room topic changed to The SE Tavern: I'll bet you all drink fruity drinks with foreign names and little umbrellas in them. (no tags)

Shog9 has unfrozen this room.

I'm here to ping @badp and chew bubblegum

user2334
This room is promising

...and I'm all out of gum.
Hey, it's @ChrisF, here to avoid opening a connection to a second chat server!

room topic changed to The SE Tavern: I'll bet you all pretend drinking fruity drinks with foreign names and little umbrellas in them as you sip soda in front of your computer in your pants. (no tags)

@Shog9 Ha! I'll have you know I've just been in to the meta tavern and left again as there was no one else chatting.

pants? You wish...

obligatory - hah: joke's on you! No pants here.

Ok, so I'm drinking gin. Tanqueray. With sprite, since I don't have any better mixers at the moment.

caaaaaaw

So the purpose of this room is to talk in here so TL stays silent?

@Mana watch it, or I'll start calling you cawas

Apparently.

user2334
Should rename this room to "Teachers' Lounge - The Talkie Remake"

And then @jcolebrand showed up and ruined it

How the hell have I already got four messages in here before this one? eeeps
Just for that Mrozek, starred

So who's going to be the first one to massively abuse their mod status and migrate 40,000 messages from TL to this room?

Who wants to get access to the TL blocked so they have to chat in here you mean?
gotta tell ya, @Mark - I hadn't really even thought about it much before responding to that progse post, but... One reason I enjoy the SO elections so much is simply that most of the candidates at least have some idea of what a moderator does

@Shog9 But everyone knows what moderators on Programmers do - spoil everyone else's fun ;)

@ChrisF of course
I got all excited checking the stats this time, 'cause flag weights were at least higher. But that was about it. Still not much close-voting or editing.

user2334
@Shog9 I get the issues you mentioned in your post, but at the same time, I like resolution and closure. You got some people annoyed at the moderators and feel like complaining all the time is the only way to fix it, and we got some people annoyed at the first group because they won't step up. An election is a nice concrete event that says, "okay, let's place all the cards on the table and move onto the next hand"

@MarkTrapp So yeah... I went looking back at the last progse election, and... One pro-tem ran? And then didn't get elected? Let's face it: we got lucky
I am not at all confident that another ChrisF or Anna Lear are waiting in the wings.

I'd like to think that, given a new slate of nominees, people would take one look at it and re-elect the same people for another term, but I'm not confident in that either. But I like surprises.

Well... Like I said in the post, if anyone ever needs to step down, go right ahead - this isn't supposed to feel like work. We'll deal. But don't do it for the heck of it, and try not to think you're unappreciated - it's a thankless job, but thanks for doing it just the same.

user2334
Don't get me wrong: I like doing it and I'll keep doing it until someone tells me to stop. There are certain things I won't do because it doesn't jive with my understanding of the responsibilities inherent in the job (like letting Prog.SE become a free-for-all), but I'm all for accommodating other, reasonable requests (which I think elections are arguably one of)
