A: Why do we use the Latex logo when referring to Latex in text?

Paulo CeredaThe almighty Knuth once said in the good book: [...] it's important to notice another thing about TeX's name: The E is out of kilter. This displaced E is a reminder that TeX is about typesetting, and it distinguishes TeX from other system names. In fact, TEX (pronounced tecks) is the admira...

And the unpublished part of this answer would be: if one gets annoyed by the way TeX logos are typeset in a document, he or she shouldn't be using TeX in the first place.

Good MAEN again

6:49 AM
@cgnieder I hate templates. Argh.
@tohecz That looks yummy.
@ChristianHupfer Good Morning

@Johannes_B: Good morning
@Johannes_B: How are you today?

@ChristianHupfer I am quite fine, thanks.
@ChristianHupfer And you?

@Johannes_B: I'm fine too, thanks

@ChristianHupfer Just hit play (bonfire - knife party) and now tackle the big problems of GoLaTeX and LaTeX-community.

@Johannes_B: What are the big problems there?

6:58 AM
@ChristianHupfer I guess there are non. But most users believe there problem is the biggest.

@Johannes_B: I see, those platforms have totally different users compared to TeX.SX! ;-)

@ChristianHupfer here at TeX.SX the users try to learn, because there are rewards involved.
@ChristianHupfer You said i was evil with my »Was ist daran nicht zu verstehen?« There are often users who apparently not only read linked material, they just ignore what a helper wrote. He seems to be one of those people not trying to help others to solve his problems.

@Johannes_B: Well, the core users learn (or teach ;-)), but there still many users completely beratungsresistent
@Johannes_B: Well, I meant it as a joke
@Johannes_B: But even a lot of badges or a reputation > 1000 does not guarantee a well-defined question/answer

@ChristianHupfer That's true.

@Johannes_B: Sometimes, I have the impression some users are like Vicky from Little Britain... "Yes,no, yes,no, but, no, very,cool" ;-)

7:13 AM
@Johannes_B the only problem is that there are so much bad templates... If there only were good templates there would be much less trouble with them. I need a new blog post on templates (this time in German)...
What's really annoying is that apparently latextemplates.com doesn't have a professional Qualitätskontrolle although the website gives the impression it did...

@cgnieder: I agree with you about templates...
@cgnieder: By the way, I admire your blog website ... very pro!

@ChristianHupfer a constant source of problems in (La)TeX forums... :)
@ChristianHupfer which one? :p

@cgnieder: The one you linked to in profile page here on TeX.SX!

@ChristianHupfer Ah! I forgot that I did that... Thanks!

@cgnieder: I don't know of other ones :-P

@cgnieder Even classicthesis is smurfed up.

@cgnieder, @Johannes_B: The problem is, that each university/department has their own conception of how documents should look like. In consequence, someone hacks a thesis template. But there are other templates, for other purposes, equally not very nice

@ChristianHupfer The problem ist not how it looks, but how things are implemented.

@Johannes_B: Yes, that's what I wanted to say...

After a real bad crash (tm) and having been an admin (on an RS/6000) for less than a month (honest it wasn't my fault, yea right stupid) we got to test our backup by doing:
# cd /
# rm -rf *
ohhhhhhhh sh*t i hope those tapes are good.

Ya know it's kinda funny (in a perverse way) to watch the system just slowly go away.

8:01 AM
@Johannes_B: Where do you get this? From HowToScrewUpMyRunningSystem.org ? ;-)

That reminds me, i should really do a backup.
@ChristianHupfer Look at the mail address of the guy. Looks perfect.

@Johannes_B: Der Name war Programm ;-)

Mr @ChristianHupfer be careful, i was drinking coffeee, almost made the whole desk coffee coated :-D

@Johannes_B... I am terribly sorry :D
@Johannes_B: Ok, admitted, that was a lie :-P

8:45 AM
@Johannes_B: The List of figures question was just deleted ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I just noticed as well.
@ChristianHupfer Questions remains: Why?

@Johannes_B: And cornelius tried to 'improve' the title :D

@ChristianHupfer What was the result?

@Johannes_B: You know me! :-P
@Johannes_B: What should LoC be... List of Chapters?, List of Contents, List of Changes, List of Cheap Thrills?

@ChristianHupfer Great edit. But the user doesn't see the reason to reject edits, right?
@ChristianHupfer Might be list of chapter, not sure.

8:52 AM
@Johannes_B: You mean the editing user? Well, he is notified about the rejection, see my question on meta about better suggested edits feedback meta.tex.stackexchange.com/questions/4441/…
@Johannes_B: A nice feature of being > 10k rep is now, that I can still see deleted posts

@ChristianHupfer There was a third comment i have never seen.

@Johannes_B: Which one do you mean?

@ChristianHupfer The LOF question we just talked about. I had the tab still open and it showed me »1 more comment« but since the Q is gone, i can't see/read it.

@Johannes_B: Guess from whom the comment came ;-)

@ChristianHupfer :-D
@ChristianHupfer I also like the fact, that someone made this a favourite.

8:58 AM
@Johannes_B: Guess who? To find it quickly... I could vote for undelete :D

@ChristianHupfer I wonder if there is a serious qustion out there addressing this topic.

@Johannes_B: All questions are serious ... but that might not be true for the poster ;-)

@ChristianHupfer You are a physicist, right? -> youtube.com/user/sixtysymbols

9:14 AM
@Johannes_B: Thanks for the link, I have no time to listen right now

9:41 AM
There is an edit spree going on :D

10:17 AM
@ChristianHupfer No one editor, though

@JosephWright @ChristianHupfer It's true. However, I feel bad, but still accept many of them, since the original post was relatively new (less than an hour old). How could we convince him to stop?

@JosephWright: Sometimes it's better to reject.

corneliusThe silver badge "Strunk & White" -- Edited 80 posts is referred to Questions or Questions/Answer? I've edited more than 80 posts (http://tex.stackexchange.com/users/56567/cornelius?tab=activity&sort=revisions), but I unearned this.

@ChristianHupfer Hello! :) I lost my internet for two hours, it almost drove me crazier. :)

@PauloCereda where did you find it?
@ChristianHupfer :-)

@percusse Behind the tree. :)
@percusse: now that you are here sir, can I ask a TikZ enlightment? :)

@PauloCereda Lemme open the manual first ;) Shoot it
Procrastinators; euclidthegame.com

@percusse Out of curiosity, is there a way to "hide" the line when crossing a word? writelatex.com/1384907ygfppw
An easy way. :P

@PauloCereda Easiest, fill with white

4:19 PM
@PauloCereda: Yet even crazier? ;-)

@percusse o.O Oh my!
@ChristianHupfer Of course. :)

@PauloCereda: That's impossible :-P

@percusse: sir, thank you! I got the idea! :)

@PauloCereda Done now. I am getting rusty

I'm so stoopid, I should have thought of this thingy before. :P
@percusse Gracias, sir. :)
@percusse: I'm writing a paper and one of the examples involves a duck. :)

4:25 PM
Journal of Ponds?

@PauloCereda: Written by Ducktor Paulo Cereda? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer just a humble candidate so far. :)
@percusse By Amy Pond.
Where are Doctor Who fans now?!
:)

@PauloCereda I am the Doctor

@PauloCereda: humble is a very ducktile term :D
@PauloCereda: I am just another Doctor ;-)

@ChristianHupfer someone mentioned ducks?

4:29 PM
@JosephWright ooh! :)
@JosephWright New season just started. :)
I think I'll like Peter Capaldi. :)

@tohecz: Guess who ;-)

@ChristianHupfer David, of course.

@PauloCereda: Nah, it's easy to blame others :D

@PauloCereda Yes, he's a good actor and a good choice for the role

@JosephWright Door? Boring. :)

@DavidCarlisle Thank you, it would have driven me crazy.

4:39 PM
@Johannes_B Mine has the info, in the log as expected :-)

I didn't even think of checking the log file.

And now let us star all those logs ;-)

@JosephWright Yes, it does, but i completely overlooked it.

@DavidCarlisle Technically, it's still him, because of the regeneration thingy. :)

Thanks a lot guys for spending time to help me.

Q: What are the most common mistakes that beginners of (La)TeX and Friends make?

cyanide-based foodI want to collect the most common mistakes, misconceptions, pitfalls, etc that (La)TeX and Friends users make. Please one answer for each mistake, misconception, pitfall, etc. I am only interested in more technical, objective cases rather than psychological, social, subjective cases. From this ...

Bounty?

@JosephWright: 43 answers -- do you think there will a new one, bringing more light into it? ;-)

@JosephWright Yep. :)
@Jubobs: oh my, you are working on a solarized version for TeX and friends? Woooohoooo!

can anyone help me figure out why my bibliography is only displaying ?'s (question marks) rather than resources, and the bibliography at the end is not showing
the answer on here is very complicated and short of reinstalling, I wouldn't know how to apply the knowledge

5:00 PM
@Daи Have your run LaTeX/BibTeX/LaTeX/LaTeX?
@Daи Or alternatively LaTeX/Biber/LaTeX if using biblatex and not using the backend=bibtex option

@Joseph: I've told David yesterday: I'm now addicted to QI. :)

@JosephWright I'm lost
According to that, I just need to have the bib file in the same folder, include it
and voila
magic
but no magic is happening
I don't mind even putting the book in the document itself (only one book to reference)
I just need this to work and be simple

@Daи Do you have faith? :) Belief is mandatory. :)
On a more serious note, could we take a look at your file? :) At least, the very end of it.

@PauloCereda haha
\bibliographystyle{plain}
\bibliography{lab1}
end of file
lab1.bib soon to follow
@book{PMA,

}

And \cite{PMA} gives you [?]?

5:14 PM
and in the document, I cite it: \cite{PMA}

I thought PMA = Principles of Mathematical Analysis, lol.

@PauloCereda yes

@Daи What OS and editor are you using right now?
If I remember correctly, TeXnic Center on Windows had some sort of hook that runs bibtex on every pdflatex run, I guess.
@JasperLoy: Hey Jasper! :)

@PauloCereda Mac OS X (downloaded MacTeX a year or two ago), using TeXShop to edit

@PauloCereda Hi! Do you know about Ubuntu Mate? It is going to become an official derivative soon...

5:16 PM
@JasperLoy Really? I only know MATE (but I prefer Cinammon). :)
@Daи hm I don't know about TeXShop. By chance, is there any .bbl file in the folder which has your .tex and .bib files?
@Joseph: I suspect TeXShop does not run bibtex automatically, does it?

@PauloCereda no
@PauloCereda what is a better editor I can use?

@Daи So you need to run bibtex. That's why your refs aren't appearing.
@Daи For Mac? I really have no idea (I'm have a spartan workflow for TeX and friends).

@Daи It's not about which editor is better. In this case, it is about what the default buttons do.

I'm far from my Mac machine, let me try to reach one of my laptops.

got it!
I just ran bibtex [aux file here]

5:23 PM
@Daи You can try out TeXworks with latexmk. See tex.stackexchange.com/questions/18936/… for example.

then ran latex again
and it worked
sweet
thanks guys!
I did even realize I needed to run anything again
that did it!

@Daи cool! :)

@PauloCereda I appreciate the help

@Daи Our pleasure. :)

Hi folks, is showing artificial weapons (toys for children) in the public space prohibited in your country?

5:50 PM
@cyanide-basedfood It's been a while since I saw a kid holding something along these lines in public areas, but I think they are not prohibited.
Actually, I stand corrected: some cities in Brazil have local laws that veto the manufacture of toy guns.

6:20 PM
@PauloCereda Thanks. :-)

@cyanide-basedfood My pleasure. :) I actually learned something new too. :)

@PauloCereda Omaha shot accident?

@cyanide-basedfood I meant about my own regional law. But I was shocked by the recent event. :(

@PauloCereda I see.

6:33 PM
@cyanide-basedfood showing is fine here. Pretending it's real is not.

@tohecz :-)

@cyanide-basedfood but really, it is so. There's no law forbidding it directly. But you're not allowed to cause serious fear

@tohecz How about doing a prank?

@cyanide-basedfood well, if you do a prank and someone takes it so seriously that something had happens, you're screwed

@tohecz :-)

7:18 PM
@cyanide-basedfood I once heard a story (no idea if it's true) where some people pretended a little war using soft air guns. Someone called the police and a whole SWAT team (well, the german equivalency) showed up.

@Johannes_B das SWAT. :)

@PauloCereda I lost 198 (or so) rep since yesterday.

@Johannes_B Oh my, why?

@PauloCereda Serial upvoting.
@PauloCereda I felt like @egreg with 180+ rep

7:41 PM
@Johannes_B well, you could have gotten Mortarboard

@tohecz May i ask what Mortarboard is?

@Johannes_B earned 200 rep a day (a badge here)

Q: Serial upvoting reversed

egregI've already asked about a similar situation, but this time the figures involved seem to be quite exaggerated: on my reputation page the following item appears: -4360 Serial upvoting reversed The other time the nullified votes were 63, this time 436, which is what a user can vote in eleven ...

7:54 PM
@Johannes: what CHAOS doesn't know is that I know how their algorithm works. :P

@PauloCereda :-)
I am glad that this got reversed.

Welcome to TeX.SX! Can you please add a minimal working example so that people can see what you have already tried. This makes it much easier for people to help you -- and they are much more likely to help if they can see that you have made a genuine effort first. — Andrew 11 mins ago
Looks like a more concise statement than what we have in the text block.
