2 hours later…
7:21 AM
@Johannes_B: Beware, I will somewhat be in your region the next days ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Oh my :-)

7:38 AM
@ChristianHupfer I just missed some things in my last edit. If i re-edit, will this work?

@Johannes_B: You mean editing a post?

@ChristianHupfer Jeppp
@ChristianHupfer Someone already approved tex.stackexchange.com/questions/198462/…

@Johannes_B: It's approved, you can go ahead

@ChristianHupfer No, now it would be a minor edit.
@ChristianHupfer I also feel almost embarassed to get two rep points.

@Johannes_B: Let somebody else do it or leave a comment ;-)
@Johannes_B: Not about being embarrassed ;-)

7:45 AM
@ChristianHupfer :-D
@JosephWright @tohecz Why didn't the awarded badges go away with serial upvoting reversed thing? I still earn mortarboard.

@Johannes_B: serial upvoting?

@ChristianHupfer Two days ago i had 198+ which got reversed

@Johannes_B: Why?

@Johannes_B Badges don't work like that

@ChristianHupfer Someone/something upvoted all my answers within 5 minutes. That is not fair, so the system reverses things. See for example the Meta Q.

7:53 AM
@Johannes_B: Ok, that's too much profiling then... I had a similar incident some months ago, when suddly +90 or +100 rep. occured within three minutes, but it was not reversed then

@ChristianHupfer Might have been completely different users and all was just a coincidence.

@Johannes_B: In your case? Hm, depends on the age of the answers/questions. If many old posts are suddenly upvoted, it's probably serial upvoting
@Johannes_B: Wear the mortarboard badge with proud -- there are less than 300 users having it ;-)

@ChristianHupfer 27 upvotes -- more than half of @Johannes_B's answers -- in 2 minutes 41 seconds ...

@TorbjørnT.: Yes, I realized that -- definitely serial upvoting, no doubt

@ChristianHupfer It might have a coincidence in your case.
@TorbjørnT. I know you gave me that link a while ago, but how can i access this plain text rep page?
Need to write that on paper this time.

@TorbjørnT. Thanks :-)

@Johannes_B: No, I don't think so -- it were predominantly older answers by me, nothing very outstanding (as usual, by me :D )
@Johannes_B: I just wonder, who upvoted the strunk and white badge question on meta ;-) I mean the question, not the answer

@ChristianHupfer I don't know, but i like @percusse"s comment.

@Johannes_B: Ok, regarding the comment -- I know at least one user, who upvoted it :D

@ChristianHupfer Make it two ;-)

8:10 AM
@Johannes_B: Don't know what you mean :-P

@ChristianHupfer I asked for a minimal working example -> tex.stackexchange.com/posts/198468/revisions I could swear there was none.

@Johannes_B If a post is edited very quickly after posting it doesn't show up in the revision history.

@TorbjørnT. Thanks. It's friday so i thought ... :-)

@Johannes_B: Sorry, I can't follow that now... I am leaving for two days... No TeX.SX :-(
Have a nice time to all

@ChristianHupfer You to. Have a lot of fun.

8:20 AM
@percusse It's just offensive.

@Johannes_B: Going to the future parents-in-law ... no fun, believe me ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Get into the kitchen and cook, do the dishes .... That's what i do ;-)

@Johannes_B: I would readily do that, but my (future!) mother -in-law does not allow somebody else in her kitchen :D
So, I am off now

2 hours later…
10:18 AM
I am so, so, so sick right now. :(

@PauloCereda Sorry to hear it.

@PauloCereda sorry to hear that. Get well soon!

@egreg To be honest, it took a while for me to get sick this time. Everybody nearby was already sick but me. I blame the drought we are having in the country. :)
@PaulGessler Thank you, I will. :)

@PauloCereda Typical season flu?

@egreg It should be, but I suspect it's quite intense this time. In SP people are suffering way more than here.

10:33 AM
@Johannes_B badges are forever. So yes, it is possible to become mortarboard just by making a 2nd account and earning 15rep there so that you can upvote stuff :)

@PauloCereda I always do the vaccine against flu. Being in class during winter would make me not only a good target for infection, but also a good source for it.

@egreg however, they select couple month in advance couple kins of flu and you're vaccinated only against these. Quite often it happens that there's another dominant flu kin that people aren't vaccinated against.

@egreg Ah indeed. :) Sadly, I can't take flu shots due to my age (if I'm not mistaken, it's prohibited).

@PauloCereda what? I've been taking them since ever! (well, not literally, but surely since the age of 16 or so)

@PauloCereda Really? Strange laws indeed you have in Brazil.

10:38 AM
@tohecz, @egreg: I'm not sure, but I'll take a look. :) If not prohibited, it is at least highly discouraged.

@PauloCereda there's no reason for that. You only need to rest a bit after the shot, so it's good to make it Friday before a calm weekend
Well, I don't take it now because you have different stuff here and in France, so it would be a bit meaningless.

10:54 AM
@PauloCereda same in UK: only old people get a free flu jab
@PauloCereda all those unhealthy footballers you let into the country earlier?

@DavidCarlisle Not just old people: 'vulnerable' ones too

@JosephWright would @egreg get it for being old or for being vulnerable?

@DavidCarlisle I read somewhere that they prioritize kids, people over 60, people with respiratory problems and teachers, I guess.

@PauloCereda That's what happens here. And I'm in just one of the categories.

@egreg A teacher, of course. :)

11:04 AM
@PauloCereda Somebody would hint differently. :P

@egreg :)
@percusse: Another problem is the typical corny homograph latex the material often used in certain context that might give pleasure or skin rash depending on the one's self-respect. LOL

Well, the shot is not free here, but it costs like €8 for the vaccine and €10 for the application

hi guys
i have a serious problem with my tex installation. it stopped finding packages.

@Christoph you might need to give at least some clues if you want help:-) (what OS, what error message...

@David of course, just wanted to see if someone is awake first ;-)

openSUSE 13.1, error message is
File `ifsym.sty' not found.
same for siunitx when I comment out ifsym, probably others as well

11:14 AM
@Christoph and do you have that file?

I should. The exact same code compiled before, on this system. I looking or it, but I'm not sure if I'm looking in the right place

@Christoph What TeX distribution? A SUSE provided one or the TUG one?

with a standard texlive installation kpsexpand \$TEXINPUTS should tell you the place tex is looking, I get
$ kpsexpand \$TEXINPUTS
.:{/home/davidc/.texlive2014/texmf-config,/home/davidc/.texlive2014/texmf-var,/home/davidc/texmf,!!/usr/local/texlive/2014/texmf-config,!!/usr/local/texlive/2014/texmf-var,!!/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local,!!/usr/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist}/tex/{kpsewhich,generic,}//

pdflatex --version:
pdfTeX 3.1415926-2.5-1.40.14 (TeX Live 2013/TeX Live for SUSE Linux)

@Christoph Ah not the TUG one.

11:19 AM
kpsexpand:
.:{/users/christoph/texmf,!!/etc/texmf,!!/var/lib/texmf,!!/usr/local/share/texmf,!!/usr/share/texmf}/tex/{kpsewhich,generic,}//

$ sudo zypper install texlive-*
perhaps? :)

@Christoph so if your missing packages are under /usr/share/texmf/tex you probably need to rehash the file database (the !! means it does not search the filesystem each time) or if the missing packages are not there, you need to work out why they are missing:-)

it looks like my machine is actually supposed to use a remote tex installation, which it apparently doesn't see at all

1 hour later…
12:51 PM
it was a mount problem, sorry to bother you

@Christoph Do no worry at all, we are glad to help you. :) Nice to know you managed to solve the issue. :)

1:15 PM
@PauloCereda :)

1 hour later…
2:26 PM
btw. I got into following some MSE discussion. It seems that SE wants to promote posts, but this promotion shouldn't affect the votes. Yay! :)

Q: Prevent questions on Hot List from being upvoted by casual visitors (only rep is from association bonus)

DVKI have experienced this on a couple of sites (and I'm not the only one) : You look through the question list. You see a pretty bad (or at least not-so-good) question heavily upvoted. Or even worse, a very poor answer to a good question - upvoted to stratosphere. Or even worse, a very poor/inc...

Q: Impose a 24 hour voting freeze on questions being discussed on Meta

George StockerThe "Meta Effect" is well known. Not a week goes by where a valid question is asked on Meta, and Meta users flock to Stack Overflow to upvote or downvote that question. It's even getting to the point where the Meta effect is actively detrimental to welcoming new users to Meta. Because of that, ...

I don't understand why so many people get addicted to watching movies uploaded by this guy. One of his video is:

yumm yumm, that looks good. Was it done using Tikz?

@Nasser Watch it first before commenting. :-)

@Nasser PStricks I bet

@tohecz Watch it first. :-)

I'd like to learn Tikz, I am thinking of taking finite element course this fall, and can use tikz with my latex to make mesh drawings and grid and such.

4:08 PM
@cyanide-basedfood I'm gonna vomit

@tohecz You will get addicted, I believe.

@cyanide-basedfood no. /looking for IGNORE THIS CHANNEL button

Nobody know who the guy in those videos. It is still a mystery.

4:34 PM
@cyanide-basedfood it's probably "Garbage Collector"

any one here studies linear systems/control by any chance?

Is there a canonical answer for “run makeindex”?

Q: Trying to create Index, idx file created, ind file not created

Peter ZFirst, I have tried to create Index for a bigger document I am working on. But it did not work (latex compiled the tex file but .ind file was not created). Consequently, I have tried this simple file: \documentclass{article} \usepackage{makeidx} \makeindex \begin{document} Unimportant text Unimp...

@egreg it's close to this but its texmaker not studio... tex.stackexchange.com/questions/83906/how-we-should-make-index/…

4:49 PM
hi guys
been a long time talking to @DavidCarlisle @egreg @TorbjørnT.
how are you?

@DavidCarlisle Thanks
@subhamsoni Fine, thanks. Unfortunately, my holidays are ending.

holidays are ending. didnt get you

@subhamsoni Next Monday I'll be to work. :(

u are a professor? @egreg

@subhamsoni So it happens. ;-)

5:03 PM
Wow @egreg happy to hear. What is your speciality?

@subhamsoni I teach linear algebra and didactics of mathemetics.

Awesome. Just What I love. Mathematics is just awesome

@subhamsoni What are you doing?

@egreg I am pursuing my final year of graduation

@subhamsoni What field?

5:11 PM
Computer Science
@egreg is there any formula
to calculate the factors
of x^n
eqaution

@subhamsoni If x=p_1^{a_1}p_2^{a_2}...p_k^{a_k} is the factorization into primes, then the number of factors of x is (a_1+1)(a_2+1)...(a_k+1). For x^n it will be (na_1+1)(na_2+1)...(na_k+1)

no no I mean like ax^n+bx^n-1+....+k =0

@subhamsoni No, there's no general formula for solving algebraic equations.

Why is it so hard???? People struggle for x^3 itself itseems

@DavidCarlisle :-)

5:27 PM
@subhamsoni Because it is. ;-) A theorem by Abel, Ruffini and Galois states that it's impossible to have a formula in terms of radicals and rational operations on the coefficients for equations of degree 5 or more. There are formulas for degrees 5 and 6 in terms of elliptic functions.

So Stephen Fry is from Norfolk. Cool.

@subhamsoni oh I was just going to post this but egreg said it already:-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abel%E2%80%93Ruffini_theorem
@PauloCereda I think he had all the norfolk part erased and he's more Cambridge than anything now:-)

@DavidCarlisle LOL

@DavidCarlisle I thought he was a national treasure.

@FaheemMitha no we sold all those to pay off the national debt

5:33 PM
@DavidCarlisle you sold Stephen?
eso-pic doesn't play nice with scrlttr2. is that ok to ask on the site with an MWE?

6:02 PM
@FaheemMitha yes, why not?

6:43 PM
I am sick. :( /sob

@PauloCereda Hope you get better soon.

@FaheemMitha Thanks.

This may be an faq. Is there anything like a letter class that supports something like bib style references, like ([1] this is a letter dated xx-xx-xxxx)? The default letter class just had \encl.
Or should I ask on the site?

@FaheemMitha Why would you use a letter in the first place for such thing?

@PauloCereda well, the references references other letter, but in a bibtex sort of way.
So the references are not articles but other letters
I see I wrote something similar in 2011, but this was to use conventional bibtex with a letter class.
12
Q: Using BibTeX with letter class

Faheem MithaI'm trying to use BibTeX with a letter; I hope this is not too eccentric. The letter class doesn't have BibTeX support, though. I found Environment thebibliography undefined when using letter. However, the solution described does not work perfectly. The bibliography appears on its own page (in m...

6:56 PM
@FaheemMitha xr.

@PauloCereda Is that a package?
I see. Not exactly what I had in mind.

7:11 PM
@egreg: should I send something? guitex.org/home/it/forum/5-tex-e-latex/… :)

@PauloCereda tea with lemon you drink, right?

@tohecz That too. :)

@PauloCereda and strong brandy for desinfection? :D

@tohecz Nope to that one. :P

7:24 PM
@PauloCereda You should. I'll send mine soon.

@egreg I will try. I have to finish two papers, but I can add another one for a good cause. :)
If by any chance you guys need a keynote, by all means, do tell me. I can record one, or even join live.

1 hour later…
8:36 PM
Ok, seriously, i log in after ten hours and a rep +198?? what is going on?
@JosephWright ^ ^ ^
Logging off again, good night everybody

@Johannes_B I'm afraid you'll get another "Serial voting reversed". :(

@egreg: is there a deadline? :)

@PauloCereda Yes, Sunday, IIRC

@egreg Oh my! This Sunday?

@PauloCereda Yes.

8:43 PM
@egreg Oh no. :(

@egreg @Johannes_B This. If it happens 3rd time, I would inform the mods. Well, @Joseph seems to be aware, but you can always flag any of your posts in order to report such a strange thing. Because it really knows to be annoying :-/

@egreg: any average number of pages? :)

9:15 PM
@Johannes_B Don't worry, I suspect they'll get reversed again
@Johannes_B If, as I suspect, it's the same user as last time then I can send them a message asking politely that they don't do it :-)
@Johannes_B The funny thing is this is of course not your fault at all

@JosephWright nor mine. :)

@PauloCereda Indeed

9:36 PM
@PauloCereda Not that I know

@egreg Can I ask for some 'math typesetting' advice?

@JosephWright Of course!

@egreg I'm sorting out some lecture notes with a few formulas in them. Some of the values are averages, but I'm not really sure whether \bar or \overline is correct. For example, \bar{M}_{\mathrm{n}} seems to have a rather short bar.
@egreg What's the usual choice for 'average'?

@JosephWright I prefer \bar, as \overline{M} is too long. Physicists use \langle M\rangle. If you want a longer bar, there is something on the site; an answer by Hendrik Vogt, in particular.
34
Q: Can I get a \widebar without using the mathabx package?

Hendrik VogtOne can use \bar to put a bar over a letter in math mode, but often the bar isn't wide enough. An alternative is \overline, but this isn't an accent, so it doesn't take into account the skew of the letter. In the following example, the bar extends too far to the left: Now the mathabx package o...

@JosephWright I'm not @egreg :) but I generally choose \overline as long as it's a sort-of an "operator", and not really just another variable. This seems to be the case for averages.

9:43 PM
@egreg \langle M \rangle is something different :-) (Expectation value, not average)

@JosephWright Feynman used it for the average.

@egreg Possibly: I don't know enough of the detail of his work to comment (diagrams yes, equations no)
@tohecz That's what I'm wondering about
My particular issue is that I've got a case where one symbol used is \bar{\mathrm{DP}} or similar (stands for 'degree of polymerisation'): \bar really looks odd here

@JosephWright well, this is my preference. @egreg is correct that \overline misses italics correction, but this seems to be solved by the post he linked above. I would not use \bar x since then what do you do if you write: We have that $\overline{x+y} = \bar{x} + \bar{y} ?

@JosephWright Yes, in that case \overline or \widebar is necessary.

@egreg Indeed
@egreg I doubt my students will notice, but I'd like to try to get it right

9:55 PM
@JosephWright You can use Leo Liu's solution.

I've checked what IUPAC do: looks like \bar (pac.iupac.org/publications/pac/pdf/2009/pdf/8102x0351.pdf)

10:16 PM
@JosephWright looks like W@#$, Times, Arial and arggggghhhhhhhh
:D

10:32 PM
@tohecz I think @Joseph should smurf that. :)

10:43 PM
@PauloCereda :)
