@DavidCarlisle and anyone else who uses emacs: apparently a site just for the one true editor is in beta! emacs.stackexchange.com
Oh, I should've pinged @PauloCereda instead :-)

4 hours later…
7:46 AM
@GonzaloMedina I've raised this and got an answer: it sounds like a more general problem (other mods report issues with a backlog). As you say, this may be an 'over-expansion' issue, but I don't think it's deliberate.

1 hour later…
8:56 AM
@SeanAllred Don't you dare. :)

9:51 AM
@PauloCereda Did you register on Emacs.SE?

@egreg Should I? :)

@egreg Somewhere for all of those borderline OT questions on Emacs/AUCTeX issues/customisation to go in the future?

@JosephWright Possibly so.
@PauloCereda Definitely: you might learn what a text editor is. Remember to vote for Dilma.

@egreg Heavens forbid. :)
@egreg: I already have to deal with this: ELEZIONI PER IL RINNOVO DEI COMITATI DEGLI ITALIANI ALL’ESTERO
:)

Q: How do I plot a graph with the x axis across the middle?

David I have a huge project for my grade 11 physics class. I've just started using latex and i want to know how to plot a graph but as in the picture shows, the x axis is in the middle of the graph opposed as to the many I've seen online being on either side. Could someone provide me with the exact c...

We have a general 'creating plots' question that I think this is a dupe of, but I can't find the right one: anyone?

10:02 AM
@PauloCereda Are you able to read the instructions?

@egreg It took me a while to decypher what was going on. :) But then I found out there were instructions in Portuguese in the other side of the paper. D'oh!

@PauloCereda Bureaucratic Italian can be unintelligible also to mother tongue Italians.

@egreg Agreed. :) And not to mention bad typesetting. I won't dare send you the form I need to fill out. :P

Joseph Wright has added an event to this room's schedule.

2 hours later…
12:26 PM
I am out of votes.

12:42 PM
@egreg: could you help me?

12:55 PM
@PauloCereda Where? You are in need of votes?
I have many of them ;-)

@HarishKumar :)
@HarishKumar My last messages were unrelated. :) I need egreg to help me fill out an Italian form. :)

@HarishKumar vote for me! (speaking of which I removed my comment on that afrikaans question, it'll probably confuse a newcomer to have banter in the comments)
@HarishKumar don't be silly: of course @PauloCereda wanted help with Italian, surely you don't think he'd ask @egreg for help with TeX?

@PauloCereda Certainly, even for TeX.

@egreg Thank you! :) I was filling out the form. Città: Monghidoro. So far so good. Then I had Stato: ... Is it Bologna?
@DavidCarlisle LOL

@PauloCereda No, that's the “provincia”. “Stato” is “Italia”.

1:08 PM
@egreg oh my!

@PauloCereda Monghidoro is in “Provincia di Bologna”, “Regione Emilia-Romagna”, which belongs to Italy. We have no different states, just regions.

@egreg Thank you very much! :)
(@egreg let's tease him) @David: what should I write for Stato in the form? :)

@PauloCereda You'd be luckier if you asked him the name of the cricket club of Monghidoro.

@egreg ooh there's one? :)

@PauloCereda If there is, @DavidCarlisle will surely know.

1:21 PM
@egreg :)

@PauloCereda What I know is that there's good ice-cream. :)

@egreg ooh! :)

@PauloCereda hang on, I know some Italian, @egreg has been teaching me...
Oct 10 at 20:39, by egreg
@DavidCarlisle /pernacchio

@DavidCarlisle o.O

@DavidCarlisle I cleaned up too.
@PauloCereda Oh!. I lost it then! :-)
@PauloCereda You are applying for some thing in Italy?
@DavidCarlisle; Sure, I have been doing it every now and then. But now not today as I want to keep you happy. It is a job for tomorrow morning. ;-)

1:32 PM
@HarishKumar It's from the consulate. :)

@PauloCereda You are applying for visa? Planning to visit egreg?

@HarishKumar I'm half Italian, so the Italian government makes sure to annoy me as much as they annoy @egreg. :)
@Harish: but a coffee is in my plans soon. :)

@HarishKumar He doesn't need a visa, being an Italian citizen abroad.

@PauloCereda That is why it is called government. Every government has that in common.

@HarishKumar Everybody who has an Italian ancestor can obtain Italian citizenship.

1:36 PM
@PauloCereda What only coffee? I thought a beer? You are getting rid of all good habits. ;-)

@egreg Like being Irish, then ;-)

@egreg Is it so? That is cool. That is how our (earlier) ruling lady and her children are being close to Italy.

@Harish: I have my Italian citizenship (mom is Italian) so I can join the GuIT meetings. :)

@PauloCereda In Brazil, do they permit dual citizenship?

@HarishKumar bock beer. :)

1:39 PM
@egreg so if Joseph and I have Roman rather than Saxon origins, we can join too?

@PauloCereda Now I need cover. I have scant knowledge of those things. I am exposed. ;-)

@HarishKumar Yes, Sonia Gandhi's children and grandchildren could apply, but depending on Indian law they could lose their Indian citizenship.

@HarishKumar I think so. But the catch is, the "first" ancestor cannot be naturalized (does this word exist?).
My mom, for example, is still a foreigner. If she naturalizes, the process to obtain Italian citizenship from her becomes more complicated.
@DavidCarlisle What have the Romans ever done for us. :)

@egreg I guessed. I doubt that they have it in their plan B always. They may need it any way, given the present political scenario.

@DavidCarlisle We don't accept Celts. :P

1:42 PM
@PauloCereda Complex emigration rules!

In Brazil, European citizenship became insanely complicated. I just decided to go with the process because in my case things are very easy. But I had several problems mid way.

@PauloCereda Given us Lua? (oh no that was the Brazilians)

@DavidCarlisle Those pesky researchers at PUC Rio. :P
I plan to visit them someday. They have great courses on compilers. :)

@PauloCereda If only they'd used lisp

@PauloCereda BTW what is bock beer?

1:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle Lisp users love their cars (pun intended). :)
@HarishKumar Dark beer. :)
It's been a while since I had one.

@PauloCereda So it is just dark in colour, is that the only difference? Or is there more alcohol content in it?

@HarishKumar I think it's more stronger in taste. :)

2 hours later…
4:03 PM
@JosephWright Thank you!

4:23 PM
Hi! I've made the biggest LOL in a long time this morning.

4:33 PM
@tohecz Hey Tom! :) What happened?

@PauloCereda I got a €22 fine for crossing on the yellow signal on the bike

@tohecz by foot? :|

@PauloCereda on the bike

@tohecz oh my!

you gotta love France
but I've gained some experience from it. Next time I won't be that easy on them

4:35 PM
@tohecz Tom you naughty boy. :)

@PauloCereda of course. Well, I got angry at them quite, because that MF told me that I passed on the red signal, which wasn't true (this time)

@tohecz I risked to be hit by a cyclist who passed on the red signal, in Paris. ;-)

@egreg it was Tom! It was Tom!
:)

@PauloCereda A mad cyclist in rue du Temple!

@egreg Sacred bleu!

4:48 PM
@egreg when?
But I have to say straight that I've never get close to an accident when passing on the red signal. On the green signal, it's much more severe

@tohecz Three years ago. I was crossing rue du Temple where the Métro station is with the green light for pedestrians and that &@&*% was running as hell.

@egreg it was then quite at the beginning of this Parisian bike boom
and yes, I don't do that, I always cross carefully on the red signal

5:28 PM
@tohecz But you get fined. ;-)

@egreg yep, because as I said before, the French police is full of MFs

1 hour later…
6:41 PM
@Werner Thanks (ad \varphi)

@tohecz Yup...

I have the feeling my answers lately are bad. Some occasional votes, tough.

1 hour later…
7:57 PM
Hi, I did a registry cleanup, but now I can't use the image conversion option from the standalone class anymore.
I get this error: imgconvert is not recognized as an an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
And this warning: Class standalone Warning: Conversion failed! Please ensure that shell escape is enabled (e.g. use '-shell-escape').

@1010011010 Do you have ImageMagick binaries in your path? :)

@PauloCereda no:-)

@DavidCarlisle :)

@PauloCereda I compiled the same document as yesterday, yesterday everything worked.
@PauloCereda That being said, registry mechanic has no access to my system path.. :/

One thread worth reading IMHO: academia.stackexchange.com/questions/30539/… (including the comments)

8:05 PM
@tohecz hmm gotta love GeoIP (I'm still mid-reading it).
@tohecz: quite interesting read, thanks. :)

Guess I'll leave my PC on tomorrow for a third complete reinstall. Tex live manager is also broken. :D

8:49 PM
Any further suggestions? Otherwise I'll just start reinstalling everything now, just to get it over with..

@tohecz Yes, certainly interesting

@JosephWright such threads are a good lesson for everybody involved in the university. Because here on AC.SE, you get a true dialog between students, teachers, professors etc.

Q: Should we migrate AUCTeX questions if/when Emacs.SE goes live?

Sean AllredEmacs.SE (currently in beta but is anticipated to graduate) has a pretty active auctex tag going on. As TeX.SE is about the underlying TeXnology (and not really the editor), should we encourage new questions about AUCTeX be asked over on Emacs.SE? See the Emacs.SE (auctex) tag.

Thoughts?

@JosephWright Your answer is very reasonable.

9:04 PM
Okay, new question. Is there a way to uninstall TeX Live 2014 from windows when the uninstall script is also broken?

9:35 PM
@JosephWright yes your answer seems Ok except "know something" should be "know sometimes" (I think). Basically suck it and see...
@1010011010 apart from the path you can just remove the directory, but are you sure it isn't just your path you need to fix, is the tl2014 bin directory in your path?

10:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle Both the TL2014 as well as the ImageMagick bin directories are in my system PATH.

10:31 PM
@1010011010 Could you post your path here?

@PauloCereda Apparently not. The message is too long.
sec.
tny.cz/6f206e05 - password: texsx

10:47 PM
@1010011010 so does it work (long paths can get truncated:-) that is if you open a command window and type tex does tex start and put you at the * prompt?

@tohecz As my professor used to say cheating is allowed, getting caught not

@percusse That's what I say, too. :)

11:28 PM
@DavidCarlisle It does.
@DavidCarlisle I also just did a complete reinstall of the distribution, but that changed nothing.
imgconvert is not recognized as an an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

@1010011010 so what doesn't work:-) If tex works what else do you need:-)

@DavidCarlisle If tex works what else do you need? TeXworks ;)

@1010011010 well it's called convert really I think some windows things rename it to avoid clashing with convert hav eyou got it under that name (if you type convert and it asks if you want to reformat your disk say no:-)
@tohecz there is only one editor

well, there's one editor and one OS that's called an editor

@DavidCarlisle I can access convert from the command prompt, gives me more options than cmd can show.
Yeah, if I add convertexe={convert} it produces an empty image, but at least it does something...

11:36 PM
@1010011010 well in my texlive setup I only have convert, and texlive looks for it under that name, so I can't really help any more

@DavidCarlisle This actually already worked. Illustrator can deal with the output image. Thanks.

@1010011010 It's amazing what you can achieve by answering based on total ignorance:-)
