@JonW I prefer the fade out to a harsh cut-off, but loathe when it's overused. I've seen websites that have "read more" links when opening a DIRECT LINK to the article

Oof, that's a bit daft. I see them used on responsive sites where the designer clearly doesn't want the layout compromised because of the content, but that's no different to ellipsising it really.
