@jtbandes after backup begins you can use Finder (without Time Machine browser) to browse Backups.backupdband check that previous data is being reused.

@jtbandes look at it from a different angle; look to see whether alongside previous data, there's a separate .inProgress for today's backup

The .inProgress folder is in the same directory as the other backups. I'm just not sure if it's making use of files which might be the same

@jtbandes if 105.46 GB is more than you expect, it's probably because: for this one backup the estimate is a simple (quick) sum of the content of all folders to be backed up, without attention to whether files differ.

Q: Can I get the original Mac font Chicago on a Mountain Lion Mac?

I'm running Mountain Lion on a mid 2011 MacBook Air. I'd love to be able to set type in the oldest Macintosh font, Chicago. Is this font included anywhere in OS X Mountain Lion? If not, what is the most recent Macintosh operating system to include the font, and can the font be purchased anywhere?

I also vaguely recall that either Chicago or Charcoal (I don't remember which) exists for the Latin character renderings of some other character fonts back a few OS versions ago.

But I'm hoping some font <del>geek</del> expert can point me in the right direction.

@DanielLawson Pretty much, except usually not in Photoshop. Special instances, like my case, require something like Photoshop. Studios may have another way of putting in a lightsaber programmatically, but it would require a lot of extra equipment.

The basic idea is that you go frame by frame in the video and move the lightsaber.

A lightsaber is a fictional weapon in the Star Wars universe, a "laser sword." It consists of a polished metal hilt which projects a blade of Plasma about 1.33 meters (1.45 yards) long. The lightsaber is the signature weapon of the Jedi order and their Sith counterparts, both of whom can use them for close combat, or to deflect blaster bolts. Its distinct appearance was created using rotoscoping for the original Star Wars films, and digitally for the prequel trilogy. The lightsaber first appeared in the original Star Wars film (1977) and every Star Wars movie to date (except The Star Wars...

The original crew actually made the lightsaber...

So maybe they don't do that now...

@jtbandes How did your backup proceed/complete? Was the 105.46 GB simply an overestimate?

@GrahamPerrin It seems to have worked alright; when I enter the Time Machine UI, I can go back through my old backups. I did have a lot of photos added since the last backup, so that's probably where a large part of the size came from (that and having installed Mountain Lion)

Ah OK. Good to know that it behaves normally. (There are bugs and gaps in Time Machine in 12A269, but hopefully no showstoppers.)

@balpha on the subject of issues affecting multiple stacks: chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/1037347#1037347 – affects Ask Different and some other (not all) stacks. On one hand, it's an apparently minor issue – maybe nothing more than formatting. On the other hand, it does affect FAQ, which is high visibility content.

I still am not sure that it would work. Take a look at the lightsaber image:

You see how there is a white center with glowing green edges? I fail to see how that could be accomplished with a green screen. If you have any ideas, please! I'm all ears!!

I would love an easier way to do this!

@daviesgeek If you can get a version of the lightsaber image with the right opacity data you can make keyframes along the path you want it to travel and have it follow them. Since it's going behind him you'll have to use some form of selection to mask off that area of the image. After Effects has some good tools to automate this.

@NathanGreenstein Yeah, that's how I'm doing it, 'cept I'm using Photoshop for masking....probably not the best way, but it's the most precise way I know of.

@daviesgeek Right, and After Effects (and probably Final Cut) have tools to help you do the selection. So you can give it some help (maybe do one selection by hand per keyframe, e.g.) and it will do things automatically from there.

Just really reduces the number of frames you have to do by hand

@stuffe It took me embarrassingly long to figure out how to get back and forth between Metro and the normal UI :D

But I actually rather like the Metro apps.

Nice use of gigantic background images in, e.g. the Weather app.
