12:35 AM
@tohecz How was the exam? Went well?

4 hours later…
5:04 AM
Where should I insert the command \graphicspath? Would it be right to include immediately after the command \package{graphicx}?

1 hour later…
6:16 AM
@ShashankSawant That will work fine

7:08 AM
@HarishKumar the exam went OK, the afterparty went badly well, if you know what I mean :D

7:19 AM
Hi
Can't install the FontPro "package" as it aborts with "maketfm: command not found". Does anyone of you wizards have a clue why it won't find the file?
It's in the same folder but it does not fin it?! (Windows 7 btw)
@tohecz It should "IfYouWhatIMean.Jpeg". :P
*be

@henry what?

7:46 AM
If anyone would be willing to help with the cygwin problem for using FontPro, I made a thread here and would appreciate a visit.

3 hours later…
10:20 AM
@PauloCereda So, how was your airplane travel?

10:31 AM
@egreg like this I assume:
36
A: Draw an aircraft with Tikz

David CarlisleIt was suggested in chat http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/9482087#9482087 That picture mode would be the ideal tool for the job here: \documentclass{article} \begin{document} \begin{picture}(200,100) \put(30,40){\line(1,0){150}} \put(30,40){\line(0,1){60}} \put(30,100){\line(...

@DavidCarlisle I hope it was a full featured aircraft. But I'm sure yours is good as well.

Hi, I have another quick question. In general, what is the standard or more appropriate syntax for delimiters such as the absolute value?
I tried using \lvert and \rvert however, when it came to fractions, it is a bit too small.

@Jun-GooKwak you can use \bigl|...\bigr| or (if you don't tell @egreg) you can use automatic size \left| ...\right|

@DavidCarlisle Thank you once again.

@Jun-GooKwak The mathtools package provides \DeclarePairedDelimiter which is really handy (and avoids the wrong \left and \right)

10:39 AM
@egreg Thank you. Looking at this thread I can see why tex.stackexchange.com/questions/43008/absolute-value-symbols using \left and \right is technically the wrong syntax as well as making use of the \declarepairedlimiter

10:53 AM
Hi! A while ago I saw a question which involved highlighting a part of a ToC in beamer. The highlighting was done by changing the opacity of a part of the beamer frame. I can't find the questoin anymore so I'm trying my luck here: does anybody recall such an example? Involving opacity changes for the part of the slide highlighted by \only<number>?

@egreg Something along the lines of a sardine can. :)

@PauloCereda oh! :D

@PauloCereda Like my first travel from Chicago to Cedar Rapids on one of those small airplanes (25 places or so): there was a very large guy squeezed on his seat who appeared to be suffering for the whole flight. :)

@egreg Oh my! :) I suffered with the pressure during all flight.

@PauloCereda chewin' gums are ya friend ;)

11:07 AM
@PauloCereda Closed ears?

@egreg Headache as well. :(

@PauloCereda ah :(

@tohecz ooh. :) They gave me some candy. :)

@PauloCereda That's for lack of sleep, probably.

@PauloCereda gums are more useful than candy, the neverending jig movement helps equalize the pressures inside your head ;)

11:08 AM
@tohecz They could offer me brandy. :)
@egreg Quite possible.

@PauloCereda that's much worse idea than how it sounds

@tohecz :)

@PauloCereda so where are you now?

@tohecz Home. :)

@PauloCereda ah
and where have you gone by plane?

11:11 AM
@tohecz Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul.

Never mind, already found it.

@PauloCereda so you went there by plane and soon back?

@tohecz Yep, just two days. :)

@PauloCereda ah ok

@tohecz :)
@tohecz: How was your exam?

11:14 AM
omg
never in my life have i tried something as frustrating as uploading a paper to elsevier

@PauloCereda it was ok

you upload something to elsevier and later get an email that basically says "this is not how we want it. fix it." and you're alone trying to figure out how exactly you are to prepare the files. that's just useless and rude, nothing else.

@Christoph Have you seen their "automatic build system" where you submit your .tex file? That's something really scary.

@PauloCereda I think (!) I'm struggling with that right now

@Christoph Oh. My condolences.

11:24 AM
@PauloCereda Oh yeah, TeX Live 2009.

@TorbjørnT. Exactly. :)

What I have uploaded compiles now, but it's just everything thrown together. Fine for me, they'll manually create an abomination of that anyway. What's really annoying is that every time I "fix" something, they come up with yet another error I have apparently made, and after 3 attempts they start to ask for the opposite of what they wanted before

Stupid question maybe, but I've never figured out what engine they use. What engine do they use? Also, do they use the vanilla Charter package or some specialised thingy?
(Elsevier I mean)

just guessing: They use something specialized and tell the authors that they use a standard tex engine, just to generate maximum confusion. There's a lot of evidence for that.

Hahaha. :)
:(

11:35 AM
@henry pdftex in DVI-mode I think. I've only submitted one paper to an Elsevier journal, and that didn't take PDF-files at least, had to use EPS. Don't remember what the log said though. With Charter, are you thinking of the font? At least some of their journals use Gulliver (gerardunger.com/fontstore/store-gulliver.html)

@TorbjørnT. I see, thanks.
Yes I meant the font.
@TorbjørnT. Oh, yeah, Gulliver has some resemblance to Charter.

The next time I upload a revision I can generate an error and have a look at the log file

@henry Note the licensing though, that's a bit peculiar.

unless they accept my revision, but that's highly unlikely

Btw, if anyone of you here sucessfully installed FontPro on Windows, please take a look here: unix.stackexchange.com/questions/155992/…
I recall I installed the whole thing roughly 1.5 years ago, and it worked sort of flawlessly but I can't figure out what changed.

11:48 AM
@henry Windows got worse? :)

@PauloCereda Haha that is funny but *sadface.

@JosephWright What can I write in to the square brackets of \SI{1}[]{M}?
@JosephWright I would like to put in a tikzpicture there but do not succeed

Oo you can put an extra pair of [] in there? didn't know

woooo

@TorbjørnT. I did the same (we're now caught in an endless loop)

11:54 AM
@LaRiFaRi preunit is a unit to be typeset before the numerical value (most likely to be a currency). From the manual.

@TorbjørnT. Yes, I know. So I tried \text or \mbox to get a symbol in to there.
why does a tikzpicture not work in here, when it does work in normal text?
@TorbjørnT. I would have expected \SI{1}[\currencySymbolInTikZ]{M} to work

@PauloCereda i.stack.imgur.com/4yvGW.png Oh wow those are the PC and Mac guy!!!!1111eleven
@PauloCereda I just noticed. :)

@henry :)

@TorbjørnT. The error reads: "! Undefined control sequence.
\tikz@deactivatthings "

@PauloCereda :)

12:03 PM
@LaRiFaRi Yes I see. I the mean time, you could do \currencySymbol\SI{}{}

For those with iDevices, iOS 8 is out today. :) Not available for me yet.

@TorbjørnT. true. Thanks for your time anyway

Q: Persistent draw color when using \def

eiterormConsider the following MWE: \documentclass[11pt,tikz]{standalone} \usepackage{tikz} \usetikzlibrary{arrows} \def\mwe(#1)(#2);{ \begin{scope}[shift={(#1)},rotate={#2}] \draw[fill=white] (0,0) circle (1); \draw[-latex] (0,0) -- ++(30:1.5); \end{scope} } \begin{docume...

Did I actually find a bug?

12:18 PM
@eiterorm Yes it is related also to bug 310

@percusse Ah, interesting. Nice to know there is a simple workaround, though.

@eiterorm Probably at some point in the code they forgot \begingroup...\endgroup so the last fill color setting becomes persistent, arrows.meta is still not so mature.

@percusse At least the bug is known, so it should hopefully magically vanish in the future. ;-]

@eiterorm T.Tantau takes the bug reports very seriously. So yes definitely it will go away.
But unfortunately he takes them in batches so it might wait a bit.

12:33 PM
@percusse I wouldn't expect anything else. Pushing out a new version for every bugfix is unnecessary work.

Probably easiest question ever: how can I make sure \insertframenumber starts at 1 on the second slide rather than the first? \stepcounter{framenumber}{-1} doesnt work :(

@1010011010 Did you mean \setcounter?

Messing with the counter breaks something else. I can't find anything in the beamer.cls file either...

@percusse well, quite possibly, with their like 5th or 6th account ;)

I just need the content of \insertframenumber to be 1 at the second slide.

12:38 PM
@tohecz It's your fault. You drove him away with your complaints about the logo :P

@percusse TBH, it wasn't our first disagreement

@tohecz I remember

@percusse btw, got a microphone, and the noise level is soooooo bad

@tohecz Ambient noise or electronics?

@percusse I think both
it's a wireless headset

12:41 PM
@tohecz Well.... there you go :) Cover the mike with a cloth and record something. Then you can take an FFT and see whether it is electronics or not.

@percusse what exactly do you mean by "electronics"? I seem to be lost

@1010011010 \addtocounter{framenumber}{-1}

@percusse Fast Fourier Transform? :)

@PauloCereda yep, this

Free Fried Tortilla.

12:43 PM
@tohecz Some devices have implicit noise due to shitty hardware or soldering. In the spectrum it becomes visible. Otherwise you get a colored noise

Thanks Torbjørn.

@PauloCereda Didn't you watch Fast and Fourier 6?
2

@percusse LOL

@percusse well, it's shure, so I would suppose this wasn't the case

@tohecz Then it's your ears

12:45 PM
user image
2

@tohecz ?

@percusse btw, I get quite a change in the noise when I change the position of the antenna. (Remark: the antenna and the receiver are like 50cm apart

@PauloCereda Whiskers are FFT invariant apparently.

@percusse LOL things are getting worse. :)

@TorbjørnT. sorry, I pinged you by mistake in the deleted message

12:46 PM
@tohecz Ah, ok.

Electrical engineers meditate by contemplating V = IR. :)

@PauloCereda "Ohmmmmm"

@eiterorm exactly. :)

@eiterorm lol

@PauloCereda Meet the new you

12:52 PM
@percusse Oh my!

@PauloCereda don't worry, according to these figures, you're a twin with @percusse, just that he's much more pale, you at least get some colour tan!

@tohecz LOL

@percusse ^^ I get some 50Hz noise, probably a lot of it is caught from the air. I'll make a similar graph for my other microphone

@tohecz European AC frequency. Everytime you see 50Hz. check your power
seems like you don't have proper grounding on your plugs.

^^ the figure for my other microphone, with which I don't hear any noise

1:00 PM
-45 db

so while there's a 50Hz noise, it's obviously not the cause for the microphone being so bad
@percusse but it's not at a normal level at which I use it, at the level on this recording, any slightest sound makes a peak (with the second microphone, not necessarily with the first one)

@tohecz The new one has bass boost with equalizer

well, there's a low cut applied

@tohecz I don't think that is the reason, the second one is clearly eating up precision. Just cover the first mic with a thicker thing don't know the english for that.
And try again. You do have an AC noise though no matter what.
When amplified it will annoy people

@percusse I do, yeah
@percusse a towel?

1:11 PM
these things

@percusse Windcap?

@eiterorm or a pop filter
it's installed on the microphone
@percusse A test recording of the microphone with true levels: kmlinux.fjfi.cvut.cz/~hejdato1/temp/TOHE06_0003.wav (I can make a similar one with the other mic for comparison)

@tohecz Do you have some sort of a volume limiter or something?
It sounds strange indeed

@percusse it's switched off. I got one or two peaks in the recording tho
@percusse I'm really worried by the level of the noise. I'll simply return the microphone

@tohecz That would the easiest indeed. But I think there is a compatibility problem too. Maybe it's your computer trying to be smart. But better return it

1:17 PM
@percusse i record with TASCAM DR, if you mean this

@percusse Hooray for Windows' auto-gain?

@percusse return cost €6 for a €400 thing is indeed not bad if you're seriously unsatisfied
@eiterorm Win-what? :D

@tohecz Let's try something, I'm trying to find a video that starts with a snare drum

@tohecz I almost expected a bot to censor that word. =P

@tohecz Heeelloooooo! <3

1:19 PM
Ah remembered one
When you listen to it, do you hear it like exploding in a tunnel or a regular snare drum hit

@percusse I lost you. The problem has nothing to do with my PC since the PC is not connected to the apparatus
@PauloCereda fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I'm trying something work with me :)

@percusse sort-of inbetween, but speakers are really bad

@tohecz So how do you test your mics?

@percusse using a TASCAM recorder

1:26 PM
@tohecz From the digital input of it?

sorry, I gotta go or I piss off my mom

OK, don't tell her the mic is bad : P

@percusse analog (3.5TRS)

That might be one of the reasons

@percusse I don't think so: this is a recording of my standard mic (PG58): kmlinux.fjfi.cvut.cz/~hejdato1/temp/TOHE06_0005.wav
see you later

1:31 PM
@tohecz bye

@percusse sorry, didn't see your comment here: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/201659/…
robbed your code.

@LaRiFaRi No problem

1:47 PM
@percusse upvoted your answer, though :-)

@LaRiFaRi Thanks. But I mean it. It's my pleasure. See the logo in my profile :P

@percusse haha, you were that guy... I stumbled on the wtf... some days ago and did not remember you were promoting that.
most certainly steped on that via your profile...

@LaRiFaRi best license eva! :)

It really is.

1:58 PM
@PauloCereda TL;DR
It should be the duck dance though

@percusse ooh

2:16 PM
@PauloCereda: The mighty duck army ;-)

2:29 PM
@ChristianHupfer They don't look very military.

@tohecz nowhere much, @PauloCereda didn't even get out of the country:-)
@Christoph @henry last time I was there (as in inside the building, some years back) they didn't use tex at all, and had an in house tex-to-sgml convertor which took author supplied files and converted them, on a good day, if the markup is reasonable
@ChristianHupfer @henry tug.org/TUGboat/tb16-3/tb48raht.pdf

@DavidCarlisle Area of UK: 243610 km² (soon to be reduced); area of Brazil: 8515767 km²; ratio: 1/35

@DavidCarlisle: What was that link? -- Sorry, I am organizing a local meeting and getting mails from people missing the subscription deadline and now all want to be on the list :-(

@DavidCarlisle thanks for that info but that doesn't make their upload system (and guide) less frustrating - it just adds more "wtf!?" to it

@DavidCarlisle :)
@ChristianHupfer ooh!
@egreg :P

2:42 PM
@egreg: Are you sure, that Scotland will vote for independence? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Wait and see. The Scots are unpredictable.
@ChristianHupfer You used a German comma.

@egreg: Yes, I am proud of that :-P
@egreg: Oops I did it again:D

@ChristianHupfer The comma after “yes” is good. Next will be independence of the Black Forest.

I think it was ok to have a comma there in the last case, wasn't it?
ah

@Christoph Yes, it was. ;-)

2:48 PM
@egreg: I am the chairman of the BFINMP ... Black Forest Independence Movement Party ...

@ChristianHupfer A single word in German, of course.

@egreg: Number of members: 1 ;-)
@egreg: Schwarzwaldunabhängigkeitsbewegungspartei ...

omg

@ChristianHupfer :)
@ChristianHupfer The problem is making an acronym out of it.

@egreg: I will establish a committee for that

2:54 PM
we also have plans for saarbrücken, outlined here at 18:44:

http://youtu.be/QMfikGzn0ac?t=18m44s

@ChristianHupfer tugboat article on what elsevier do with tex files:-)

@Christoph: Saarbrücken will be expelled before its citizen can declare independence :-P

@egreg what's a km?

@DavidCarlisle: I see! I'll try to understand where I do come into this topic ;-)

@egreg, thanks for the MWE, I borrowed it from your answer for my (much simpler, of course) answer

2:57 PM
@DavidCarlisle You have to practice on underscores, though

@egreg oops I noticed that then forgot to fix it, \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} added :-)

@DavidCarlisle That's cheating.

@egreg I'll take that as a compliment

@DavidCarlisle Or a compliment.

@egreg ??

3:01 PM
@DavidCarlisle Cheater

1 min ago, by David Carlisle
@egreg I'll take that as a compliment

hi
everyone
@egreg
@DavidCarlisle
wassup

@subhamsoni Just joking

hmmm I didnt go through the messages above ;)
@egreg
I need a favor

@subhamsoni I caught one of the very infrequent typos @DavidCarlisle makes when he types.
@subhamsoni Here I am

3:09 PM
@egreg I don't know what you mean

A small puzzle: Which two chat users can be compared to those two guys:

I want to apply for companies like Google, Amazon, etc. I need to prepare my resume. I need help in that

@DavidCarlisle You're like me: I nvere mkae splling erors when tipyng.

A small hint: Both have more than 200k rep ;-)

@subhamsoni Not really expert in CV; there are several packages for making pretty ones, though.

3:11 PM
@ChristianHupfer I know I know I know!

@ChristianHupfer The books are even better than the movies.

@egreg I already have one with moderncv. But
I want to be outstanding

@Christian: Werner and Gonzalo! :)
woooooooohooooooo I win.

@egreg: That's a statement you can do for basically any movie based a book ;-)
@PauloCereda: Try again ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Note the “even”!

3:14 PM
anybody there!!!!

@egreg: Yes, even then (:-P) my statement holds :D

@subhamsoni A CV should be as simple as possible, but not simpler. ;-)

@subhamsoni If I may, try focusing more on the content itself than appearance. IMHO the simpler the better. Most companies usually process CV's automatically, extracting data from PDF, so layout doesn't even matter (they might even make the process worse). Content must be your top priority, not the layout.

so its automatic processing?
I didn't even know that -- wowwwwwwwwwww
awesome
that makes my job simpler

@PauloCereda: Unless it's some company for layout design, marketing and advertisment ;-)

3:16 PM
@subhamsoni Not all companies do that, but I worked on a similar project once. :)
@ChristianHupfer Indeed. :)

hmmm ok
anybody on stackoverflow?

@subhamsoni: As egreg and Paulo statet: KIS: keep it simple.

hmmm ok @ChristianHupfer
anyone at stackoverflow

@subhamsoni: In Germany there is a 'rule': The more refined the layout/graphics, the less knowledge/hard facts are behind it -- people try to hide behind visual appeal ;-)

ohh so @ChristianHupfer there must be less graphics?
right?

3:24 PM
@subhamsoni: I would say so, not too much colours, just a photograph of you, and straight layouting, at most two different font sizes (one for heading, one for inline) and just one font type, not a bunch of fonts
@subhamsoni: And certainly no Comic Sans font in the CV

what is comic sans font?

@ChristianHupfer Werner and Gonzalo?

@subhamsoni: If you don't know about Comic Sans, everything is alright ;-) The Universe is in balance then :D
@DavidCarlisle: Try again ;-)

hmmm \usepackage{libertine} will do?

@subhamsoni: That's a matter of personal taste, but libertine is more of classical appeal, like in an old novel ... no, I would not use it for a CV, but this is a personal statement from me.

3:30 PM
so which would like a professional font?

@ChristianHupfer Gonzalo and Werner?

@subhamsoni: There is no general rule on the font... there might be professional (expensive) fonts still not suited for a CV and free fonts which can be used. I am no expert in this.

Hi, I've a question. If you are making a mapping from unicode symbols to latex macros. Should 'MATHEMATICAL SCRIPT CAPITAL A' (U+1D49C) map to \mathcal{A} or to \mathscr{A} ?

@DavidCarlisle: Best of three guesses ;-)

@ChristianHupfer sorry I'm out of guesses, I give up
@Kasper yes :-)

3:34 PM
To both ? :P

@DavidCarlisle: I give you a hint: One of them gained his 200k rep recently only :-P

Because some fonts like Latin Modern, seem to have calligraphic symbols at that unicode point. But STIX has script symbols there.

@Kasper Unicode decided they were font variants of the same thing so (they claim) it's like asking if U+0041 is a roman or itailc A
@Kasper it's best if you try to use same mappings as everyone else (and the distinction between calligraphic and script has to be in markup somewhere not in the plain text) eg do what Will does in unicode-math or see the mappings in w3.org/2003/entities/2007xml/unicode.xml (which includes all Will's mappings) there is a thread on script/calligraphic on www-math I'll post a link
@Kasper some discussion in the thread starting lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-math/2014Jul/0024.html

so unicode-math maps it to \mathscr ? I guess that makes sense as the unicode symbol is called MATHEMATICAL SCRIPT ...
however, that means you don't have a unicode symbol for mathcal, which is used 10 times as often (at least from the thousand of question at stackexchange)

@Kasper See section 5.4.2 in the manual of unicode-math: \mathcal and \mathscr are by default synonyms, but can be split into two different categories.

3:48 PM
@Kasper I think if you only want one or the other you can use the font feature stuff to switch in calligraphic (if the font has both) harder is if you need both in same document. There was discussion earlier this year to see if there was any chance of getting the calligraphic alphabet added to unicode even now. But that would take time and even longer to get fonts updated so it's not clearly worth it

It is kind of strange, you would hope that unicode is an extension from what is possible, not a restriction

@Kasper you don't have a unicode symbol for lots of things but they get typeset anyway, you just need markup, so there is no problemhaving \mathscr{A} and \mathcal{A} and you can make U+1D49C map to either, or you can make it map always to \mathscr{A} but make \mathscr use a caligraphic or script font the unicode position is it's just like choosing between times roman and comic sans, you need to choose but the Unicode slot doesn't help decide.
@Kasper thread around here has more on this lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-math/2013Sep/0002.html

I don't know why frederic wang says: "only Asana Math and XITS Math have calligraphic scripts" in that discussion. To me it seems that Latin-Modern, Euler, Cambria Math, all have calligraphic symbols at U+1D49C
And so has TeX Gyre Pagella Math.
Only Asana Math and XITS seem to have script letters there.

4:03 PM
@Kasper The difference between calligraphic and script is somewhat vague. In XITS Math there are two different styles for the same code points.

But just using javascript/html, can I say to XITS, I want this variant ?

@Kasper You have to choose stylistic set 01, just like with any other font that provides stylistic sets
@Kasper With unicode-math you can call both variants, with different macros. With other software I don't know, but basically you're calling a different font.

The bitcoin questioin has got 1k views. Wow.

4:20 PM
@Johannes_B the more stupid drawing question the more attention it gets

@egreg ah it works !

@tohecz :-)

but I think XITS should change it. The default should be calligraphic as it used much more, and the other unicode fonts also put calligraphic letters in that unicode range.

@Johannes_B: Hello ;-)

@Kasper They are just variants of one another. They shouldn't have semantic difference (but people think otherwise, sometimes).

4:29 PM
@egreg I don't know a sigma algebra that is denoted as \mathscr ... ?
But maybe I just think mathscr is ugly. They are the way too overdressed sister of mathcal.

5:09 PM
check out this amazing clock with Bezier curves.
Amazing and in Javascript

5:28 PM
@percusse Is this a philosophical question? :-)

@JosephWright Yes I question his existence.
haha

@percusse Mesmerizing...

@Werner It gets better with the instructions, so intriguing

@percusse The continual animation is definitely intriguing!

5:49 PM
@percusse beautiful clock:

@Ohmyghost A clock with a beauty I guess

6:26 PM
@egreg a tick deservedly awarded for hashtag question, don't you agree?
@Kasper yes, (if browsers support that, Fred has some examples in the www-math thread)

@percusse Yes. it is correct. Bijintokei stands for pretty woman clock.

7:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle Did you try with an accented word in the text?

7:49 PM
@egreg oh I always use xetex for all my accented texts

@DavidCarlisle :P

Good MAEN;-)

@ChristianHupfer Sorry, i was already gone.
@ChristianHupfer how are you? Haven't seen you in a while.
