Hello friends!
I have a request: if any of you have access to this iopscience.iop.org/0305-4470/13/11/009/pdf/…, I would be eternally grateful to you.

@kan: I don't have access, but what should somebody do if he/she has access to it?

kan
@ChristianHupfer Allow me access to it! Like send me a copy? Oh wait, it opens here now, holy!

@kan: Well, your 'request' has nothing to do with TeX.SX, in my point of view ;-)

kan
@ChristianHupfer Yes! But, I was hoping for some help of sorts!
Anyway, thanks for trying!

@JosephWright,
Are you online?

@NisalKevinKotinkaduwa Yes

@JosephWright,
Thank you for the response. I just posted a question on Tex, and nobody has yet took it to any consideration. Could you please look at it if and only if you have got spare time?
@JosephWright,
http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/209987/how-may-i-write-the-following-text-and-generally-and-the-second-equation-on-on

@NisalKevinKotinkaduwa That was only 20 min ago!

@JosephWright,
I am sorry, I received the answer. I was in a hurry for I have to submit a paper.
I apologise for any trouble I cause.

@NisalKevinKotinkaduwa Remember questions are answered by volunteers: needing an answer in a few minutes is not really realistic

@JosephWright,
What you said was true and very logical. In all honesty, I did not realise it.
But next time I know I should wait.

8:12 AM
@EnthusiasticStudent Seems i was gone already, sorry. But it seems @HenriMenke was doing a good job.

9:59 AM
@DavidCarlisle: My talk is almost ready. It's basically 30 slides of cute pictures of ducks. :)
6

@PauloCereda like this?

@DavidCarlisle ewwww
You meanie.
@David: I hope @Nicola hits you on the head with an umbrella. :)

@PauloCereda from a newspaper article about a butcher having to take down his display after complaints from "townies" who don't like to know where their food came from:-)

@DavidCarlisle LOL

@PauloCereda but I have never heard of anyone eating a cricket playing duck, so you should be safe if you ever come to England

10:08 AM
@DavidCarlisle phew. :)

10:18 AM
@PauloCereda A saucepan or a sledgehammer might be better.

@egreg ooh a saucepan followed by some Boing! noise! :)

@PauloCereda On the other hand, I quite like the idea of @NicolaTalbot chasing after @DavidCarlisle swinging her umbrella.

10:40 AM

@DavidCarlisle Be careful at the meeting when @NicolaTalbot is around, especially if she's carrying an umbrella. And run as fast as you can if she has a saucepan.

@egreg not decided if I'll be there yet (and fear of a mugging may tip the balance into not going)

@DavidCarlisle You can ask Brent for protection.

11:08 AM
@Johannes_B: What about the mail you wanted to write to me... or somebody else? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I never specified when i'm writing this mail :-p

@Johannes_B: That's true... but it seemed to occupy you :-P

@ChristianHupfer I think the OP is talking about a Schmutzblatt de.academic.ru/dic.nsf/dewiki/1254482
@ChristianHupfer This OP tex.stackexchange.com/q/209993

@ChristianHupfer @LaRiFaRi I was confused as well. Seems to be just a blank page.

@LaRiFaRi: Yes, Schmutzblatt, Schmutztitel, something like that

11:12 AM
Nearly all questins by the user have been badly posted.

@Johannes_B: Nah, naughty Johannes, don't say that :D

@ChristianHupfer just checked my book shelf. German hard covers tend to put an absolutely blank page in front and back. No need for coding, though... English hardcovers put some short title (and adds on the last Schmutzblatt). Paper backs do not use it at all.

@Johannes_B: By the way: Congrats to your 3k rep ...

@ChristianHupfer Rep's not important

@Johannes_B Agreed, but it helps you to get access to some privileges and contribute even more to the site. :)

11:16 AM
@Johannes_B it's not important, so long as you have more of it than @egreg

@LaRiFaRi KOMA provides a whole lot of different things to put publisher, ducks and elephants on predefined placces, or put them whereever wanted. But without any further information its guesswork. It's up to the OP to give these information to us.

@Johannes_B: I second Paulo's comment... More voting is possible

@PauloCereda Contributing to 5 different places, plus sometimes on mailing lists. I think thats ok ;-)

@Johannes_B: The OP of that Schmutztitel question is obsessed by classicthesis... do I need to say more?

@ChristianHupfer i know. I wish Andre Miede would take a bit of his time and make the whole damn thing more robust.

11:19 AM
@Johannes_B <3

@Johannes_B: Perhaps he contributes to ten places :-P

@ChristianHupfer Not that i am aware of. The git-page of classicthesis is inactive.
@ChristianHupfer You got mail.

@Johannes_B: I know, Thunderbird delivered it right now ;-)
@Johannes_B: I can do it, but give me some days for it... the next stage of 'Fortbildung' is ahead. Did you forget to attach the file?

@Johannes_B not at all... thank you so much :)

@ChristianHupfer I started last evening and am on line 230.
@ChristianHupfer of a total of 1340 lines

11:31 AM
@Johannes_B: So I should wait, until you have a first 'complete' version?

@ChristianHupfer these 230 lines equal 3 pages of the printed book.

@DavidCarlisle: Hope you like the reference. :)

@Johannes_B: Well, send it as soon you wish to... I am occupied with a Physikarbeit :D

@ChristianHupfer Btw, if i were a physics teacher, i would show my students epic fail videos on a regular basis.
Would be even possible to have tests: »Look at the idiot. What has gone wrong? Whhich physical laws were in action that almost broke his neck?«

12:10 PM
@JosephWright: Ack? :)

Does someone has a spare upvote?

A: How to use pagenumbering in the document?

Johannes_B\pagenumbering{style} changes the appearance of \thepage to match style and resets the page count to one (\@one). This change in the page number can be noticed with the shipout of the next page, which is in fact the page currently typeset. Now, where to put the \pagenumbering command? A good ide...

@Johannes_B: Rep is not important, upvotes are not important ;-) Ooops, only 28 upvotes left today :D

Thanks
@ChristianHupfer Answer the unaswered tonight.
I am looking at old questions, marking dupes, ...
You might notice a new item in the close queue

@Johannes_B: And voting for close, which is 3k rep privilege :D

@ChristianHupfer ja ja ja ja, da hasde aber Recht.

Guys, check this update.
@percusse: Mark Wibrow is god. ^^

@egreg you think you can steal points from a picture answer with a useless environment like tabbing?

@DavidCarlisle Yes, of course.

@egreg well try and make a pumpkin with tabbing, so there!

1:48 PM
@DavidCarlisle And now there's a much friendlier interface. :P

@egreg not for me (site's gone?)

2:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle Some difficulties, it appears. Now it seems to work again

2:42 PM
@JosephWright Could you please blacklist now?

@tohecz Final rush?

@egreg 18 pieces only. I have a suspiction that lockstep have done some more today : )

@egreg l3, might have known

And it feels great that you're almost the only person on the front page :)

@DavidCarlisle Nice, isn't it?

Did the main site decide to go into maintenance right now?
I have a double comment, one part is out there, and the other one ...

@Johannes_B: Yes, obviously it is...

A helper puts together a titlepage like you linked, and then
starts the hard part: »I'd rather have *this* differently.«; »Can
you make *that* italic instead of bold?«; Please make up your
mind and ask »I want this, and exactly this; can somebody help me
achieve it?«.
@ChristianHupfer This is the second part of the comment to the flyleaf question.

@Johannes_B: I will look after that comment when TeX.SX is available again... It's in maintenance mode, according to the status blog. It looks like, that the whole network is down, not only TeX.SX!

@ChristianHupfer Regular maintenance, i am sure.
As long as its fixed for our event tonight.

4:28 PM
@ChristianHupfer I was watching a youtube video about a data center the other day. Meine Fresse!

\fraq :D :D
\fraggle ;-)

@Johannes_B begin{enumerate}... hm, I guess, that could be the error :D Ok, reading further: You gave an answer :D

@ChristianHupfer I have to admit that i have been struggling with \printbibliography a few times.

@Johannes_B: Why?

4:38 PM
@ChristianHupfer Toyp
@ChristianHupfer A friend had \usepackage[uft8]{inputenc} and got a file not found error.

@Johannes_B: ???

@ChristianHupfer Took me 15 minutes to question the red snake line uder uft.

@Johannes_B: Yes, it's not easy to recognize... My most frequent errors are omitted \( or \) ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Dump Great sound. TECHNO PARTY!

@Johannes_B: I have to enter the grades on the Physics examen sheets

4:43 PM
@ChristianHupfer Have fun.

@Johannes_B: That wasn't me... somebody else wrote and edited over and over again :D
@Johannes_B: I will have so :D

5:40 PM
I am pretty sure i once made something like \addsec and \addchap for the standard classes. I just can't find it.

A: Non numbered chapter* header issue

Johannes_BStarred chapters (and sections) don't get a number, nor a toc entry, nor a header. Problem is, the header is not cleared. You have to do that manually using \markboth{}{}. But from your example i can see that you want a toc entry and i think also a header. You could implement that. A KOMA class...

5:54 PM
@HenriMenke You could use a negative skip.
\setlength\abovecaptionskip{-10pt}
@ChristianHupfer Ping: Maintenance over.

6:10 PM
@DavidCarlisle Working l3build script for graphics in the next few minutes

@JosephWright ooh thanks, I knew Frank and I were right in arguing with ctan that you should be able to update stuff even if not listed in copyright field of the catalogue:-)

@DavidCarlisle Once we have l3build for LaTeX2e it might be easiest if we just say I do releases for all of the team stuff

@JosephWright done:-)
@JosephWright although actually if we can all run the build again we should get back to the state that any of us can build/update

@DavidCarlisle True
@DavidCarlisle I was thinking more that most big projects have a release manager
@DavidCarlisle For example, for expl3 I have a particular set of steps to do a release

@JosephWright yes but really it ought to be automated, manual build steps are scary, a release manager's job ought to be to make the decision to let it out, rather than be the only person who knows how to build it

6:23 PM
@DavidCarlisle Almost everything is automated nowadays, but you still have to write the announcement, handle the CTAN form and so on

@JosephWright yes sure, humans still have a place:-)

What's the benefit of using \environment .. \endenvironment instead of \begin{environment} .. \end{environment}? I think it's just because of the \@currenv (or something like that, I don't remember right now), which we don't wan't to be overwritten. Is that it?

@DavidCarlisle Script checked-in: please test :-)

@Manuel usually there's the disadvantage that it is not grouped, or for verbatim environments it doesn't work at all, but some environments that grab their body as a macro argument such as tabularx or ams alignments you need that form if you nest them in another environment definition
@JosephWright updating now..

This is a really wild guess, but i think you want the features defined in Non numbered chapter* header issueJohannes_B 33 mins ago

6:33 PM
@JosephWright so for graphics I directly use build in that directory or am i supposed to call from top level?
@JosephWright reading the top build.lua seems like it shoul ddo graphics as well, lets see...

@DavidCarlisle Currently only done in the graphics folder
@DavidCarlisle I'm working on all of this!

@JosephWright ok

@DavidCarlisle I'll do a top-level one once everything is working in each folder

$ texlua build.lua ctan
Installing dependency: ../../base
....

@DavidCarlisle Okey. By the way, out of curiosity, how does environ package grabs the argument? I thought of \def\somecommand#1\end#2{..} and then check if #2 is the environment we want and, in case not, grab until the next \end#2. But in that case it wouldn't work with \env .. \endenv. How does environ work? “roughly speaking”

6:37 PM
@Manuel that's exactly want it does (and ams align and tabularx the same) but the trick that allows it to be nested is that #2 has to be the environment name as used in teh document, that you want to grab to, so by using the \align \endalign form in nested contexts you don't change \@currenv so the grabber grabs the user document environment body and everything gets assembled correctly

@DavidCarlisle Try now

@DavidCarlisle Ahá! I had it in front of me but didn't thought of it.

@Johannes_B The distance is font size dependent because it is determined by \baselineskip. Thus a fixed negative distance won't work in every case.

@HenriMenke And a multiple of \baselineskip?

is there a log or debug where I can see why zip failed?

6:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle Did you read the 'notes'?
@DavidCarlisle l3build stops if the checks fails: you are expected to look at the diff files :-)

@JosephWright no I just typed texlua build.lua when you asked me to try :-)

@Johannes_B If I put \setlength\baselineskip{2\baselineskip} it will be fixed to the \baselineskip present at that point. Also things like \centering reset the \baselineskip.

@DavidCarlisle This is the business with the blank lines: you'll need to make a 'local change' to your .tlg files

@JosephWright oh OK would be clearer if it said "tests failed, zip stage skipped" or something, I thought it didn't like my cygwin zip
@JosephWright ok will do that and see if it gets to the end

@DavidCarlisle I can change that in l3build: I've noticed a few other minor things to fix
@DavidCarlisle Commit messages are there for a reason ;-)

6:57 PM
@JosephWright yes sir $ svn log base/build.lua|more read and digested:-)

@DavidCarlisle l3build updated

7:08 PM
@JosephWright hmm it got further (after I removed the lines) all tests passed in graphics now it's unpacking base again as far as I can see, actually I think we discussed that before and that's expected? anyway it's making color.pdf now

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I've not tried to optimise out some small repetitions
@DavidCarlisle We can probably improve on the deps system a bit

file matches zip file -- skipping
  adding: graphics/color.pdf    (in=191127) (out=189188) (deflated 1%)

@JosephWright my mental model is still somewhat coloured by the fact that I expect it to take an hour or so to unpack and several hours to typeset the doc, the fact that it's been faster than that for some time hasn't really changed my perception:-)

@DavidCarlisle The whole process for the LaTeX3 set is only about 10 minutes on my MacBook Pro, and that is a lot bigger than the LaTeX2e core
@DavidCarlisle And all of that runs the tests three times, of course (engine business)

@JosephWright yes well joking aside this seems to have worked, so thanks for that!

@DavidCarlisle Good

7:16 PM
@JosephWright we should see if it works in Germany...

@DavidCarlisle Just need to decide which .txt files to keep: I'd drop 00readme.txt and have README.txt, much the same as we do for expl3

@JosephWright well ctan really want README with no extension so perhaps we should give in and do that

@DavidCarlisle You slightly miss my point

@JosephWright apparently:-)
@JosephWright try again

@DavidCarlisle The script will remove extensions from any .txt files, so if we have README.txt in the repo it will turn into README in the upload
@DavidCarlisle For expl3, we do the same but the repo has README.md so GitHub knows it's in Markdown format

7:20 PM
@JosephWright do you want all files on ctan not to have .txt changes.txt manifest.txt etc?

@DavidCarlisle Well that's the pattern one sees in a lot of other open source things (often CHANGES, INSTALL and README)
@DavidCarlisle Can be adjusted

@JosephWright they are a pain on windows:-) the zip file it's just made doesn't have the text files at all?

@DavidCarlisle See notes again :-)

@JosephWright which notes where?

@DavidCarlisle I've only just added .txt to l3build, so you either need to grab l3build and install or add txtfiles = {"*.txt"} to the build.lua script
@DavidCarlisle The check-in ones

7:26 PM
@JosephWright svn log seems to imply what you said that teh files go in without extension

@DavidCarlisle Oops, sorry if that was not clear

@JosephWright but they have not gone in at all

@DavidCarlisle Like I say, only happens with a bang-up-to-date l3build

@JosephWright well i did an svn update in latex2e-public and experimental within the last few minutes

@DavidCarlisle Did you texlua build.lua install inside l3build?

7:28 PM
@JosephWright of course not:-)

@DavidCarlisle Slight issue here (to discuss) is that as the two repos are separate, I can't assume where l3build.lua is inside the new build.lua scripts so have to rely on kpsewhich.

@JosephWright weill try now (Frank just updated 00readme)

@DavidCarlisle OK

@JosephWright inside experimental/l3build ? (latex2e-public/l3build just has a config file)

@DavidCarlisle Yes

7:33 PM
@JosephWright ok thanks, rebuilding graphics

@DavidCarlisle Like I say, I can't assume a relationship between [LaTeX2e]/required/graphics and [LaTeX3]/l3build as the two square bracket parts depend on the end-user (in my case they are latex2-public and trunk, respectively)

@HenriMenke I menat something like ` \setlength\abovecaptionskip{-.3\baselineskip}`

@DavidCarlisle I get 00readme, changes and readme as extensionless files

@JosephWright environment variable to say where l3build is? and stop if it isn't set?
@JosephWright do you know if ctan serves them as text/plain if no extension (README is different as it is picked up by the ctan interface itself)

@DavidCarlisle Shows as a text file: see e.g. ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/beamer

7:41 PM
@JosephWright ok good
@JosephWright vvv
$ unzip -l  ../../build/distrib/ctan/graphics.zip | grep '/[^.]*$'
        0  11-01-2014 19:41   graphics/

    27732  11-01-2014 19:41   graphics/changes

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I've got a README.txt sitting around on my system from an earlier release pass (I think)

@JosephWright so basically it all works:-)

@DavidCarlisle Yes

8:30 PM
Or should i write a short answer explaining where the vertical space is coming from?

@Johannes_B No, it's not a dupe. Maybe there's another duplicate, it's a quite common error.

@egreg But the answer leads to the same solution. Maybe explaining thy the white space occurs, linking to the possible dupe and closing anyway?

@Johannes_B It's a different problem; the extra space appears where the figure environment is typed, not when the figure actually floats.

@egreg The problem/cause is different.
But it leads to \begin{figure}\centering\end{figure} as well.

@Johannes_B Exactly.
