12:12 AM
@egreg you've been watching too much football, only 3rd place for the week?

@DavidCarlisle Martin earned a 500 bounty, so we won't be able to catch him. Let's see on Saturday night. :)
@DavidCarlisle I'm just 50 behind you, after all. Watch out!

@egreg I'm going back to watching bm crash luatex so you'll probably be ahead by the time I emerge

@DavidCarlisle I use bold face math very rarely, apart from \mathbf; ISO norms prescribe italic bold face for vectors and matrices, but I'm a mathematician and the ISO people aren't: it's clear from what they write in the norms about math. ;-)

@egreg +1
and good night

@DavidCarlisle So probably I would simply define a new math alphabet with the boldface font for the occasional boldface symbol.

12:25 AM
@egreg Oh flip I never use my packages, I just do it to find out what on earth unicode-math is doing (and to stop people mailing me complaining bm doesn't work)
2
@egreg But that's just too easy (apart from the fact that bold math fonts are a bit scarce) bm tries to make symbols bold as well as alphabets so \sum and for alphabets it shifts the mathcode up to the 1dxxx range (if it can find the mathcode without crashing the engine) so you get bold even if there isnt a bold font (eg cambia math or still lmodern I think)

@DavidCarlisle What I think is that with Unicode math fonts, the whole concept of math groups should be revisited, making all symbols sensitive to a math group change; after all they just come from one big font.
Thus \bm{X} would simply be \begingroup\mathgroup=\bfgroup#1\endgroup.
Alas, it's not like this, I guess. :(

@egreg of course that is one of the things bm tries. It's possible that that could i fact be made to work but I suspect I'd need to know more about fontspec (rather than unicode math) to construct a big font with all the needed math parameters and with glyphs re-arranged so that it had bold glyphs wherever possible. for cambria math for example (I know you like windows) there isn;t going to be a bold font any time soon but it has bold italic and upright and sans up in plane 1
I'm moving things around in tex macros because I used to understand that, it may yet be better to re-arrange the glyphs at the tex font level with fontspec or even (if licence allows) at the font level with fontforge or something

@DavidCarlisle Enjoy. :)
Good night.

@egreg night :-)

Please, don't you know whether I can honour a bounty to a CW answer of a non-CW question?

8:22 AM
@tohecz As people don't get rep from a CW answer, I can't see how that would work

@JosephWright then what are the conditions when you can un-CW an answer?
20
A: What's the quickest and easiest way to write "2nd" "3rd" etc in LaTeX

Jukka SuomelaI guess the quickest and easiest solution is to simply write "2nd", "3rd", etc. Superscripts aren't really necessary.

@tohecz Looks like this is deliberate, and I think I've got to respect Jukka's decision

@JosephWright damn, pity. I can't do anything to stress that answer. But I understand you

8:44 AM
@JosephWright if I start a bounty to try whether I can assign it to Jukka's answer, would you remove the bounty if I don't succeed?

@tohecz I'd suggest asking a meta question on the main site: this may have been asked before

@JosephWright ok
@JosephWright You can even bounty a fully CW thread, so it should be possible :)

@tohecz Ah, right
@tohecz I'd caution that while current practice is that superscripts are not used in English in the case you highlight, that's something of a 'fashion': they certainly were in the past, and this might change

@JosephWright well, it's CW, you certainly can ;) Sorry I gotta go now.

Thank you very much for your membership registration with the TeX Users Group.
There's something very confusing about tag wikis: I can approve edits, but I cannot edit. Therefore I don't see the "Edit" button. What shall I then do with a not-so-good edit suggestion?

2:40 PM
So far today I've tracked down a (possible) bug in pdflatex and an oversight in one of egreg's answers. That's two impossible things accomplished, just four to go.

@AndrewStacey What possible bug? And thanks for that comment!

@egreg Although latex has \pdfsavepos, it doesn't seem to work quite right: there's a constant vertical offset. See:
5
A: TikZ: anchors of special node “current page” seem to be incorrect in landscape

Andrew StaceyI'm a bit hesitant about calling this a bug in pdflatex, but from my not-very-extensive investigations, it would appear that the position returned by the primitive \pdfsavepos is offset when in landscape mode and producing dvi. One way to explain the behaviour (though I've no idea how accurate t...

2:58 PM
@AndrewStacey Quite interesting. Actually DVI files don't know the physical paper size, at least in the original setup.

@egreg Interesting to know. But presumably TeX knows something about where stuff ends up on the page and uses this to compute \pdfsavepos. But also presumably if the dvi doesn't know the page size then recomputing from top left to bottom left is an inexact science.

@AndrewStacey It records coordinates relative to a point which the driver sets to its (1in-\hoffset,1in-\voffset) point (the values of \hoffset and \voffset are also recorded).

I think I just caught @David not being aware of a feature of his own package:
2
A: Problem of different spaces between subscripts and letters in math mode

toheczThis is not a feature, but a property of TeX. The engine is not capable of automatic kerning. The boxes of f and b are just next to each other, but the shape of the letters makes it look like there's a space. You can of course improve it by saying \bm{f}_{\!b}. The macro \! inserts a small negat...

@tohecz The TeX engine is capable of doing automatic kerning! But it can't in some occasions. And math lists are a very tough beast to deal with.

@egreg yeah, I should edit the first part out

3:09 PM
@tohecz Definitely. :)

@egreg well, done

@tohecz One of the problem here is that the bold "f" and the subscript come from different fonts.

@egreg yeah, but try the following with and without bm:
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{amsmath,bm}

\begin{document}

    \begin{equation}
    \left.
    \begin{array} {c}
    \displaystyle \frac{\partial\epsilon_f}{\partial t} + \nabla \cdot (\epsilon_f \boldsymbol{u}_f) = 0 \\
    \displaystyle \frac{\partial  (\rho_f \epsilon_f \boldsymbol{u}_f)}{\partial t} + \nabla \cdot (\rho_f \epsilon_f \boldsymbol{u}_f \boldsymbol{u}_f) = -\epsilon_f \nabla p + \mu \nabla^2(\epsilon_f \boldsymbol{u}_f) + \boldsymbol{f}_b
    \end{array}
    \right\}
    \end{equation}

The documentation of amsbsy.sty, which provides \boldsymbol states very clearly that \boldsymbol should be replaced by \bm (which bm does).

@egreg tell that to KOF

3:17 PM
@tohecz can't possibly be true, and anyway bm isn't my friend at the moment
@egreg tell the user to use xe/lua tex so they come from the same font and use an updated bm....

For Fedora users:
Hi,
at today's supplementary Go/No-Go meeting it was decided to
ship RC4 (release candidate) as the final release [1].

#agreed to ship RC4 as final release (with no votes against)

The release date is Tuesday, January 15, 2013!

Big thanks goes to everyone who helped with this RC3/RC4
testing effort and again to everyone who participated on
the whole release. Time for Fedora 18 release parties!

mmh personal question out off topic from latex... i am elaborating a business card for someone but he does not want his name and address to be there just the phone and the e-mail. now, if someone give you that card u might contact him even whitout knowin the name?
and sorry for bad gramma English is not my native :P

kan
@Yaren No worries, you conveyed your thought well enough. :)
(I am not a native, anyway)

6:55 PM
thx @kan
hahahaha well i havent taken a course of english on my live, internet its my teacher(wiki.en, online games, public chat, etc..)
so my english is so messy and maybe some words are missplaced, sometimes i think i talk/type like Yoda

@Yaren I think name is an important part of any business. Phone and e-mail are ok, but without a personal reference, I'd never contact such service.

@PauloCereda thx for that

kan
@PauloCereda Exactly my feeling.

well he says hes ok whit the company name, altough its not a company he just elaborate that name for his personal service.

@Yaren IMHO he should then put his name instead of the "company". My guess would be that since his "company" doesn't exist as an official business, he doesn't want to establish any relation between his name and the business, in case of something bad happens (government stuff).

7:01 PM
@PeterGrill I didn't really test it, but, as DEK said, "I only proved my program correct, I didn't try it". :)

@PauloCereda i got the idea, and thx for that. btw what does mean "IMHO"?

@Yaren "In my humble opinion". :)

@PauloCereda ooh! thx so much again =)

@tohecz Problems with edits?

@egreg yeah, again. Quite often people don't even read the whole text for obvious typos when they edit. As well, they forget to retag.

@tohecz :( I just edited a message removing "thanks" just to find it reinserted, and somebody approved the reinsertion. :(

@egreg sigh

@tohecz And the train is 20 minutes late, so I'll not be home before 20:45. :(

@egreg I'm still at school
btw: tex.stackexchange.com/posts/91190/revisions some fun to go though to ease your delay ;)

7:25 PM
@tohecz That's what young wannabe researchers should do. :P

@egreg not if they have a lot of to-be-done-at-the-home-computer things to do

@tohecz I suggest a detour through Pigalle and Montmartre before going home.

!!/say
Psmith, the TeX bot: Oops, something wrong happened.

@egreg that would not be so bad, I go though Stalingrad and close to Gare de l'Est

Psmith, the TeX bot: And I'm so happy about it! I think David should have a t shirt with nitah yeht nillor em ees yeht written in it.

7:29 PM
!!/eightball Should tohecz go for a night off in Pigalle?

@egreg Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: you need to use emacs.

@PauloCereda I don't have enough fingers for that.

@tohecz Control-meta-super-c-l-x?

@egreg -mousemiddle-reset-monitoron-elevatordown

kan
@PauloCereda When did this become a part of eightball standards? David has been clearly lobbying? :P

7:32 PM
@kan It's been around for some time. :)

Four answers for 43 upvotes today; and the least upvoted is the most difficult, of course (the workaround for Peter Grill). Well, I'm going off-line, at last the train is near to destination.

@egreg ok, see ya at home!

kan
@PauloCereda oh!
