Is it possible to create topographic maps (height) in LaTeX?

Anonymous
Could you perhaps import height data from GIS?

Anonymous
2:37 AM
For example SRTM data?

6:15 AM
@VincentVerheyen Probably, with a bit of investment, you can make a toaster boil eggs. LaTeX is for typesetting stuff, i wouldn't use it for other things.

6:58 AM
@VincentVerheyen Perhaps, but I wouldn't do it; as @Johannes_B says it's just not an appropriate tool for the job. Of course, if you disregard projections you could make a contour plot with e.g. pgfplots, but that's of limited use. Probably the most powerful map-generating package is pst-geo (there are a couple of examples on the site, find them through search), but I don't know if that can do what you ask.

7:10 AM
Good maen
@PauloCereda El niño or la niña perhaps?

@ChristianHupfer Morning.
Any new template questioins of interest? Maybe one of those using this dreaded MastersDoctoralThesis thingie?

@Johannes_B Erm..... no, thanks ;-)

Last seen october, where did he went? tex.stackexchange.com/users/19356/kiss-my-armpit

7:37 AM
@Johannes_B users come and go -- that user was at least not a careless one, from which we have too much of them, who just grabb just the answer and never come back, never give feedback

@ChristianHupfer He has recently replied to a mailing list, if i am not mistaken.

yo'
@Johannes_B she, quite certainly

@yo' Then i am mistaking the user for somebody else.

@yo' I also remember that that user is a woman

yo'
@Johannes_B maybe for xport?

7:43 AM
@yo' xport is also a woman though (right?).

yo'
@TorbjørnT. no idea chais pas

@yo' My browser doesn't want to show me the little user pictures. Was that the chicken one?

@TorbjørnT. @yo' last seen more than four years ago

yo'
@Johannes_B indeed

@yo' My French isn't that good (pretty much non-existent, in fact), what does that mean?
@Johannes_B Yes.

7:45 AM
@yo' Ah. That was before my time, tough.

yo'
@TorbjørnT. dunno

@yo' Did you mention chickens?

@ChristianHupfer At the time, i hadn't answered a single support question.

yo'
@egreg hens, yeah

@egreg Quack!

7:47 AM
@Johannes_B At that time I was not even a member of TeX.SX (and did not know that it exists ;-))

@ChristianHupfer Same here :-)

yo'
anyway, time to go to work

@ChristianHupfer By the way, you have a fb message.

@Johannes_B Oh, I am not very often in FB recently. I considered to delete my account, eventually

@ChristianHupfer Me neither. But that picture ...

yo'
7:50 AM
How do you politely refuse invitation for lunch in the sense of "no paying for it", but still go for the lunch with that person and pay it yourself?

@yo' "No, this time it's my turn to pay (for all)" -- that's very polite ;-)

yo'
@ChristianHupfer yeah, I know, but that's something I better avoid :) thanks anyway. I'll have to think something out in the underground

@yo' I don't see a problem in being invited this time and next time, it's really your turn then -- most likely, both have paid equal amounts then.

8:22 AM
@DavidCarlisle did the 2007 version of article.cls also have 1.4h? tex.stackexchange.com/q/307599/37907

 %</driver>
-              [2007/10/19 v1.4h
+              [2014/09/29 v1.4h
@Johannes_B looks like it (there were no code changes just some doc typos reported by Karl, looks like Frank decided to leave the version number)

@DavidCarlisle Oh, ok. I was wondering.
Thanks

8:44 AM
@egreg :-) vvvv
Personally I'd use tabular. egreg answers the problem as asked but the only thing tabularx is doing there is separating the left hand column from the data, so making the table harder to read, it would be easier to read if the table was just natural width and centred. — David Carlisle 2 mins ago

Another one of those great question titles for the Hot Network Questions sidebar that makes you look to see what site it's on! — Peter Cordes yesterday
Certainly got me interested.

@Johannes_B I am scared by your interest in that ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Strange questions on the network. Very strange.

@DavidCarlisle For once I agree with you

9:22 AM
@DavidCarlisle The train was arriving when I posted my answer; give me time! ;-)

10:01 AM
I gotta go, fix as you see fit. I am in a special mood as you might read between the lines.

A: Header and text font isn't changing

Johannes_BI love templates, i don't hate them. I really do. Templates are the best thing in the world. Always a reason for anger and amusement. \documentclass{scrreprt}% \usepackage{cleanthesis} \usepackage{fontspec} \setmainfont{TeX Gyre Heros} %\addtokomafont{chapter}{\fontspec{TeX Gyre Heros}} \renewc...

10:31 AM
@StefanKottwitz You know my lovve for templates ;-)

2 hours later…
12:33 PM
@yo' -- you might say "i'd really like to have lunch with you, but i would like to pay for mine. thank you for the invitation."
@PauloCereda -- oh, dear! it's not even really winter yet. has it ever been known to snow where you live? (i recommend silk turtlenecks for an under-layer. less scratchy than long woolies.)

1:19 PM
@barbarabeeton Today I woke up with a freezing 4C! Now I am in São Paulo and the temperature is around 12C. :) Being exposed to this level of freezing makes me wonder if I really want to see how snow looks like... :)

1:31 PM
@PauloCereda The mountains around here have snow.

@PauloCereda Frozen Duck is scared of Snow ;-)

2:01 PM
@PauloCereda Ducks are not scared of snow!

2:32 PM
@UlrikeFischer Wow, they really like snow! :) There's one prepared for skiing. :)
@egreg Oh, when I visit you, I promise to be prepared for snowy places. :)

@PauloCereda Don't expect snow in the summer…

@egreg, @Christian, @Ulrike: when in my first international trip to Europe, before leaving São Paulo (and Brazil), I checked the current weather forecast in Madrid and Barcelona and the temperature was mildly warm. Later, there was I walking in Barcelona with a huge coat while the thermometers marked close to 30C; I didn't take the thermal sensation into account! The wind was freezing, but the sun was very, very bright!
@DavidCarlisle brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
@David: when you visit me, I will take you to the beach. :)

@PauloCereda Like this? VVVVVV
@PauloCereda Totò and Peppino de Filippo, when arriving at Milan from their home town in southern Italy: “a Milano fa freddo e c'è la nebbia”.
And Peppino is saying “io sento caldo”.

@egreg We fear that one also no longer can expect snow in the winter. Skiing is getting difficult. Btw: we plan to go to emilia romagna in september.

2:41 PM
@UlrikeFischer No snow, then. ;-)

@egreg That's fine for a summer holiday ;-)

@egreg ooooh :)
@UlrikeFischer hopefully, there will be ducks in ponds. :)

2 hours later…
4:20 PM
@cfr I am quite sure @esdd will see the question. :-)

5:19 PM
@egreg xport?

5:59 PM
@JosephWright Who else? 😀

1 hour later…
yo'
7:10 PM
@PauloCereda Got new headphones for my piano and they are ... awesome :)

7:21 PM
@yo' What model did you get? :)

yo'
@phell Yamaha HPH-150

@yo' Looks good. Are they comfortable for the ears?

yo'
@phell so far so good :)

/me offers the chat home baked blueberry muffins

yo'
7:40 PM
@phell oh blueberries!

@yo' I ate three already. Not sure if I should eat more. :P

yo'
@phell I haven't got dinner yet :p

@yo' What will you have for dinner? I had aubergine (egg plant) with cheese and ham in the oven. Layered a bit like lasagna. Seasoned with oregano.

yo'
@phell I'll have some leftovers: chicken pieces with ginger and stuff, veggies, and rice + fries as side dish

@ Sounds good to me. My wife just spoiled me with vanilla ice-cream. :P

yo'
7:46 PM
@phell oh ice cream! Reminds me of: I'm running out of ice cream :)
ok, fries are spoiled, so no fries today :D

@yo' I saw a video on Youtube discussing reheating of food. Especially rice is important to heat thoroughly. They recommended heating, stirring and then heating again.

yo'
8:03 PM
@phell my microwave takes care of this

@phell Origano. ;-)

@egreg Oh I was sure it was spelled oregano. :P
My favourite dish at the moment is sliced zucchini, tuna, tomato sauce, origano, cheese in an oven form. My wife calls it zucchini pizza.

yo'
@phell it is spelled with e in my language at least :p but actually, it's better called dobromysl

@phell I may know just a little TeX, as @DavidCarlisle will happily confirm, but at least I know Italian. :)
2

@egreg Hee hee hee.

8:15 PM
@yo' 'e' in English too

@phell @egreg conosce solo un dialetto locale. Non capisce formale italiana ed usati per me.

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I can't understand what language your sentence was written in. :P

@egreg proves my point:-)

@DavidCarlisle Or that Google knows very little Italian.
@JosephWright Well, the English are wrong. :P Or the Spaniards, that's the same.

@egreg everyone has to have faith in something.

8:23 PM
@DavidCarlisle Io non parlo italiano.
I know Swedish, English, some German and poquito Spanish.
No nos gusta eso de spaniards
Hee hee hee. My wife got upset over the use of "Spaniards".

@phell Mae pob iaith yn gyfartal i mi,

@DavidCarlisle that is a truly beautiful language. :)

Good job @cfr's not here;-)

cfr
9:00 PM
@phell Yn wir i chi ;) Iaith y nefoedd!
@DavidCarlisle Yn wir i chi :(.

@cfr is that Gaelic or Welsh?

Mae'r iaith yn wirioneddol brydferth.

@cfr Google Translate identifies “Yn wir i chi” as German. ;-)

@PauloCereda My new labels for kitchen storage jars ;-)

9:08 PM
Hee hee hee. Beth mae'r hwyaden yn ei ddweud?
Ooh, Google translate has latin too.

@phell Latine loqui possumus.

@egreg In silva negra vivo ;-)

yo'
@phell Corpus omne perseverare

@yo' Et semper procrastinare

@yo' Si nocte animam tuam bonum putas omnia.

yo'
9:18 PM
@egreg you seem not to be literate in classical physics :-)

@egreg TeX multi usus.

9:33 PM
@yo' egreg is a master of Physics ;-)
@yo': One of @egreg's famous equations in Physics ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I'll patent it

10:18 PM
Home sweet home! :)

cfr
@phell Welsh.
@egreg Mae Gŵgl yn wallgof! Tybio beth bydd Gŵgl yn dweud am hynny....

Cold day, ducks are very sensible to weather changes. :)
Jasper! Quack!

user174558
@PauloCereda Quack!

@WillHunting Quack quack!

user174558
I was trying to quack before you!

10:31 PM
@WillHunting Ducks are very perceptive. :)

cfr
Cwac cyn i'r hwyaden!
@PauloCereda ^^

user174558
I bought the fifth edition of More Math Into LaTeX. It is very big.

@cfr awwww <3

user174558
I think it is currently the best book on LaTeX available.

user174558
It is very strange that it is not listed on the TUG website...

user174558
10:35 PM
Oh, I am using Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS now.

@WillHunting best is always a little bit .... opinion-based ;-) But perhaps you're right. I don't have the book

user174558
@ChristianHupfer Yes, but it is the most comprehensive I think, especially for formulas.

@ChristianHupfer It reminds me of @Johannes' alphabet letters with animals and adjectives. :)
@yo' ooh new headphones! :D

yo'
@PauloCereda my piano is an even better piano now :)

@yo' Great to hear, pal! <3

10:40 PM
@PauloCereda Yes, but you know -- ducks in storage jars... ;-) Do you remember the MP episode about storage jars? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer oh I actually don't. :(

yo'
@ChristianHupfer Ducks in storage jars? Someone mentioned foie gras? :)

user174558
The summer olympics is in Brazil this year.

Yes, they are! And I really hope they weren't. :)

user174558
@PauloCereda Do they speak Portuguese in Brazil?

10:42 PM
@WillHunting Correct, although it's not the same language from Portugal, it's a variation of it called Brazilian Portuguese.

user174558
@PauloCereda Aha! I am trying to learn French, German, Italian and Spanish. =)

@WillHunting How nice! :)
@Will: all of them (except perhaps German) are daughters of Latin, so you will be fine. :)

user174558
Aha, the Romance languages.

user174558
Actually, English and German are West Germanic languages, while French, Italian and Spanish are Romance languages.

user174558
The Romance languages share great similarity between words.

10:46 PM
@WillHunting Nevertheless both English an German use a lot of words from Latin origin (and I am German)

@cfr This is scanned as Welsh. :)

user174558
@egreg I bought Curves and Surfaces by the Italians Marco Abate and Francesca Tovena. =)

user174558
@ChristianHupfer Germany is my favourite country. I hope to be born there my next life. =)

@WillHunting Germans are awesome!
<3

user174558
@PauloCereda Ducks are awesome, especially Brazilian ducks. =)

10:49 PM
@WillHunting Yes, come to the Dark Side ;-)

@WillHunting awwww <3

@PauloCereda <3

@ChristianHupfer Das Darkside! <3

@PauloCereda Das gefrorene Ente :-P

> There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark.
@ChristianHupfer Das böse Ente!
:)

user174558
10:50 PM
Three things shine brightly: the sun, the moon, and the Dhamma.

user174558
@PauloCereda In the past, I told you that yum does not remove the dependencies of X when you remove X. It only removes packages having X as dependencies. Now dnf does remove them too, provided they are not used by other packages, so it is good.

@WillHunting Yep, I was gonna mention that. :) I am very happy with dnf. :)

user174558
@PauloCereda I remember in the past, you could not see the difference. Maybe you were tired that day. =)

@WillHunting I don't even remember what I had for lunch today. :) But yum was quite powerful at the time, perhaps now dnf has incorporated by default a couple of goodies yum already had in the past, but with less alias. :)

@WillHunting I met Francesca Tovena in some summer courses and competitions for positions!

10:57 PM
@egreg ooh

user174558
@egreg Now Springer has an entire series called Unitext which consists of Italian math books, some in Italian and some translated into English. It is not the same as Universitext.

@PauloCereda It was a small company of people going around Italy for these competitions.

@egreg ah I see. :)

user174558
I love Italian opera. Vincero! Vincero!

user174558
In the past, I wanted to be a singer. Maybe I will be in future, who knows.

user174558
11:05 PM
Why are you people not sleeping yet?

user174558
It's so late in Europe!

cfr
@egreg Diolch byth ;).
@egreg What does it mean in German, anyway?
@WillHunting The night is yet young ....

@cfr It's recognized as Welsh, but the translation into English is “thanks butt”. :-O

@egreg that's naughty!

cfr
11:33 PM
@egreg For me, it claims 'diolch byth' is Spanish but translates it correctly. It also claims 'yn wir i chi' is Spanish and translates it into English as 'we Yn i chi' ??!!

@cfr Complain fiercely!
@cfr nid yw Google yn gwybod Cymraeg

cfr
@egreg I can't imagine how it would come up with that. Even if it doesn't know the phrase and is using a literal translation, it shouldn't come up with that. It means 'thank goodness' (which is the translation I get when it claims it is Spanish). A literal translation would be something like 'thank ever'.
@egreg There's an improved version. My uni tells people to use that to translate emails they receive in Welsh if they are English-speakers. But it is a collaboration between the Welsh Language Board and MS, so you can only access it by using Office 365 email or something.
(Which appears to throw significant parts of my email away without trace. Repeatedly. A colleague received all his past email all over again. It is a great system - you can see why they chose it! Absolutely not compliant with any open standards, as well. What more could you ask?)
@egreg They do tell people on no account to use the allegedly improved system to reply, mind you.
@egreg I think you're missing a treiglad. That is a very formal sentence.
