@FrancescoEndrici: The tutorial I was mentioning saturday is: slideshare.net/sebsto/cloudschool-2014

7:31 AM
@ClaudioFiandrino How was your travel back to LUX?
@ClaudioFiandrino You missed a good pizza and a nice evening.

7:50 AM
I'm very sorry to have left before pizza time :) Nice travel: leaving so early in Verona I managed to spend some time in Milano before catching the flight in Malpensa.
BTW: I will try to produce better listings from now on ;)

@ClaudioFiandrino Good boy!

Q: What is the correct way to typeset powers of indexed letters

krnkWhat is the correct way to typeset the power of indexed letters (eg. square of a_{1})? I know that superscripts can be added by simply adding ^{n} (eg. a_{1}^{2}), but the exponent comes right above the index: 2 a 1 I don't think this is semantically correct, and what I want is: 2 a ...

@tohecz Interesting question from a semantic POV, as (a_1)^2 makes most sense

8:44 AM
@JosephWright Not in general; subscripts are read before superscripts and it's much more economical (and traditional) to have a_1^2

@tohecz: Just +1 your comment in the supersript question ;-)

@egreg I realise that, what I mean is that this means 'the square of a-index-1' not 'the square of a all-indexed-1'.
@ChristianHupfer Not the same, but at least in something of a similar area. In chemistry, we've recently had a change of recommendation about superscript charges on complex ions, where somthing like sulphate [SO4(2-)] should now have the '2-' after the '4' to show the charge applies to the entire entity.

@JosephWright: Although not being a chemist I know that the style for chemical formulas differs from math, of course, since the meaning of sub/superscript is different compared to math formula

@ChristianHupfer Yes, of course

@JosephWright If a subscripts denotes an “operation”, which is essentially what happens with tensor notation, then stacking horizontally subscripts and superscripts makes sense.

8:52 AM
@JosephWright I would probably do exactly that in one very specific context, but otherwise, it's ridiculous.

@egreg: Yes, but this is done lazily by Physicists especially, shifting all the indices nearer to the quantity, disregarding the order of tensor indices, e.g. that a 3rd contravariant index is placed above the first covariant

@ChristianHupfer Physicists are not authoritative when they write mathematics. :)

@egreg: I feel offended :-P

@ChristianHupfer Sorry. Someone must tell the truth. ;-)

@egreg what do you mean? Einstein's notation is after all perfect, isn't it? :D

8:55 AM
@egreg: Too late, I will never talk to you again :-)

@tohecz Of course it's not Einstein's: a mathematician helped him in understanding tensors.

and btw, the question is off-topic.

@tohecz: It's an very,very, efficient notation, often written lazily. I told my students to use 'diagonal summation' instead of stacking the indices (Well, it needs a metric for that ;-))

9:12 AM
@ChristianHupfer now I lost you, but it doesn't matter. I'll never use this stuff again I think...

@tohecz: Nevermind, it's probably related to Physicist's usage of (Pseudo)-Riemannian Geometry ;-)

9:24 AM
@ClaudioFiandrino Grazie!

10:11 AM
@FrancescoEndrici You're welcome :) Let me know about future developments

1 hour later…
11:36 AM
Where's @PauloCereda? Playing cricket with ducks?

12:09 PM
@egreg good question...

12:57 PM
Another xparse one. Is there a workaround to ignore spaces before the last optional command? I mean that something like \foo {arg1} {arg2} [optional arg3] is taken as an optional argument even if there's a space between it and the last mandatory argument?
If we are sure that the command will be called in a place where no [ can follow, e.g., the preamble, then it would be nice to, at least, have that option.

@Manuel we've oscillated forwards and backwards on that. There was for a while but I think there isn't at the moment (unless I forget the outcome) There was a question on site last week (I think ) about that, to which I was going to post an answer but didn't (@JosephWright is probably more on top of this code than I am these days:-)

Hi all, can anybody reproduce this issue:

Q: tex4ebook for dummies

skeyI'm not able to make tex4ebook to work with even the simplest document. \documentclass{article} \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \begin{document} \section{section 1} this is a test \end{document} when I run tex4ebook filename.tex I get: filename.tex:1: unexpected symbo...

it seems that OP has problem with install of custom packages, I am not sure if I described installation process understandable: github.com/michal-h21/tex4ebook#installation

@Manuel people usually want this for a place where you might get [ in text eg amsmath redefines the latex2e optional argument handling to not skip over white space so that you can use [a,b] at the start of an array cell without it being taken as an option to ` \\ ` if you put it at the start of a line.

What alternatives exist to typophile.com? It feels like I'm talking to a brick wall, that's how deserted that forum is. :(

1:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yes, I understand. And I find it nice. However, I believe there should exist the option at least.
As an example, if you want to use in the preamble \setmainfont {font} [options] it doesn't work.

@Manuel ah OK, I think that (in the end) we decided to make that work) but that leaves open the question of whether it should be possible to make \\ newline [a,b] work as in amsmath...

1:34 PM
@michal.h21: Where can I get make4ht? I am interested in your package as well and I want to try to reproduce the issue

1:51 PM
@michal.h21: I just installed your packages and run the MWE posted by the OP, it runs without problems. I got a small ebook! Nice package!!!!

2:10 PM
@ChristianHupfer don't you want to paste in a verbatim matlab transcript without adding $ and other tex markup?

@DavidCarlisle: The last time I used matlab it was probably the last time I really used Windoze, so, it must have been in the last millenium ;-) I've forgotten Matlab syntax

@ChristianHupfer well the bit causing the problem is a matlab result and it doesn't put $ around numbers by default:-) (but when I ran the OPs code I got a minus)

@DavidCarlisle: Yes, I got it too ... I can remove the $ ... $ stuff, that's no problem

@ChristianHupfer OK I give up the OP accepted your answer anyway:-)

@DavidCarlisle: Well, I will edit it right now, anyway ;-)

2:20 PM
@ChristianHupfer but I'm not sure what the problem is them if there are no $ the mathescape stuff presumably doesn't apply?

@DavidCarlisle: I just tested it again: There is no difference between mathescape=true/false then... I think, the problem lies somewhere else (and no, it's not my 'answer' ;-))

@ChristianHupfer learn from @egreg, don't worry if your answer or the question makes sense, just take the points and move on:-)

@DavidCarlisle: I don't worry, but I think there might be a better solution
Is this a font (package) problem?

Q: pdfLaTeX problems with figures in Arabi package (Farsi)

Ebrahim Avazkonandeh GHaravolI have searched the site with different keywords regarding the aforementioned problem and it seems that I am the first guy with this problem. I am new to Arabi package. I will use it to typeset Farsi texts, if I could solve this problem. I use pdfLaTeX to compile my latex files and interestingly...

I can't hardly imagine that a missing \author{...} generates a crash

@Manuel We currently don't have a switch, though one is possible. The argument against one is that this means that the syntax allowed by commands then varies in a way that's not predictable by the user.
@Manuel This is true, and is an issue
@Manuel My favoured position would I think be to say we'll handle \\ outside of the usual xparse 'rules' as it really is a very unusual oddity. However, that is for the team as a whole to decide.
@DavidCarlisle Still needs thought: I guess I'd favour allowing space skipping in general and accepting that \\ will have to go down as an exception (and thus not done using xparse, long-term).

@JosephWright I was thinking that's what we decided, but you're right it's just what you suggested. (how could they be different:-)

2:33 PM
@DavidCarlisle :-)
@DavidCarlisle Probably either (a) Frank had a counter-argument or (b) we didn't reach a conclusion!

@JosephWright I am scrolling trough the unanswered list is search for a nice problem to solve. What was the usual inactive time for a Q to clear with the next »answer the unanswered«? I'll create a list and then simply dump :-p

@Johannes_B Couple of weeks, normally

@JosephWright ok, thanks.

2:56 PM
@DavidCarlisle Like the one on \documentclass[article]?

3:08 PM
@egreg I daren't look:-)

@DavidCarlisle Coward?

@egreg so I got brave and looked. Typical: you could only answer the question as I had pushed the OP into adding some information to make it answerable, so once again I do the work and you get the points:(

@egreg: hi! My office is being rebuilt, so I have no internet connectivity for a while. I hope it will be done by Wednesday. Meanwhile, I have a poor connection through smartphone so I can at least check my mail. :)

@DavidCarlisle Sorry, but my answer preceded the edit by the OP.

@PauloCereda You might go to SP.

@egreg: that will be Friday. :)
@David: my expander now supports recursive macros. When will NAG contact me so we can make million bucks selling it? :)

3:29 PM
@PauloCereda NAG will contact you with a message telling that tomorrow they'll contact you with a message telling …

@PauloCereda just think, add a few more features and you'll catch up with m4 and be cutting edge 1970's technology!

AnandIt shows without arrows.. Please do needful Regards

Is this just not an answer or is this a lazy spammer?

@Johannes_B: Nope, it's a lazy OP, a question, not an answer, in my point of view

@ChristianHupfer a comment left just now by @tohecz

@Johannes_B well, not an answer at this moment. Only porn advertisements get marked as spam ;)

@Johannes_B: I just noted it
@tohecz: They confuse LaTeX with something different ;-)

I had this in my support queue today:
`Hi everyone,
First of no doubt many posts from me as I love to ask questions.`
It makes sense with a bit of eyes crossing and imagination.

cis
4:46 PM
@Johannes_B I fear @DaviCarlisle does not like his blkarry-package as we do? :()

@cis That only works at the beginning of a message
@cis I never used it, and probably never will

cis
@Johannes_B Mmh, maybe I am the only user. :)

@Johannes_B the @ ping? that works anywhere (if you spell the name right:-)

@DavidCarlisle It was the :12345 post reference.

4:54 PM
@Johannes_B: Yes, you can ping anyone, even at the end of the message @DavidCarlisle ;-)

But i can't refer to that message at the end, apparently :18237502

@ChristianHupfer @Joh @Dav Well, only as long as the person is in the room or was there not so long time ago
@Johannes_B no, and it somehow doesn't work in fixed font messages either

@tohecz: You just wanted to annoy me? :D

@ChristianHupfer I could do that too

@tohecz @Joh However, as you can see, you can even ping yourself :)

4:56 PM
@DavidCarlisle @ChristianHupfer @DavidCarlisle If the name is not unique, every @paul in the room gets pinged.

@DavidCarlisle: I did not expect anything different :-P

@Johannes_B but we don't tolerate other Davids here so @David reaches me

@DavidCarlisle :-)
@DavidCarlisle Btw, who decided that titlepages will get pagenumber 1?

@Johannes_B well titlepage in the standard classes just does nothing with the page number so it's (usually) 1 already.
@Johannes_B what number would you prefer?

{\if@restonecol\twocolumn \else \newpage \fi
\if@twoside\else
\setcounter{page}\@ne
\fi
}%517 report.cls

5:01 PM
@Johannes_B cheating:-)
1 min ago, by David Carlisle
@Johannes_B what number would you prefer?

@DavidCarlisle ->
\documentclass[
]{report}
\usepackage{showframe}
\usepackage{blindtext}

\title{How does pagenumbering work?}
\author{TeX.SX}
\begin{document}

\maketitle
pagenumber?
\thepage
\end{document}
@DavidCarlisle I wanted to write a verbose answer to reference when new pagenumbering questions get in. I was a bit confused by the output.

@Johannes_B: Didn't we have something similar some days ago. maketitle does something weird ... I think, I answered some question two weeks ago about this... but I have no time, I want to cook ;-)

@ChristianHupfer happy cooking.
@ChristianHupfer i'll skim your answers (what a pain that will be :-p)

@Johannes_B Oh OK yes that was a bug fix at the start of 2e, which is why there's an ifcompatibilty setting so in latex2.09 mode it sets it to 0
@Johannes_B vvvv 'twas LL :
% \begin{environment}{titlepage}
% In the normal environments, the titlepage environment does nothing
% but start and end a page, and inhibit page numbers. In the report
% style, it also resets the page number to one, and then sets it
% back to one at the end. In compatibility mode, it sets the
% page number to zero. This is incorrect since it results in using
% the page parameters for a right-hand page but it is the way it was.
% In two-column style, it still makes a
%  one-column page.

@DavidCarlisle Saw that. But i would expect to be the second page pagenumber? \thepage to output 2.

5:13 PM
@Johannes_B the idea is you don't number the titlepage so the next page is 1

@DavidCarlisle So this is simply by design?
@DavidCarlisle And twoside simply does what it does to fix even/odd pages?

@Johannes_B yes twoside really ought to use \cleardoublepage to throw a blank and then start again at 1, but it doesn't-) but at least the log shows who to blame, so that's alright.

Without looking at the look but taking an advanced guess, i think i know who to blame @DavidCarlisle

@Johannes_B well there are some initials at the end of my quote above:-)

@DavidCarlisle O, my mind didn't parse those correctly. Sorry :-)

5:19 PM
In practice you probably always want \cleardoublepage after the titlepage but I suppose an argument for not forcing that is that sometimes you do want material (eg library of congress and printing info on the back of the titlepage (that would be blank with \cleardoublepage)

@DavidCarlisle Good point.

5:46 PM
\documentclass[twoside,
footsepline,plainfootsepline,
headsepline]{report}
\usepackage{blindtext}
\usepackage[automark,clines,markcase=nouppercase]{scrlayer-scrpage}
\clearpairofpagestyles
\cfoot[\pagemark]{\pagemark}
\ohead{\headmark}
\KOMAoption{footsepline}{:.5\textwidth}
\renewcommand{\chaptermark}[1]{\markboth{#1}{}}
\begin{document}
\Blinddocument
\end{document}
^^ ^^ ^^^^^ Does that work with an up to date TL14?

@Johannes_B Yes, although the footline is horrible

@egreg Thanks, @footline: Agreed.

6:19 PM
@Johannes_B: Prove it first that you skim them :-P

6:47 PM
@JosephWright: Here is another...

@Werner Oh great
@Werner I'll take action

@Werner you seem really annoyed by that, aren't you? :)

@tohecz Not the only one

@JosephWright well, I know. I'm annoyed, too, but I don't have the patience for the investigation

7:05 PM
@tohecz Hmmm... maybe a little. But not cut-off-my-Interwebz annoyed.

Q: Which inertial observer should I choose when using $\Delta U = -\Delta K$?

In PSTricks we trustI just read and undertood that For any conservative force $F$ (which is not necessarily constant), we can define a potential energy change $\Delta U$ of an object on which the force exerts as $\Delta U=-W$ where $W$ is the work done by the force on the object. Can anyone suggest a good source to start learning LaTeX scripting? I'm still working on this tex.stackexchange.com/q/207552/29387, and feel like I'm stringing together incantations I don't understand.

@Telemachus the texbook (not free) or tex by topic (free) or this site (free:-)

@DavidCarlisle Thank you. I'll check those out. (I'd come across links for tex by topic, but it's good to get independent confirmation that's it's good.)

10:12 PM
@JosephWright The truth is that the problems with [..] taken as an optional argumens by mistake… is just in three or four cases. Until now I thought it was more correct the “not an argument if separated by a space”, but since it just happens in a few cases, I think it would be better to give an option to choose, given the default of \foo {arg1} [arg2] and then that the user could explicitly say “Hey, if there's a space don't count it as an argument”.

@Manuel but then they might expect that to also apply to \foobar [zzz] but in that case the space has gone already
@Manuel also allowing the command author to choose, means that the reader 9or syntax highlighters etc) can't guess the way the command parses without knowing the definition of each command, which is a benefit of having a consistent syntax

@DavidCarlisle I don't get your point. Isn't that the same case right now?

@Manuel yes which is why I agree with Josephs suggestion that xparse always skip spaces between arguments \\ is a special case as it's essentially the only example of a command name with a non-letter that takes an optional argument
@Manuel space after \foobar is same as now, but latex2e and xparse currently both have fixed (but differemt) rules about space between arguments, neither give the command author the choice

@DavidCarlisle I think I meant to say the same. I would prefer \foo {arg1} [arg2] rather than \foo {arg1} [normaltext because of the space].
@DavidCarlisle By the way, did you actually made an effort to find an answer to the LuaTeX problem of accessing the last box of a paragraph?

@Manuel ?

10:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle I mean I always thought you answered effortlessly :)

@Manuel well I opened texdoc luatex to look up the node functions (actually I think I missed node.last_node, I should probably edit the answer in a bit)
hhm perhaps not:-) ! Attempt to double-free hlist node 6367, ignored.

Q: How to make leaving a PhD program seem like a positive thing on a resume

UnsureI have a feeling this question has been posted before, but I wanted to ask as my situation is slightly different. I've recently decided to leave my PhD program in the social sciences in order to look for work. I've basically come to the conclusion after completing 3 full years, courses, and field...

Stupid question. It should be the highlight of the resume.
