9:28 AM
@JosephWright did you get a 2e checkin email "increase float list" ?

yo'
@barbarabeeton Now please keep your fingers crossed :-)

10:05 AM
@yo' yaaaaay

yo'
@PauloCereda well, it can be either "yay" or "yuck" in the end, you know :-)
but certainly tastes yummy (well, at least the batters left in the bowls does :-) )

Hello!! I have written the following part of the code:

\noindent
Έστω $m=m_1 p^l$, όπου $p \nmid m_1$. Τότε \begin{equation*}t^m-1=t^{m_1p^l}-1=(t^{m_1}-1)^{p^l}.\end{equation*}

But I get an error "Undefined control sequence". What have I done wrong?

@MaryStar Which control sequence? I guess it's \nmid, for which you need amssymb
@MaryStar I seem to have seen that thing. ;-)
@MaryStar Oh, and don't use \noindent, but this is only style.

Do you mean that I should add the usepackage{amssymb} ?

When I don't use \noindent and when I leave a blank line, the first word of the next line starts more right than the other words, like when we start a new paragraph, but I just want to write a sentence in the next line. Is there an other command? @egreg

yo'
@MaryStar you don't want that; starting a new line and not starting a new paragraph is somethin only MS Word does.
In the borderline cases where you want to do that, for instance to write a postal address, you can use \\

10:22 AM
@MaryStar that is the meaning of a blank line, to be a paragraph separator. Don't use blank lines at other places, and never around displayed equations.

@MaryStar You do want that new paragraphs start with an indentation; typographers have been using it for five centuries.
@MaryStar And yes, you're missing \usepackage{amssymb}

yo'
10:40 AM
@PauloCereda taste: ok. consistency: no so quite :-)

11:03 AM
Miracle! I found a cheap theory book to buy!

yo'
@PauloCereda Oh you don't have any Russian friends? :-)

@yo' ooh I see what you did there. <3

yo'
@PauloCereda :D

That's what I do, usually. But I always ask a friend who owns a professional printer to print the whole thingy, so I can read "offline".

yo'
@PauloCereda :)
Anyway, T minus 8 to departure. See you later!

11:13 AM
@yo' :) It's a book from Sipser. :)
@yo' See ya, Tom! <3

1 hour later…
12:23 PM
@yo' -- always, the best part of making cookies or brownies was licking the bowl (actually, cleaning up with one's fingers and licking them). how'd they turn out? (yummy as predicted, i hope.)

@barbarabeeton Definitely!

@barbarabeeton ooooh :)
I remember licking the spoon!
@egreg: Ciao! Any tour for today?

@yo' -- did you test with a toothpick before you took the pan out of the oven? ((clean) broomstraws work just as well.) if you stick the toothpick into the middle of what's being baked, and it comes out gummy, it's not done yet. then you need to bake it for a few more minutes, and try again, with a clean toothpick.

@PauloCereda Bad weather with thunderstorms around. :(

12:38 PM
@egreg Oh no!

@PauloCereda Maybe I'll go tomorrow.

@egreg Cool. :)

@PauloCereda Yes, tomorrow morning should be quite cool! Better wear a sweater!

@egreg How cold? :)

@PauloCereda 20 at 11am

12:49 PM
@egreg oooh cold. :)

@PauloCereda I'll wear the heavy jacket.

@DavidCarlisle YEs

@JosephWright yes I got it too in the end, not sure why I didn't get the mail back for ages, the later ltluatex checkin responded normally.

@DavidCarlisle Tests nearly working for babel

1:06 PM
@JosephWright I started to add a tex allocator for chunks but took it out because of the lua.name business, but reading it again I think probably a normal tex allocator just assigning a number is still useful, for use with the \directlua<16bitnumber> form, as the latter is now using \count263 not a lua count it's easy to make them cooperate.

3 hours later…
yo'
3:47 PM
@barbarabeeton I know this technique, but it has failed me this time :-(
@barbarabeeton In the end, we can conclude that the result is "messy but yummy" :-)

@yo' -- yummy is good. in your picture of it in the oven it wasn't clear that it was a two-level creation. that does make testing for "done" rather more difficult. what i suggest is to check (with a good oven thermometer) that the temperature control is accurate; often helps if you're trying to follow the recommended time in a recipe exactly. (oh, now i need to attack my own chocolate backup supply!)

yo'
@barbarabeeton well, there was the "bain-marie" or how's it called. And yes, it is difficult, if you add melted chocolate in one half and liquid coffee in the other half, and you don't have the right ingredients since they do not exist here...

@yo' -- substituting ingredients is indeed problematic. i can, however, assure you that "bain-marie" is international.

4:48 PM
Can anyone else get to tug.org right now?

@SeanAllred Nope, and not downforeveryoneorjustme.com/tug.org either.

@TorbjørnT. Oooh, forgot about that site. Thanks for the confirmation, anyway :)

@SeanAllred -- does seem to be down. (and putting a kink in my editing for the proceedings issue ... and we're almost done too!)

5:33 PM
@JosephWright No session tonight?

@egreg Eek, forgot to schedule it!

@JosephWright And I realized it just now!

Joseph Wright has added an event to this room's schedule.

@egreg I might ask for a 'once a month' option in the repeated event thing
Slightly at a tangent, how do people feel the site is working in terms of 'mod support'?

@JosephWright all the mods are rubbish?

5:36 PM
@DavidCarlisle Thanks ;-)

@JosephWright more seriously I guess you are down to just two in practice at the moment?

@DavidCarlisle All mods have been 'seen' within the last 5 days

@JosephWright I guess that Martin is working much behind the scenes.

@JosephWright oh Ok, maybe I wasn't looking. We see very little visible disputes that need mod resolution so I suppose main question is if you can handle the volume of merge/delete/spam requests that you need to do
@JosephWright was my luatex answer sufficiently non committal?

@DavidCarlisle Yes

6:02 PM
I'm mainly checking that everything looks OK to users :-)

@JosephWright You work mostly unseen, so that's good from a user perspective.

7:04 PM
@egreg -- getting a jump on the unanswered: tex.stackexchange.com/q/261265

@barbarabeeton I'll do something about that

This is an interesting site: ismycomputeronfire.com
:)

7:30 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- this one's yours: tex.stackexchange.com/q/252529

7:49 PM
@barbarabeeton As I say, the reason for the wrong size of the fences is quite mysterious.

@egreg -- good enough for me. upvoted. how would you like to take on this one? tex.stackexchange.com/q/265986 (brand new) i know i've seen an answer before, but @minus won't work in a search, and i've run out of other ideas. if you can find the dup, it would be useful in the "often referenced" list.

@barbarabeeton There's my answer to tex.stackexchange.com/questions/84465/raggedyleft-in-memoir where the topic is touched upon. But it's not really a duplicate, as far as I can see.

@TorbjørnT. All now closed

@egreg -- okay, true. then maybe just explaining that \@minus is an "internal" form equivalent to minus would be sufficient, with a small digression about why "internal" forms are used in latex (e.g., faster to parse since only one token)?

@JosephWright That was quick, thanks. This one looks like more or less a feature request, so OT?
