It is now 0:25 UTC, so 25min into a new official StackExchange day and @egreg already has 120rep!

12:45 AM
@jtbandes If you would rather stop the warning from bugging you, use the silence package and "silence that sucker." But, that should be considered a last resort.
@MartinScharrer Yah, it's hard to keep up with him...!
His reputation precedes him!

@Werner Good one!

Go New Zealand! :)

9:11 AM
@PauloCereda Looks tight

@JosephWright Indeed! How did that NZ player lose three penalties?
Thankfully, I'm watching this game in the brazilian ESPN channel, so the commentators explain all the time what's going on. :)

@PauloCereda Um 'you try to get the odd-shaped ball to the other end of the grassy bit'

9:26 AM
@JosephWright Exactly! 'see those two posts there? The kicker needs to pass the ball bewteen them.'
Topper - which is a sports equipment provider - sponsors the brazilian rugby team. They have very funny TV ads: youtube.com/watch?v=neLlBvN_D8k

The presentation yesterday on TeX.sx to UK-TUG went very well

@JosephWright Awesome! Any highlights? :)

I spoke about the meta post

Q: What are the pros and cons of TeX.SX compared to Usenet groups, mailing lists and web forums?

Stefan KottwitzIn response to the blog post about the TeX.SX TUG membership, Jürgen said in his blog, translated: It's a mystery to me how it can come about that somebody chooses a web forum for communication, especially about TeX, because there are excellent news and mail reader, providing a much more ...

I also managed to give out some business cards :-)

@JosephWright Nice! As if nobody knew you already. :P
Is there any PDF presentations available?

@PauloCereda It was all discussion: no slides as such (from anyone)

@JosephWright I see. I was curious about Doxygen, as I use it for code documentation.
And your presentation, of course. :)
"We have several channels in which our members can interact with each others. One of them is the TeX.sx chatroom, but beware there are spammers in there!" :-)

10:10 AM
@PauloCereda Simon Dales was using Doxygen for proof-of-concept. He had to 'mangle' TeX to something C-like to make it work, as Doxygen is not flexible enough to alter the required input. That means the output looks odd.
Simon is writing a second version of tex2dox, which will be 'native' for TeX
@PauloCereda Perhaps next year we'll try to record the meeting: there was talk about doing that for our LaTeX course

@JosephWright Awesome! Let's see if I can join you guys until the beginning of the year.

@PauloCereda I might as River Valley about it: they 'have the technology'

@JosephWright you mean, a live streaming?

@PauloCereda Not sure about that, although we did wonder about Skype. I was thinking more recording and making available later.

@JosephWright Have you guys ever thought about short videos like the ones Linux Journal does once in a while? They are called "Linux tech tip of the day".

10:21 AM
@PauloCereda It's a question of time and resources

@JosephWright I see. Anyway, I really like the idea of recording meetings. :)

@PauloCereda I'll see what happens. First, we want to record some training stuff. I'll have to find out if we can hire the gear or need to buy it. That might be easier, long-term

@JosephWright Cool! :)

47447 :-)

@MartinScharrer 60k until the end of the year.
@egreg: rep cap already? :)

10:43 AM
@MartinScharrer See e-mail about ctanhg project

10:59 AM
@JosephWright Thanks.
It works well enough so far, but on the other hand I didn't tested it that much.
There are still some features I like to implement.
I excluded the binary and other things mostly because of license and storage reasons.
As long a CTAN package has a simply directory structure, e.g. DTX, INS, PDF and README all in one directory, it works fine. I needed to add some extra code to handle bundles.
Some of them still need some manual work.

@MartinScharrer Yes, I can see that for packages
About how much storage are you using?

@JosephWright So far actually less than a normal CTAN rsync, because I don't have the really large files.
du just told me 5.6G, but like I said I currently don't do everything.

@MartinScharrer Right

Also it will grow in a higher rate than CTAN does of course.

11:15 AM
@MartinScharrer Right, but still probably only in the 10 Gb range

11:47 AM
@JosephWright Yes, I think so.

Q: How to prevent TeXShop from making .aux, .syntec.gz and .log while compiling?

snickersI'm not a super-user of LaTeX, I only use it for small reports with lots of maths. I often have to do it with other people so we put everything in a dropbox folder. Is there a way to prevent TexShop from making all those .aux, .syntec.gz and .log files while compiling ? We don't use them at all a...

I think it's a dupe
@StefanKottwitz's slides are online:
Stefan Kottwitz on October 23, 2011

As I promised in the daily reports on the TeX User Group Conference 2011, here’s the presentation I made on that meeting.

You can directly download it as PDF file: TeX Online Communities

Or visit texblog.net to for viewing it within your browser.

This presentation is about TeX online communities, such as discussion groups, mailing lists and web forums. During this talk I introduced the TeX Q&A site tex.stackexchange.com and showed some of its features which make it a good choice for developing and sharing TeX contents, for building a TeX knowledge base besides just discussing. Finally I compared those systems. …

12:20 PM
@JosephWright Yep, me too. I didn't like seeing answers popping up for it.

@MartinScharrer Closed

Now on TV: ManCity Vs. ManUtd. :)
Which template is used in Stefan's slides?

12:46 PM
@PauloCereda I used lankton-keynote

@StefanKottwitz Ah cool! :)

1 hour later…
1:48 PM
Goal!

2:23 PM
wow, ManUtd 1:6 ManCity.

Q: Latex SpellChecker with Eclipse plugin Texlipse

strauberryI'm using the Eclipse IDE and the Texlipse plugin the edit my tex-files. I found the option to use a spell checker, very nice :-) My question is how to mark the spelling mistakes as warnings or errors in Eclipse so I can see them in the "Problems"-View?!

I suppose this question is kinda off-topic. It's has nothing to do with LaTeX per se, it's about Eclipse and spell-checker.

Q: c# Retrieving files from directory that contains large amount of files

eddyukI have directory that contains nearly 14,000,000 audio samples in *.wav format. All plain storage, no subdirectories. I want to loop through the files, but when I use DirectoryInfo GetFiles on that folder the whole application freezes for minutes! Can this be done another way? Perhaps read 100...

14,000,000 files inside a directory! OMG!

@PauloCereda No

@JosephWright Ah OK. :)

@PauloCereda Historically, we sort-of messed about with the layout of the letters. Take a look at uk.tug.org/baskerville for some examples
You can see the 'odd' placement of 'U' in uk.tug.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/66.pdf, for example

5:50 PM
@PauloCereda Today I was at my brother's house in the country to collect olives (but my support was mostly moral). They did 650 kg, just some trees around the house. But I've done my TeX.SE duty, of course. :)

@egreg How nice! 650 kg is an impressive quantity! I've never seen an olive tree. How do you collect? I thought it was like collecting coffee, but it's a big tree.

@PauloCereda You put a net under the tree, beat the branches and use a rake. The olives fall on the net. Bigger producers have machines.

6:06 PM
@egreg Ah nice idea! I never thought of that. :)

@egreg I guess they don't bruise :-)

@PauloCereda Apparently you may have an opportunity to see one soon: flavorsofbrazil.blogspot.com/2011/06/…

@AlanMunn Ah Minas Gerais... they have so many tasty food products! :)

6:47 PM
@PauloCereda I should say that ours is not a zone for growing olive trees; there are only three places in the region where they grow: the Colli Euganei (where my brother lives, just a few km south of Padua), another South exposed place near Bassano del Grappa (below a 1700 m high mountain, Monte Grappa) and Garda lake. The best Italian olive oil comes from Liguria, Tuscany, Umbria and Apulia.

Does anything new popped up for this topic in the meantime?

Q: Dimensioning of a technical drawing in TikZ

pmav99Is there is an easy way to mark dimensions in a technical drawing with TikZ? Is there a library or something? Edit I am using xelatex. Update I chose Martin's answer because it serves me well for the moment. Ultimately the best solution would be a library that, in an easy and consistent mann...

I library for this would be great!

7:04 PM
@egreg Ah I imagined olives had to grow on a certain soil and weather. I'll buy some olive seeds and see if they can grow in my backyard. I have a good hand for planting trees. :)

7:39 PM
@egreg: now I'm on Juve. :) Which one do you prefer, this one or this one? Forza la Juve la Juve la Juve alè è bianconera la Bella Signora, wow this song is catchy.

It is amusing how the majority of questions on English Language & Usage are of form "What is the word for …?" I find that not a very good sign.

8:19 PM
@PauloCereda Probably the second type.

@egreg ah the one that I like more. :)

@JosephWright They're pretty indifferent to beating.

My article with some TikZ figures was published. I mentioned tex.sx in the acknowledgements. Unfortunately the journal messed up the figures.

@PauloCereda An olive tree arrives to maturity when 50 years old, but starts producing almost fully after 9-10 years. Some trees arrived at an age of 2000 years.

@egreg wow, impressive! But I suppose the diameter of the trunk is not so wide, isn't it?

8:34 PM
@PauloCereda No, they don't grow very much in diameter.

@egreg I wonder how they arrive at such ages! :)

8:48 PM
@PauloCereda They live in places where the climate is very nice.

9:01 PM
@egreg Interesting. I'll try with a tiny olive tree, let's see if it works here. ;)

1 hour later…
10:08 PM
I was wondering if data was available through other methods than data explorer. Then I found a torrent file with the dumps of all SE sites.
I knew MWE, but this acronym is new for me: SSCCE (Short, Self Contained, Correct (Compilable), Example). Programmers. :P
