, space?

12:41 PM
@Nasser why do you want the CDATA block there (it's invalid javascript anyway) (you can hardly expect tex4ht which is just copying that section to the output look through for <![CDATA[ characters and change it's mode?

@TorbjørnT. thanks for the name suggestions. I am going to do a PR to implement them.

@Nasser ligatures work a bit differently in luatex, it's probably not hard to turn them off for the font tex4ht is using, but no time to experiment with that today.

Anybody can compile this? I tried to install pgfornament in the working document folder, but it doesn't seem to work ...

4:52 PM
@VincentVerheyen The problem is with the %!TEX program = latex directive, which TeXShop uses to process with latex+dvips. Change this to %!TEX program = pdflatex and then compile twice and it should work. (I'm assuming you mean cfr's solution in the answer).
@VincentVerheyen You shouldn't have to install pgfornament if you have an up-to-date installation, so I would remove the local one you installed. Local installation of things that are usually part of TeX Live only leads to future problems.

Anonymous
5:06 PM
@AlanMunn If I don't install pgfornament (TL 2015), I get "pgfornament.sty not found". --- But if I place everything in the document folder, it works;

@VincentVerheyen Ok. Just be aware that when you update to TL 2016 (or later) that old version will never get updated and take precedence over any newer version in the system.

@JosephWright this isn't "us" is it?
! Undefined control sequence.
<argument> ...r_lower_case:f {Delta}}\prop_get:cV

@DavidCarlisle Let me check
@DavidCarlisle Oh, not, this got renamed
@DavidCarlisle Should be \prop_item:cV, but we don't define that variant anyway ...

@JosephWright I was half way through a standard "don't do contrib packages here " reply but then noticed an l3 error, you're the chemist do you want to reply or should I just send the standard "contact the package authors" ?

@DavidCarlisle I'd been expecting the 'not our fault' reply :-) I'll ping Clemens
@DavidCarlisle Oh, not Clemens, sorry

@JosephWright I just got actually, been to a thing at school

@DavidCarlisle This is 'works for me' anyway, so it's likely an old version

7:42 PM
@JosephWright ah I'll try that and add that to the text, would be a bit more encouraging
@JosephWright works here too, thanks

@DavidCarlisle I see the issue: old chemgreek

@JosephWright flippin mail bounced from OPs address:-)

@DavidCarlisle Now I look at this, I think I told Clemens about the chemgreek issue and he fixed it, which is why it's OK in the current release
@DavidCarlisle I love the way we say 'don't report to us but ...' then explain what the issue is and get it fixed anyway :-)

@JosephWright need to eat but then I suppose I'd better sort out pdftex.def/pstricks/psfrag issues:-)

@DavidCarlisle :-)

7:49 PM
@JosephWright it's always been that way:-)
@JosephWright aside from today's issue I think plan was to rename latex3/luatex-def repo to latex3/graphics-def and add pdftex,xetex,xdvipdfm and possibly dvips .def to it.

@DavidCarlisle Sounds reasonable
@DavidCarlisle I hope Frank doesn't mind this creeping Git use!
I guess he'd say ...

@JosephWright it sounded reasonable as the files hadn't changed for years but Phil reports a weird pagecolor bug in xetex.def and then Herbet reports pdftex.def bug within a couple of days.

@DavidCarlisle Always the way
@DavidCarlisle I really should look at l3graphics on my summer hols :-)

@JosephWright for Phil's pagecolor issue I'm really tempted to rip out all the pagecolor code in xetex.def as I can't really see what it's trying to do, and it's not documented and it's not ideal that individual option files for graphics have \def\shipout{...
@JosephWright but I know if I do someone somewhere will complain that a page background has changed colour

@DavidCarlisle Eeek
@DavidCarlisle Indeed

8:05 PM
@JosephWright Herbert's issue is similar in a way, in that foo.def was supposed to be the lowest level driver dependent part that just interfaced to the driver specials and it ends up acquiring code to work around issues if graphics, pstricks and psfrag are all loaded at the same time, which might be needed and probably is since it's been that way for ages, but makes a mockery of the "layered" approach to the design. (which is always a bit fragile in 2e anyway:-)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, understand entirely
@DavidCarlisle Probably some lessons for L3, but we can worry about those later

8:27 PM
Wow, two xassoccnt questions within one hour ;-) And both related to the page counter ;-)
@Johannes_B: Are you planning to visit the DANTE Herbsttagung in September in Göttingen?

@ChristianHupfer No, sorry.

@Johannes_B What a pity. I plan to attend it, it's the last weekend of School holidays here in Baden-Württemberg, so I have time yet.

TeX Collection DVDs are on there way ...

@ChristianHupfer School holidays stared this week here.

@Johannes_B Still four weeks to go here in Baden-Württemberg, starting on 2016/7/28
@JosephWright I've got my DANTE one this morning

8:32 PM
@ChristianHupfer How much is $5 \cdot 100\,\%$? Ah, i think i told you about this before :-)

8:50 PM
@ChristianHupfer Makes sense: they are shipping them today to other user groups, so probably got them out to their own members first

@JosephWright something to add to my collection of unopened texlive dvd envelopes:-)

@DavidCarlisle I can happily miss you off the mailing

@JosephWright I usually take it to work and leave it in the draw in case anyone asks for tex but (a) they don't and (b) it's probably as quick over the internet anyway so i don't think i used the last couple at all.

@DavidCarlisle I also take one or two to work; thus far I have given them out as people want to install off-line
@DavidCarlisle Obviously I'm at the advantage of having the UK-TUG 'promotional' reserves available

@David: I never get those things in my mail. :(

9:00 PM
@PauloCereda You should get one
@PauloCereda May be a little while: I'm off at conferences for two weeks

@JosephWright I am an outcast. :(
ooh :)

@PauloCereda Provided I get let in to Europe, of course

@JosephWright oh no!

9:41 PM
Penalties...

@AlanMunn Gove versus May?

@JosephWright :)
@JosephWright One of my FB friends suggestion for a slogan “Taking Gove out of Government”

@AlanMunn :)

1 hour later…
10:47 PM
Guys, do you have this "type" of Coca-Cola? I found out today!
It uses stevia and sugar cane as sweetener.
Surely @egreg knows about it. :)

@PauloCereda Tastes different.

@PauloCereda yes in the UK they call it Coca Cola Life

@Johannes_B I wasn't brave enough to try it! And I was lost into to the depth of the brown eyes of this girl behind the cashier...

I cannot stand the light or zero ones but that one is actually nice.

@ArTourter Cool! I might try it later. :)

10:56 PM
@PauloCereda I know the feeling, buddy :-)

@Johannes_B ooh

11:09 PM
@PauloCereda I think I drank some Coca-Cola last year.

@egreg oh my! :)

@PauloCereda I've never seen it here in the U.S. but then again I never look since I don't ever buy soft drinks except if I'm eating fast food, in which case it comes out of a machine.

@AlanMunn Interesting. I've not seen an ad on TV.

@PauloCereda I got a can for free, so I decided I could drink it. But it was the standard red can.

@egreg If you had the green one, you could almost make the Italian flag. :)

11:14 PM
@PauloCereda Not the right shade of green. ;-)

@egreg ooh

@PauloCereda Apparently it's been available nationwide since 2015, but I've never seen it myself. It's also called Coca Cola Life here. Who knew!

@egreg: in Portuguese, there's one tone of green which is called verde-bandeira, which is literally translated as flag-green. I wonder if my flag green is the same of your flag green, which might cause problems in the future. :) I wonder if xcolor has this covered. :)
@AlanMunn Oh my, I need to get out more!

@PauloCereda I don't think it's available in Brazil. So you'd need to really get out more. Closest place for you is Argentina. :) You could drown your sorrows with Messi.

@AlanMunn it is, I just saw today! :)

11:19 PM
@PauloCereda Ah, I see.

@AlanMunn Also:
25 mins ago, by Paulo Cereda
@Johannes_B I wasn't brave enough to try it! And I was lost into to the depth of the brown eyes of this girl behind the cashier...
Sorry for to teh gramarz.

11:44 PM
@JosephWright -- is this the week for "answer the unanswered", or are there too many holidays going on?

why isn't anyone around in *scratch* I wonder...

@AaronHall I won't buy this record, it is scratched

hi, @PauloCereda. quack! isn't this the last day to pick a random number in the great duck jackpot?

@barbarabeeton Hi, Barbara! Writing a reply to you at this very moment! Yes, this is the last day. :)

where do emacs people usually hang out?

11:47 PM
@AaronHall Waiting for vim users to trip them.

@AaronHall boo :)
@egreg boo :)
@egreg don't you have an M-x hangout? :)

@PauloCereda It automatically executes the annoy-vim-users function

@egreg oh no!
