@percusse LOLOLOLOL
We are a bunch of wacky people
I like that

1 hour later…
9:16 AM
CTAN scrreprt:
> The document layout of the class is more ‘calm’ than that of report,...
^ What does that even mean?

@wilx Well the layout is different

10:09 AM
@wilx IT MEANS THE HEADINGS DON'T SHOUT SO MUCH!!!
7

@DavidCarlisle Fun on the team list :)

@JosephWright all in agreement for once, it seems

@DavidCarlisle Indeed
@DavidCarlisle I'm pleased that my 'some change is a good thing' position is accepted ;-)
@DavidCarlisle On what @UlrikeFischer was saying yesterday, fits in with our 'What does a font encoding mean for a Unicode font?' discussions in some ways

@JosephWright yes especially when backed up with "the current situation is completely broken"

@DavidCarlisle We should probably get the work actually done ...

10:13 AM
@JosephWright that had occurred to me as well

@DavidCarlisle You or me?

@JosephWright they seem most likely possibilities. Also I might ping luaotfload again see if we can get a ctan release that works with luatex 1.0

@DavidCarlisle I wonder the tone of your commits at NAG. :)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, that's quite important: an 'official' mail I guess
@PauloCereda Probably not the systematic approach suggested by @percusse!

@JosephWright Ever the pragmatic, David. :)

10:16 AM
@DavidCarlisle OK, I'll have a look later today and I guess you will too

@PauloCereda commit -m "re engine:# some ticket number some text that gets mailed all over the company" :(

@DavidCarlisle oh

@PauloCereda well that's what I'm supposed to do, if you don't start with the ticket reference the log only goes to svn, and then you can say commit -m "oops" but it's considered bad form:-)

@DavidCarlisle :)

10:54 AM
@PauloCereda only 10?

@PauloCereda He can't spend dollars, you were meaning 10p, I guess.

@egreg :)

@PauloCereda That's all his advice is worth. :P

11:12 AM
@egreg oh that's mean :)

12:04 PM
@DavidCarlisle What does mean "We are considering adjusting the default encoding for lualatex and xelatex to be Unicode"? Why would luaotfload then break in texlive (which hasn't luatex 1.0 yet)?

@UlrikeFischer it has in my texlive:-)

12:35 PM
TV is broadcasting the arrival of the deceased athletes in the plane crash from Colombia. Seeing 50 coffins being removed from the Brazilian air force plane is a very shocking scene.

12:55 PM
@DavidCarlisle buuuu ;-)

1:31 PM
Hi @PaulGessler!

@PauloCereda Hi! It's been a while. :-)
Not too much TeXing time for me recently. Thank you @PauloCereda for the TeXmas card(s)!

1:47 PM
@PaulGessler <3

@PauloCereda It reminds me of this

@egreg Yes. :(

@PauloCereda That's for the “Grande Torino”

@egreg Yes, I learned about this tragic accident because of what happened here. They dedicated a TV documentary talking about the catastrophe. 1949?

@PauloCereda Yes, one of the best teams of all times

1:53 PM
@egreg: Palmeiras got green light for playing with Chapecoense's jersey in the last giornata.
@egreg So I heard. Basically, the entire basis of the Azzurra.

@PauloCereda They won the title in 46, 47, 48 and 49 (the last four games were played by juvenile teams)

@egreg Wow

@DavidCarlisle Me too :)

@egreg: you got spam. :)

@PauloCereda Valentino Mazzola is considered one of the best “number 10” of all times.

2:03 PM
@egreg I've heard of him, my dad once told he was a superb player. Our Mazzola got his nickname because of him.

@DavidCarlisle Oh. :D

@wilx Also, as the author is German, that is as much anarquy as we can expect. :)

@PauloCereda :)

@PauloCereda And his son Sandro was a very good player, even if he played for Inter. ;-)

@egreg :)

2 hours later…
3:48 PM
@Zarko I can maybe understand why you and the others voted to delete this post, but may I suggest writing a more appropriate comment, instead of using one of the standard ones? I mean, the answer is by the OP, saying "I solved my problem like this", and in that light your comment doesn't fit at all, IMO.

4:18 PM
@TorbjørnT. , recently I voted few questions to be deleted and give standard comment, that they was solved by comments. I estimated that all relevant information was in comments. In future I will try to give more information, why I voting to delete or simple skip such voting.

4:33 PM
@Zarko If a question is answered by comments, i think the users providing the information can write up an answer. Or find a duplicate to close the question.

5:33 PM
@JosephWright just running the test suite again (before I break it:-)

1 hour later…
6:43 PM
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{footmisx}

\end{document}
^ Is the footmisx package broken?

@wilx footmisc?

l.30       R
            obin Fairbairns

@DavidCarlisle Yes, that is what I get.
@TorbjørnT. No.

@egreg's speciality: missing %

@wilx Sorry, didn't show up in my first search.

6:46 PM
@wilx odd it's dated yesterday who updated it?

@DavidCarlisle It is a new package.

@wilx so i see in the ctan announcement not at all clear in the package which still claims to be by Robin anyway it has a github page do you want to add an issue or should I?

@DavidCarlisle I tried, the GitHub URL gives me 404.

@DavidCarlisle Cool. This works.

6:55 PM
@wilx unlike the package:-)

folks, can anyone help with this one?
For some reason I'm getting the fonts "F47" and "F95" not embedded in the pdf
But this goes away if I build in linux instead of windows

@DavidCarlisle Good plan

(texlive 2015 vs miktex)

@EmilioPisanty they are type3 (which I think are always embedded) but why are you getting type3 (most likely bitmap) fonts?

@DavidCarlisle I have no idea
that's my phd thesis, so it's a bit of a bulky document

7:03 PM
@PauloCereda ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

and it'll be a fair bit of work to trim that down to a MWE
did I beat @PauloCereda to the punch?

@EmilioPisanty we have a running gag in chat that @PauloCereda's thesis is still on page 1 (or sometimes he claims he's got past that:-)

well, it quite often felt like that to me

@EmilioPisanty pdftex?

also, it was actually true for a pretty long time
@DavidCarlisle pdflatex
or, yeah, pdftex

7:08 PM
@EmilioPisanty so at the end of the log it will show the font files it's using, or actually simpler if you compare the list that you get from pdffonts on the pdfs made from the two versions and see the difference, I would guess your windows setup is missing a map file so some font is using the bitmap pk fonts rather than type1 versions

@DavidCarlisle no pdffonts on windows

@EmilioPisanty copy the pdf to linux:-)
@EmilioPisanty personally I use the cygwin texlive on windows so I have all the utilities available

@EmilioPisanty Almost surely the standard problem with CM-Super and MiKTeX.

ah our miktex expert just arrived, i defer to @egreg

@DavidCarlisle Since I never used it, I'm an expert, at least in avoiding it.

7:11 PM
Any way to alphabetize pdffonts output?

@egreg you've used it twice as much as I have.
@EmilioPisanty pdffonts file.pdf | sort ?
@egeg so do we have a pointer on how to add cm-super to miktex?

@DavidCarlisle no joy, fonts have some random-looking prefix

@JosephWright oh flip we'd get diffs for every box output, force encoding default back to OT1 in test2e?

VDABDU+CairoFont-0-0

@EmilioPisanty yes ignore the prefix that's just a random string so that generated subsets have unique names

7:16 PM
but weirdly enough neither F47 nor F95 show up on pdffonts
@DavidCarlisle sure, but it means sort doesn't work

@EmilioPisanty ah Ok yes:-)

hang on, I think I've found them
Two Type 3 fonts
name [none], encoding Custom
pdffonts says they are embedded
no random prefix

@EmilioPisanty if it is cm-super that you are missing see this miktex answer here

A: How do I invoke cm-super?

DebashishThanks to all these discussions in this site. I was really facing troubles in removing the type-3 fonts generated in the pdf because of PStricks codes. Ultimately I could get rid of these problems after installing the cm-Super package. I would like to share the steps which I followed for my Mikte...

@DavidCarlisle how do I tell if it's a cm-super problem?

@EmilioPisanty @egreg suggested it:-) er well I hoped that you could see the unix one had two type1 fonts called something like sxrxxxx which come from cm-super and the miktex one didn't.... but font names are a bit obscure:-)

7:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle I can't quite compare the font lists yet

7:37 PM
@DavidCarlisle no such cm-super font on the linux log file
Maybe it's an issue with MnSymbol?
the linux log file has this:
 </usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/fonts/type1/public/mnsymbol/MnSymbol10.pfb>
 {/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/fonts/enc/dvips/mnsymbol/MnSymbolA.enc}
the windows log file has this:
 <C:\Users\episanty\AppData\Local\MiKTeX\2.9\fonts\pk\ljfour\public\mnsymbol\dpi657\MnSymbolA10.pk>
 <C:\Users\episanty\AppData\Local\MiKTeX\2.9\fonts\pk\ljfour\public\mnsymbol\dpi600\MnSymbolA10.pk>

well there you are then:-)

so it's the change from .pfb to .pk?

I have never used miktex but you want to install type1 versions of the mnsymbol fints

@DavidCarlisle ok

@EmilioPisanty yes pfb is type1 pk (when converted to pdf) is type 3

7:41 PM
@DavidCarlisle damn, that was some tricky debugging
I got an email from the library saying they couldn't take my file because it had non-embedded fonts
and I was like
...
wasn't this explicitly meant to not be a problem?

@DavidCarlisle That of some l3build magic but I don't fancy that (too specific, etc.)

@JosephWright whichever though it does mean the new default isn't really tested, but I don't see any option if we want the test files to be mostly compatible

@DavidCarlisle Miktex is saying that the package is already installed.
and it doesn't show a lot of other options

@EmilioPisanty @UlrikeFischer any chance of some mikex help? ^^
@EmilioPisanty sorry I'm out now, you are down to miktex setup details.

(@UlrikeFischer long story short, the pdf file comes out with a bizarre F47 and F95 fonts, which disappear if I compile in linux over texlive. The log files show that the miktex build is using MnSymbolA10.pk instead of a .pfb file. I can't get the miktex package manager to do more than tell me that mnsymbol is already installed, though.)
@DavidCarlisle no worries, and thanks a bunch. I'd never have diagnosed this without your help.

7:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle We could set things up so one test has a before reading test2e and leaves the defaults alone

8:20 PM
@UlrikeFischer @DavidCarlisle Here it is MWE'd

Q: Miktex degrades MnSymbol fonts to type 3 fonts

E.P.I'm having some trouble getting Miktex to correctly include some fonts in my document. The document compiles correctly over linux (texlive 2015) but when I run it over windows (miktex 2.9) it turns the MnSymbol fonts into type 3 fonts. This caused the library to reject the file for my PhD thesis ...

@JosephWright yes I'll see what I can do, got to get the <latexrelease> dance set up first

@DavidCarlisle Have fun
@DavidCarlisle I'm tidying up post-commit mails

9:01 PM
Right, the usual problem: we have good questions with no answers

9:15 PM
@UlrikeFischer Is tex.stackexchange.com/questions/269811/… still true with MiKTeX?

9:31 PM
@JosephWright MWE works fine for me with a MiKTeX install
@JosephWright sourceforge.net/p/miktex/bugs/2442 seems to be the relevant bug

@DaiBowen OK, closed
BTW, I'm working away picking stuff off with the 'mod hammer'
@DavidCarlisle Did you read Frank's new text for latex-project.org/bugs?

@JosephWright Back from the theater, seeing all sorts of pings ... The answer is no, document compiles fine.

@UlrikeFischer OK, what to do about tex.stackexchange.com/questions/268815/…? A one-line answer, a dupe, ...?

@EmilioPisanty @DavidCarlisle looks as if solved it without me. But for the future: if there problems with bitmaps in miktex run first updmap, and if this doesn't help check the font list in the log to identify the font.

@UlrikeFischer interesting, thanks
I guess the broader issue is that this is relatively undocumented / hard to search for / I didn't know what to search for
(but, if the latter, I think it does raise the question of what your average user will do in such a situation)

9:47 PM
@JosephWright The question is imho bad (no MWE, no error message). I would close it as too localized.

@UlrikeFischer OK, 'unclear' it is then

@UlrikeFischer thanks, sorry to ping you really:-)
@EmilioPisanty you have a different name on the main site?
@JosephWright I broke something:(

@DavidCarlisle Oh dear

@JosephWright probably not much but I may leave it till tomorrow, the reversion to OT1 doesn't "stick" something is flipping back to TU which is particularly bad in the test suite as the input path is sandboxed so it doesn't find luaotfload....

So, fonts question: As I understand it LaTeX and/or fontspec knows about some fonts and maps individual font variant files (bold, italic, etc.) so that an entry for fontspec is formed so that just using font by its base name uses all the correct .otf or .ttf files. Is this right?

@DavidCarlisle I go by Emilio Pisanty on the physics site & chat, and as E.P. most elsewhere on the SE network

10:55 PM
@wilx not checked all the details but basically I think fontspec is querying the otf font itself to determine available variants

@DavidCarlisle So, e.g., Vollkorn-Regular.otf is linking somehow to Vollkorn-Bold.otf for bold glyphs?

OT (see reason)

@wilx I just had a quick look at the sources but they're a bit opaque:-) certainly the macros have no knowledge of the font but not sure if it's taking the file name and just changing regular to bold or the internal font names/features and not inclined to look too hard this time of night:-)

@DavidCarlisle OK. No problem. I am just curious if "teaching" fontspec about the font permanently would be useful or at all possible. :)
