@DanHulme In related news -
Facebook are looking to curb all the clickbait articles that people share
. Which is a good thing in my book.
Dan Hulme
they should have called it "one weird trick for curbing clickbait articles"
JonW
"You'll never guess what Facebook are going to do with clickbait articles?!?"
Which is basically how this news is being 'hilariously' tweeted.
Dan Hulme
why do lists work so well as clickbait?
why should "7 tricks for losing weight" entice people in more than "lose weight with our battery of tips" or similar
JonW
Good question.
Appeals to the curiosity rather than the desire for knowledge, I guess.
Probably something in there with secrecy too - feeling like you're getting to hear something secret is probably a bit of a driver.
Dan Hulme
oh yeah, the secrecy and gossipy aspects make sense
"you'll never believe" and the like are believable
I just don't understand why lists
JonW

Lists are good for short attention spans.
Dan Hulme
it works with magazine covers/headlines too, so it's not just a web/sharing thing
the problem is, you can't search for articles about clickbait, because they all have clickbaity headlines
JonW
Like trying to search for things about the hamburger menu
Dan Hulme
I've found a lot of articles explaining what clickbait is, and a few opinion pieces, but not much about the why
this one has
something
to say, even if it's not much
theguardian.com/books/2013/nov/12/…
(I had already worked out "they are easy to write")

So the answer is really "because lazy".
Dan Hulme
I don't think that's enough, really. The list format is widespread, even among publications that really won't indulge writer laziness at the cost of views. It couldn't be such a popular format if it didn't have some effect on the reader too
JonW
"because lazy" works for both author
and
reader though.

If we're blogspamming in here, then here's the latest article I wrote:

oh wow, I just noticed a great feature in Evernote's web interface
when you scroll through the list of notes, it has a caption "1-14 of 28 notes"
