12:00 AM
@masfenix Have you tried it both ways?

@yo' that's a good point. I'll take that into consideration.

@Werner You may catch @DavidCarlisle with some effort. He's still 175 points shy of @GonzaloMedina.

@yo' what thingy?

yo'
@FaheemMitha R thingy ;) but it probably does a good job if you're a stats person. Still, the mixing of programming and text export ...

@FaheemMitha I am in the part of my research where I am getting results. So for organization, I thought I'd ask first.

12:00 AM
@yo' You mean the R programming environment?

incase there was a standard

@masfenix Unlikely. But you can post both your versions on the site, and ask people to comment.

yo'
@FaheemMitha yep. Mainly of the idea that R exports somehow directly to LaTeX.

@yo' Exporting R plots to LaTeX via tikzdevice is a useful feature.
R itself is crap, but very popular. And ggplot2 is a killer app.
These days it is pratically the only reason I use R.

yo'
@FaheemMitha yep. Writing whole articles in R (which some do AFAI understand) is questionable

12:05 AM
@yo' Whole articles in R? How?
That sweave thing?

yo'
@FaheemMitha I dunno really, that's what I grasped the site
@FaheemMitha ah, probably

@yo' ok
@yo' sweave is some bizarre substitute for a proper build system that R people use.

@egreg @DavidCarlisle purposefully leaves packages in a state of flux, promotes them for usage globally, and then question(s) start pouring in, so he can answer them. Very rabble-rouser-y.

It seems to work for them.
OTOH, R is better than freaking Matlab and SAS and all those vile proprietary tools. Not that that is saying much.

yo'
@FaheemMitha yeah. well, I dunno
and I gotta go
ciao

12:08 AM
@masfenix how is your user experience with tikzdevice so far?
I notice that development seems to have picked up again after a lull. But some new people, not the original author.

@egreg 275, I think :)

@GonzaloMedina Oh, yes!

My supervisor still wants me to use MATLAB. I can't, R is just awesome.
@FaheemMitha I've only used it once to get a very very simple plot.
As I get more complex results, I'll try to give you an update through chat (and if I remember :P)

12:30 AM
@masfenix eww
@masfenix Ok.
ggplot2 is very useful, but somewhat buggy.
and the devs don't care about fixing the bugs I find.
There is a python fork, but it doesn't seem production-ready.

12:46 AM
@FaheemMitha actually, I just have too much code written in R to move to MATLAB
and my research is in bioinformatics - which I find the bioConductor packages to be awesome

1:02 AM
@masfenix you don't want to move to MATLAB anyway. It's definitely a worse choice than R.
Are you a grad student?

1:25 AM
yes

2:13 AM
@masfenix ok. Bioinformatics?
Oh, you said that already.

7 hours later…
8:44 AM
@PauloCereda Did you see the two l3build pull requests?

9:00 AM
@JosephWright Can you zap tex.stackexchange.com/a/230372/4427 ?

@egreg Done

@egreg Just joined. Anyone there?

@induktio Hi! You seem to have two different names!

@induktio Hello

I did change my name from induktio a while back to crash, as it is now
does it show up differently in here or something?

9:07 AM
@induktio I see it as “induktio”; don't bother. Where are you from?

@egreg Ah, I might need to make the name change SE-wide then. I am from the east coast in the USA.
@egreg I've always wanted to chat with you haha! Really have wanted to pick your brain about TeX for a while
I had such a hard time picking it up in the beginning (a couple of years ago).

@induktio Just let it flow; and don't question the choices TeX/LaTeX make until you're experienced and can do judgments. Among the worst errors one can make, there's trying to customize the output like it can be done with word processors. The motto is: if something is difficult to do with TeX, there are good chances it's typographically disputable.
@induktio Please, also tell you always wanted to chat with @DavidCarlisle, or he'll get offended.

@egreg Haha! Is there some sort of rivalry or something?

@induktio I'm better at cricket than he. ;-)

@egreg Them be fighting words!

9:15 AM
@GonzaloMedina but you're not counting...

@egreg Mostly, I am curious as to how best to devote my time to become more proficient in TeX and LaTeX. I definitely have the passion and the willingness. That is certainly not the issue. Mostly, I've just thought reading Knuth would be the best idea. But are there any books (in English because I'm not multilingual unfortunately) that you would consider very outstanding that are not part of what I have already mentioned I have?

@induktio If you want to know the internals, read TeX by Topic.
@induktio It's drier than the TeXbook, but straight to the point.

@egreg @induktio and reading the source of latex (source2e) which has examples of pretty much all tex features somewhere.

@egreg By Victor Eijkhout correct?
@DavidCarlisle Is this the correct link to the source you mentioned? tug.org/texlive/Contents/live/texmf-dist/doc/latex/base/…

@induktio Yes, if you have TeX Live, just do texdoc texbytopic; or you can download it from texdoc.net, just type texbytopic in the top search box; the same for source2e

9:25 AM
@egreg Excellent! Thanks for the tips and advice :) Out of curiosity...just how many Knuth reward checks do you have? haha

@induktio Just one.

@egreg I saw you had 0x$1.00 (at least since 2006). I've managed to accrue 0x$5.20, but it was for somewhat trivial stuff I'm afraid.

@induktio yes although it is part of the core latex distribution so you will have it already eg texdoc source2e

@egreg You might chuckle at this (or at least find it somewhat amusing). I kind of "laminated" my three Knuth reward checks on the cover of my hardback version of the TeXbook.

@induktio :)

9:33 AM
@induktio have you seen the picture of Frank's cheques?

@DavidCarlisle Thanks for the pointer. I'm looking forward to checking out these two different sources of TeX knowledge.
@DavidCarlisle Yes!! That is such a beautiful picture. It's a shame the chariots are no more. Sob. :(

9:58 AM
@Johannes_B: Some stuff for you: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/230397/… ;-)

10:43 AM
Interesting question: Why does a miktex user think it is the mathtools maintainers problem that miktex has mh/mathtools problems? I don't really see the connection here.

11:33 AM
@daleif Link?

11:46 AM
@JosephWright private email. See the many questions here on the site about miktex users and the former mh package.. I'm not sure why their package repos/list does not automatically update.

@daleif Ah
@daleif MiKTeX and package updates is a regular issue: also the admin/non-admin stuff
@daleif Are you going to the TUG meeting?

@JosephWright I know, one of the reasons we (DK-TUG) tend to recommend TL for everyone.
@JosephWright Not sure.

@daleif Same here, same reasons

12:48 PM
@JosephWright you wouldn't like to refresh dropbox would you? :-)

1:10 PM
@DavidCarlisle Will do
@DavidCarlisle Should I mail LaTeX-L?

@yo' @yo "well, we've got an OPmac template by @wipet, but students seem to prefer LaTeX :-)". This is not exactly true. There are many tens of students theses done in my plain TeX template, but there are individual students which call for LaTeX. And today, I have 50 students in my TeX course (i.e anti-LaTeX course).

@JosephWright wait for one more yes:-)
@JosephWright yes
@wipet sad to hear you describe your own course as anti-latex, why be so negative?

yo'
1:38 PM
@DavidCarlisle I agree. And also, @wipet, they may have difficulties publishing in journals, one day.
@wipet Also, you're teaching stuff you develop, basically, that's quite different. If everybody had their own ABmac, it would be quite a mess. Also, needed to say, if every country had a pdfxyplain and pdfxylatex, it would be quite a mess. That all needs to be considered I think :-)
@JosephWright Have you got an idea why i don't get a package name with these error messages, please?
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!
! keyvalue error: "option-unknown"
!
! Unknown option 'auther' for package .
!
! See the keyvalue documentation for further information.
!
! For immediate help type H <return>.
!...............................................

@yo' The same as for any generic keyval processor: at the point you get the error, l3keys doesn't know where the keys 'come from'. In siunitx I provide a custom unknown key to cover this.

yo'
@JosephWright ah, so it cant put there the setkeys identifier (which is identical to the package name in my case)?

@yo' No

yo'
@JosephWright ok, thanks.

@yo' That's the common case but you can't assume it holds universally

1:49 PM
@JosephWright just got a Dropbox notification...

@DavidCarlisle Yes: will see if I can do the mail sometime this afternoon

@JosephWright Ok, thanks.

yo'
@JosephWright ok

@JosephWright ltnews is showing the old syntax without \EndIncludeRelease?

@DavidCarlisle Did this get changed?
@DavidCarlisle The doc I mean

2:05 PM
@DavidCarlisle Because LaTeX is bad idea how to use TeX. I wrote some arguments in my article "Why I don't like LaTeX" petr.olsak.net/ftp/olsak/bulletin/nolatex.pdf from 1997. This article is only in Czech (maybe google translate helps). Unfortunately, this bad idea is most common way how to use TeX.

@DavidCarlisle Fixed

@yo' You are wrong. Nobody needs to write his own ABmac because OPmac is here. And there is no need to generate pdfxyplain because pdfcsplain is multilingual. The name "cs" is here only for historical reason.

@JosephWright thanks
@wipet I know that's your view, you put it in your profile here for one thing. You choose not to use latex, but that's not the same as describing your course as "anti-latex" rather than just saying it is an opmac course.

yo'
@wipet nobody needs to write OPmac since LaTeX is here. Sorry, it's the very same argument :-/ Anyways, mail'll on the way later today, the first alpha version is almost ready.

@yo' I have no problem with publishing in journals because the author-level is something different than full usage of TeX. And if I look into the macro code of many journals templates I am very sad.

2:13 PM
@wipet No argument with that last statement:-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle Indeed. But OPmac nor LaTeX nor even DEK can change this.

@yo' but after your tug 2015 lecture a new era shall dawn and @yo' will be seen as the saviour of journal publishers. Or something.

yo'
@DavidCarlisle not really, I just wanna give some insight from all three sites of the process (class developer, journal typesetter and article author). You also realize that the goal of a thesis class is very different from the journal class.

@yo' well I'll blame you for all future bad journal styles, anyway.

Q: Relative Order of Overlays in Beamer

Heinrich OdyI am creating a presentation with beamer using relative overlays. When the order overlays should appear in is different from the order the tex code is parsed things become difficult (see e.g. relative overlays). First Part Consider the following example. It is not easy to understand the order...

Feature request?

yo'
2:18 PM
@JosephWright seems so, but I'm not 100% sure. I can comment in that sense, though. Should I?

@yo' I might

yo'
@JosephWright ok then :)

@JosephWright oh, I see! I have to commit the change to svn, not just change my local copy....

@DavidCarlisle :-)

@DavidCarlisle It is not opmac course. LaTeX was mentioned in one lecture (today), ConTeXt will mentioned in one lecture, OPmac in one half of lecture. The rest is only TeX and first quality of typography. I accept that my word about "anti-latex" was slight excessive.

2:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle Am working on mail

@wipet you are forgiven (but still you are wrong about latex:-)
@JosephWright guess what: Conflict discovered in file 'ltnews22.tex'.
:-)

@DavidCarlisle Indeed

@JosephWright yes sorry about that, seems that your fix was what I thought I'd checked in modulo white space.

@DavidCarlisle @yo is now working on the LaTeX template for theses at our university. And I will the supervisor. I hope that I'll not sad when I'll look into the macro code...

@wipet I expect you will take one look, realise it's latex, be converted and update opmac to say \errmessage{Sorry I was wrong, please use latex from now on}

2:40 PM
It seems that you know me:). Of course I included similar message in my apnum.tex macro:
\ifx\documentclass\undefined \else % please, don't remove this message
\message{SORRY, you are using LaTeX. I don't recommend this. Petr Olsak}\fi

yo'
@wipet it's LaTeX3 all over the place :)

The site asked me to tell I'm not a robot. I had to lie. ;-)
3

@JosephWright Nope. :( Any links for me? I'm very far from my workstation. :)

@wipet You don't mind LaTeX2.09 then :-)

@JosephWright Thank you. :) I'll take a closer look. I'll probably merge a lot of things, including stuff from dandelion and other private projects of mine. :)

2:45 PM
@wipet :-)

@wipet \let\documentclass\relax\input apnum ;-)

@DavidCarlisle Mail sent

@DavidCarlisle ^^ :)

@JosephWright and received. Looks good. Now we'll see who tries it...

@DavidCarlisle Hopefully at least a few of the usual suspects

2:59 PM
@yo' -- "wont" = "custom", "usual practice". (archaic, but then i was schooled in the "old school" manner.)

@JosephWright will you ping miktex (or tl for that matter) separately?

yo'
@barbarabeeton I googled it (in the "new school" manner. :D )

3:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle I guess I'd better
@DavidCarlisle Christian S. didn't reply to my earlier message via his website so I'm a bit stuck on that one

3:35 PM
@JosephWright still if we say it's there than at least he has warning, if he chooses not to respond that's his choice.

@DavidCarlisle Sent

@egreg This doesn't do what you want. Do you mean: \let\documentclass=\undefined \input apnum

4:07 PM
@wipet Yes, of course. Your position about LaTeX is much like closing the barn door after the horse has escaped. I find it much better trying to improve LaTeX coding than pretending it's not there.

@egreg Your first sentence is exactly true. But I really improved LaTeX because OPmac is something like LaTeX but with much better coding than original LaTeX.

@wipet Your last code about \eta assumes that \eta has been defined with \mathchardef. Using \let\etaorig\eta avoids this assumption.
@wipet We'll talk about this when you have added emulation of all LaTeX packages.

@egreg Most of LaTeX packages can be implemented by few lines of code. See OPmac-tricks www page.

@wipet Quite a bold statement. Maybe “some” would be better suited.

4:27 PM
@DavidCarlisle Some feedback already, as usual on the part we don't really want to talk about at the moment :-)

4:40 PM
@JosephWright I saw:-)

@PauloCereda Did you see tug.org/bursary/2015app.html?

yo'
@wipet Famous last statement :-)
And also, you can start, there's "only" 3307 of them :-)
[tohecz@toheshiba ~]$ locate .sty | grep 2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex | wc
   3307    3307  228275

@JosephWright Thanks for the link, I was in a hurry because of the registration process for the conference in Barcelona. Now I have more time to focus on TUG. :)

5:00 PM
@yo' writing few lines of TeX code, only If user needs it, is much more comfortable than searching if something is done in 3307 packages and hundreds thousands pages of documentation.

yo'
@wipet Yep, I know. But someone has needed all these 3307 packages, unless they wouldn't exist. And that's the point.

5:14 PM
@wipet, @yo': I am a duck learning TeX, yay! One day I'll be TeX-savvy duck like @JosephWright. :)

@PauloCereda Oh I just hack things until they work

@JosephWright <3

yo'
@JosephWright that's what we all do, no? :D

yo'
@PauloCereda Well, I am the "Engineer" here, I've got even a shiny certificate of this diagnosis, in two languages :)

5:20 PM
Spot the point at which I got within a day's rep cap of @GonzaloMedina

@yo' ooh

yo'
And before that I got one that say I'm "Blbec" (@David can be helpful here, should a translation be needed)

" Dummies

noun
jerk
blbec, trhnutí, vůl, škubnutí, smýknutí
idiot

5:37 PM
@yo' -- gosh, the only certificate i've got is for "International \TeX nocrat", signed by don knuth. but the dilbert sequence fits ...
@DavidCarlisle -- you left out "numbskull".

yo'
@barbarabeeton numbskull is what you're are if you get Bc. but don't get Mgr. or Ing., yeah

@DavidCarlisle I guess it will make its way to CTAN as well?
@ChristianHupfer I could think this is some kind of Let's try the functionality, let's see how the system works. At least i hope so.

yo'
6:02 PM
@JosephWright The recommended way of defining user-level macros by their name is using \cs_new:cpn { nameofmacro } { code }, right?

@Johannes_B: Guess what: I answered TikZ questions for the very first time :D The evil is strong in me

@ChristianHupfer Did so a few times by now.

@Johannes_B: Angeber :D

@ChristianHupfer My TikZ foo is ver very limited.
@ChristianHupfer We have Elke, she takes care of the TikZ stuff.

@PauloCereda: There is a daily limit of 30 votes, correct? I wonder how 27 days of February can produce 1041 votes ;-)

6:12 PM
@ChristianHupfer If you don't vote for enough questions. Otherwise, it's 40. :)

@PauloCereda: Ah, right... the 30/40 thingy. I thought Psmith does vote too ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Oh, ye of little faith. :)

yo'
@ChristianHupfer I suppose @PauloCereda has an automated prioritized queue of things for upvoting, that takes care of voting for enough Qs too etc. :-)

@yo': @PauloCereda is a bot ;-)
@PauloCereda: 3 .... 2 .... 1 .... booooooo or Oy! :-P

@ChristianHupfer oy
:)

6:19 PM
@PauloCereda: Faster than you :D

@ChristianHupfer boo :)

@PauloCereda: 5... 4...3....2....1 .... A good night.... ding ding ding

@ChristianHupfer Notlob?

@yo' Another one ;-)

Q: I am trying to draw this picture with latex

JohnathanI have recently presented statistics of breast cancer and made a powerpoint image: Please notice that the icons are not exactly the same (I was lucky enough to find similar icons with different colours). I was wondering if I could draw this with latex. I am writing my M.Sc. thesis. Thank you!

@PauloCereda: No, this is Ipswich of course.... I don't have to do this. I am a qualified brain surgeon....

6:23 PM
@ChristianHupfer Albatross!

@PauloCereda: By the way, where is the Holy British MP Inquisition... eh, @JosephWright ;-)

yo'
ok guys, gotta go dancing, see you later, and if not, have a nice weekend :-)

@yo': Dancing? ;-)

yo'
@ChristianHupfer Scottish country dancing, yeah :) every Friday, here in Paris

@yo'... hm... I would say you're in Paris then.... clever reasoning by me :D :D ;-) Have a lot of fun

6:29 PM
@ChristianHupfer thanks. Yes I am, for more 32 days (funny how you start counting when it's getting short). Bye

I've got 40 votes for flags per day currently ... does anybody have used that much votes on a single day?

6:44 PM
Arghhhhhhhh!:

@GonzaloMedina :-( Missed by one point. Sorry buddy.

@Johannes_B I urgently need to down-vote someone's answer ;-)

@GonzaloMedina we could all downvote you, if that would help?

@DavidCarlisle Help who? ;-)

@GonzaloMedina obviously we only have your best interests at heart

6:54 PM
@DavidCarlisle obviously!

Live long and prosper, Leonard Nimoy .... :-(

@Johannes_B as efficiently as the last update did.

@ChristianHupfer May he rest in peace. :(

2 hours later…
9:17 PM
@yo' Wow, that bug in that ear. You should have seen my face. Disgusted is really the right word.

@Johannes_B pushed blkarray to ctan

@DavidCarlisle Thanks you :-)

@Johannes_B Don't let @JosephWright know I managed, otherwise he might make me do the latex2e uploads in future.

@DavidCarlisle :-)

@DavidCarlisle: We won't tell @JosephWright what you've done ;-)
@Johannes_B: I think, the books question is off-topic, as the OP states he looks for books written in LaTeX on subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, etc....

Q: List of open source LaTeX books

ArturoIs there a list of open source LaTeX books? I've only found this books but I want to know if there is a list with more diversity as this has only mathematical books. I want to find open source books about physics, chemistry, electronics...

9:29 PM
@ChristianHupfer Well, he doesn't state that explicitely. That'why i asked.
@ChristianHupfer But i think, it will get closed soon.

@Johannes_B: His last sentence is clear enough, for me...
@Johannes_B: Yes, I feel the presence of the Close - Voter - Force ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Waiting for a reply will do no harm. There are about 5000 other questions to worry about:

@Johannes_B: I've not used my red Close-Voter-Light-Saber so far on that question ;-)

@ChristianHupfer That sounds dirty :-/

@Johannes_B: Oh I forgot, you are not a Star - Wars aficionado :-(

9:38 PM
@ChristianHupfer Never seen Star Wars, never seen Star Treck.

@Johannes_B: Oh man, you're missing 90 % of all hints in chat here, let alone all references to MP or Lord of the Rings ... how do you survive life then? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer It seems i am able to manage it quite well. Without space stuff. or other stuff.
@ChristianHupfer Funny thing is, at times there are standing guys of four different security agencies in our library.
Well, officially i am not involved with any Sicherheitsdienst. But still.

VtC as off-topic since the error was found by the OP?

Q: I encountered an 'errorUnknown graphics extension: .eps.'

Flying pigI tried to load an .eps picture, but an error occured, 'errorUnknown graphics extension: .eps.'. Please help me!

Why was this closed as off-topic? It's about books written using LaTeX for which the authors have made the source public. I think it's not off-topic.

Q: List of books written in LaTeX with the source available

ArturoIs there a list of open source LaTeX books? I've only found this books but I want to know if there is a list with more diversity as this has only mathematical books. I want to find open source books about physics, chemistry, electronics...

@Johannes_B: It seems, you have that question on your favorite list, as any other question about classicthesis or ill-designed templates ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Which question?

9:58 PM
@ChristianHupfer The point is science books, written in LaTeX, and with source made available by aithors. It's not clear to me why this is off-topic.

@Johannes_B: The .eps question you linked above

@ChristianHupfer Found using google.
@GonzaloMedina I still think, that the question is off topic, but i cannot give a clear reason for closing.

@GonzaloMedina: I can understand your objection. The question is on the edge, but the OP states that he don't want to learn LaTeX, just 'copy' code examples. It's not really about LaTeX itself

@ChristianHupfer He didn't say he wanted to copy code. He only stated that he was not going to take the source code as his model to learn LaTeX. He wants to see how people write books using LaTeX, and perhaps grab some ideas for his own work using LaTeX; that is about LaTeX itself, I think.

@GonzaloMedina But that was stated after most of the close votes had been cast.

10:08 PM
@Johannes_B Which is why (in my opinion) questions such as this one shouldn't be closed so soon, specially if the OP is reacting to comments.

@GonzaloMedina I was the last close voter, but not long ago:
37 mins ago, by Johannes_B
@ChristianHupfer Waiting for a reply will do no harm. There are about 5000 other questions to worry about:

@GonzaloMedina: Admitted, he did not write 'copy', but I still hold it off-topic. I have, however, no problem, if it would be reopened.
@GonzaloMedina: it's true, some questions might be closed too early, but the OP has been here a while already, so improving the post would have clearified right from the start

@ChristianHupfer Suggesting something to this to the OP in comments it's a better option than closing the question too soon; again, in my opinion.

10:24 PM
@ChristianHupfer -- the op did make some useful comments, which i've edited into the main text. i was going to vote to reopen, but the queue "shut me down" before that was allowed. it's not clear that i'll get another chance at that.

@barbarabeeton @GonzaloMedina: I voted for reopen, to give it a chance ... It's reopened now... Go ahead and find answers ;-)

@ChristianHupfer There's one already: tex.stackexchange.com/a/230536/3954

Should we make the books question and perhaps CW?

@GonzaloMedina: I've noticed it already

@PaulGessler I think so.

10:34 PM
@GonzaloMedina your comment is a good point. I will update my answer and clean up my comments there.

@PaulGessler OK. I'll delete my comment soon. Thanks.

@GonzaloMedina because either it's too broad or it's a dup of tex.stackexchange.com/questions/21861/… either way it ought to be closed.

@DavidCarlisle I don't know; the "beautiful typography examples" one is not specific about science. But I agree that it sounds close in spirit.

@PaulGessler Think so too.

@Johannes_B Honestly, I realized that it's good to watch some such videos if you wanna not panic in a really serious threatening situation like a car accident. I've got some training already, I (almost) failed some practical rescue exams, and it all was a good lesson.
@DavidCarlisle which is a dupe itself. I'm going to vote as TB, we'll see what happens. :)

was browsing amazing, and was looking at this $300 book. When I reviewed it on-line, the math is not even in Latex and it is ugly! Here is screen shot

yo'
@Nasser looks disguisting

The publisher is springer,. It is 2010 book ! amazon.com/… Why would Springer not use Latex?
$300 book also !
terrible looking math and text.
It says below, it is 1993 reprint. But latex existed in 1993? "Publisher: Springer; Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1993 edition (December 15, 2010)"

South Americans: Did you see expolatex.com?

@Nasser In 1993, LaTeX wasn't that widely used in Academia, even less in engineering physics.

@yo' are you doing the namedef{12345} one? :-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle yep
@David btw, how do you make a macro read \macro abc{def} as #1->abc and #2->def?

@yo' 6 of your 5 mins are up:-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle yep I know

@yo' \def\foo#1#{...} but I was assuming he could change his input to \caption{zz \ID{12345}}
@yo' oh @egreg just said same on site

yo'
@DavidCarlisle also, my approach will fail in \caption
How to you test \@ifnextchar{, please?

11:41 PM
@yo' also the OPs number is dangerously close to being too big for a \count
@yo' test for \bgroup

yo'
@DavidCarlisle that's true, but: not my fault :D

@yo' not if you \protect it

yo'
@DavidCarlisle so \protected\def?

@yo' or declarerobustcommand

yo'
@DavidCarlisle works well, thanks :)
now it should be fine :) @wipet might like me doing some plain :-)
his number is actually over \number\maxdimen, so he's screwed :D

11:56 PM
@yo' no you can go twice that but not 10 times, it, put a 0 on the end:-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle well, you can check what I did. He's fine now as long as all OIS have at least 4 digits :)

@yo' yes i saw:-) I suppose I should do some of that voting thing

@yo' The maximum number is 2^{31}–1=2147483647, \maxdimen is 2^{30}–2

yo'
@egreg ah ok, I wasn't aware of this, thanks.
