@StefanKottwitz -- jolly good! could you be persuaded to write up something about your "nonstandard application" for tugboat? (i remember your mentioning this before -- that the superb quality of your documentation was what persuaded your employer to sponsor your attendance at the tug meeting last year. keep up the good work.)

1:04 AM
letting koma script calculate the div results in quite small margins :o ^
in two column mode, at least
not sure if I should go back to the default or if I don't know what's good for me

@GPhys Unto Nuggan?

7:41 AM
@Kurt Thank you for your answer! Those are the weights applied to the value of banks' assets before applying the 8% of regulatory capital requirement: for example, if a bank has a 100 € claim vs. a goverment rated below B-, it has to put apart 100€*150% (the weight)*8% = 12€ of capital (according to Basel II rules). P.S. = I'm Italian and female (Carla-tex), sorry for not having seen your message immediately!

7:52 AM
@CarLaTeX Welcome :-)

@Johannes_B Thank you :)

Q: Automatically resize tabular to avoid it being pushed to next page

zezolloContext My document has one title phrase and one table containing texts. I would like to have them both on one page. The table's content may change (sometimes more or less 2-or-3-lines-texts cells), but there are always 2 columns and 20 rows. I have put a minimal row height of 0.5 cm for reada...

@yo' You are the guy with patience, i am not. tex.stackexchange.com/questions/307243/…

yo'
@Johannes_B well, the OP (supposedly French) doesn't know their left and right :)

@yo' I ignored that. But now the supposedly MWE is even smaller.

@yo' That shrinking of table reminds me of that question where they shrink 200+ pages onto an A0 page.

yo'
8:39 AM
@Johannes_B Oh they have done it the wrong way (I hadn't checked the rev history)

2 hours later…
10:49 AM
@egreg Yay! Was there ice cream? :)

11:12 AM
@egreg: ^^ I am not sure this will work... :)

/me discovers advantage of defining page geometry before fancyhdr

@yo' Did you know that there is a special section that deals just with template support from the template site? Now we get this: latex-community.org/forum/…
@phell I hear scrlayer-scrpage is a good alternative to fancyhdr ;-)

@Johannes_B He asks why his MATLAB data is not imported in the online LaTeX environment?
scrpage sounds a bit familiar. I also read something about titleps.

@phell Your guess is as good as mine. The OP just claims that it is not working. I don't know if colored stuff coming from mcode is not working, or if, while trying to compile, dead moths arise from his notebook to tell him/her stories, or ... I don't know.
@phell scrpage is obsolete, hence scrlayer-scrpage. titleps is also an alternative, but i never used it so far.

@PauloCereda No, but a good “gnocco” at Nonantola. buonissimo.org/lericette/1454_Gnocco_fritto_alla_modenese

11:30 AM
Is there any advantage in collecting badges?

yo'
@phell yes, you can aim at 4 palindromes rather than only 1
@Johannes_B I gave the table guy a chance :) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/307247/…

@yo' I only know about saippuakivikauppias palindrome. I think it means soap seller in Finnish.

@yo' Imho, CVs have the same problem of using tabulars where a list would be much much more suited.

11:56 AM
@phell What are badges? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I meant those gold, silver and bronze things. :)

@phell Ah -- I got not many of them, so I can't talk about them actually ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Hee hee hee.
Would you say XeLaTeX is like a bleeding edge fork of pdflatex with more support for non-european languages?

yo'
@phell yeah, sort of. If bleeding means painful, then yes :-)

@phell Let's state this way: I answer unsexy questions about ToC and counters etc. There's not much potential to grab rep and badges for them

12:04 PM
I am considering updating the unofficial LaTeX template for our university thesis. It feels tricky to balance new options versus stability.

yo'
@phell it is tricky. (Been there, done that, still many issues unresolved, currently 15 open issues at github)

@phell Templates are the pain.
2

@Johannes_B Oh come on -- otherwise your Alter Ego 'Gundar The Template Hunter' would be out of work ;-) Completely redundant ;-)

@yo' Which choices did you find to be the hardest to make regarding the template?

yo'
@phell that's impossible to say. I've given a talk on the subject if you were interested

12:16 PM
@yo' That would indeed be interesting to read/hear/see.

Class file is like an older version of styles?

yo'
@phell no. Class is what you plug in \documentclass, it's the new thing.
"Styles" do not exist anymore, .sty files are packages

@yo' I learn so much in here. :)

yo'
@phell just please, forget my bad accent and bad speech in the talk, I hope it's comprehensible nonetheless

12:30 PM
@yo' I am just thankful something like this is existing. :)

yo'
@phell there's a paper to it in TUGboat, but I think the talk is better.

12:58 PM
One of the main annoyances with our unofficial template is that it is defined as A4 but printed in a smaller format typical for Swedish theses (169mm width and 239mm height) . That means the tables can be a bit hard to read.

yo'
@phell that's a disasterous approach

@yo' At least I think it is what happens. Or maybe students are using really small font sizes to fit the table into the smaller page format.

yo'
@phell I know I repeat myself, but:
1 min ago, by yo'
@phell that's a disasterous approach

@yo' I like you repeating instead of using more than one question or exclamation mark. :)

yo'
@phell All important has been said before :)
5 hours ago, by yo'
Where's my PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS banner when I need it?!

1:07 PM
@yo' Hee hee hee. I don't know if my solution is better. I rotate the table 90 degrees and lets it go over two pages.

yo'
@phell that's the reasonable approach. Then, fine-tune it so that it sits on an even and the following odd page. That way, it is visible at once

My adviser wanted me to just shrink the articles to fit but I don't feel convinced.

yo'
Note that some people consider typesetting tables in a slightly smaller font the way to go, and they typeset all tables like that. I don't object this as long as it's not too much smaller

Yes, a slightly smaller font size would be okay.

1:29 PM
@yo' I like how you use a separate file for things like choice of faculty and the meta data.

2:19 PM
@egreg ooh :)

yo'
@phell just a design choice, nothing more

2:39 PM
This one can be closed i guess? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/307292/…

Hi everybody
Could somebody have a look at this question, please: academia.stackexchange.com/q/68009/4092
It was suggested that it should be moved to TeX.SE, but I'm not convinced jet if this can/does happen by accident.

yo'
@MartinThoma I personally wouldn't move it, and IMHO this is a deliberate action, though I have no idea how it was done

@yo' Thank you very much.

never mind.

yo'
@Johannes_B I've seen that one

2:50 PM
@yo' To be honest, i find the question rather strange. Though usually, the author of the question is a quite cool guy.

yo'
@Johannes_B :D

@yo' For me, this is like asking for a device that shoots live ammo at glass bottles and marshmallows at living things.
Stupidity can't be bullet proof.

@Johannes: quack from the duck to the penguin!

@PauloCereda quack quack

@Johannes_B we birds have a nice union. :)

3:06 PM
@PauloCereda But i have to say, i feel a little bit sorry that my ancestors forgot to keep up their flying skills. A well, swimming is fun too.

@Johannes_B Ducks are terrible in grass. :)

@PauloCereda I was in the woods on friday and a duck was scared of me and flew away. He didn't even care about all the branches and wing-boxed them right off the tree. That duck didn't care at all about grass. :-)

@Johannes_B Ducks are afraid of everything. :)

@PauloCereda What about bread crumbs?

@Johannes_B We are also gullable. :)

3:17 PM
@PauloCereda That one is really cool.

@Johannes_B I love that old Linux ad. :)
I use to love the boot screen when the lil' penguin appeared in the top part of my screen.
I was so eager to have a multicore processor so I could have the exact number of penguins equals to my cores.
:)

white-headed flightless steamer duck <= do you know that one @Paulo?

@Johannes_B No.. :(

@PauloCereda the article to the Falkland steamer duck, in lack of a better one. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falkland_steamer_duck

@Johannes_B oooh

yo'
4:01 PM
@Johannes_B I read "Falkland steamed duck" and thought that it's probably another German culinary special.

@yo' No, germans don't eat ducks.

yo'
@Johannes_B now pull the other leg!

@yo' :-)

I like how "Falklands" is known as "Malvinas" for us. And it is the Crown or Argentina?

4:35 PM
@David: hi!

@PauloCereda 'ello

@DavidCarlisle We were talking about British Overseas Territories. :)

I thought the boxes in fancyhdr header was making the text skip to a new line. Turns out I forgot I had manual line break to make the title look better...

@PauloCereda I think half the globe is coloured red isn't it? (or did that change recently)

@DavidCarlisle You gentlemen haven't colonised us, which is a shame.

4:40 PM
@PauloCereda we have plans... (beware men in tight trunks)

@DavidCarlisle LOL

5:06 PM
Are the margins calculated by koma script (div=calc) too small here? i.stack.imgur.com/tGg1L.jpg

For the last few weeks, tex-core and related tag questions have been modified and plopped up on the main site. There is also a Wikibook on TeX that needs some attention and one on LaTeX that needs even more attention. — Johannes_B 14 secs ago
@ChristianHupfer @yo' Sorry, i just had to.
@GPhys No.

5:27 PM
@Johannes_B not been rep capped for ages (im on 30:-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle seems you're as lazy busy as I am :-)

5:41 PM
@DavidCarlisle Oh, well ... i think you will get the necromancer blop anyway ;-)

@Johannes_B just the comment copied as an answer? or were you hoping for some opus on making different packages act on different parts of the document?

@DavidCarlisle Well, you can convert the comment to an an answer. But now you said opus, which will attract @egreg who will come along with a longer answer trying to steal the tick. :-)
@DavidCarlisle Honestly, the question/answer is so basic, i wouldn't even mind if the question got closed.

Hmm hmm...I use fancyhdr and after adding \part I get "Introduction" written as header on the first chapter page (it was correctly without header before adding \part). Do you think it can be related to misuse of pagestyle or that I need to redefine something?

@Johannes_B I put something

@DavidCarlisle I'll take a look.

5:48 PM
@phell misuse of something, not really any information to guess what:-)

@DavidCarlisle I will try to make a MWE. :)

6:01 PM
@Johannes_B Done

6:21 PM
@Johannes_B: Thanks for the 25th Zombie badge ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I did what? Listening to Scatman John? Yes, i do.

@Johannes_B You or somebody else upvoted my answer you asked me to do so... 'scribbling an answer' ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Yeah, i dod that. If i aask for an answer and the person answers, i leave an upvote. At least when i am notified.

@Johannes_B: One for you ... :-P

Q: Section command does not work

FridolinOk so I got kind of a weird problem. I have my Latex code, which works fine on my laptop, but doesn't on my friend's computer. We are both using Texmaker. The problem seems to be the section command, which gives me the error message: "Missing number, treated as zero" and "Illegal unit of measure ...

@Johannes_B: Titlesec and fancyhdr and KOMA ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Clearly missed to add titleps. :)

6:28 PM
@phell Of course -- well I am not fond of titlesec or KOMA at all. I don't use them any longer

@ChristianHupfer I'd rather listen to John Paul Larkin.

@Johannes_B To whom?
Unfortunately not consecutively (yet)

@ChristianHupfer 896 consecutive days :-)

@Johannes_B Only 842 at the moment -- well, I was a bit lazy in my early TeX.SX days ;-)

6:39 PM
@Johannes_B Ah ... he died some years ago, if I remember correctly?

@ChristianHupfer yes, in 1999.

@Johannes_B 1999 already? I thought it was in 2006 etc.

7:09 PM
@DavidCarlisle I found my error. I had forgot a \blankpages before the first chapter.
\newcommand{\clearemptydoublepage}{\blankpages}

7:34 PM
@ChristianHupfer VVVV

yo'
@egreg I should've denied you internet when you were here :p

@yo' I would not forgive you!

7:55 PM
My wife says I should write on my article and stop fiddling with headers and footers. But then I would go mental later!

yo'
8:12 PM
@egreg sounds like a plan

@phell sensible woman, your wife.

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I am very happy she chose me. :)

8:28 PM
@yo' ooooh

yo'
@PauloCereda don't worry, I won't do that to you in August <3

@yo' yay!

Is there something special with the header on the first bibliography page? I seem to get a default header added when I expect no header.

yo'
8:44 PM
@phell yeah, the bibliography's title is done in a very strange way

@yo' I also use babel but I think it only affects the name of bibliography.
Do you mean the title adds data that gets reflected in the header?
I think I might be on to something now...bibheadtitle.
Can the bibliography header be set by a bst file?
I got rid of the header! :)
\markboth{}{}

1 hour later…
10:22 PM
@phell normally the bibliography just uses \chapter or \section (depending on the class) and you get the normal header from that level section

@DavidCarlisle I just found a long re-definition in the class file:
\renewcommand{\@makechapterhead}

Scout nicknames know to be funny, I just wrote the sentence: "The participants are diverse, from Schnitzel to Spaghetti."
